Fuck. Did I just smell lemon tart?
My eyes sprung open as I tried to adjust my sore eyes to the surrounding as my mind began to register what had happened before I was knocked out.
Oh yeah, that's right. I was in my room, grabbing a sweatshirt and then BAM! someone appeared like a ghost behind me and knocked me out with, what I was pretty sure was, a sedative shot in my neck.
I groaned out loud before mumbling a colourful curse at whoever did that to me.
My senses quickly snapped me out of my rambling mind and my nostrils were aware of that citrusy, sweet smell once again.
I was surprised to find myself, not in a rotten cell, but a very spacious and exotic... cave?
The whole place was dark but had about thirty candles in the room that illuminated the space with a warm saffron glow. Dried herbs and orchids hung above on the stone ceiling. Bowls of water with lemons, star anise, cinnamon sticks and rose petals lay around the cavern.
I looked down to see that I was lying in a makeshift bed on the floor. The pillow was made of what appeared to look like was dried colour dyed straw which was surprisingly comfortable and not that itchy. The blanket was made of the softest linen and was also dyed.
The smell and soft orange glow of this place somehow comforted me like a sweet lullaby but it wasn't as good as Lucien's scent and being wrapped in his arms. Speaking of Lucien, I wonder what he was up to now? Did they notice my disappearance?
My mind quickly shifted into gear and I decided it was time to get up and move quickly before I got caught by my captors. I threw the linen blanket off of me and just managed to get up when a figure appeared at the archway of the cave.
"I see that you have awoken," A soft female voice that was slightly accented, said as I held my breath and froze.
I was tempted to snap at her and say "No, I'm still sleeping that's why I could get out the bed" but I decided to keep my sarcastic comment to myself.
I continued to keep quiet and kept my mouth shut. She must have understood that I wasn't going to be so cooperative and waved off the question.
"Well, since you are awake, why don't we have a cup of lemongrass tea and have a little talk? Come, follow me."
I curiously decided to follow her through the archway into another cavern which was similar to the one I was in except this one had a small fireplace and a rustic table and chairs.
The woman went straight over to the fireplace and hung a black cast iron kettle on a hook over the blazing fire.
As she did so, I finally had time to take in her appearance from behind.
She wore a long and simple black dress that swept the floor, around her small waist was a thin gold chain that was fastened by a filigreed brooch. Her long chocolate hair was let down in light bouncy waves and and she wore a headdress that had tiny gemstones and gold and silver discs hung onto it that made a small rattling noise whenever she moved her head. She reminded me of those fortune tellers that you usually saw at a local small town carnival.
I wasn't really sure what to make of this woman, was she really the one who sedated me? She hardly seemed the type to but I didn't want to judge too fast. Instead I was going to let her explain everything.
"Would you like some honey in your tea?" Her voice brought me back to reality as I cleared my throat which I just realised was extremely dry and hoarse.
"No thank you," I said slowly and watched her as she poured the steaming hot tea into two clay mugs.
She brought the mugs over to the table, the sound of her jingling headdress rang through the silence, and settled herself onto the chair.
"Come and have your tea," She said and gestured with her hand for me to come and take a seat. I did so carefully as I slid onto one of the chairs and studied her face.
Her looked to be in her early thirties, but her hazel eyes hinted that she was a lot older than her body let on. Black kohl lined her eyes making them stand out even more and her face had a strict but kind appearance, like that of a mother's.
She casually took a small sip of her tea before saying, "You are probably wondering where you are."
"Yes," I said quietly, thinking that she might be helpful after all.
"I cannot tell you where you are because this location is to be kept private for reasons that don't exactly concern you," she said but continued, "though I can probably answer some other questions which you seek the answer to."
"Fair enough," I said and took a sip of the hot tea, the strong citrus aroma awakening my senses.
"Why am I here?" I simply asked as I held the warm mug between my hands.
"Because it was the right time to bring you here and you also need help." She shrugged.
I frowned.
"That's too vague. Tell me who sedated me and who are you?" I pushed. If this woman was willing to give me some answers then I would try and get out as much information from her as possible.
"One of our guardian members was sent to sedate you to bring you here. As for my name, it's Novasca, but you can call me Nova. Descendant of the the Fourth Guardian Creation of our Father and member of the Gabreva Coven."
"Uhhhh, could you uhhhhh, explain that in English please?" I said feeling like a retarded idiot but I honestly couldn't process what she was talking about.
"I assume you already know that your mother was a Deus Witch and guardian of the Celestial Bond, yes?"
I racked my brain and thought back to the time Dimitri had explained this to me. Rosannna said I was part of the Hecatisha Coven and Dimitri told me my mother was a... Deus Witch who were the guardians of the Celestial Bond and that was the connection between Heaven and Earth.
I nodded my head, signalling that I knew what she was talking about.
"Well, our Father or Vazol as you might also know him by, created the first females over five thousand years ago. They were created to protect the connection between Heaven and Earth. Vazol had created five females who became known as Deus Witches. There was Hecatisha, Lunary, Alprae, Gabreva and Jisamene. Hecatisha was the first female and Deus Witch to be created. And Gabreva was the fourth Deus Witch to be created. So that is what I mean by the Fourth Guardian Creation of our Father. I am a member of the Gabreva Coven."
"I see... She said I'm a member of the Hecatisha Coven," I mumbled.
Nova nodded her head and brought her mug to her lips, taking a sip of the tea.
"You are more powerful than most witches, Isadora." She suddenly announced and I wasn't really surprised that she knew my name or that I was a witch otherwise why would she have brought me here in the first place?
"Because I'm a descendent of one of the first witches to be created?" I asked.
"Yes but it's not just that."
She paused for a moment and looked at me. She scanned my face as if she was looking to see if I didn't know something that she did.
"I can tell that you do not know whom your mother might be. I will tell you that the main reason that you are more powerful than most witches is because your mother is Hecatisha. The first and most powerful of all witches. It is rare to see a witch who is such a close descendant as a daughter of a Deus Witch alive especially with both First Guardian Creation and vampire blood in her veins."
I nearly spat the mouthful of tea I had just chugged down back out again. I couldn't believe it! My mother was Hecatisha? The first female and Deus Witch to be created.
But their was one question that really bugged the hell out of me.
"Nova, Deus Witches are immortal right?"
"Yes they are, unless their heart is ripped out. Even after it has been detached from the body, the heart is still beating and alive. It is the heart that is immortal." She answered.
I winced at the thought that Dimitri ruled out my mother's heart.
"That bastard Dimitri," I muttered angrily as I ground my teeth together.
Nova stiffened and her face twisted in disgust as I said Dimitri's name.
"He is nothing but a selfish and heartless fool. It brought great heartbreak to the Hecatisha Coven when we all discovered Heactisha had her heart ripped out by that monster," she spat, "There was nothing we could do. We testified to the Elder's Council but without any physical proof, we had nothing against him. Hecatisha had mind linked to one of her Coven's members to tell her she was dying but that wasn't proof enough. The Covens have forever despised Dimitri and his followers since."
I stayed quiet and listened to every word she was saying, after all, she was explaining the death of my birth mother. With every minute that passed, I hated Dimitri even more. That son of a bitch was ruthless and didn't care for anybody, not even his own daughter. He only cared about himself. I hated knowing that his blood ran through my veins, that I was sharing the same blood as that monster. I silently promised myself that I would avenge my mother and also do the world a favour.
"He wants to take over Vazol's position," I said after a few minutes of complete silence.
"Yes, I know that. But our Father has plans too, one of them being you." She looked me straight in the eyes.
"Me? But why?" I said completely baffled.
"You're powerful Isadora. Only you're strength can match Dimitri's. Our Father cannot interfere with beings on Earth. It is against his vows. We must deal with the problems ourselves though He has helped a great deal, one of them being that he kept you alive and under his protection all those years otherwise the Elder's Council would have discovered your existence and have killed you by now."
"He kept me safe?" I whispered.
"Yes. But he cannot keep you safe anymore. You have come of age and must fend for yourself. War is coming, Isadora, and you must be there to fight it when it approaches you. This battle will cost you the world and everyone you love. If you fall, the world will fall with you."
All I could hear was the crackle of the fire. All I could see was the saffron glow in the room. All I could feel was the warmth of the mug between my hands. Everything seemed to have disappeared and left me with my thoughts. I didn't want any of this to happen. I was so new to all of this and how was I supposed to take down a vampire who was over two centuries old and save everyone I love? I didn't want to do this alone, I couldn't do this alone. As much as I hated being seen as weak, this was the hardest task that I couldn't do by myself. It was impossible.
As if sensing my thoughts, Nova spoke up.
"You do not have to do this alone."
"Then who could I possibly do this with?" I asked and my voice was so quiet.
Her next answered surprised me.
"Your mother."
"My m-mother? How? You said she was dead!" I pointed out. Did this woman have amnesia or something?
"Yes she is dead but her heart is still alive. First you must find her heart and place it back into her body," she explained.
"Find her body? Where the hell am I supposed to search for her body and heart?" I cried.
I sure as hell wasn't going to go grave robbing or digging up rotten and smelly decayed bodies in twenty different graveyards.
"Her heart would most likely be buried beside her body," She said knowingly and traced the rim of the mug with her index finger.
"And where in God's name is she buried?"
Nova blew the steam rising from her cup and took a sip before answering, "Where it all started of course."
I paused for a minute before looking at her. I knew where she meant and she saw that.
"The Garden of Eden," We said in unison.
