Sam's family moved into their new house 2 weeks before Sam's 10th birthday so when it was getting even closer to his celebration, his father asked him 'What would you like to get for your birthday this year, son?'. 'I don't know, surprise me' was Sam's honest answer. 'Ok, I'll think about something Really fun!' Martin promised him & smiled... And he kept his promise. Cause Sam didn't expect to get a present like this... But it turned out that he got something Better than he Could Expect!... He got a Friend!
He didn't invite any friends to his birthday party because he didn't have any new friends yet, he's just started a new school & was still too shy to make friends with kids in his new class. He needed some more time for that so he decided to celebrate his birthday with his parents only. That was enough for him because he liked their company. And they were doing their best to make That Day special for him. They let him stay up later than usual in the evening - & in the afternoon they all started to celebrate. 'My little boy is turning 10 !' said Patricia carrying Sam's birthday cake with 10 candles on into the living room.
'Make a wish, son' said Martin when Sam's cake was already on the table right in front of them. 'The only thing I want... Is a New Friend!' Sam thought aloud & blew all the candles out. His both parents clapped their hands & sang 'Happy Birthday' for him & then it was time to give him a present... So Martin & Patricia went out of the room & came back carrying something big & nicely packed together. 'Wow!' - It's the Biggest Present I've Ever Had!' called Sam happily 'What is it?'. 'Check yourself' answered Martin when he & his wife put his son's present on the sofa.
Sam unpacked the ribbon and the gift wrap instantly and noticed that his this year's present was...
'A trunk?' said Sam with a surprised face. 'Yes, but there is also something inside' said Martin'. 'What is it'? asked Sam with a smile. 'Open it & you will see' Martin encouraged him then looked at his wife & they smiled at each other. Sam opened the trunk carefully & inside it there was a ventriloquist dummy boy with short blonde hair, blue eyes and a nice smile on his cute angellike face. He was dressed in blue jeans, green turtleneck and had trainers on his feet.
Sam took the dummy out of the trunk & looked at it holding it in front of him with his arms straightened and said 'Ok, dad... You really Surprised Me this year!'. Martin just smiled and nodded slightly and Sam continued 'I'm a Boy! I don't play with Dolls!... - So why did you buy me A Doll?'. 'It's not a doll, son - it's a Dummy' Martin corrected him. 'A dummy?' asked Sam. 'Yes, dear! - It's a Dummy' - confirmed his mother. 'And what's the difference?' was Sam's question. 'A dummy is much more fun & good for both boys & girls. Many best known ventriloquists were Men - & nobody was surprised about that' answered Martin. 'What's a ventriloquist?' asked Sam. 'It's a person who can talk without moving his lips & performs with a dummy to entertain people' Patricia explained. 'Sounds really cool - but I'm not a ventriloquist' was Sam's answer. 'Not yet - but you may try to learn it if you want to' said his mother & handed him a book entitled 'How to be a ventriloquist' saying 'This book is from me'.
Sam put his new dummy on the sofa and took a ventriloquist tutorial book from his mother saying 'Alright... - It all makes sense now & I think it can be fun!'. 'You think so?' asked Martin smiling at him. 'Sure I do! - Thanks Mom! Thanks Dad!' answered Sam happily & hugged his both parents at once standing between them & smiling wide. Then he looked at his dummy again & asked them 'How should I call him?'. 'It's your dummy - you decide' answered Martin smiling wide. They all looked at Sam's new dummy & Sam asked 'What is he holding?' because he noticed that the dummy boy was hiding something in his left fist. 'I don't know' said Patricia 'And that's funny... I was sure that his both hands were open a moment ago & he wasn't holding anything in his Fist!' she said thoughtfully. 'I thought so too' answered her husband - 'But I guess we should check it'...
Martin tried to open the dummy boy's fist - but it was closed too firmly & he didn't manage. As if the dummy didn't want to let him...
When he was trying, the dummy's eyes slightly moved and looked at Sam, but the little fist still didn't open, so Martin told his son 'I can't do that!... This is your dummy - so maybe you try?'. 'Sure, dad' answered Sam. He looked at his new dummy and asked 'Open your fist, please' - & something unbelievable happened!... The little dummy's smile widened hardly noticeably and his hand opened very slowly. A piece of paper fell out of it dropped on the floor. Patricia opened her eyes wide & asked Sam 'How did you do that, son?'. 'That's easy, mom. You always teach me that it's better to be polite than to use force - & seems that it worked now' answered Sam. He picked up the piece of paper from the floor & noticed 'Hey! - There is something written here!'. He read it aloud. The message was saying: 'MY NAME IS TIMMY - & I'M YOUR BEST FRIEND FOREVER'.
'Timmy? - That's nice!' said Patricia. 'So seems that your new dummy already Has a name' said Martin. Sam answered 'Yes, seems that it's Timmy - & I like it'. He shook his new dummy's hand saying 'Nice to meet you, Timmy! - I'm Sam'. He got surprised because he felt as if his dummy's hand moved too... Just as if he was shaking a hand of a living person!... But that was impossible! - It was just a Dummy, right?... His parents saw his strange face expression & Martin asked 'What happened, son?' 'N-n-nothing, dad! Everything's fine!' answered Sam & carried his birthday present into his room upstairs.
