TW: verbal argument, domestic abuse, possible mentions of blood
15 years ago~
Somewhere in Ontario, Canada, 1996
"Ready to see your new baby brother?" The father asked his, now, eldest son who was only three. The small dirty blonde child smiled wide and nodded enthusiastically, his mop hair flying around with the movement. "Ready! Ready! Ready!"
The toddler chanted as he hopped forward, holding tightly onto his father's calloused and lightly scared hand from numerous deep paper cuts, that came with working in real estate. The father chuckled at his son's excitement. Leading the boy into the hospital room, a few nurses watch machines that beeped consistently at a loud volume. Sure, it caught the child's attention, but when he heard a baby's whining, his focus was diverted.
Laying on his mother's bare chest, was his new baby brother. The newborn was wrapped in a soft blue stripped blanket, with a small beanie surrounding his dark brown hair. His eyes were half closed, but you can still just barely see the warm brown iris.
The three-year old started up at his incredible mother with awe, and extended his arms to signal that he wanted to join her. The mother was tired from pushing the baby out, so she laughed lightly, still hazy from her epidural. The father lifted the boy up onto the hospital bed, and he crawled forward to give his mom a quick small hug and kiss on the cheek. "Momma?"
"Hi baby... do you want to meet your brother?" The boy, now suddenly nervous, slowly nodded. The parents looked at each other with a smile at their son's reaction to the infant. He was pulled to sit back on a chair, close enough to the bed so mother could see, with pillows for support behind his back, arms, and his lap.
Father picked up the baby, ready to place him in his big brother's awaiting anxious arms, but a knock at the door halted them. Looking over and watching as dad's mother walked in, a small Polaroid camera in her slightly shriveled hands. She wore a smile on her lips, and had a blue gift bag hanging off her inner right elbow. "Seems I've arrived right on time."
Grandma gestured to continue with the first meeting of the new brothers, as she moved to place the gift bag down on any open counter space, which was tough with all the medical equipment and other gifts that were given by family and even some nurses. The father chuckled at his mother, "Of course ma."
"It's great seeing you, Evelyn. Thank you for coming." The new mother of two welcomed her mom-in-law. "And you, my dear. Hope the birth went well. Did you get the epidural?"
The two women made small talk as the father walked over to eldest son, the youngest lying half-asleep in his arms. "Now, be careful son. He's going night-night right now. Be soft with him, okay?"
The father wanted his boy to be extra gentle with the baby. Wanting an almost verbal confirmation that he'll be ginger with him, not wanting him to squeeze him like a stuffed animal full of cotton. But more like an egg. The boy nodded with a small positive hum, his deep green eyes wide, body almost shaking with nerves.
The dad laughed lightly at how he was practically shivering with anticipation. He carefully laid the infant into the toddlers hands. After hearing the smaller boy start to cry at the new contact, it startled the bigger boy, causing water to form in his forest eyes, and snot slowly begin to exit from his nose. He looked up, with teary eyes, to his father when he spoke.
"William, meet your baby brother, Benjamin."
Flash-!
2 years later~
Somewhere else in Ontario, Canada, 1998 in August
"Come with me Bemji! We need to stop the bad guys from apacking the city!" William, now five with a small pronunciation issue, ran around with his little brother, Benjamin, now two. Both boys wore their now sweaty and definitely over-worn pajamas under their hand-sewn capes. They were playing superheroes.
"Zooooooommm! Vroooooommm!"
They would yell out as they ran around the house or yard.
"Pow pow pow! Take tat evil guy!"
They would battle invisible monsters only they can see.
"Bang! Bang! Bam!"
They would shoot imaginary guns at colored papers that showed off their drawings of criminals, which were taped to any wall they could reach.
Their grandmother, who sat on her recline-able chair, laughed as she watched and sewed the boy's new winter gear. She was taking care of them while their parents were out at work. Father was at the real estate firm, and mother is a third grade teacher for a neighboring town.
When Benjamin was first born, William did not like him. Maybe even hated him. Mainly because Ben was loud and cried a lot, which made Bill cry at the loud noise, but also because he couldn't play with his brother yet. The poor baby couldn't talk, nonetheless walk or really move around on his own, so the negative emotions his big brother felt towards him, wasn't even his fault. Benny just wasn't old enough yet.
After two years of sharing the same room, the boys slowly started to bond some more. Now that Ben can crawl and walk around by himself, he just tended to follow his big brother, to the point that it annoyed Will. One time, Will got so mad that Ben trailed after him all day, not missing a single second without him, that he yelled at his brother. "Can you stop fowowing me? It's amoying! Stop it!"
Ben cried at his volume more than his words and tone, but Will immediately felt guilt and apologized, giving him a hug. It didn't take long for the crying to stop.
Their mother had watched the interaction from the couch and was going to step in at Benny's cries, but had stopped when Billy had taken control of the situation. Sure she still had a small talk with him about it later, "He just looks up to you, since your his big brother," but was still proud of how quickly he changed his attitude after the conflict.
It wasn't long after that they were playing again. They were the best of buds, always together and never leaving each other's side for long.
Unfortunately, this happiness started to go down hill. Not only were his parents slowly start to argument maybe every few days but what was really important, was that William started to become aware of the word, "school" as it was spoken by his parents more often as summer was coming to a close and the coolness of fall was on the horizon.
He, along with his brother, were taken to a local discount store in their town, so his parents can shop for not only groceries, but for this "school" thing. The first semester was just around the corner and apparently he needed supplies for it, battle gear he imagined.
He was allowed to pick out a super cool backpack, a matching lunch box, a binder, and a new water bottle. He even got some new clothes! And some other boring stuff like pencils, coloring paper, and this packet of blank lined paper?
The poor boy was very confused.
Where's the metal armor? The steel weapons? What about his brother? Why was he the only one getting this stuff?
That night, his mother went over what school is, "a place where you can learn with kids your age. Its what momma does for work" and what the new day by day routine will be, "dad will take you to school every morning, and pick you up afterwards."
He was so mad when he learned that Benny would get to stay with grandma all day without him, and he had to wake up early to go with his father to the primary school in his neighborhood. He was mad he had to be without his brother for five to six hours. Hours! They can barely do minutes!
Looking back now, it was probably for the best. The only time they were apart was during potty training, and just potty time in general.
That night, William spent all the time he could with his little brother, feeling as though he was being sent out for war, and there was little chance he'd come back from it. He felt as though he was being sent away for being a bad brother, so he did all he could for the toddler, hoping to change his parent's mind.
Which didn't work.
The next morning was full of screams and cries from both brothers. Both parents picked a child and literally pulled the two apart, as they shared a death grip of a hug. Dad pulled off his screaming child and Mom cradled a kicking toddler. Grandma was called as Will was being placed into his car seat in his father's station wagon, wet tears and snot trailing down his face. His mother walked back out, Benny wrapped tightly in his favorite blue stripped blanket in her arms, but carried Will's Pokemon backpack, that could attach to his similarly themed lunch box, in her hands.
The five minute ride to the school was quiet besides some sniffles here and there. The boy had sat with his arms crossed as he glared out the window to passing cars and trees. When they arrived, his dad got out with him and walked towards the office. But was stopped by the pull of his arm.
Looking down on his sad child, dad gave him a comforting smile and dropped down to his eye level. "What's wrong, Wilbur?"
Will sniffed as he stared up at his father. "I don't wama go without Bemji..."
"Oh bud... he's not here because he's not old enough. But it's okay. You will see him after you finish school today. You are going to meet so many other kids your age, and maybe even make some friends. I promise you will have some fun here." The boy's green orbs widen at the word, "And you get to learn about so many things! I want you to learn so much, become so smart, that me and momma won't be able to catch up to you. But you have to listen, okay? I want you to tell me everything you learn when I come get you later okay?" He gave as many comforting and positive and motivating words as possible to his son. Genuinely wanting him to be happy for the next however many years of schooling. He really wanted his kid to socialize with others his age, ones who don't live with him. Get into some sports since he is a very active boy.
"Can you do that for me?" He asked, and expected a 'no', but received a hesitant nod 'yes'. Giving the boy a proud smile and tight hug, he stood back up and continued into the school.
Sure, he absolutely hated school with a passion, but when William realized that he would be able to see his brother soon, he cheered and wished time would move faster. He didnt really talk to any other kids, only when he needed to, or when he was talked to.
When he was picked up, he was bouncing with excitement to see his baby brother again. Father laughed at the action. "Did you have a fun day? Tell me what you learned today."
Will talked the whole ride back and even continued the conversation to the front door, he only stopped when he heard his brother scream his name, "Liwum!!"
"Bemji!" They ran into each other's arms, incredibly happy to be together again.
And they fought hard to stay together, even after more arguments between their parents. When William started his third year of primary school, the fighting turned violent. Mother had slapped father. Hard. He was bruised for weeks.
That was the last straw.
They got divorced and father got the custody of his kids after a debate of separating them or leaving them with their violent mother. She had won the house, however, so father and the boys moved in with their grandma, in a different town more south in Ontario, only a few hours from the border into the United States. A town, called White Chapel. Grandma owned a beautiful two-story, five bedroom, three bath house that contained a spacious office for their father, and had a basement and attic.
Grandma claimed the basement that she had re-vamped before their arrival, which she forbade the kids from entering. Father got the office, while the boys claimed the attic, turning it to a somewhat man cave. Filled with random movie posters, some neon signs, a comfortable sofa, a mini fridge, gaming consoles, and bean bags chairs. The attic had become the boys favorite place to be in the house, besides their separate and next door bedrooms.
Starting a new school was hard, at first. However both boys quickly made friends with classmates. Benny had meet their neighbor's son, Ethan Morgan, while Billy had met his best friend, Noah Brown.
The brothers slowly started having more time for apart, as the other would almost always be spending time with their new friend. It didn't really hurt their bond, but it definitely affected it in some way. Will got more involved in sports, like American football, and even track. (He really liked running around) But Benny got more into video games, and science and chemistry and technology. Liam slowly became a jock while Ben became a geek.
Now the brothers, who used to do everything together, were barely alike outside of blood relation.
Sure they still spent time together, since Mr and Mrs Morgan used to ask Will to babysit Ethan, his kid sister Jane, and his own brother as he was the eldest teen they knew (and the most responsible) while they were out of the house, even inviting the brothers to meals after school. Of course, he stopped babysitting when he joined the high school's football team and was too busy to watch them any more. They soon decided Ethan was old enough to watch over his younger sister.
Until he couldn't...
