Chapter 17- Nothing Like Us
I sat cross-legged in my seat as I read the article from my tablet. BTS was already in Spain, preparing for their concert. I sighed, looking at Jungkook's photo in the screen. "I guess he hates me now."
I looked to my window as I heard the announcement inside the airplane. We are now ready to land.
As I walked out of the airport, two men in black suits came to me. "Madam Lee? We are escorting you to the mansion."
"Fine." I gave him my luggage. "Lead me to the car."
The two men led me to a fancy car, with another four men standing to greet me. "What's with the many bodyguards?!" I turned at them annoyingly.
"Sir Lee wanted to make sure that you arrive home safely." The main guard spoke as he opened the door for me.
I went inside, while the other four went to another car. I just smirked. "He just wanted to make sure that I won't be able to run away."
"Bring me straight to the restaurant," I ordered.
"But Ma'am, Madam Mona wants you to get you dressed before showing up at the dinner."
"I'm late already. You don't want my parents to be waiting, do you?"
^^. . .^^
I arrived at the private room where I was to meet my parents and my fiance's family.
"Oh! My daughter, she's here already," Mona stood up from the table as she acknowledged my arrival.
I ignored her and continued to make my way towards them as my eye caught the presence of a handsome New York man whom I presume as the one they want me to marry, together with his parents. They seem to be good people, but making business partnerships with my parents made me doubt their real intentions.
When I stopped, my heart seemed to tighten when I saw my father. Bitterness was what I felt."Traitor .."
I could feel my stepmother's disgust while she looked at me up and down. She knew I didn't dressed up for the event. It was my first step to rebellion.
"My daughter came straight from Korea. She said she's eager to meet you that she didn't mind preparing herself," she said, pretending to fix my hair and straighten my clothes.
The other family beamed at me and nodded. "So she's Lee Ji Hyo, your first daughter." The father said, while examining me.
My father nodded proudly. "Ji Hyo, this is Mark and these are his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Torres..."
As my father continued to introduce them, I stared blankly at the person called Mark. He was smiling, but I doubted if he was pleasant to meet me or has some hidden agenda behind our marriage. His stare was warm and had a manly smile.
"Your daughter is so beautiful. I'm sure she will make a great wife," Mark commented. He intentionally looked at me and greeted, "Hi."
The way he said it with his deep voice shook something inside me. Yes he looked great and charming, yet this should not distract me from my real reason for coming here.
I made an empty smile before replying bluntly. "Hi."
"T-that's all?" Mark chuckled as the situation got awkward.
Before I could utter a word, Monalyn overtook me.
"Maybe she's tired from the flight. You must be hungry, darling. Come and join us. Everybody, let's eat." She invited.
They nodded and began to settle for their seats but I didn't move.
"We can eat first and then later on, we can leave you with Mark so you can have a private time together-"
"Cut it off," I spoke, making her stop and look at me with surprise.
Mona stood, feeling embarrassed. My father turned to me, speechless.
She stood up and lightly caressed my shoulder. "What's wrong, Ji Hyo?"
I moved my shoulder where she placed my hand and moved away from her. "Stop calling me Ji Hyo, Monalyn."
"H-how can you call your mother like that?!" She choked, her reaction making me smirk.
"Mother?!" I made a breathy chuckle. "You were never a mother to me! You never treated me like a daughter either!"
"Ji Hyo!" My father stood up, defending his wife. "Stop talking to your mother like that! Apologize to her right now."
"Why would I apologize to her when I was right? She mistreated me a lot yet you always took her side each time I complain to you! Not once did you ever listen to me!"
"Ji Hyo-ah, that's not-"
Someone cleared his throat. We all turned to Mr. Torres. "May I know what's happening?"
I faced the other family, my fist clenching the bottom of my sling bag. "I'm sorry, but I don't have any interest in marrying your son."
I eyed at my dad before continuing. " I don't want to get involved in my family's business either."
"Ji Hyo!" My father bolted.
I checked on the Torres family. They sat still as they witnessed the drama happening between our family. They were speechless, surprised rather, while Monalyn was fuming red with anger and embarrassment.
"You think I came because I was afraid of you? I came to announce that I am officially leaving this family. Do not ever look for me nor force me to come back..." Before Monalyn could open her mouth to speak, I lifted a finger on her face. "And you... your tricks will never work on me! Because once you try to threaten me, I will expose my father and everything he tried to build in the first place will be ruined."
"What did you say?!" My father tilted his head with shock.
"You're going to expose your own father? What nonsense!" Monalyn scoffed.
Securing my bag over my shoulder, I stepped up to her and glared at her firmly. "I'm not afraid of the consequences. You should be the one to feel frightened. Because you're just a leech sucking on my father's wealth. If he's gone, you will be left pitiful."
I smirked. Before she could raise a hand on me, I was already turning to leave.
"Lee Ji Hyo! Wait!! Don't do this! LEE JI HYO!!" My Dad chased me until the hallway. When he captured my arm did I only stopped in my tracks. "You knew... you knew it all along?!"
Slowly facing him, I couldn't stop the hatred I felt when I met his eyes. "Why Dad.... why did you go that far?! You are a coward who could not ask for forgiveness and ran away from them instead! Why did you have to betray Jungkook's family and even harm.his father?!"
"You don't understand!! It was all for you!"
"No! It wasn't right!! You knew how much I loved Jungkook! He is like my brother! You knew how close our bond is since we were kids!!! Why did you have to pull me away from him?!" I was lashing out, at the same time tears were rolling out from my eyes as I shouted.
"I see.... you still haven't forgotten about him. But you still don't get it. I did this for your future! I wanted you to have a great life as your dead mother wished!"
"BUT THIS IS NOT WHAT I WANTED! She never said you have to steal money and drag me away from the people I loved most! And yet here you are, standing straight like a virtuous man with no conscience at all!" I put my palm against my eyes and sobbed, my head bowed in front of my father while my shoulders trembled.
He was stupid. Everything would have been great ten years ago if he never made a selfish and evil choice. If he loved my mother so much, then he would have considered his daughter's feelings too. Everything was ruined since my mother's death.
I lifted my head, my mouth quivering with the last words I said, "Even if the Jeon family has forgiven you already, but I will never forgive you for what you did! Stay here. Live your life as a successful businessman and I will go back to my mother's home. I will no longer be your daughter and this will be the last time I will be calling you 'dad'."
Wiping my cheek, I gave him one last glance and turned my heels. I felt him watching me leave, stunned with the strong spirit I had. A very, very heavy weight was lifted off me as I walked away. I felt relief. I felt happy. And for the very first time, I felt free.
I entered the car smiling. After a satisfied sigh, I leaned back in my seat. "To the airport please. I have a concert to attend. Quick!"
^^. . .^^
I've never been to any big concerts before. I felt so excited as I looked around the Camp Nou stadium, the building getting filled by fans. Once again, I feel awed by how big BTS is.
As I had promised JK, I would go to their concert. I knew we were not on good terms right now, but that won't keep me from attending the event. As he said, a promise is meant to be kept. I need to make up for the promises I didn't fulfill.
I sighed as I thought about the things that happened. I cut ties with my family, but I have no regrets. I am more than happy to not see them again and start living with my new name freely as Lee Shanshan.
As I was carried away by my thoughts, I didn't notice that the event already started.
"Make some noise, Spain!!"
The boys just got off the lift and they were walking aesthetically walking closer towards the fans, in the VIP section.
"They all look stunning. Suga! RM, J-hope and Jin... oh the maknaes! Jimin, V, and my JK!"
I felt proud.
Goosebumps and tingles rushed over my body as the audience roared with excitement. The seven members started to perform, loud music synergizing with the energy of the fans. I moved to the beat of music as I focused more on Jungkook, him dancing and singing on the frontline among his hyungs like the main character he was.
It was my first time to see my best friend perform on stage. He was amazing. BTS was amazing.
The concert proceeded smoothly, leaving everyone ecstatic. I felt overwhelmed, but I decided to be calm. I'm happy enough just by seeing Jungkook perform on stage, the issue regarding my family being forgotten for a while. I continued to watch as he ascended on stage to perform his solo song. But before that, he made a short speech.
"Army, I am thankful for all the years you have been supporting our band. As you all know, I have been open to you about this past best friend. I wrote two songs dedicated to her. Some of you were upset because of what she did. I felt upset too, but we shouldn't let hatred stay long in us. Today I want to happily share this news with you. I met that best friend again, and I learned how to forgive her."
"Awww~," The audience answered. "We are happy for you!"
"We are both bonding well and I am thankful that she is back in my life. Please give us your support!"
As if knowing beforehand that I came, he turned in my direction and caught my eyes. "Ji Hyo-ah, this song is for you."
I froze. "How did he know my spot?"
He started singing, his tear- filled eyes focused on me.
"Lately I've been thinking, thinking 'bout what we had
I know it was hard, it was all that we knew, yeah
Have you been drinking to take all the pain away?
I wish that I could give you what you deserve
Cause nothing can ever, ever replace you
Nothing can make me feel like you do
You know there's no one, I can relate to
And know we won't find a love that's so true
There's nothing like us, there's nothing like you and me
Together through the storm
There's nothing like us, there's nothing like you and me
Together..."
I felt warmth and a moment of relief. He forgives me... he needs me.
"I gave you everything, baby, everything I had to give
Girl, why would you push me away? yeah
Lost in confusion, like an illusion
You know I'm used to making your day
But that is the past now, we didn't last now
I guess that this is meant to be, yeah
Tell me was it worth it? We were so perfect
But baby I just want you to see
There's nothing like us, there's nothing like you and me
Together through the storm
There's nothing like us, there's nothing like you and me
Together
There's nothing like us, there's nothing like you and me
Together through the storm
There's nothing like us, there's nothing like you and me
Together"
As the song nears its end, he pointed at me and gave a smile. I blushed hard after the camera pointed towards me as my face was shown on the stage monitors. Within seconds, I heard snaps around me. I was surrounded with phones. I struggled to look at my best friend on stage while guards rushed their way to me.
Jungkook was not planning to hide our friendship. He was proud to let army know about me. The other monitor displayed his smiling face and his glittering eyes looking in my direction. His proud expression erased my fear.
We both locked eyes and giggled, tears rolling down our cheeks.
