"Isa!" Clayre screeched on the other end of the phone.
I rolled my eyes at her childish excitement. She could never greet people like a normal human being.
"Calm down Clayre or else you'll have to pay for a new hearing aid for me."
She scoffed on the other end of the line and I bet you my sacred bag of Cheetos that she rolled her eyes too. Typical Clayre.
"We need to go to the cinema now because I heard that Matt is going to be there with his friends!" she squealed.
Matt is the school football team's quarterback and is also Clayre's biggest crush and she has great flirting skills that she tries out with him - note the sarcasm. Every time we passed him in the hall, Clayre would try to catch his attention by laughing out loud and whipping her hair around (which I end up choking on) or in one case, threw one of my Cheetos at him! She should know better and that, my Cheetos are protected under pain of death.
"I don't know, Clayre, I'm kind of busy tonight," I partly lied.
"If 'busy' means watching re-runs of American Horror Story and stuffing your face with high calorie food, then I'm not surprised!"
Ah, she knows me too well. This is exactly why we're friends.
"Can't you just ask Hanna to go with you instead?" I asked hopefully.
Please, please, please take Hanna instead!
"Hanna's visiting her grandmother, remember?!" Clayre huffed.
Damn it! I was so close to getting away with not going.
"Isadora Pallas, I will drag your lazy ass with me to the cinema now whether you like it or not!" She cried angrily.
This was it. I lost the battle and I knew better than to argue with her. Last time I didn't do something she wanted, my Chanel No° 5 perfume was used as furniture polish. That costed 5 weeks of my pocket money!
I knew never to make her angry again after that.
I groaned loudly before answering her,"Pick me up in 10 minutes."
"YES!" She shrieked delightedly.
"I'm only doing this to avoid your wrath," I reminded her before I hung up.
I sighed and dragged myself off of my bed which I devoted my love and laziness to. I went straight to my closet and pulled out a camisole, flannel shirt and ripped jeans. I quickly threw them on and walked into my bathroom. I decided not to do too much makeup since I was literally forced to do something I didn't want to. I stuck with some eyeliner, mascara and a light brown matte lipstick. I didn't bother with my hair, I just let it down in its natural state; straight as a ruler, jet black in colour and reached down way past my tail bone. I gave myself a quick look over.
Ding dong.
The doorbell rang. Clayre must be here already. I bounded down the stairs and snatched my black Converse and put them on. I tucked my wallet and phone in my jean pocket before running over to the door.
"Mom, dad! I'm going out with Clayre to the cinema!" I yelled as I opened the door.
"Okay, sweetheart. Just make sure to be home by 8." My mom called back.
"Will do."
"Love you!"
Seriously mom?
"Love you too," I muttered.
Clayre wasn't standing outside so she must've just rung the doorbell and went back into her car.
It was only 5 o' clock in the evening but it was dark already since it was December.
I shivered when the cold air hit my exposed skin. Clayre lured me out here to die of frostbite!
I saw Clayre's Mercedes parked on the pavement and ran over to it. She was in the car texting on her phone and didn't notice me approaching. I pulled on the door handle but she had locked it from the inside.
"Clayre Rosa Phillips! You better open this fucking door before I smash your car with a crowbar!" I yelled, pounding my fists on the window.
She looked up with a surprised expression and unlocked the doors. I opened the door to get inside the warm car and let out a chilled breath.
"Damn it's cold outside," She said.
"I totally didn't know that," I said rolling my eyes.
Clayre started up the engine and drove off down the main road and into town to the cinema.
She didn't say much but I knew she was planning on how to get Matt to notice her. I just sat there quietly in the passenger seat looking out the window at the shops and nightclubs with their neon signs flashing in the cold dark night.
15 minutes had passed when Clayre finally pulled into a parking space and cut off the engine.
"Okay, we're here!" She cried excitedly with a hint of nervousness in her voice.
I looked ahead and saw the cinema with a long line of teens queuing at the ticket booth.
"I'm going to buy the tickets," She said as we both got out of the car.
"And I'll be buying food at the shop," I added and walked over to the little shop department beside the ticket booth.
I strolled over to the shop and found out that it was closed.
Shit. The only solution to tolerate this evening was to occupy myself with junk food but that has gone down the drain now.
I sighed angrily and sauntered back over to Clayre who was in the queue.
"The shop is freaking closed!" I whined.
"There's a convenient store 2 minutes from here. We passed it on our way here so you might want to go there instead. The queue is pretty long so you might make it back on time."
There was some hope left.
I nodded quickly, "I'll be back in a few minutes."
I quickly walked down the street which was somehow eerily quiet except for the people hanging outside the bars and nightclubs.
I tugged at my flannel sleeves, trying to stretch it over my numb hands.
To be honest, I loved the night. It wasn't really scary to me. I found it beautiful when the darkness let the stars shine.
I continued walking down the lonely road until I saw the convenient store just 400 yards away.
Hallelujah, I just got lucky!
My happy thoughts were cut short when I felt a presence. I began to slow my pace down trying to decipher what or who it could be. Of course there would be cars coming and going on the road but there was just something off about this particular presence.
Just then I heard a roar of an engine and a black Volkswagen van pulled up right beside me.
Before I could gather my instincts, a dark figure appeared out of the van's side door. It quickly grabbed me and clamped a hand over my mouth.
I screamed and kicked with all of my might but I was no match for this person. His strong arms stuck onto me like a leech and didn't let me go.
I tried kicking, punching and even biting but the only response I got from him was a low grunt.
He tightened his grip on me, nearly squeezing all the oxygen out of my lungs.
What was this guy made of?
Volcanic rock?
He shoved me into the van and slammed the door. I could see a silhouette of another guy in the driver's seat and as he drove the van at top speed.
Fuck! I'm so not going to die like this! Who the hell does he think he is for interrupting my trip to buy my precious food?
"Let me go, you asswipe!" I spat out.
"Hey! Watch your fucking mouth!" He growled. His voice was deep and full of venom which made me retreat back down a bit.
"Says the one who's cussing himself!" I protested.
"Put a gag on her, Lucas!" The man in the driver's seat ordered.
"There ain't none, Mario!"
I tried to stiffle my laughter at the ridiculous name. Imagine saying, "I was kidnapped when I was 18 and my evil kidnapper was called Mario!" Now, if only Lucas was called Luigi, this would've been one hell of a kidnapping story...
Then Lucas turned towards me and in the faint light I could see him smirk.
"Well, baby doll, I guess there's only one possibility left to shut you up."
He started coming closer to me and I backed up.
"Don't fucking come near me!" I shouted backing up against the side of the the van, trying to get away from my kidnapper.
Just then, I felt his fist make contact with my face. My cheek began throbbing with intense pain and before I could throw an insult at him, I felt light headed and I slipped into unconsciousness.
Being kidnapped sucks!
