Chapter 43| Nanu's Love story
Nanu chatted happily with Sana. Mostly she was enquiring about her. At one point when Nanu inquired about Sana's cooking skills, she doubted if Nanu was trying to set her up with someone.
'What are your thoughts on marriage? When are you planning to marry?' She asked.
Sana shifted uncomfortably while Nanu looked back interestedly at her.
'I- uh- am- not planning marriage now.' She said
'Why?'
Sana blinked at Nanu. She opened her mouth, but no words came out.
'Nanu, why are you boring Sana? Come here.' Daanish called from inside and Sana was relieved.
'Coming, Sona.'
'Nanu.' Daanish whined.
Nanu picked up her cup of tea and few biscuits and hurried into the room. Sana watched her disappear into the room and exhaled loudly.
Thank God – Sana shook her head. Few more moments of inquiring about Sana, she was positive Nanu would have presented an alliance for her.
Sana admired the lighting on the wall opposite the dining table, a while later she carried her tea-cup and stood by the window. She enjoyed the view as she sipped the tea. She heard laughter from inside and smiled too. She didn't want to disturb the grandmother-grandson quality time and hence stayed in the living room.

After being done with tea, Sana placed it on the tray and walked towards the room. She found Daanish leaning against the bedpost and Nanu beside him, her back faced Sana. Sana moved her hand and knocked on the door with her knuckles. They looked at her and she entered.
'Are you done with tea. Nanu?' She asked. Nanu nodded and handed her the teacup. Sana took it and was about to leave when Nanu held her hand.
'Sana is such a sweet girl. Daanish,' – She looked at her grandson and he nodded, - 'Don't you think she and Ramiz will make an excellent pair?' She asked.
Sana's eyes widened – Shit!
Daanish shifted uncomfortably in his place and shrugged, - 'No, Nanu. Ramiz is a hair-dresser. Matlab, seriously? Sana deserves a decent guy with some "real" job.' Daanish said air-quoting real. Sana looked gratefully at him while Nanu looked offended.
'Arey, so what? Don't hairdressers get married?' She argued.
Sana recollected Saba calling Ramiz a barber and mentally decided to not marry him at any cost. She looked down and faked a smile.
'Nanu. I have nothing against Ramiz, but I am not ready to marry now.' She said
'But for how long?' Nanu was persistent.
Abey yaar – Sana mentally rolled her eyes.
'Someday, Nanu but not now.' Sana tried sounding polite. Nanu looked disappointed. Sana hated that look but she couldn't help it.
Sana placed the dirty cups on the tray along with the empty half plate and carried it to the kitchen. She placed them next to the sink and picked up the apron again. She tied it and opened the tap. She washed the dirty cups and soup bowl and placed them neatly on the rack. She wiped her palms on her apron and turned around. She dashed into someone and gasped.
'Daanish.'
'Sorry.'
Sana looked at him and found him standing with the support of the crutch. She placed her hands on her hips and tilted her head.
'Why are you doing out of bed? Didn't doctor said bed-rest.' She sounded stern. Daanish rolled his eyes.
'I am not that hurt.' He stated, and Sana rolled her eyes. She folded her arms, but her posture relaxed when he looked seriously at her.
'I am really embarrassed because of Nanu.' – He placed his palm over his chest, - 'I apologize on her behalf.' He said cutely.
Aww – Sana thought inwardly but outwardly she shook her head.
'No. It is okay.' Sana said sincerely. Daanish had an apologetic look on his face and to make him stop looking at her, Sana held his free arm.
'Come you need rest. And where is Nanu?' Sana asked.
'Bathroom.' – He paused, - 'Honestly, let her be there.' Daanish joked as they walked towards the bedroom. Sana chuckled and Daanish smiled while looking at her. Sana clutched his free arm tightly and helped him walk to the room. She removed the crutch from his arm and helped him sit. Daanish groaned stretching his leg. She pulled the duvet up to his stomach. She felt his gaze on her as she moved her hands behind him adjusting his pillow. He leaned forward as she made the pillow stand. They looked at each other as Sana held his shoulder and made him lean back. She smiled little at him.
'I will go arrange dinner.' She said. Daanish blinked and nodded. Then Sana stepped out and walked out of the room.
*******************************
Sana ordered Chinese and did some time pass in Daanish's room listening to Nanu talk about her good old days. Sana was surprised to know that Nanu urf Waheeda had a love marriage and in her days, it was a very tough task. No one from Daanish's paternal side knew about this as they were strictly against love marriages.
'I was quite a rebel in my days. I always used to sneak from my mother's gaze. I hated cooking and other home chores. One day, as always, I was on the farm when I saw Daanish's grandfather. I liked him instantly. Soon, I started coming to the farm at the same time every day just to see him. Many times, I caught him looking at me. I observed his body language and one day I went and proposed to him.'
'You proposed him?' Sana asked, wide-eyed. She was amazed by the revelation. Nanu blushed and nodded. Daanish looked on with pride.
'Then?' Sana shifted excitedly.
Nanu nodded and continued. 'At first, he pretended to be innocent and clueless. Then, when I threatened to go to his family, he accepted that he loves me. I asked him to send his family members to my place. He did. They liked me. And we got married.' Nanu finished. Sana kept looking at her in awe. Nanu wasn't just a happy and warm woman she was also badass.
But before Sana could ask anything further the sound of the door-bell disturbed her. Both Daanish and Sana groaned while Nanu grinned.
Sana got the door. It was home delivery from a Chinese restaurant.
'One veg, and two chicken Hakka noodles.' The delivery boy said. Sana checked with the receipt and nodded. Sana paid him, and the delivery boy smiled at her. She smiled back. Then he left, and Sana closed the door.
'Dinner.' She called and turned around. She was surprised to see Nanu and Daanish walk into the living room.
'Daanish, why are you walking?' Sana said tilting her head. Nanu looked at Daanish. She nodded.
'I told him the same thing. But Daanish doesn't listen.' Nanu complained cutely.
'Girls stop behaving like I have a broken leg.' Daanish said limping towards the dining table. Nanu and Sana glanced at each other. They shook their heads.
Daanish sighed sitting at the dining table and removed the crutch. He turned around placing his arm behind the chair. 'Come on plate dinner. I am starving.' He said.
'Coming.' Sana huffed. Nanu suppressed her smile.
Sana got the plates. Daanish was a happy man knowing he has veg noodles. Nanu and Sana glanced at each other. Soon, everyone began their dinner. As they laughed and talked over food Sana felt like a family.
This is how a happy family must feel like – Sana thought with a smile. She admired Daanish and Nanu's nok jhok for a moment before continuing to eat.
