3. Her Birthday Wish
Ohayo min'na! It's not really morning here, but it's gotta be morning somewhere, right? Sorry for the long wait. This chapter is dedicated to Bubblegumgirl-sama . Stay awesome! Enjoy!
Killua's POV
I rode on my skateboard all the way to the outskirts of town. Hours has passed, the sky turning from light blue to a peachy orange to plum purple. When I finally made it to the forest, I jumped off my board and kicked it in the air to catch it. I started walking into the dark thicket.
It has been four years now, since Alluka and I left our family. Ever since the day I vowed to protect Alluka and always be with her, we've been traveling around the world. Our life was good. We were free to do whatever we want, seeing all kinds of neat things, and no one bossing you around, especially to kill someone.
It's been so long since I've killed someone, it's almost hard to believe that I used be an assassin. Life was completely different as a Zoldick. Being taught how to kill people by the time you learn how to walk. I'm glad that Alluka and I left that life and are now living our lives to the fullest.
In a wide opening within the forest parked an air blimp. From where I was walking, I could see that the lights were on, which meant that Alluka was still awake.
I walked inside of the aircraft, and was already tackled from behind with a hug.
"Oniichan!" Alluka cheered. I held on to her arms and spun her around a bit. She giggled and laughed in the motion.
"Hey, Alluka." I put her down before she could get dizzy. I turned around to see her wearing a long green skirt and her yellow shirt, with pink beads with faces on the two front strands of her hair.
"What took you so long!" She pouted.
"I ran into a couple of girls, that's all." I said casually.
"Gon is on right now!" She said excitedly.
"Gon? Really?" I said with my own excitement spiking up. I dashed to the counter where my laptop laid open. When I got there, the first thing I saw on the screen was the face of my best friend.
"Killua!" Gon shouted, expressing his excitement with that usual toothy smile of his. No matter where he was, there were no restraint to his volume whenever he was happy.
"Hey, Gon. It's been a while." I greeted. "So what'ch you've been up to?"
When I asked that question, Gon's face turned into a pouty expression. "My dad left again."
"Again?! How did you lose him this time?" I laughed.
"Two weeks ago we were out at a market. One moment he was right next to me, and when I turned around he was gone!" Gon laughed out. It became a regular thing with Gon that he would keep finding his dad and keep losing him. His father really was one hard nut.
"What about you, Killua? What have you been up to lately?"
"Hmm... Let's see... I took Alluka and I out for ice skating, went out camping, recently went to the beach-"
"Oniichan was with a girl today!" Alluka interrupted me, shoving me away from the screen as her face butted in.
"Oh, a girl?" Gon questioned in surprise.
"Alluka!" I shoved her back, but she was still pushing in to get into screen view.
"It was nothing. Just some girl who wanted to repay me for saving her life or something like that."
"Wow, Killua. You're amazing!" When Gon praised me, I felt a tinge of pink on my cheeks.
"Whatever! It was nothing..." thinking back on that day, I wasn't even trying to help her, I was just pissed at those guys for messing with me. "Anyways, you got any plans going on?"
Gon nodded. "Before I go searching for my dad again, there's this festival at Ocasus City that I want to check out called the Fireworks Fall Festival.
I heard that they release the most amazing fireworks there."
"Ocasus City? That's where we are!" I said in excitement.
"Awesome. We can meet up and watch the fireworks together!"
"Ooh, Oniichan, I want to watch the fireworks!"
"We will, Alluka." I said, petting her on the head. "So when is it?" I asked Gon.
"It's in two weeks from now. I'll meet up with you 'til then. Oh, and we can invite Leorio too if he's not busy."
"Okay, cool. But what about Kurapika?"
Gon's joy died down as he fell quiet for a minute. "Mm, I don't know. I still haven't been able to contact him after all these years.
"I see... You too, huh?" The last time I spoke with our friend Kurapika, it was through the phone on Greed Island when I had to ask him about the phantom troupe's leader. Kurapika was the only survivor of the Kurta clan, a once prosperous clan of people whose eyes would turn the richest of red when they get too excited. However, about nine years ago, Kurapika clan was wiped out when the Phantom troop stole all of his brethrens' eyes. I remembered how he would stop at nothing to get revenge on them and to reclaim the eyes of his lost people. That was probably what he's been doing all this time, but I couldn't help but feel that he could be lost somewhere.
"Oniichan!" I was snapped out of my thoughts when Alluka called out to me. She was looking at me annoyed. "What are you thinking about?"
"Oh, sorry. It's nothing." I turned my attention back to Gon. "Anyways, call me when you get here in two weeks."
"All right! See you then." After one click, the window closed, turning the view back into its usual wallpaper screen.
I got off the stool and started stretching my arms. "Ah man, am I beat. Well, I'm just gonna go hit the hay now." I said, as I started walking towards my room.
"Oniichan!" Alluka called me again. I stopped walking and turned around to see what she wanted.
"What is it?"
Alluka looked nervous, as if she couldn't find the words that she wanted to say. "U-um... my birthday is coming up soon..." She said quietly.
Of course I didn't forget that her birthday was in four days, however, I couldn't understand why she was acting so weird. This could only mean that she really wanted something special this year. "Do you want something?"
"I-I... um..." She then closed her eyes and took a deep breath. "I want to go to school!" She spat out.
"Huh?" Was my response. Was she serious?
Alluka slowly opened her eyes and looked up at me with lightly blushed cheeks. "What I want for my birthday this year... Is to attend high school."
I couldn't help but giggle. Her birthday wish was to go to school? Most kids would wish the opposite? And why on earth would you want to go to school? It's the most dull, boring, and miserable place to be in.
I tried holding it in, but Alluka's face turned stubborn, I couldn't hold it in anymore. I started laughing while holding on to my stomach.
"It's not funny!" She stated.
I sighed and tried to stay calm. "Of all things... why would you want to go to school?" I asked.
"Well, I've never actually went to school before, and before I get any older I want to experience it just once."
It was true. When we were kids, Alluka had this huge secret which resulted our parents to lock her away underground. Not just to protect our family secret or for the sake to protect others, but out of fear. Whenever Something is awake, that's when things get risky. If she did went to school like a normal girl, she would've most likely killed a lot of her classmates on the first day of school. But it wouldn't have happened if they had just treated Alluka like a real family member. I'm glad I got her out of that house.
Still, it's because of that secret that she can't go to school. We've both been homeschooled when we were kids; she wouldn't know how public schools work. Not to mention that she would be surrounded by so many people for eight hours everyday. She's too naive and childish. Students could bully her, or even worst yet, manipulate her. And if anyone found out about Something and her powers, that would mean trouble. Something could end up killing people again. That was a risk I wouldn't want to take.
"But you don't have to go to school. We're free to do whatever we want." I tried to reason.
"I know, but I want to feel like a normal girl for once."
This took me by surprise. It was the first time I ever heard Alluka say something like that. After all these years, being born in a family of assassins, being locked up in a basement, and now traveling around the world as teens, she has finally realized that she was not normal.
"It's not like you've ever been to school, Oniichan."
I closed my eyes and crossed my arms. "Well I don't have to go to school to know what it's like. The classes are boring, the teachers are bossy, and there might even be bullies."
"That's why you're gonna go with me." She smiled.
"Huh?!" I stared at disbelief as I threw my hands down. Me go to school? She has got to be joking. But looking at her intensive stare of gleam, she must be serious.
"Please, Killua. Pretty pretty please..." Oh great. Now Something wants to go to school too. If Alluka wanted to go to school, then I had no choice but to go with her. It's not like I could just let her go by herself. I must be with her at all times.
I sighed in defeat. "Fine."
Alluka's face lit up even brighter. "Yay! Thank you Oniichan!" She threw her arms around me, taking in my scent.
I was still unsure about this, but I smiled anyways and started patting her on the head. "Just for one semester."
"Mm-hmm!"
"And you can't make requests to anyone but me, all right?"
"Okay!"
