Chapter 23| The Engagement
Misha stopped by the swing and excitedly pointed towards it. Daanish smiled at her. At first, Sana was looking at Misha but now her gaze was fixed on Daanish. He looked stunning in white tuxedo. The Black bow-tie complementing the tux very well. He had gelled his brown hair and neatly combed it.
'Hey, Sana!' Misha's chirpy voice broke Sana's trance. She shook her head. Daanish looked at her as well and she smiled at him. Misha hurried towards her and stood right in front.
'How am I looking?' She asked holding the edge of her frock. Sana leaned and kissed her cheek.
'Very beautiful.' She complimented the little girl and Misha blushed.
She then looked at Daanish and said happily, - 'Mamu (Maternal Uncle), she is Sana. She designed a beautiful dress for Khala (Maternal Aunt) and has promised she will make one for me too.'
Sana felt her cheek burn and her chest fill with pride when Misha complimented her in front of Daanish.
'Impressive, Sana.' Daanish complimented her as well. Sana blushed harder while nodding her head. Misha then got diverted by the swing. Sana watched Daanish play with Misha and she smiled dreamily.
Wow, he is so good with kids. *Sigh* He will make a perfect father of our kids – Sana thought dreamily. A silly grin appeared on her face.
'Sana.'
She quickly fixed her expressions and turned her head to the voice. Nanu walked up to her. She was accompanied by her "girl gang." She smiled warmly at Sana and she smiled back. Nanu then looked at her girls, - 'She is Sana,' – Nanu placed her palm on her shoulder, - 'She is Alishba's friend and works as a fashion designer in London. She has also designed the engagement dress for Alishba.' She said with pride. Sana humbly nodded as the ladies looked at her, impressed. They complimented her.
But one middle-aged woman with evil looking eyebrow didn't seem interested. Sana noted her but chose to ignore her.
The woman shifted closer and said, her voice cocky, - 'I have heard fashion designers are mostly gay? Are you gay too?' She made a disgusted face.
Sana's eyes widened on her comment and the other women gasped. Nanu shook her head and was about to say when someone interrupted them.
'Come on, Deena Chachi stop stereotyping everyone.' Daanish said as he stood next to Sana. He was with Misha by the swing next to the ladies and he overheard everything. Sana looked gratefully at him. He smiled at her and then looked at the woman again.
'By the way, if I am not wrong your son Sajid, recently he openly confessed he is gay.' Daanish said and the woman shifted, Sana was surprised by the revelation. Much to the woman's bad luck, Daanish added, - 'and he is an engineer.'
The woman pressed her lips tightly and exhaled deeply, - 'My husband is calling me. I should be going.' She said and turned around. Sana suppressed her smile, but the other ladies didn't bother, and they burst out laughing. Nanu complimented Daanish and patted his shoulder. He smiled widely at his grandmother.
After the laughter had died out, Nanu looked at Sana. 'By the way, you are not gay, right?'
Sana blinked at her and the friendly older woman smiled, - 'I am just asking because I will look for some beautiful ladies for you instead of a handsome boy.' She joked. Sana was flushed as the woman laughed. Daanish was smiling too.
'No, Nanu. I am not.' Sana said, embarrassed.
'Good, good.' Nanu patted her shoulder. The ladies then dispersed. Daanish looked at Sana, she avoided his gaze.
Awkward – Sana mentally rolled her eyes at her bad luck.

As the sun was about to set, the ceremony began. Sana watched Alishba climb on the stage. Aahil was already standing there. Alishba looked very elegant in Sana's design. In fact, with her make-up and hair done to perfection, she looked better than she had when she had tried the dress on. Sana felt proud looking at her best friend.
Aahil extended his hand and helped Alishba. Sana looked to her side hoping to see Daanish, but he wasn't there. She sighed and looked back on the stage. The couple exchanged smiles.
'So beautiful.' Saba gushed. Sana nodded in agreement.
Everyone clapped as the couple exchanged rings. The parents fed them and each other some sweets. The photographers clicked fanatically.
After the ring ceremony, it was time for the photo session. First close people posed with the couple. First Aahil's parents on his side clicked photos, then Alishba's parents. Next what came made Sana slightly uncomfortable.
Aahil and Alishba stood in between with Daanish on his sister's side and a young woman, Sana hadn't seen her before, stand beside Daanish. She was all smiles and held Daanish's arm with her palms.
Sana squinted her eyes for a better look. She was fair complexion and had a decent height, or perhaps it was the heels, her jet-black tresses neatly tied in a side bun with a rose stuck to it. She wore knee-length sky blue halter evening gown. She posed happily with them. Sana wondered who she was.
Then at one pose, Daanish moved his hand and placed his arm around her waist. Sana shifted uncomfortably. The girl shifted closer to him. The two looked at the clicking cameras.
Who is this girl? Must be one of their cousins. But why is Daanish holding her waist – Sana wondered with a frown. She looked away from the stage when someone tapped her shoulder. Nanu stood smiling at her. She smiled half-heartedly.
'Come, let us pose.' She held her arm and dragged her on the stage. As they climbed the stage, Daanish and the girl climbed down together. The girl was saying something to him while he was so intently listening to her that he didn't notice Sana. Even though, their shoulders brushed.
Sana posed for the camera, but she was very restless and kept glancing down. Her gaze searched for Daanish. Alishba's voice also irritated her but she kept a straight face.

After the poses, Sana was dragged to the food counter by Saba. She kept chattering while picking up her plate. She forwarded Sana a plate and she took it absentmindedly. Saba doesn't notice and kept on talking.
'Hey, Sana, Saba.'
The girls turned around hearing a voice. Sana frowned on seeing the same girl with Daanish. Why the heck is she sticking to him – Sana thought bitterly.
Saba greeted Daanish with a smile, she looked at the girl and smiled politely at her too.
'I want you to introduce to all to Nadia,' – He smiled at her and then looked back at the girls, - 'my fiancé.'
CRASH!!!
That was the sound of Sana's heart and dreams shattering. She was stunned and blinked at the couple. Saba was visibly happy. She gushed excitedly and shook hands with them congratulating them.
Daanish looked at Sana and frowned, - 'What happened, Sana? You didn't like my fiancé?' He asked raising a brow.
'Huh!' Sana looked dazed, she lowered her gaze and shook her head, - 'No.' She said.
'Nice to meet you, Sana and Saba.' Nadia said sweetly and shook hands with Saba. Sana felt uneasy shaking hands with her.
'So? Love or arrange?' Saba grinned at them.
Nadia blushed clenching Daanish's arm while he smiled at Saba.
'Arrange. We don't do love marriages our side.' Daanish informed her.
'You sound disappointed.' Saba nudged him. Daanish laughed.
'We don't do love, but we turn arrange to love.' Nadia said. She looked lovingly at Daanish and Sana felt like she would rather jump from Eiffel tower than watch their PDA.
Daanish nodded patting her palm that was resting on his arm. Sana eyed their hands with envy.
'So, when did you guys get engaged?' Saba probed further.
'It's been one year.' Daanish and Nadia said in unison. Then the two looked at each other and laughed. Sana rolled her eyes.
'Saba.' – She held her sister's shoulder, - 'my headache is aching. Let us just eat and leave.' She said avoiding looking at Daanish.
'Hey, everything is alright?' Daanish asked concerned.
'Yeah.' Sana didn't look at him and turned towards the food stall. Daanish frowned but she ignored him and his fiancé.
********************************
Sana felt heartbroken and so landed up overeating. Saba got concerned, also warned her, but Sana didn't stop. After eating to her stomach full she felt bloated and, on the way, she felt pukish in the car. The driver cursed as he parked at a secluded spot and Sana vomited into the bushes. Saba stood by her patting and caressing her back.
'Appi. I was warning you to not eat so much.' Saba said worriedly. She handed her sister a bottle of water and Sana took two big gulps of water. She felt relieved.
'Let us go.' Sana said wiping her mouth with a tissue and walking towards the cab. Saba sighed and walked behind her sister.
*****************************
Later that night, Sana walked into the balcony. She couldn't sleep. Nadia and Daanish's happy face flashed before her eyes. She recollected their clenched hands and loving gaze and scoffed.
'Arrange. They were pakka dating.' Sana clenched the balcony railing tightly and exhaled deeply.
'That bloody b**** was getting so cozy with him. Stupid Bimbo.' Sana rolled her eyes. Then, she frowned, - 'But why do I care? Daanish is, sorry, was a silly crush.' She told herself. She slammed her palms on the railing hard and then turned around walking into her room.
She lay on her back and picked up her phone from the bedside table. She plugged her earphones and scanned through the playlist and found Arijit Singh sad songs.
She played the song, closed her eyes and took a deep breath.
***************************
Everything started so beautifully. The lovely couple got engaged *dreamy smile* But then, in the end, Daanish...
