Cactus (Part 2/5)

Hours later...

Succulentus had reached the end. But it wasn't what he expected. It was actually more than he thought it would be.
Green, soft spikes sprouted from the ground and covered a damp, brown layer of sand.
"This wasn't how I imagined it at all. This.. this is beautiful! It's so peaceful. Oh! Animals! Some look just like my desert friends!"
Succulentus was astonished. He walked along the damp sand for several more minutes, until...
A patch of green spike spoke to him, "Hey, um.. This is getting a little cramped- Ouch! You're some sharp tree. What are you?"
"Trees? What are trees? I'm a cactus. What are you?" Succulentus replied.
"Well, I'm grass. My name is Fern. And that's a tree," the patch of grass pointed, well, gestured, to a giant, brown thing with grass-like things on it, "Wait, how are you walking?!"
"Oh! Hi, gra- I mean Fern. I'm Succulentus. Um... I don't really know how to explain.. walking.. Is that grass, too?" Succulentus faced the tree, "Oh my gosh, will you grow into that one day?"
"No silly, the brown stuff is made of solid material called wood, and the stuff on top are leaves. They come in many different shapes! You should check out some of them."
"Wow, really? We come in different shapes, too! There's round, tall cacti with no arms, which is me, then there's tall, round cacti with arms, like that tree, but only two arms, and they're green and wider and rounder, and the arms aren't as pointy. Then, there's cacti like me, but flatter and rounder, and some have very fluffy spikes, plus they hate water. They only drink it to survive. Oh, and did I mention? Some of us have flowers!"
"Awww, you guys are lucky. We come in mostly one size. We do grow, though. There's also many types of trees. And you have flowers? We have flowers, too, except they grow on the ground."
"... Hey, Fern, can I stay here with you?"
"Sure! We'd love to have a new friend! Here, I'll introduce you to some of mine!" Fern looked at some trees, "That's Timber, that's Oak...."
Succulentus suddenly had a feeling of dread. He missed Prickly and his critter friends. These ones weren't the same as the ones he knew... But he vowed to explore the world, so he had to move on.
All of a sudden, Succulentus heard a loud, crackling noise. He had nowhere to hide, so he bent down.
"Aw, don't worry, Succul... Succule- Don't worry, that's just thunder! It happens all the time here. Guess it doesn't rain a lot where you live, huh?" reassured Fern.
Succulentus still was too scared to answer. He rocked back and forth, "It's happening....!"
"Wh-what?" Fern looked a little shocked.
Drops of water poured down upon Succulentus. Then he remembered. It was just rain. So much water... It never rains this much in the desert... He sighed out of relief and started using his dry roots to soak up the droplets of rain in the ground.
