Part 15
Ana went through the first door she came across and found herself in a small garden. She stopped crying over being an orphan long back, building up her inner strength, but when Rahul said those words, it hurt. She could feel it in the pit of her stomach and she couldn't stop the tears.
Suddenly she felt someone hands on her shoulder and she turned around. Mandy was right in front of her.
"I am an .... orphan!" The words came out of her mouth as she tried to control her crying.
"Not anymore!" Mandy hugged her. "Now you are part of my family. Don't cry honey. I can't erase your past pain, but will protect you in future." She rubbed her back to calm her down.
Ana stopped crying, but didn't let her go and held on to her till her strength returned back and she felt normal.
"Come dear, let's go home." Mandy led her towards the exit.
Rahul was waiting by the car impatiently for Mandy and Ana to return. He was feeling guilty and wanted to reach out and say sorry to Ana. The thought of her being an orphan never crossed his mind, but still, he shouldn't have said those words. Thinking back, he clearly understood her actions at the orphanage and why she felt so strongly about the issues relating to orphans.
When Mandy returned with Ana, Rahul opened the door for them to get in. Rahul looked at Ana for a chance to say something, but she walked in with her head down and didn't even look at him. Mandy warned him with her eyes not to bother her and patted his hand to let him know Ana was okay.
Rahul also got into the car, but instead of sitting on the opposite side, he sat by Ana. Ana was still trying to digest Mandy's words of support and how it was going to impact her life and job. After few minutes she gave up and closed her eyes pushing her head against the head rest.
Rahul waited patiently till Ana closed her eyes and then turned sideways to get a good look at her. She was so close and tempting. He went over her beautiful face and features and felt tempted to put his hand around her and pull her into his lap. She looked so innocent and beautiful, that the urge to pull her into him and protect her felt very tempting. He controlled his urge, as his mom was right there and it wasn't the right time. She must be hating him for all the things he said to her.
After few minutes Rahul could feel Ana's weight, as she leaned on him in her sleep and let her head fall on his shoulder. Rahul shifted down to make sure she was comfortable. Just as they were exiting the highway, the driver braked suddenly and Ana grabbed Rahul's thigh to break the momentum. As she murmured sorry, she realized she was actually sleeping on him. They both looked at each other and looking at the smile on his face Ana's heart skipped a beat. She was happy he didn't push her away when she slept on him. After that incident, Rahul tried to get some alone time with Ana, to apologize, but Ana didn't give him a chance.
Ana felt much closer to Mandy after the incident and started sharing her childhood details little by little. It was three days after the incident, when Ana got a call from the daycare center informing her that Prince wasn't feeling well and she should pick him up as soon as possible.
Ana approached Mandy, "Mandy, prince is not feeling well, so can I leave early to pick him up, after I finish sending out these letters."
"Oh my poor baby! .. Ana! .. You should leave now. Those letters are not important and can be done later. Just go now and pick him up and let me know if you need a doctor and I will send one over to your place." She almost pushed her out by walking her out and making sure she got into the car.
"She is acting more like a mom rather than as a boss or employer." Ana thought as she got on her way to pick prince.
Ana picked up prince and took him home as he had light temperature and was feeling tired. She gave him some Tylenol and took a nap along with him.
Cynthia came home later in the evening and started playing with prince as he was feeling better. Ana woke up hearing the door bell ring and opened the door thinking it was Cynthia.
"Hey Ana, how is prince doing? I called your phone and it was going to your voice mail. So I came down to find out how both of you are doing?" Ana froze seeing Mandy on her doorstep and asking questions.
Meanwhile Cynthia and prince barged into the room laughing and chasing each other. Cynthia was playing hide and seek with prince.
Before Ana could recover and answer Mandy's questions, Mandy came inside and picked up prince. Prince recognized her, but tried to hide his face, overcome with shyness.
She carried him to the sofa and sat down with him on her lap.
"Sorry Mandy, I switched off the phone, so that it won't disturb prince. He seems to be ok now, gave him some Tylenol and made him take a nap. He is now back to his naughty self." Ana looked around uneasily, wondering what Mandy would think of the barely furnished apartment. Ana introduced Cynthia, her roommate and good friend to Mandy.
"Hi Mandy, Ana is very lucky to have you in her life. I am happy for her." Cynthia replied shaking Mandy's hand.
"I think both of you should move to the mansion, I can arrange transport for you Cynthia."
"I am moving to DC next month, to be with my fiancée, so probably Ana can move, as it is tough to handle prince by herself." She replied and excused herself to make some coffee for everyone.
"Ana you should move with me. I am not going to let you stay alone. I will arrange a nanny for prince. We have lot of room and prince will be able to run around freely." She made it sound like a order than a request.
"Sure Mandy, after Cynthia leaves, I will shift to mansion." Ana replied, scolding prince with her eyes, to not play with his ears.
"Sweetie, you shouldn't play with your ears" Mandy scolded prince playfully and kissed both his cheeks.
"I am trying to stop him, but he keeps on doing that," Ana said rolling her eyes in frustration.
"Rahul used to do the same when he was young and I had to struggle to get him off it. Even now, I catch him doing it sometimes." Looking at prince, she said again, "he reminds me of Rahul, when he was this age."
For a second, Ana was dumbstruck, unable to respond. She was lucky, Mandy wasn't looking at her, as her face turned red thinking if it might be true. Then her senses kicked in and she reminded herself that Rahul was out of her reach.
Mandy left after spending some time with prince. She wanted to ask Ana about prince's father, but restrained herself from prying too much into Ana's life. She was happy that Ana agreed to move to the mansion after Cynthia leaves for DC.
The next day Ana was working in one of the spare offices, trying to summarize budget numbers for Mandy. While she was struggling to balance the figures on the spreadsheet, Rahul walked in and sat in front of her.
She wondered why he was there, instead of any of the 30 plus rooms in the mansion. She also knew he was watching her, but she ignored him and kept her eyes on the laptop screen even though her brain stopped processing the numbers. She wanted him to go away, but a part of her wanted him to sit there and watch her forever.
Though prince brought happiness into her life, certain parts of her body craved for Rahul and yearn for the happiness that makes her heart melt. Finally after five minutes, she slowly lifted her eyes to see what he was doing, but he wasn't there. Her disappointment didn't last long as she felt his hands on the chair behind her.
Standing behind her chair, Rahul pressed her chair down with his hands and bent down, coming close to her face.
"You were right about the orphanage, I asked someone to do some background check and they indeed tried to inflate the numbers to get more money." Rahul started explaining the details of his investigation.
Ana could barely register his words. She was concentrating on his face and lip movements. He was so close that she was drowning in his masculine scent and the feeling to kiss him was overpowering her senses.
Rahul was barely an inch away from her lips and though he planned to end his long story with a 'sorry' for his earlier outburst, the temptation to kiss her drowned his reasoning, as he kept on closing the gap between their lips.
He was less than a millimeter away from her lips.
"Rahul where are you?" Ria's booming voice hit them.
