Loss Short Story
Pain. That's all I feel when I come into consciousness. How long have I been sleeping for? I don't remember the last time I was awake. I don't even remember what happened before I feel asleep.
Each part of my body is screaming and I try to move but, as predicted, I only hurt more. I struggle to open my eyes against the bright lights and I squint to try to adjust to the harsh rays.
Eventually, my eyesight becomes clear. Before doing anything, I look where the pain is coming from. Well, most of the pain. I realise I'm lying in a hospital bed, that has the barriers up as if I'm being kept in.
I move my arms to push them away when I see the wires that trail from my arm to a machine and a sack of liquid. As well, a mask covers my mouth and nose, pumping an unknown gas into me.
I stretch but a pain shoots up my leg and I cry in pain. A heavy weight weighs on both of my legs. Two white casts hold my legs into place with signatures up and down them in bright colours. I glare at the casts, hoping they would break under my stare.
The room is small, with one bed. It mainly filled with machines that I don't recognise and occasionally light up. And in the corners are flowers and balloons with 'Get Well Soon'.
The door opening changes my attention as a man strolls in. He wears a tie and a stripe top with a clip board in his hand. I hunch away from him as best as I can with casts holding me down.
He notices this and stops. "It's ok. I'm not going to hurt you." He reassures me but I don't take my eyes off him. "Calm. You can't be getting more injured." He points towards my legs. Very slowly, I lower back down but keep my guard up.
His eyes look warily at me, like he's studying me as his latest science experiment. "I need to ask you a couple of questions. Answer them truthfully and then we'll be able to help."
He pulls up a chair next to me and I watch him as he takes out a pen and pad of paper. He does each of these movements slowly as if I would be spooked at quick actions. "What's your name?" He first says and I'm almost too scared to answer.
"H-Hailey Pent." He writes something down making me uncomfortable. What if I say the wrong answer? Do I get less food?
"Where are you?"
"A Hospital.....I think." I look around, my eyes wide. The man looks at me as if he wants me to explain. "I might be kidnapped." He nods slowly, writing this down. I grip the side of the mattress, getting more agitated.
"Can you name everyone in your family?" He says but I don't reply. "Hailey?"
"I have a family?" I say and the man takes a deep breath in. "That was a wrong answer wasn't it?" I feel the walls begin to close in as he writes more things in his note pad.
"Can you name friends at your school?" Again, I hit a mental block. The doctor looks more concerned now.
"Hailey, I'm going to tell you what's happened. This is going to be a lot to take in." He warns me, which scares me even more. "You were involved in a car crash with your parents."
"W-What?" The machine next to me starts to erupt with beeps as my heart goes skyrocket.
"It looks like you've lost your memory in the crash. And broke both your shins." He points towards my wrapped up legs. "Hailey, in the crash, you were in the back while your parents were in the front."
"The car hit a tree. I'm sorry for me to have to say this but, both your parents died in the crash." He explains. "They shielded you so that the impact wasn't as much. And it worked, you got off lightly Hailey."
"But my memory of people are gone?" I look at my legs and try to think but I can't remember a thing. The doctor watches me as I process the information. "I can't remember anyone."
"What do you feel Hailey?" He asks.
"Alone." The doctor hurriedly writes things down, the beeping monitor not getting any slower.
"Alright. I'll be back." He gets up and walks out the room, giving me concerned looks.
I sit in the silence, thinking over the questions. Apparently I have a family. And Friends. Am I supposed to know these things? But, my parents are dead. They saved me.
The door opens and the doctor comes in again. But this time, a boy comes in behind him. He walks up to me slowly, his eyes locked onto mine. He looks kind of nervous to talk to me.
He has large bags under his brown eyes, like he hasn't slept in weeks. Even his movements are slow. He has chocolate hair that he runs a shaky hand through. It matches the colour of my hair.
"Hailey. This is Blaine." The boy looks older then me by a couple of years. "He's your brother. He's the only sibling you have."
"And I've forgotten you. I'm all the family you've got left."
"I'm just glad you're unharmed." He looks towards my legs. "To some extent." He tries to make me smile. The doctor watches me yet I am too shocked to reply. To even make a sound.
