Chapter 4
Thank you so much!!!! You guys are awesome!
"Wow!" was all Magnus could say when he walked in the bakery shop. The place was breath taking. Vintage and elegant, to be particular. Cedar walls, covered in funny, colourful paintings and and egnimatical runes which, Magnus supposed, had to do something with the shop's name: "The Mortal Instruments".
Long tables were pressed to the walls, surrounded by rustic wooden chairs. The round and the square ones were put right in the middle of the shop.
His eyes immediately flicked to Jace, standing behind the glass counter, which displayed all kinds of cakes, tarts, cupcakes, mousse....with various colours that could make anyone drool.
This is definitely my second most favourite place after the Lightwoods' bungalow. Magnus thought, enjoying the warm and cozy atmosphere wrapping around him like a blanket.
"Thanks!" Alec's face broke into a half coy half proud smile.
By Lilith did I just say that out loud?
"Yeah you did."
"Dammit!" Magnus mentally noted to himself to keep his thoughts quiet the next time.
"Hey lovebirds!" Jace yelled "Stop ogling each other and help me clean the table. It's almost nine."
Alec blushed, stumbling around to do what Jace said. While Magnus strolled to Jace's side, who was busy decorating some sort of chocolate cupcakes, a cup of steamy coffee next to him.
"Are you guys always opening this late?" Magnus stated, used the glass to support himself.
"No leaning against the glass!" Jace snapped, without even looking up from his work. "And no, we aren't. Today is Sunday, people tended to sleep in more."
"What are these?" Magnus continued to ask, gestured to the cupcakes "Are they yours?"
"No. I had my espresso chocolate muffins early this morning." Jace rolled his eyes "Not like someone."
Before Magnus could fire a comeback, the doorbell rang as footsteps echoed in the shop. A lanky boy walked in. His brown hair was messy like a bird nest, a pair of glasses sat on the bridge of his nose. He was wearing a red flannel outside a Star Wars T-shirt, his worn out jeans really fit his old Vans. His outfits pratically screamed out "I'm a nerd" to everyone. Followed him was Maryse.
'Hey guys!" the boy exclaimed enthuastically, a bit over optimist for Magnus's liking. Magnus guessed he was a friend of the family. Or a regular.
"Hey Simon! Hey mom!" Alec smiled at them.
The boy-no, Simon made his way towards Jace.
"I'll have-"Jace shoved the coffee and the cupcakes into Simon's chest. "Chocolate cupcakes with mocha butter cream and espresso. Yeah we got it!" The boy was taken by surprise.
"What?" Jace run a hand through his golden hair, raised his eyebrows at the nerdy boy. Simon beamed at him.
"You made these?"
Jace scoffed 'Uhm...no? Alec did. I don't want to waste my time on you. Besides your taste in puddings is bad, mundane."
"Jace!" Maryse scolded her son. Magnus and Alec exchanged looks and smiled allusively at each other.
If a pang of hurt did flash through Simon's face at those words, he quickly shielded it away.
"Mundane?" he laughed humourlessly "At least I'm not some dyed-blond goth weirdo."
"For the record, my hair's natually blond!" Jace folded his arms. Magnus swallowed back down a laugh while Alec slowly turning red from holding back his. Maryse sighed, turned around to face them.
"Hey Alec, why don't you show Magnus around town? Consider it a day off!" she patted her son's cheek.
"But the bakery-"
"Won't blow up without you." Maryse finished "And don't worry, Robert's in charge, not Jace."
Alec still seemed like he was having a conflict with his mind. But his mother had already pushed them out of the door, saying "Shoo, leave Jace and Simon some time alone. They are completely oblivious, those idiots!"
***
The wind started picking up as they set their feet out of the shop. Magnus looked up the sky. It was dark, overcast today.
"Look like it's going to rain." Alec frowned.
"We'd better start going." Magnus nodded absentmindedly. He was too busy focus on how Alec's dark locks blew in the wind. It reminded him of Will. That handsome, arrogant and sneaky bastard. If it hadn't been for Jem, he would have kicked Will where the sun didn't shine. Countless. Of. Times.
"Magnus, Magnus!" Alec waved his hand in front of the taller's face. "What?"
"I asked you, where do you want to go first?"
"You're suppose to be the one show me around town." Magnus pointed out. Alec blushed, scratched the back of his head awkwardly "Yeah right...."
Magnus smiled fondly at the boy, stroking his cheek "How about your favourite place to visit?"
Alec froze at the interaction. His face instanly flamed up. Realizing what he was doing, Magnus's hand jerked back to its place.
Their walk was completely silent. The tension was almost unbearable for Magnus. Little did he know, Alec felt the same way. They arrived at the the destination minutes later. A small library greeted him.
"Here is it!" Alec said when they walked in. There was no one in sight, except the librarian. The room was dead silent. Magnus's eyes flicked from one shelf to another, rows and rows of books were organised neatly and perfectly. Before Magnus could say anything, Alec had cut him off.
"Yeah I know. I'm a nerd, a bookworm, et cetera et cetera. This is-"
"Amazing!" Magnus grinned "I love reading. Nothing can beat a rainy day, sitting inside with a cup of tea and a good book."
Alec exclaimed excitedly "I know right!" Suddenly the librarian looked up from her book, glaring at them through her glasses and shushed Alec. The boy flushed, mumbled out a "Sorry". He then giggled, pulled Magnus to a table and rushed to one of the shelves, took out a book and scurried back to the older.
Magnus cooed at the sight. Alec looked like a boy knowing Christmas was coming early. His eyes were sparkling with excitement as he held out the book for Magnus to see.
"A Tale of Two Cities?" Magnus read the title out loud. Alec nodded vigorously.
"This is really good. It is a historical novel by Charles Dickens, set in London and Paris before and during the French Revolution. The novel tells the story of the French Doctor Manette, his 18-year-long imprisonment in the Bastille-" Magnus interrupted the blue-eyed's babble.
"I know what it is about, love. My friends talked non stop about it all the time." Magnus cringed as Will and Tessa's rants echoed by his ears.
Alec's face fell. Magnus quickly said "But I've never read it so I will borrow it, alright."
Alec brighten up immediately, making Magnus's heart fluttered a bit. Just a tiny bit. No big deal.
The rain was pouring outside when they walked out. Magnus looked at the boy next to him, expecting him to have a way to got home dry. Then without any warning, Alec ran out into the pouring rain.
"ARE YOU CRAZY?" Magnus yelled at the now soaking wet boy. Alec just laughed. "It's been forever since I last had a shower in the rain."
He motioned Magnus to copy him. But the older just shook his head.
"There's no way I'm getting myself wet! Nuh uh! No! Nada!"
Alec pulled out his puppy eyes out. Magnus was not going to give in that easily.
"Come on!" Magnus basically dragged Alec away "Let's get home before you get a cold."
