I swiped the tablet's screen with my finger while reading every article related to Shanshan. It was the only way I could do to have any updates about her.
From what I read, today was the burial of his father. I was hoping that she would be back after two or three days from now.
"Sir?" I heard a knock behind the office door.
"Come in," I answered, putting down the tablet and leaning forward on my table.
The lady staff entered, passing through the empty table of Shanshan.
"What is it?" I asked after the lady staff approached my desk.
"Director Kim needs the CEO's signature, but since she's not here, he's asking for your autograph instead." She handed me the file with a smile.
"Sure." I opened my drawer and took out my pen, then signed the paper without any hesitation. "There you go," I handed it back to her.
"Thank you, sir."
After she left, I put my pen back in the drawer. But then I noticed a folded paper inside, which I could not remember putting ithy6 there.
I picked it up and unfolded it. "A letter?"
Minho oppa,
I'm sorry for lying to you many times. Each time you asked if I was okay, my heart ached with sadness and distress. I wanted to tell you how much I am suffering, but I didn't want to add any stress and pressure. My secret that I had been hiding for the past months was something I was afraid to tell you. But I might regret not telling you before I die. I have been suffering from liver cancer for almost three months now, and on any day of this month, I will die.
Thank you so much for not leaving the gallery despite how many difficulties and challenges we faced to keep it running. Thank you for your support and for standing with me against my family.
After my death, I'm leaving the gallery to you. I had already made an arrangement with Lawyer Kang.
Please take good care of Lily and keep in touch with JK.
I wish I could spend more time with all of you.
- Lee Shanshan
I burst into tears. I felt like falling apart, not able to take it anymore. "So this was your secret?"
"Lee Shanshan, why... why are you doing this to us? WHY?!" I put my head between my hands and sobbed.
I couldn't believe it. Shanshan knew she was dying, and she kept it from us for months. "If only I knew it... if only..."
Just then, my cellphone started vibrating. I shakily took it in my hand without looking at it, afraid at first that it would be someone calling to inform me that Shanshan was dead.
I shakingly answered the call without daring to know who it was, but relief flooded over me when I heard Lily's voice.
"Min Ho..." She spoke with urgency, but at the same time, she was crying. "Min Ho, we need to stop Jungkook. He went into road rage on the highway!"
^^ AUTHOR ^^
Just after the doctor and his assistants got out of the hospital's VIP room, they were bombarded with questions from the reporters waiting outside. The guards tried their best to make sure no one barges inside while protecting the hospital staff.
"She is currently unconscious but miraculously maintaining a stable condition. We won't be entertaining any questions until she awakens."
With that, the doctors walked away, ignoring the reporters who were desperately trying to get a small piece of information from them.
Meanwhile, inside the room, Shanshan sat awake, which was the cause why the doctors came to check on her. They were ordered to tell the media the opposite thing. Mark and Shanshan knew that they had to lie to the reporters to let their enemies expect the wrong thing.
Shanshan wanted her brother to stay confident in his position while unaware that she was recovering. If he discovers that she is awake, he might make a plan to ruin her again and protect his place in the company.
"Your mom is still in the detention center. I made sure that she can't escape while your brother is making a plan to get her out." Mark reported as soon as the doctor left.
"I have many things to file against my stepmother, but I don't have enough evidence. But what happened three days ago is enough to keep her in prison," Shanshan sighed while looking at her fist, remembering that day when she almost ripped Monalyn apart.
"From now on, as long as I'm alive, your stepmother can't do anything," Mark stated.
"Thank you for that," Shanshan said in a low voice. She felt vulnerable after waking up, and she knew that already. But still, it was a miracle that she was alive. "And thank you for saving me."
"It's my promise to protect you." Mark smiled warmly, looking at her eyes with compassion. Shanshan was very grateful to him, but she could not tell him the right words, so she just hoped that Mark knew she meant every 'thank you' she said.
"How about my scroll?"
"Oh, your scroll. Your scroll is kept by your little brother."
"What?"
Just then, someone opened the door. Roger stepped inside with a backpack on his back, wearing a black suit. Obviously, that he came straight from their father's funeral.
Shanshan looked at Mark, questioning him with her eyes if they could trust him, and he answered with a nod.
"I'll leave the two of you," Mark decided to leave and made his way towards the door, patting Roger on the shoulder.
As soon as Mark left, the younger turned to Shanshan and spoke.
"Ji Hyo," he mumbled while approaching the bed where his stepsister sat. "Good thing you're awake."
"Can you at least call me noona once?" Shanshan said, watching him lay his bag on the edge of the bed and take something out.
"You don't know how I've been hiding your stuff with me while my stepbrother was desperately looking for it. I thought I would get killed if he found out that I had been hiding it from him, so I came to give it to you as much as want it quickly. I can't hide this thing anymore, especially when I see Roald getting mad about it."
"Why... why did you decide to keep it with you? Not Mark?" She asked with a frown, still hurt by him ignoring her request to call her noona. "Such a disrespectful kid."
"He won't ever think that I am keeping it, so we wanted him to divert his suspicion on Mark while the file is safe in my hands."
He handed her the scroll, and she took it with her hand that had an IV fluid attached to it. Shanshan gripped the scroll firmly.
"Thank goodness it's still safe."
Roger gulped and waited with anticipation, expecting his sister to open it. He was curious about what was inside.
"Tch," she smirked at him when she caught him looking at the scroll.
"W-why are you not opening it?" The young lad asked with disappointment.
"You're not allowed to see it. Turn around." She commanded, which he immediately did, surprising her. "You seem to change after a few years, hm?" She teased. During the last time she saw him, he was a menace and a stubborn kid, not wanting to obey simple instructions.
"Shut up. I'm just curious about what's inside."
She made a soft grin. "By the way, I'm a bit confused... surprised, rather. I never expected this, but why are you on my side?"
Roger lowered his head and kept silent.
Shanshan waited for a while for him to respond.
"Why are you not answering? Your silence is making me suspicious," she said, trying to force her stepbrother to speak.
"Because I... I realize that I don't like business too. I wanted to travel the world like you. I just found out that I have..." he paused, feeling shy to open up.
"That you have what?" Shanshan lifted her eyebrow, his back still facing her. Although she couldn't see his face, she knew that he felt embarrassed to tell her.
"I have an interest in arts, noona." He ended, making her gasp.
Well, arts was never appreciated within the Lee family. When they were young, they were all expected to take business courses, that it was difficult for Shanshan at first to tell her dad that she wanted to take a different path. The older sister understood well how her younger stepbrother felt.
"O my gosh, does your mom know about it?"
He turned to her quickly and put his finger on his nose with fear. "Don't ever tell anyone!"
Shanshan chuckled. "I have your mom in jail. Don't worry."
"I know." He turned his back again.
"Aren't you mad at me? For putting her to jail...?"
"She deserves it. She killed your dad."
Silence fell between the two. Shanshan just bit her lip while the boy stayed silent in his seat. It was a bit awkward between them. Mona killed her father, but she was here talking with her son, reminding her of her relationship with JK. She had been friends with Jungkook, whose father was almost killed by her dad. To summarize, it was their parents who had done wrong, but their children took their faults and suffered hardships from it. But it was a good thing that they overcame those things.
Suddenly, Roger cleared his throat, breaking the silence in the room. "Aren't you going to open the scroll already?"
"Oh-yeah. I'm going to take out the file now," she said, gripping on the middle of the scroll to open it with her fingerprints.
