Friends Don't Hide Bodies S1 E1

INT. WOODS - MIDNIGHT
In the middle of the woods, in almost complete darkness, the only thing creating light comes from two boys' flashlights at their side. EZRA and HAZELL KLEIN (16), fraternal twins, years old, with gorgeous blonde hair and blue eyes, kick heavy plastic bags into a shallow grave. Blood pigments their white shirts and dark-wash jeans. Ezra hands a shovel to his brother, and watches as he stabs the dirt. Ezra joins in with his shovel.
HAZELL
This is fun.
Hazell grins wide. Ezra leans on his shovel and scoffs.
EZRA
Seriously? We're hiding a body.
HAZELL
You're right. Killing the guy was better... Would you like to rent a movie with me? Blockbuster is just about two miles away from here, and Mom and Dad won't be home for a while.
Ezra huffs. The cool air is freezing his breath.
EZRa
We're in the middle of nowhere, Hazell.
HAZELL
So? You don't remember anything from boy scouts when we were kids?
EZRA
(Pauses briefly)
Shovel before someone finds us.
Hazell chuckles.
HAZELL
Who's going to find us here? You said so. We're in the middle of nowhere.
Hazell's smile grows. Ezra rolls his eyes and throws dirt into the pit.
(Intro Plays)
INT. HIGH SCHOOL HALLWAY - DAY
Ezra's eyes trail to LIZA AZUKIAN (16), a slim, intelligent, pretty girl, as she walks down the hallway, then back to his books. Liza walks by, shoving her long dark, curly hair behind her shoulder, dodging glances as she walks up to Ezra through the hallway, adjusting her backpack on her shoulder. She slams his locker shut when she reaches him to catch his attention.
EZRA
What's up, Liza?
LIZA
You seem Jumpy... Did you hear about Peterson James?
Ezra looks nervous.
EZRA
Puh-Pete? Uh...
INT - CREEPY BASEMENT - The Klein's house - FLASHBACK - DAY
PETERSON JAMES (16), a blue-eyed and freckles-faced pretty- boy jock, sits on a stool, gagged and blindfolded. Ezra stands in the background.
Hazell spins the hammer in his gloved fists, and then BANG! He swings the hammer forward against Peterson's skull.
BANG! BANG! Two more strikes, and the person collapses to the floor with a thud. He stands over him... breathing heavily and labored. The room falls silent except for the hammer clattering to the ground beside him.
INT. HIGH SCHOOL HALLWAY - DAY
Ezra scratches his neck.
EZRA
Peterson, not really. But now that you mention it, I have yet to see him around.
Hazell walks up and slams his fists into Ezra's side.
HAZELL
Sup Liza?
LIZA
Peterson's been missing for hours. Someone who lives nearby told me its him.
Hazell suppresses a grin.
HAZELL
I really do feel sorry for him.
Ezra glares at his twin and breathes deeply, adjusting his books in his arms.
THOMAS CHANG (16), a compact, muscular guy with a friendly grin, sneaks up on Hazell, his arm around VERMA RAMIREZ (16), who sports two large buns on either side of her head and oversized glasses. SEBASTIAN JOHNSON (16), a skilled, hefty jock, playfully claps hands with Ezra.
SEBASTIAN
Did you guys hear the news?
They all look interested except for Ezra, who looks anxious.
SEBASTIAN
They found a body in the woods. They think it may be Peterson's. The coroners are examining the remains as we speak.
Hazell grins. Ezra's eyes widen in panic as the heavy thud of the hammer on Peterson's skull resounds in his ear.
EZRA
Shit!
The group looks at Ezra.
LIZA
Are you okay, Ezra?
Ezra looks at her and sighs.
EZRA
That would scare the hell out of me.
Thomas huffs.
THOMAS
What?
Ezra
The thought of what happened to Peterson... it's unimaginable.
Ezra briefly looks at Hazell. The group starts walking to class.
Verma gets closer to Ezra and wraps her arms around him. He jumps, startled.
VERMA
Take it easy, Ez.
THOMAS
Yeah, and let's be honest, you're too nervous and fidgety to be a cold-blooded killer.
Hazell clears his throat.
HAZELL
Do you think the killer will kill again?
THOMAS
Yeah, why not?
SEBASTIAN
Someone has to do something about this. I hate to say it, Ezra, but your dad has a dozen cold cases on his desk with no leads. We should take matters into our own hands and find the killer ourselves.
Everyone looks at him with various expressions ranging from Ezra's panic and Hazell's grin to a general consideration.
HAZELL
Ladies first.
He gestures to the classroom, and they all enter.
INT. CLASSROOM - DAY
All students take their seats. Hazell sits next to Ezra in the front row. The school bell rings, and MR. PEPPERMAN (40s ), well-dressed with oversized glasses, rises from his seat and pushes his mirrors against his nose.
PEPPERMAN
As you may or may not have heard, the body of a young boy, perhaps Peterson, was found in the woods today. Knowing the trauma and worry that this news may provoke, the counselor is available for anyone who needs it today.
Ezra looks at his twin, his face pale as he chews on his hangnails. Hazell gets comfortable in his seat, a bright smile on his lips as he raises his hands.
PEPPERMAN
Yes, Hazell?
Hazell licks his lips, and his smile becomes a cocky grin.
HAZELL
How do they examine the body?
Mr. Pepperman sighs.
PEPPERMAN
That's a question for Mr. Woods.
(to the class)
Just a heads-up, the bell is about to ring in a few minutes, so remember that Ms. Hale is available only for those who need assistance.
Mr. Pepperman trails off, his voice fading. Hazell glances at Ezra this time. Ezra sinks into his seat. Heartbeats thump. Thump-thump. Thump-thump. Ezra seems on the verge of a panic attack. The upper bell rings, and students pile out of the classroom.
Ezra rushes down the hallway.
INT. MS. HALE'S OFFICE - DAY
MS. HALE (the mid-30s), red hair pulled up in a bun and a youthful face, sits in a swivel chair behind a desk, watching Ezra as he huffs deep breaths.
MS. HALE
Are you okay, Mr. Klein?
Ezra breathes deeply. In 1,2, Out, Then...
EZRA
Do you think he suffered?
Ms. Hale adjusts her glasses at her nose and speaks kindly.
MS. HALE
I don't know, Mr. Klein, but I imagine he's at peace now. Do you believe in God, Mr. Klein?
Ezra stutters, unable to get out a single word. A book falls off the desk, and a hammer smashing Peterson's skull fills his troubled mind. He nearly jumps from his seat.
EZRA
(Panicked)
No... I mean, I don't know. Why?
MS. HALE
People tend to grasp onto the fact that no matter how bad life was or how it ended, there's something good afterward... Do you ever feel remorseful for someone who has suffered a tragedy?
EZRA
Uh, yeah. Sometimes I feel responsible as if I could have prevented it.
Ms. Hale looks at him inquisitively, and Ezra's heart flutters like it would plunge out of his chest.
MS. HALE
You should rethink your guilt process, Mr. Klein.
Ms. Hale pulls her mug to her lips, sucks on her coffee, and places the cup back on a coaster.
MS. HALE
Feeling grief is one thing, but feeling responsible for something that wasn't your fault is unhealthy. Now, take the day a little slower. You and your brother knew Peterson personally, so I could have your parents pull you out of class today if needed.
Ezra taps his fingers on the armrest. A bittersweet taste hits his tongue as he bites down.
EZRA
Thanks, but that would be unnecessary.
MS. HALE
All right, Mr. Klein, but I'll always be in the same place if you ever need me again.
She nods, gesturing to the doorway. Ezra grabs his backpack, glancing at the book lying on the floor. Ironic. It's "The Lovely Bones" by Alice Sebold, a classic tale of murderous misfortune. Ezra nods back to Ms. Hale, watching her sip her cup of coffee with her deep red lips... and walks out.
INT. DINING ROOM - HOME - DAY
Forks CLANK against glass plates. Hazell digs into a steaming pile of spaghetti topped with meatballs.
HAZELL
So, Mom, dad, how was work today?
MR. KLEIN (40s), with dark blonde hair and deep brown eyes, looks at Mrs. Klein, spaghetti noodles hanging from her mouth. She sucks the rest down and sips wine.
MRS. KLEIN
It was good. There weren't many deliveries today, but we had twin boys like you.
MRS. KLEIN (in the early 40s) With gorgeous blue eyes, reaches across the table to rub her hands through Hazell's blonde hair while he forks down some spaghetti. Ezra twists noodles on his fork but refuses to eat.
Mr. Klein swallows a mouth full of spaghetti, clears his throat, wipes his mouth with a cloth napkin, and sips water. Then he speaks.
MR. KLEIN
The station was mostly quiet. Karen was, well... Karen, but other than that. We did well.
HAZELL
Really? I heard a body was found in the woods today.
Mr. Klein clears his throat, almost choking on spaghetti. Then he sips water again.
MR. KLEIN
Who told you that?
Ezra groans in the background, still playing with his food.
HAZELL
Our school wouldn't stop talking about it. They say it's Peterson's body. Why? Were you on that case?
MR. KLEIN
Hell, yeah. I was working on that case!
Hazell grins, looking at his brother for a second while taking a bite of spaghetti and meatballs.
HAZELL
Let's hope it doesn't become another cold case, one more unsolved murder on your--
Mrs. Klein clears her throat.
MrS. KLEIN
--Hazell!
HAZELL
What? I'm not wrong. Four student murders and still nothing.
Mr. Klein gulps his spaghetti. He speaks with a casual but firm eye, curious about his son's insight.
MR. KLEIN
Where'd you hear that, bud?
HAZELL
From you, Dad. You told us while you were drunk the other day. You haven't found any fingerprints or anything leading you closer to solving the cases. Am I wrong?
Mr. Klein wipes his mouth with a cloth napkin with a dazed look.
MR. KLEIN
No, you're right. We're trying to keep the cases private, so you please don't share any of this with anyone, especially you're friends.
Ezra's chair screeches as he gets up and grabs his plate.
EZRA
I'm going to my room.
He walks into his kitchen, rinses the plate in the sink, then walks off. The rest of his family watches him go.
Mrs. KLEIN
(to Mr. Klein)
Honey, I think you should cut down on the alcohol...
INT. BEDROOM - NOON
A bedroom door slams. To the front, a desk is covered in paperwork about crime studies and some comic books in plastic sleeves. A pile of clothes sits in the corner of the closet next to the desk. Ezra slams his back against his mattress and pulls a pillow to his face, screaming into the cotton and fabric. Another bed sits in the background.
The door creeps open. Hazell stands in the doorway, a huge smirk plastered on his face.
HAZELL
Dad told me Principal Gaye wants to close the school for a week in two days.
Ezra scoffs aggressively, irritated by his brothers' selfless demeanor.
EZRA
Do... Do you even understand what you did?
Hazell lays back on his bed in the corner. He looks at the ceiling with a relaxed face.
HAZELL
I killed Peterson.
EZRA
Yes, Hazell. What will happen when Dad or the rest of the school finds out about that or any of our secrets? You ended a life... Do you even feel anything?
Hazell scoffs.
HAZELL
No. Am I supposed to feel something?
Ezra stands up, walks towards the desk, grabs a comic book, and returns to his bed, plopping down.
HAZELL
Relax. We're joining the guys in a little while... We have a murderer to catch, remember?
Ezra crumples the page and looks at his smiling twin brother with fear and disgust.
EXT. WOODS - NIGHT
Thomas, Sebastian, and Verma wander through the woods along a small stream in the middle of the woods. Their flashlights cast a mantle of light that looks out of place amidst the fog and potential danger.
VERMA
Great, Sebastian. We're lost. Thanks a bunch.
Verma rolls her eyes and sweeps her flashlight through the woods.
THOMAS
I say we go that way.
Thomas points off randomly towards the left side of the woods.
SEBASTIAN
Fuck you, Thomas. There isn't anything here except more woods. Maybe we should follow a river. It might lead us somewhere, such as a highway.
THOMAS
It was your piece-of-shit idea in the first place.
Sebastian flips the bird at Thomas in the dark. Something rustles in the bushes nearby. They all freeze.
THOMAS AND VERMA
What the fuck was that?
Sebastian chuckles.
SEBASTIAN
Probably a coyote or a wolf, or maybe a serial killer...
Sebastian laughs hysterically. Verma shoves him.
SEBASTIAN
I'm kidding. What would a serial killer be doing near where they found Petersons' body?
VERMA
You know what they say: "The killer always returns to the crime scene." By the way, where's Liza?
Leaves crunch softly in the near distance.
SEBASTIAN
We lost her a few miles back.
I'm sure she'll catch up.
THOMAS
Not if she's murdered first.
The three jump as a flashlight turns toward them. Ezra stands there staring at his three friends like a deer in the headlights.
THOMAS
Geez, Ezra! You just about gave us heart attacks.
EZRA
Sorry.
Sebastian laughs.
VERMA
Yeah, we were expecting a serial killer.
Ezra stiffens as anxiety fills his troubled soul.
EZRA
Nope, just me... and Hazell. He should be a little behind me.
SEBASTIAN
I told you, Verma. What is the serial killer going to do in the middle of nowhere with a--
Sebastian notices the hand shovel in Ezra's hand.
SEBASTIAN
--What the fuck were you going to do with a hand shovel?
Ezra shrugs.
EZRA
It was the best weapon I could find. Dad keeps his guns under lock and key.
Sebastian and Thomas chuckle.
THOMAS
Yeah, sure. Because a kitchen knife won't work.
Thomas pulls out a giant knife from his pocket. Then, Hazell appears from behind Ezra. He is carrying a hammer in one hand. Ezra looks at the hammer and stiffens.
HAZELL
A hand shovel isn't doing shit. Even this hammer of mine would make a better dent.
Verma rummages in her coat and pulls out a taser.
VERMA
I have a Taser.
She flicks it on and off twice. Sebastian pulls out a lighter and a small handgun.
SEBASTIAN
And I have a knife and my dad's pistol. Thankfully, my dad isn't as much of a safety freak as yours, Ezra.
Ezra gulps.
EZRA
Geez... So, uh, did you hear about what Principal Gaye said?
Sebastian pats Ezra's shoulders.
SEBASTIAN
The whole school did. Losing Peterson was the worst and best thing that happened to us. Happy Early Halloween, man. Enjoy it while it lasts.
THOMAS
Your dad is still hosting Thanksgiving dinner, right, Verma?
VERMA
Yeah.
There's another rustle in the bushes from where Thomas was pointing before. Liza emerges with a flashlight in hand.
LIZA
Finally! Here you are... The next time we have a cult meeting in the middle of the woods, make sure we all know before one of us becomes the next cold case.
HAZELL
Funny.
Liza groans.
LIZA
You're a jerk.
THOMAS
So, did you find any clues with that shovel?
Panic flushes Ezra's cheeks as he looks at Hazell, who grins like an idiot.
EZRA
I-I, uh... No, I haven't found anything.
The group starts to wander away from the woods, following the river.
THOMAS
I'm hungry. Is anyone else hungry?
SEBASTIAN
I thought you were trying to become a bodybuilder.
Thomas shrugs.
THOMAS
I have a fast metabolism. Food goes straight through me.
SEBASTIAN
Says the guy who couldn't shit for a week after gulping down a week's worth of tacos: fast metabolism, my ass.
Sebastian punches Thomas's shoulder.
VERMA
Well, this is taking us nowhere... Do you guys want to head to Bobby's Boston Burgers and catch a movie afterward?
LIZA
Sure. Why not?
THOMAS
Yeah, I'm down.
EZRA
Yes, a movie will be better than walking out here...
Sebastian stops and looks at Ezra.
SEBASTIAN
Are you scared?
Ezra glances at Hazell, who's smiling.
LIZA
The only reason I came was because we were a group, but don't think I won't bail on your asses for a second. It's a serial killer we are talking about.
VERMA
What if the killer is still here, watching us from a distance?
She searches the vast forest with her flashlight.
SEBASTIAN
That son of a bitch won't do anything with me and Mr. Bodybuilder present. Even Hazell might calm him down with that permanent smile of his.
Sebastian searches the woods with his eyes.
SEBASTIAN
(Yelling)
YOU HEAR THAT, YOU SELFISH ASSHOLE!
Hazell stifles a laugh.
HAZELL
Yeah, like that'll help.
SEBASTIAN
What?
HAZELL
You're challenging the killer.
SEBASTIAN
Shut up, Hazell. I'm not challenging shit!
Ezra looks at Hazell and gulps.
EZRA
I suggest we watch that movie before we turn into unsolved cases for my father to investigate.
VERMA
Agreed.
They all nod silently, watching their breath fog in the cold night air.
LIZA
With that decided... A race to the van!
Liza takes off, with Thomas chasing behind her.
THOMAS
Liza, you dumbass! It's not safe for you to run off like that.
Ezra glances at Hazell, who is eyeing the quickly vanishing shapes of Thomas and Liza.
INT. MOVIE THEATER - NIGHT
The lights flicker to silence as the movie PSYCHO plays. Hazell sits next to Liza, and Ezra nervously looks at them while he digs his hand into his bag of movie theater popcorn. On the screen, the killer with the crazy smile maniacally butchers and dismembers a girl in a shower. Sebastian leans in from the seat behind Ezra.
SEBASTIAN
(Whispering)
Hey Ez, do you see that? It's Vanessa Carlton sitting all alone!
Hazell walks toward the exit.
EZRA
Yeah?
Ezra's eyes were drawn to the lonesome cheer captain in the corner of the dark theater.
SEBASTIAN
By the way, where's Thomas?
EZRA
I saw them arguing before. Maybe he went to buy her chocolate to apologize?
VERMA
(Angrily whispering)
Shut up, Sebastian and Ezra. We're trying to watch a movie.
Verma throws a handful of popcorn at Sebastian and Ezra, Sebastian huffs, throwing popcorn back at her. The cinema continues for a while. Ezra worries when he glances around and doesn't see Hazell. A lady on the screen screams, followed by another harrowing scream outside the theater.
Some people stand up from their seats and rush out of the theater to see the matter. Then, JACKSON KAI, a football player, runs inside.
JACKSON
(Yelling)
Thomas is dead!
Chaos ensues as people panic. More harrowing screams echo throughout the room, mixing the movie and the terrible reality. Soon, sirens wail in the distance, and Hazell walks in, his shirt and hands soaked in blood. Verma screams, and Sebastian hugs her, soothing her.
JACKSON
He tried to save him, but it was too late. The bastard killer escaped from right under our noses.
Ezra looks at his brother, who has a curious expression. He SLAMS his popcorn to the ground.
EXT. MOVIE THEATER - NIGHT
Ezra paces in panic. Hazell stares at the frantic people around them. A familiar siren wails nearby as about a dozen cops watch them. Mr. Klein charges in the past his coworkers.
MR. KLEIN
(Angry, panicked)
What happened?
Hazell looks at the blood on his hands and stays silent.
MR. KLEIN
Son, I know this must be harsh for you, but I was hoping you could tell me...
Mr. Klein kneels in front of his son. Ezra stops pacing.
MR. KLEIN
Where were you when the killer murdered Thomas?
EZRA
He... He was in the restroom! Ask Jackson Kai. Hazell was trying to keep Thomas from bleeding out. That's why he's covered in blood!
Mr. Klein gets up and looks at his other son.
MR. KLEIN
I'll have plenty of time to interrogate you two. Wait here. I'll take us home in a bit.
INT. BEDROOM - NIGHT
The brothers are each sitting on their beds. They both have changed clothes and are staring at each other. There is tension in the air.
EZRA
Why?
HAZELL
Why what, Ez?
Ezra scoffs.
EZRA
Why Thomas? He was our friend! And so soon after Peterson? What were you thinking?
Hazell smiles good-natured.
HAZELL
Oh, so you are worried about my modus operandi. Don't worry. It wasn't me this time.
EZRA
Do you expect me to believe that?
HAZELL
Yes, I have no reason to lie to you after all... I thought of killing him, but someone else got to him first.
A conflicted Ezra looks at his brother Hazell. He sees the sincerity in his eyes, and that worries him.
EZRA
So, we have a second killer in town...
HAZELL
I know! Isn't that fascinating?
Ezra ignores his brother, turns off the lights, and goes to bed, his face draining white, emotionless.
INT. BEDROOM - MORNING
It is morning before school. Hazell is down eating breakfast, While Ezra struggles to tie his shoelaces and grabs his notebook. A handwritten piece of paper pokes from one of his brother's crime scene investigation books. It is a list of names, all known by him, including Peterson James and Thomas Chang—the former with a checkmark on it with a question mark.
EZRA
(Angry whisper)
Dammit, Hazell!
Ezra puts the paper, more neatly folded, back into the book and walks towards the dining room.
INT. MS. HALE'S OFFICE - DAY
A steaming teacup sits lonely as the older woman sits in her swivel chair with a worried look. In front of her, a strangely quiet Ezra sits. He takes a breath.
EZRA
I know you told me not to feel responsible for something that wasn't my fault, but I was there, you know? 40 or so feet, and it just... Happened...
Ms. Hale adjusts her glasses. Ezra shifts, looking around the vast room. Certificates line the baby blue walls and a cat clock in the distance ticks. Dozens of medical books sit on a bookshelf. Ms. Hale sips her tea.
EZRA
I wish...
(beat)
I wish that things hadn't turned so violent and chaotic. I wish I could do something to keep it from continuing, but...
He looks at her again, her face attentive to his words. She is beautiful, but the image is interrupted by a flash vision of her bloodied face, skull caved in. He shakes his head.
MS. HALE
There are already people working on that, Mr. Klein. People should worry about what is nearby us, our friends and family, and make each present moment as happy as possible. This feels like a more profound issue our sessions can't solve. I can recommend a psychiatrist to your parents?
Ezra takes a long pause, occasionally sipping some of his tea.
EZRA
You're right, Ms. Hale.
He gets up from his chair and goes to the door.
MS. HALE
I'll recommend a list of psychiatrists to your parents.
He stands and exits the office.
INT. SCHOOL HALLWAY - DAY
People gather around Thomas's locker, leaving gifts in his memory. Ezra walks between people, places a group photo of their gang, and retreats. The football team marches down the hallway, chanting "Thomas Chang" in a firm voice with sad shouts.
A teary-eyed girl leaves a white rose under Thomas's locker. It contrasts heavily with the red ones other people had left. Ezra follows her with his eyes as she walks away.
From behind, Ezra feels someone poking his sides, which startles him.
LIZA
Man, you are staring... Why don't you go and introduce yourself?
EZRA
Eh...
LIZA
You're so stupid. She likes you too.
The girl is out of sight. Ezra turns to look at Liza as his mind thinks of Ms. Hale.
EZRA
I know.
Ezra spots jocks hassling KIMBERLY DAILY, a punk-rock teen. He heads over, with Liza who swiftly SLAMS a jock into a locker.
LIZA
(firm and unwavering)
Hey, back off!
One of the JOCKS, a burly guy with a cocky smirk, takes a step forward.
JOCK
(sneering)
What's your problem, Liza?
Erza calms himself.
Ezra
(firmly)
She said, back off.
Tension hangs thick in the air as the JOCKS exchange uncertain glances, unsure of how to proceed.
Ezra
Yeah, you heard her. Just leave Kimberly alone.
MR. GAYE turns the corner, his eyes locking onto the impending altercation. He approaches swiftly.
MR. GAYE
(shouting)
Break it up!
The JOCKS begrudgingly disperse, leaving Kimberly and Liza under Ezra's protection. Mr. Gaye then heads down the hallway with the JOCKS, narrowing the distance between Kim, Liza, and Ezra.
KIMBERLY
(grateful)
Thanks. But next time, let me handle those idiots myself.
LIZA
(muttering sarcastically)
Sure, Kim. I'll gladly watch you give those jerks an ass-whoop.
Kimberly retrieves a cigarette, lights it, and takes a puff.
KIMBERLY
(to Liz)
Thanks.
Kimberly pats Liza on the back, slings her bag over her shoulder, and walks away, exhaling smoke as she goes.
LIZA
(irritated)
What a bitch.
Liza grumbles and then turns, marching off in the opposite direction, leaving Ezra standing alone in the middle of the school hallway.
.EXT. A ROAD ON THE OUTSKIRTS OF TOWN - DAY
Ezra and Hazell are walking down the road, with the latter ahead. Ezra walks with his head down while Hazell whistles, relaxed and happy, using a big stick as a fake cane for a "gentleman walk." Ezra takes a glance at his brother.
EZRA
(Mumbling to himself)
What's going on with him? He looks weirder than usual...
Hazell turns around.
HAZELL
You know, things are going to get quite interesting very soon.
EZRA
(sarcastic)
Even more, than they are now?
Hazell turns ahead and resumes walking.
HAZELL
Yeah! With a fellow killer around, very close to us... Who will get caught first?
EZRA
(Mumbles)
I hope it's you...
Hazell, who had seen something up ahead that caught his attention, ran to the side of the road and kneeled in front of something.
HAZELL
And speak of the devil. Come here, Ez!
Ezra rushes to his brother's side, and a grim sight welcomes him: a human corpse lies there, face to the ground, barely covered by bushes, branches, and leaves.
HAZELL
It might be recent. No wild animal has taken a bite yet.
Hazell then starts poking the corpse with his stick. Ezra takes a couple of steps back while His brother tries to turn the corpse's face so that he can see it.
HAZELL
It better not be someone from my list...
EZRA
Leave it alone, Hazell. That's gross.
Hazell stops playing with the corpse and looks at his brother before standing up.
HAZELL
Why is it so touchy?
EZRA
We should go. The killer could still be around and we could leave clues that incriminate us for something we didn't do.
Beat.
HAZELL
How about Blockbuster?
EZRA
(Voice slightly
trembling)
Sure.
INT. A BLOCKBUSTER STORE - DAY
The store is mostly empty, with only a handful of clients wandering around. Ezra goes to the counter while trying to keep an eye on his brother, who is searching the aisles for something to rent.
CLAIRE DONOVAN
Hello, is there something I can help you with?
Ezra turns to the voice behind the counter, and his face is full of surprise: it is the girl he saw leaving the white rose on Thomas' locker.
EZRA
(Mumbling)
Eh... He-hello!
Her face remains fixated on a small, complimentary smile. Ezra looks at her, studying her features, until his eyes find a small card on her left breast which reads, "HI, MY NAME IS CLAIRE DONOVAN." His expression is now one of recognition. Her name was on Hazell's list.
EZRA
You're from school. I saw you leaving something at Thomas's locker. Were you two close?
Her smile disappears, and she now looks sad.
CLAIRE DONOVAN
That's not your business.
EZRA
Sorry, I'm just worried about you. Things are dangerous now in the town, and...
She glares at him, annoyed.
CLAIRE DONOVAN
(Snappy)
Is there something store-related I can help you with?
Ezra pauses. He wants to help her but can't think how.
HAZELL
Ez, I found it!
Ezra looks desperate as his brother comes to the counter. Noticing the girl, Hazell smiles brightly at her and presents the movie he selected.
HAZELL
Hello. We want to rent this—Thomas' favorite. We should watch it with the other guys.
The girl, before, focuses on Hazell's smile directed at her, before...
INT. LIZA'S LIVING ROOM - NIGHT
The rain pours outside, its rhythmic melody tapping on the windowpane. EZRA observes the thunderstorm from LIZA's expansive living room. White walls enclose them, contrasting with the darkness outside. LIZA stands behind him, carrying one of her father's vodka bottles and smoking a cigar from his secret cabinet, a forbidden territory they dared not venture into.
LIZA
You should have said something to Claire, Ezra.
EZRA sinks into the side of her father's chair.
EZRA
I didn't want to.
The rain intensifies outside, adding to the symphony of nature.
LIZA gives him a knowing look but dismisses it, attributing it to the weight of the situation.
LIZA pours more vodka into their glasses as EZRA observes.
LIZA
It's getting worse out there, Ez. I mean, first, it was just a couple of missing persons, and now these murders...
EZRA feigns shock.
EZRA
Yeah.
LIZA hands him the bottle, and he takes a sip.
LIZA
We need to do something, Ez. We can't just sit here and pretend everything's normal.
EZRA nods in agreement.
EZRA
I agree, but we need to be smart about this. Maybe we should go to the authorities and share what we know. They have the resources to handle it.
LIZA hesitates.
LIZA
I don't trust the authorities, Ez. They've been ineffective so far. They found another body in the woods.
Ezra's brows crease.
Ezra
Where?
Liza
The old cabin in the woods.
Ezra nods.
Ezra
Promise me you won't go chasing serial killers, Liza. It's not safe for any of us.
Liza
You know I can't...
Ezra growls. Liza takes another gulp of alcohol.
Ezra
(scolding)
Liza!
Liza
Fine. I won't. I promise.
INT. Ezra's LIVING ROOM - NIGHT
The rain outside has transformed into a gentle drizzle. EZRA enters the bedroom, shutting down Hazell's blaring music.
EZRA
Hazell, I need to ask you something, and I need you to be completely honest with me.
HAZELL looks up from his comic.
HAZELL
Of course.
EZRA
Have you been near the old mill recently?
HAZELL shakes his head.
HAZELL
No, Ez. Why would you even think that?
EZRA
Liza and I heard about another murder in the woods, and, well, things are getting out of hand in town. I needed to make sure.
HAZELL's expression shifts to concern.
HAZELL
Murder? Again.
Hazell flips a page.
EZRA
There's another serial killer on the loose, Hazell. Liza and I are trying to figure out what's happening.
HAZELL
Another serial killer? In our town? How fun!
EZRA hesitates.
EZRA
Just... be careful, Hazell.
INT. LiVING ROOM - DAY
Ezra, Hazell, Liza, Sebastian, and Verma are in the twin's house watching "Predator," a bowl of popcorn passing from one to another. The atmosphere is quiet but not relaxed. Major Schaefer was covered in mud on the big TV screen, quietly waiting for the creature to appear. Suddenly, a voice in the room startled most of the teenagers.
MR. KLEIN
Hey kids, how are you doing?
LIZA, SEBASTIAN, VERMA
Hi Mr. Klein!
EZRA
Hello dad. We're doing fine, just here watching a movie.
HAZELL
Ha! Dumb aliens.
Hazell and Ezra glance at each one of them before he sighs. He looks tired.
MR. KLEIN
Good to know but remember that there's a game tonight and that there will be a vigil for the murder victims.
HAZELL
Don't worry, Dad, I'll be sure to remind them.
MR. KLEIN
Remember, stay together, don't let that bastard catch you alone.
INT. School Hallway - morning

INT. HIGH SCHOOL HALLWAY - DAY
Sebastian slams his locker shut and turns to face Ezra and Liza.
SEBASTIAN
You guys saw the killer?
His voice trembles with fear and disbelief.
LIZA
(applying lipgloss)
Ez found the killer.
Her tone is casual, but it sends shivers down Ezra's spine.
SEBASTIAN
Seriously?
His eyes widen further, disbelief palpable.
EZRA
(grimly)
It was her, Seb. I saw her with my own eyes.
Liza's gaze flicks between them.
Liza
What are we going to do?
Sebastian's resolve hardens.
SEBASTIAN
We need to tell someone.
Liza disagrees.
LIZA
No. We can't risk involving anyone else. Not—

SEBASTIAN
But what if she comes after us?
Liza remains confident.
LIZA
We'll be ready. We stick together, stay vigilant, and watch each other's backs.
Ezra's anxiety bubbles up.
EZRA
And if that's not enough?
Liza's confidence falters slightly.
LIZA
Then we'll figure it out together.
Sebastian tries to lighten the mood, but Ezra isn't having it.
SEBASTIAN
She must be a freak in bed.
Ezra scolds Sebastian.
EZRA
Seb, this isn't the time for jokes. This is serious.
Sebastian apologizes, sheepish.
SEBASTIAN
Sorry. It's just... I don't know how else to deal with this.
Liza redirects the conversation.
LIZA
We deal with it by staying focused.
Ezra agrees.
EZRA
She's right, Seb.
Sebastian gets serious again.
SEBASTIAN
Okay. So what's our next move?
Liza takes charge.
LIZA
First, we need to gather as much information as possible. Who we're dealing with, what she's capable of, and who she's targeting.
Sebastian nods, eager to take action.
SEBASTIAN
And then what?
Ezra chimes in.
EZRA
We come up with a plan.
Sebastian tries to lighten the mood again.
SEBASTIAN
Mystery Inc, eat our hearts out!
Sebastian slams his locker.
INT./EXT. THE SCHOOL'S FOOTBALL STADIUM - NIGHT
INT. STADIUM - NIGHT / EXT. THE SCHOOL'S FOOTBALL STADIUM - NIGHT
Ezra and Hazell stand amidst a somber crowd, their gazes fixed on the empty field.
EZRA
Can't believe he's gone.
His words linger in the heavy air, a mournful tribute to their departed friend.
HAZELL
Life goes on, Ez.
Hazell's tone lacks the sorrow Ezra feels, a disconcerting contrast that leaves him uneasy.
As the game commences, tension crackles through the crowd like live wire.
EZRA
Let's just get this over with.
He taps his knee nervously, the weight of their shared secret bearing down on him.
HAZELL
Relax, they're just here for the game.
Hazell's attempt at reassurance falls flat, failing to ease Ezra's nerves.
The referee's whistle pierces the air, marking the match's beginning.
EZRA
Sure.
He musters a cheer, but his thoughts are elsewhere, haunted by guilt and suspicion.
Suddenly, darkness descends, enveloping the stadium in chaos.
HAZELL
Damn.
Ezra's panic intensifies, the darkness amplifying his fears.
HAZELL (CONT'D)
Hey, easy, Ez. It's just a power outage.
Ezra struggles to calm himself, the darkness a stark reminder of their hidden truths.
Emergency lights flicker to life, casting eerie shadows across the stadium.
EZRA
Looks like we're not completely in the dark.
But any relief Ezra anticipates is overshadowed by the emergence of ominous banners unfurling from the rafters.
EZRA (CONT'D)
Who would do this?
His fear reverberates in the murmurs around him.
HAZELL
Let them watch.
Hazell's indifference deepens Ezra's unease.
EZRA
Hazell, this isn't just some sick joke. Someone knows.
HAZELL
Knows what, Ez? That you're too easy to rattle?
Ezra's suspicions intensify, but Hazell remains unfazed.
HAZELL (CONT'D)
Relax. Even if it's not a prank, they've got nothing on us.
Ezra can't shake the feeling of being watched, even as Hazell dismisses the threat.
HAZELL (CONT'D)
Besides, if someone's watching, let's give them a good show.
Ezra looks around as the stadium fills up, waiting for his friends. Some people walk, trying to reach their seats, and he struggles to tell them they are reserved. While the teams warm up in the field, the trainer for the local team, a man in his mid-forties with a slight beer belly and a baseball cap hiding his baldness, grabs a loudspeaker to announce something in the distance.
The game then starts as the rest of the gang arrives and sits down.
SEBASTIAN
Sorry man, the girls couldn't decide if they wanted a hot dong or to stay on a diet.
LIZA
Shut up!
VERMA
If they were made by the same people as last time, even you would have been shitting your bowels out.
HAZELL
What a horrible way to die.
Ezra looks at his brother, fearful of what he might be plotting, but for a while, everything seems normal.
HAZELL
Hey everyone, gotta go to the bathroom, be right back.
SEBASTIAN
Don't shit yourself to death.
Verma and Liza wave him away, too focused on the game. Ezra looks at him, internally debating whether he should go with him, but when their school's team scores and the people in the stadium erupt into celebration, he loses sight of Hazell. He looks around and sees everyone present caught up in the excitement of the game. He smiles sadly. It should always be like this. Hazell has yet to come back, and Ezra panics internally. He stands up.
EZRA
I'll be right back too.
But he isn't listening, rushing as he is through the people in the stands.
INT. BATHROOM - BEHIND BLEACHERS - NIGHT
As he gets closer, Ezra's breathing becomes more labored, dread filling his mind. He prays to whatever may heed his plea. He finds the door to the women's bathroom and hears heavy breathing inside. He opens the door and sees Hazell covered in blood and looming over a body with a wrench in his hand.
Despite the position and the caved skull, Ezra recognizes the girl: Claire Donovan. Ezra leans to the side and vomits. He wipes his mouth on his sleeve and recovers.
EZRA
Hazell, for the love of God...
HAZELL
(Smiling, Unfazed)
Hey, who's winning?
EZRA
We have to get going, the game is about to end, and someone is bound to find this... THIS!
HAZELL
(Pointing at the body)
What about the girl?
EZRA
Please don't act like you care about her.
Ezra grabs his brother by the hand and pulls him out of the bathroom, directly to their car.
INT. MOVING CAR - NIGHT
Buildings give way to trees, which blur in the dark of night as Ezra speeds up, with Hazell looking at him curiously.
HAZELL
Did you know that Thomas was two- timing Verma with that girl Claire?
Ezra groans and answers without taking his eyes away from the road.
EZRA
Is that why you killed her?
HAZELL
Not really. I had already decided on that before I discovered the affair...
(beat)
I did her a favor. That way, she can be reunited with Thomas.
Hearing that, Ezra slams on the brakes sharply.
HAZELL
Wow, Ez! Be careful with your driving!
EZRA
Or what? I might kill us?
His twin grins. A frustrated Ezra opens the door of their car and gets out.
EZRA
We have to get rid of your stained clothes. Come on. There's a river nearby.
HAZELL
Thank God for leather seats and how easy they are to clean...there is no way of explaining that to Dad.
Ezra doesn't answer as he opens the trunk, something out of it. With the SLAM of the trunk's closing...
EXT. NEAR A RIVER - NIGHT
The roar of the river and the cricket's concerto are the only sounds accompanying the brothers on this eerie night. Ezra stands quietly, looking up at the moon for answers or comfort. Meanwhile, Hazell is putting on the clean clothes his brother gave him.
HAZELL
So, the dirty ones go to the river? Very smart, Ez. With how strong the current is, they'll never find it.
He goes to the river's edge and throws the bloodied clothes to the roaring waters.
EZRA
I'm tired, Haz.
HAZELL
A little bit early for that. The night is young!
Ezra turns to look at him, his body trembling with frustration.
EZRA
No! I'm tired of this bullshit of yours! Why do you kill people, Hazell? Why not just leave them be?
HAZELL
It's fun.
EZRA
Fun, my ass! You're growing bold and bored with killing so close to each other, which is dangerous for others... And for us.
Ezra approaches Hazell, putting his hand inside his pocket and pulling something out. It's a pocket knife. He raises it as he walks toward Hazell, and the blade shines ominously under the moonlight.
HAZELL
Huh... It makes sense. You prefer blunt objects, and I prefer sharp ones.
Ezra pushes his twin against a tree and holds the knife against his neck.
EZRA
Why? Why ruin so many lives? Do I have to be related to you?
Hazell is unfazed by his brother and instead looks at him with twisted compassion.
HAZELL
We're twin brothers, Ez, part of the same genes... I doubt you would have covered up for me the first time if not for that.
EZRA
That was a mistake...
Ezra pushes the blade into his brother's skin, drawing a thin line of blood.
HAZELL
(Smiling)
Sure it was, Ez.
Anger and doubt plague Ezra as he kicks a rock. Nearby, two pairs of eyes watch the boys in the brush.
INT. CLUTTERED ROOM - night
Two plain envelopes lie on the bedspread, stark against the cluttered room. One bears the name "Ezra Klein," the other "Hazell."
EZRA
Ready?
HAZELL
Always.
Ezra hesitates, his fingers trembling as he opens his envelope.
EZRA
Damn it...
Hazell, unfazed, opens his envelope with ease.
HAZELL
Looks like we've got ourselves a fan.
EZRA
Something's wrong. This isn't a game.
Hazell brushes it off, dismissing the seriousness.
HAZELL
Let them come then. We're not scared.
EZRA
Maybe we shouldn't be doing this anymore
Hazel's resolve is unwavering.
HAZELL
Regret's a waste of time. Fear's for the prey, not the predators.
Ezra questions their future path, but Hazell remains steadfast.
Ezra
And what if we end up being both?
HAZELL
Then we'll deal with it—Together.
Hazell leaves.
INT. THE BATHROOMS BEHIND THE BLEACHERS - NIGHT
A group of girls is chatting while walking toward the bathroom, the game is already finished, and the Vigil is about to start. In the dimly lit hallway, they think the liquid from under the bathroom door is water.
GIRL 1
A broken pipe? Principal Gaye should put more budget into fixing the building...
GIRL 2
Wait, I don't think that's...
The first girl opens the door, and they all realize that the liquid is blood flowing from the caved skull of the late Claire Donovan. Their screams pierce the night, reaching the ears of people just starting to celebrate.
INT. MS. HALE'S OFFICE - DAY
The room's interior feels darker, not because of a lack of light but because of the mood of the two people inside. The usual cups of smoking hot tea are in front of each person, but no one moves. Ms. Hale looks worried but tries to keep her composure while Ezra sits, hugging his legs against his chest.
EZRA
I met her.
MS. HALE
Who?
EZRA
Claire Donovan. She was working in the Blockbuster down Franklin Street... I talked to her...
Ezra groans and lowers his head to hide it.
MS. HALE
The school should have been closed as soon as Thomas Chang died.
EZRA
(Raising his head slowly,
cautiously.)
Yeah... Maybe even when Pete died. I wish it were me and not Pete or Thomas.
MS. HALE
Unfortunately, people die every day, Ezra.
Ezra looks at her directly. He is fascinated by the older woman, her intelligent eyes, compassionate demeanor, and those luscious deep red lips that remind him of...
EZRA
(Shaking his head)
Ms. Hale? What if I--
Ezra pauses, his mind drifting to the cat clock on the wall behind Ms. Hale's desk.
INT. POLICE STATION - DAY
Mr. Klein walks behind a podium. The conference room is filled with reporters from news outlets, who are all restless and hungry for answers.
REPORTER
Detective Klein, what can you say about the last victims? Why are murders getting more frequent?
Cameras start flashing, and Mr. Klein takes a deep breath.
MR. KLEIN
While there is no conclusive evidence, the department has decided to perform a new method of analysis that uses DNA. We should have results soon.
This information excites the reporters, who bombard Mr. Klein with more questions and camera flashes. He tries to speak up, but the uproar swallows his attempts. He walks off the podium, then...
INT.  Home - - Living Room - - day
The clock on the wall ticks. Hazell sits across from Ezra, his gaze fixed on some unseen point in the distance. Ezra fidgets on the couch.
HAZELL
Sit still, Ez.
Hazell's voice, a low growl, pierces the stillness.
EZRA
(whispering)
Sorry.
Ezra tries to obey, but his leg bounces uncontrollably. The atmosphere is heavy with tension.
Suddenly, the front door creaks open. Dad enters, accompanied by Officer Daniels.
DAD
Boys...
The room falls silent. Officer Daniels delivers the news of a grim discovery in the woods.
OFFICER DANIELS
There's been a discovery. In the woods. A body.
The name Claire Simmons hangs in the air like a heavy shroud.
EZRA
Can't be...
Ezra's voice breaks. Hazell remains eerily still, his eyes reflecting nothing.
OFFICER DANIELS
It's Claire Simmons. Do you boys happen to know anything about this?
The weight of the truth settles over them. Ezra guides Hazell away from their father and Officer Daniels.
EZRA
You can't keep doing this, Hazell.
Hazell's face betrays no emotion.
HAZELL
Why would I stop, Ez? This is what I'm good at.
EZRA
Good at killing?
HAZELL
It's nature, brother. Survival of the fittest.
The chilling exchange leaves Ezra reeling, unable to comprehend his brother's detachment.
INT. HAZELL AND EZRA'S BEDROOM - NIGHT
The corridor seemed to stretch endlessly behind him as Hazell stepped away from Ezra's grasp, each step punctuating the finality of his words.
EZRA
(pleading)
Please, think about what you're saying.
HAZELL
(coolly)
Thinking is your domain, Ezra. I act. That's the difference between us.
Ezra reads the headline, his thumb hovering over the screen. Panic claws its way up his throat as he absorbs the details.
He pushes off the bed, determination in his steps as he approaches their shared bedroom, where secrets linger like shadows.
EZRA
(hesitant)
Did you...
HAZELL
(innocent)
Did I what?
The tension crackles between them as Ezra grapples with doubt.
EZRA
(resolute)
Did you have anything to do with it, Hazell?
Hazell's facade cracks, annoyance seeping through.
HAZELL
(defensive)
Back off, Ez. You're barking up the wrong tree.
Ezra presses on, unwilling to let the truth evade him.
EZRA
(determined)
Prove it.
Hazell's calm demeanor falters, but he quickly regains control.
HAZELL
(smooth)
I was at the library. Mrs. Dalloway saw me there till closing.
Ezra's resolve wavers, torn between trust and suspicion.
EZRA
(uncertain)
Okay, Hazell.
But doubt lingers, a persistent frost in the air.
HAZELL
(sure)
See? No grand mystery here.
Yet the truth remains elusive, hidden in the shadows of their shared secrets.
The room feels smaller, suffocating under the weight of their unspoken accusations.
HAZELL
(angry)
Why can't you just drop it?
EZRA
(bitter)
Because it doesn't add up!
Their argument escalates, the room shrinking with every accusation.
HAZELL
(rage)
You're just looking for someone to blame!
The dim light flickers, uncertainty hanging heavy in the air as they stare each other down, locked in a battle of truth and deception.
INT. DINING ROOM - MORNING
The whole family sits eating breakfast, no words are spoken, and the only sound is the cling-clank of the forks and knives against the glass plates. Hazell smiles at everyone, his mother smiles back, and his father nods at him, but Ezra ignores him, avoiding looking or addressing him, except for a glance at the thin line in his brother's neck. The phone suddenly rings.
MR. KLEIN
I'll go.
Mr. Klein then gets up and goes to the living room. The rest of the family continues eating breakfast until they hear his screaming voice.
MR. KLEIN
Goddammit!, Again, so soon?
(beat)
Yeah, yeah, I know. I'll be there I n ten... No, five minutes.
He goes back to the dining room, and everyone looks at him.
MR. KLEIN
Sorry, I'll have to cut the breakfast short. They found another body.
He kisses his wife and grabs his coat folded on the back of his chair.
EZRA
(Anxiously)
Who... Who was this time?
MR. KLEIN
Ms. Hale, your school's counselor.
Ezra's eyes widen in shock.
HAZELL
(Grinning)
Shit...
Ezra gives his brother a murderous look, then...
EXT. A FOREST PATH - LATE AFTERNOON
The twins Ezra and Hazell are taking a walk. Despite daylight still being present, shadows from the treetops and clouds dampen the already sour mood of Ezra, who is walking ahead with accentuated, angry steps. Behind him, his twin brother Hazell is a stark contrast as he whistles a song. This makes Ezra stop and turn toward him.
EZRA
Would you please shut the fuck up? I came here to think.
HAZELL
(Playfully)
Why are you so angry, Ez? Did Ms. Hale's death affect you that much?
EZRA
And what if it did?
HAZELL
I thought the knife thing the other night was just a one-time fluke!
EZRA
Shut up.
HAZELL
You want to do something, right? I don't care much about vengeance, but what kind of brother would I be if I didn't help you with this?
EZRA
I'm not like you!
HAZELL
Well, yeah, you're a nervous wreck...
EZRA
You know I'm not talking about that! I'm not a killer!
HAZELL
The law would still find you guilty.
EZRA
I didn't want to... it was an impulse... I was trying to protect...
Hazell shifts closer to Ezra.
HAZELL
Me? You? It's all the same. Smith, Johnson, Williams, Peterson, James... You were part of it, Ez, and I caught you staring, hungry for more blood.
EZRA
What about Thomas, Ms. Hale, and that body we found on the road?
HAZELL
Oh, you know that wasn't me... I would have liked to kill them too, but...
A snapping twig alerts the twins, who quickly turn toward the sound and see...
VERMA AND SEBASTIAN
Fuck...
HAZELL
What do we have here? An impromptu audience?
EZRA
Don't even think about it...
HAZELL
Oh, Ez, I don't think. I act.
A rock hits Ezra in the face, and he falls, stunned. Through his blurry vision, Ezra sees in quick flashes how his brother runs toward their two friends and hits Sebastian in the head with a hammer. Verma tries to get up and run, but Hazell throws the hammer at her head, knocking her unconscious. A bloodied Sebastian tries to take Hazell by surprise, but he reacts faster and kicks him in the head.
HAZELL
Well, that was easier than I thought it would be...
Hazell moves toward Verma, twisting the hammer in his palm before, SMASH!
EZRA
Hazell no!
CRUNCH. The wet cracking sound of a skull breaking reaches Ezra's ears as his brother hits Verma once, twice, thrice.
HAZELL
That'll do it.
As Hazell walks toward Sebastian, a noise in the distance catches the twins' attention.
HAZELL
Party crashers?
Ezra gets up, an impassive expression coating his face.
EZRA
Shit.
INT. SCHOOL - NIGHT
The hallway is entirely silent and mostly dark as the two brothers carefully walk toward the door to the school's kitchen. Ezra hesitates for an instant before he uses a lock- pick to open the door while Hazell carries a big sack on his back. The door opens, and they enter.
EZRA
This is disgusting.
HAZELL
If you cared so much about life, you wouldn't be helping me. Let's finish this soon... I bet even our fellow killer wouldn't have thought of this.
Ezra glances at his brother and softly shakes his head before searching for the pot containing the stew for the next day's lunch. Hazell opens the bag a little and looks inside. He leans over, about to puke, but chokes back.
HAZELL
Verma Stew. Bon appetite.
Ezra huffs but otherwise keeps quiet. Hazell dumps Verma chunks into the pot.
INT. SCHOOL CAFETERIA - DAY
The room is bustling with students. EZRA, a troubled teenager, enters and scans the room. His gaze lands on LIZA, who sits alone, distant.
EZRA
Hey, Liza.
Liza barely acknowledges him, her focus elsewhere.
EZRA (cont'd)
You okay?
Silence hangs between them, tense and palpable.
EZRA (cont'd)
Feels like you're avoiding me.
Ezra takes a seat opposite Liza, searching her eyes for answers.
EZRA (cont'd)
What's going on?
In the distance, the cheerleaders grimace, digging their spoons into the soup stew, but the piece one pulls out... is human flesh.
CHEERLEADER ONE
WHAT THE FUCK!?
Screams from the cheerleader alert the nearby teachers, but before they can reach her, similar screams throughout the cafeteria as more and more students find chopped and half-raw human body parts in their stew echo. Liza stares, stunned to find a diamond earring she gave VERMA sitting in the soup.
Int. SCHOOL COURTYARD - DAY
Ezra finds HAZELL, his twin brother, leaning against a tree.
Ezra
Something's off about Liza.
Hazell leans in.
Hazell
Maybe she's just stressed about exams.
Ezra
It's more than that. Feels like she's avoiding me. You think she knows?
Ezra's expression darkens at the implication.
Hazell
No way. We've been careful.
Hazell huffs.
Hazell
But, if she does, we're screwed.
Ezra
We can't hurt her. She's our friend.
Hazell
Innocence is a luxury we can't afford.
Ezra scoffs.
Ezra
We'll find another way. She's not a threat.
Hazell
If she knows, we're both done.
INT. POLICE STATION, AN OFFICE - DAY
Mr. Klein reads some files, a flask of liquor at hand's reach, and many cigarette butts on the ashtray. Suddenly, another officer comes barging into his office.
MR. KLEIN
Have you heard of knocking? Works great! It would be best if you tried it.
OFFICER
Sorry sir, but this is important. The DNA results came, and...
(beat)
You better see it by yourself.
The officer extends an open envelope to Mr. Klein, who carefully grabs it and pulls the paper inside to look at it.
MR. KLEIN
Impossible...
INT. LIVING ROOM - DAY
The Klein twins sit in front of each other with bags under their eyes, but while Hazell smiles like always, Ezra looks sick and depressed.
EZRA
They are going to come for us. We left Sebastian in a coma, Haz. What happens when he wakes up and points the finger at us?
HAZELL
We better go out with a bang.
EZRA
They were our friends...
The doorbell rang frantically. The twins look at each other. Ezra gets up and goes to the front door. He takes a deep breath and opens it.
LIZA
Ezra! You son of a bitch!
Liza lifts a shotgun, pointing it at Erza's chest. Ezra raises his hands and backs away from the doorway, letting Liza inside.
HAZELL
What's wrong, Liza?
LIZA
You asshole... you killed Verma, Sebastian, and Peterson... Sebastian is in the hospital.
Hazell slips his hand between the couch cushion to grab his knife, and Liza cocks the gun. She steps in and closes the door. Behind her, Ezra gulps when he notices a familiar glint in his brother's eyes.
HAZELL
Oh, really?
He gets up and greets Liza, now hiding something behind his back.
LIZA
Hazell, don't move, or I'll shoot you. My daddy trained me how to shoot a gun. He's military too.
EZRA
Liza, I...
HAZELL
Shush, don't spoil this moment, Ez.
Hazell opens his arms wide, holding a hammer in his left palm, allowing Liza a better shot. She freezes, staring at a grinning Hazell. Something in his eyes scares her, and she takes a step back.
LIZA
W-what?
HAZELL
You left out a few people, sweetheart. I killed Joshua Smith a few years ago... He was my first. And then, there was Claire. She was cheating on Verma. Did you know about that?
Liza spits at Hazell, hitting him in the face.
HAZELL
Lovely.
Hazell wipes spit from his cheek. Hazell spins the hammer in his palm. Erza moves in front of Liza.
EZRA
Run, Liza.
HAZELL
You won't get far!
She struggles to get up but runs out of the front door, thanks to Ezra blocking Hazell's path.
EZRA
No, Hazell, no more. I don't care what happens to me. I won't let you murder another person.
HAZELL
Huh... What a killjoy.
The sound of police sirens wails outside, and the amplified voice of their father is heard.
MR. KLEIN
(creaky and loud)
Hazell, and Ezra, walk out of the house and back toward my voice... Please, don't make this more complicated than it has to.
The twins look at each other. Behind them, Liza runs outside, drops her gun, raises her arms, and walks back, crying hysterically.
HAZELL
Great.
INT. COUNTY JAIL - HALLWAY IN FRONT OF A PRISON CELL - DAY
A detective emerges from a detention cell; his partner greets him but stops when he sees the disturbed expression on Hazell's face. The first detective stops and huffs, shaking his head as he grabs his coat from a nearby rack and puts it on.
DETECTIVE ONE
A pure psychopath.
INT. PRISON CELL - DAY
A handcuffed Hazell Klein cackles in a jail cell. We focus on the cell next door. Ezra lays still on his mattress, bottom bunk, emotionless as he stares at the wall, back to Hazell. Hazell slams his fist into the wall, blood soaking his knuckles.
HAZELL
BO-RING! I might die before the trial comes. I guess you were right, Ez... This is hell.
He whistles a melody and licks the blood from his fist.
HAZELL
Well, good luck surpassing the Verma-stew, Seba killer.
His laugh fills the room and the hallway outside.
INT. ANOTHER PRISON CELL - DAY
Ezra's body stiffens, as he lays on the floor, handcuffed and unmoving, almost catatonic. His brother's laughter resounds. Mr. Klein rounds the corner, his saddened eyes landing on his sons.
HAZELL
I broke Ezra.
Hazell shoves his shoe into his brothers' side.
MR. KLEIN
Enough, Hazell! This is not a game. You killed someone, for fuck sake.
Hazell grins wickedly, watching his father.
MR. KLEIN
What happened?
HAZELL
Do you honestly think Erza did this? As broken as he is? Do you think he could do something as sinister...
Mr. Klein snaps his fingers in Erza's direction. Nothing.
MR. KLEIN
Erza!
He snaps again. Ezra doesn't blink. Hazell cackles, watching Ezra stare at a wall. Mr. Klein grabs his radio.
MR. KLEIN
(Into his mic)
Hey, get me medical down here to check on one of the inmates.
COP 1 (V.O.)
(over the microphone)
Is he breathing?
Mr. Klein kicks the wall next to Ezra's face.
MR. KLEIN
Ezra!...
Ezra doesn't move.
MR. KLEIN
(into his microphone)
He's catatonic.
Mr. Klein kicks the wall again.
MR. KLEIN
Ezra!
Ezra snorts as if barely breathing. Mr. Klein looks closer. Blue lips, pale skin. Mr. Klein rushes to Ezra's side, rubbing his back.
MR. KLEIN
Ezra, breathe! Breathe.
Hazell laughs loudly.
MR. KLEIN
Breathe, goddamn it!
Ezra chokes, trying to breathe.
INT. POLICE STATION, AN OFFICE - DAY
Mr. Klein is watching an empty bottle of whiskey as if trying to get some answers or comfort from it now that the liquid amber is gone. A YOUNG OFFICER KNOCKS at his door.
MR. KLEIN
Come in.
A younger officer enters and offers him an apologetic look.
YOUNG OFFICER
Well, here is some good news. Ezra's going to make a full recovery.
Mr. Klein sighs in relief.
YOUNG OFFICER
And we have more information from the labs...
MR. KLEIN
Now what...?
He gulps.
YOUNG OFFICER
Well, sir, another set of DNA was found, and it is not from your sons. They might not be the only killers.
Mr. Klein stands, and the other officer steps back.
YOUNG OFFICER
They might not be the killers at all...
INT. GIRLS RESTROOM - PARK - DAY
Kimberly walks out of a park bathroom stall, blows a gum bubble and holds a lipstick tube in her hand.
She glances at the mirror and scrolls a message in red lipstick: "Free the Klein Boys." A slight smirk spreads across her face as she whistles the same tune Hazell whistles "Hungry like the Wolf".
A young girl lies motionless in the stall behind her, the floor around her soaked in blood.
Kimberly hears a faint rustling from the farthest cubicle. She grins wickedly and kicks open the door to reveal a young man frozen in terror. Kimberly flicks a switchblade glints menacingly in her hand.
The Man
Please...don't hurt me.
Kimberly chuckles darkly.
Kimberly
Oh, but, It'll be fun.
Kimberly lunges, the blade slicing through his back and into his chest. The boy's body bleeds profusely as footsteps near. A SLEEPY GUARD, Mid 40s, walks in, rubbing his tired eyes.
SECURITY GUARD
What the hell?
He looks at the dead young man and woman and narrows his eyes as Kimberly who leaps forward, plunging the knife deep into the guard's chest. POP... GURGLE. Blood spills from his lips as he collapses, his blood mixing with the young man and woman's. The light quickly fades from his eyes.
SIRENS wailed nearby. Kimberly glances at the victims with a cold, unfeeling stare and leaves the bathroom.
