"I FOUND YOU!"
The voice of a teenage girl screamed from probably less than 20 metres away, he flinched as a bright light shone over him.
What was this crap he had to deal with now?
It was just taking a peaceful walk in the woods after Masky lost his shit at him, he hadn't been bothering anyone but what Ticci Toby had failed to realise was that he had wondered a bit too close to civilisation.
The girl came running over to him, a big grin on her face, then it was suddenly gone as her flashlight scanned him up & down.
"Hey, you're not Derek..."
She mumbled, more to herself than to anyone else that was out here.
"I'm so sorry! See, I thought you were my friend, Derek, but you're not... Hey, have you seen anyone else creeping around in the dark? I'm playing hide & seek with my friends."
She informed him, waving her flashlight around, looking for anyone else. Hide & seek, huh? Weren't they a little old for that?
Toby shrugged & shook his head, not wanting to get caught up into anything but then he titled his head, why not play? He was bored, didn't have much to do...
"I-I can help you find them..."
He spoke, the girl whipped around, her flashlight burning his eyes. She flicked it off with a smile.
"Cool, okay, what's your name? I'm Trisha, nice to meet you!"
Trisha held out her hand in greeting, flicking the flashlight on but keeping its light aimed at the ground. Trisha stood two inches less than Toby, but her shining green eyes & dark blonde hair said otherwise.
"Toby."
He shook her hand.
"C'mon, this way, I think I heard them walking back to the camp."
Trisha whispered as she spun on her heel & began to creep around, like Jeff would when he was on the hunt, if he had ants in his pants.
Toby did his best to not laugh loudly as he watched Trisha make their way back to the campsite.
At first he was hesitant, he would get into even more trouble if he left the safety of the woods but the urge to play with the other kids was too strong, he leapt forward & joined Trisha as they scanned the back of someone's cabin.
"Not here."
Trisha breathed as she flicked the flashlight off, the trekked around the cabins some more until they heard footsteps quickly rushing over some gravel.
"Bet you that's Betty or Fern."
Trisha whispered with a grin to Toby, they raced past a cabin, their footsteps silent on the grass as the crouched behind a car.
A second or two later, Trisha jumped up & yelled at someone, her flashlight illuminating this side of the cabin.
"FOUND YOU BETTY!"
A plump girl with curly blonde hair rounded the corner with a smile on her cheeks.
"Aw, you caught me!"
She whined but only continued to smile, she didn't take offence to Toby or though any suspicion of him other than: "Who's that?"
Toby & the girls walked down a gravel street, their flashlights searching for anyone who was hiding behind a bush, car, cabin, or just plain darkness.
"Since we're up at this side of the park, Danny, Fern & Colla will be down there, watching us."
Betty pointed with her index finger toward a couple of parked caravans. Trisha nodded & smiled back at Toby.
"Should we split up, then?"
She offered.
"No, Derek's probably hiding around the amenities, again. He doesn't like the dark..."
Betty informed Toby, they made way toward a large block that was lit up with more lights than a neighbourhood street.
"Right, I'll go around the corner to see if he's on the other side, Betty you can go in that way & Toby, stand guard, see if anyone else is around."
Trisha instructed, the teens did as they were told.
Not even 10 minutes later, Betty came back with no result as Trisha rounded the corner with Derek.
A grin on her face as she explained what happened.
Toby looked at Derek, they seemed the same height & had the same colour hair, but that's where their similarities stopped.
"Sa, now tere's fo' o' us, who might kno' where te res o' 'em are?"
Derek shrugged, Toby had no idea but Betty & Trisha shared a look.
"Well, Danny, Fern & Colla usually travel in a pack, they're really quiet & very sneaky- always at the opposite end of the park..."
A distant look in Trisha's eyes as they listed off their statistics.
"Right now, we're in tha middle o' tha campsite, 'f we split up into two's, we're could flank 'em."
Derek suggested, & so Betty & Derek flanked the right side of the park whilst Trisha & Toby searched up the left. If anyone saw anyone taking shortcuts through the playgrounds & backyards, they were to pursue immediately.
Soon enough, Danny, Fern & Callo were caught in the playground trying to cut through by Trisha & Derek. Toby had swerved in the street, hoping to stop them from going anywhere else while Betty caught up to the action.
"Who the Hell is this?"
Fern asked, his voice blunt as he pointed at Toby, the trio stood there panting to catch their breath.
"This is Toby, & he's playing with us."
Trisha informed them, Danny handed over his spare flashlight so Toby was "Officially apart of the Flashlight Gang" now...
"Aight, so it's 'u guys' turn to hide now, rack off brats!"
Fern jerked his thumb, as he Callo & Danny sat over by the slide to count to 30 seconds each.
Betty, Derek, Trisha & Toby laughed as they raced off to find hiding spots. Toby was finding it fun to play with these kids, neither one of them had said anything nasty to him or thrown odd looks his way. Instead they had asked him for ideas & offered good spots & tips on how to win against the others.
Callo was very paranoid, so she pretty much walked everywhere with her flashlight turned on. Danny never stopped talking, & he was a heavy walker. Fern wasn't agile as he seemed, so it was good to stick to long & open streets to get away from him.
Betty, although a bit large, was extremely good at hiding in the smallest spots. Derek usually hid around well lit up buildings but he knew a lot of short cuts. Trisha was the bravest, she pretty much hid in the darkest corners of the campsite.
In half an hour or more so, Betty & Derek had already been found. Trisha & Toby had gotten separated from the chaos but they had soon met up again in the garden of a cabin.
Now they stood, cold sweat down their backs that were against the wall of a cabin, waiting for the horrific flashlights & loud voices to just fade away.
"Th-they're go-gonna... Find us!"
Toby stuttered in fear, Trisha quickly hushed him.
After what seemed like forever, the pair were finally caught hiding together behind a jeep just outside the camping grounds.
"So you'll be back to play again tomorrow night?"
Trisha asked, a hopeful smile on her face. Toby nodded, smiling behind his mask.
The group of kids split up to go their seperate ways.
Betty heading toward her cabin by the pool area. Danny heading up the small trail that led to his father's cabin. Derek & Colla heading back to their cabin. Fern marching off to his.
Trisha gave Toby a hug before skipping off to her cabin.
As Toby trekked back through the woods to go home, he realised something, that-
1.) its past 12 am
And 2.) most of those kids were like him, they all had some sort of mental illness affecting their lives, this was a camp for his people.
A place where they could play safely every night.
