1. My Ordinary Day

A loud beeping noise was pulling out of the darkness. Out of habit, I moved my hand over my clock, hit the button, and retracted my hand back underneath the covers. The atmosphere was silent again. I know I should get up, but five more minutes wouldn't hurt.

I was awaken again, but this time with my door being knocked. "Yuki, sweetie, are you almost ready?" My mother's voice muffled through the door.

I immediately sat up, popping out of my covers, and looked at the clock. 6:32?! Ah crap, I overslept again! I kicked my blankets off my feet and dashed towards my closet. "Uh... y-yeah, mom. Just give me a minute and I'll be downstairs." I replied, hoping that she couldn't hear the panic in my voice. I could've sworn that I pressed snooze.

After I threw my school uniform on, I raced into the bathroom to brush my teeth for thirty seconds and comb my mahogany hair. I ran with my school book bag down the stairs to find my mom sitting in the kitchen while calmly sipping on her coffee mug. My little brother Rin was sitting across from her, eating his cereal.

"You overslept again, didn't you." Rin teased.

"Shut up! I'm not late yet, am I?" I snapped back at him. He stuck his tongue out and resumed eating his breakfast. I swear, that little twerp never stops annoying me, even at the most annoying times.

On the table was a nice, brown, toasted bread with butter already spread over it. "Thanks, mom. Gotta go." I said as I placed the bread in my mouth and started heading off to the door.

"Have a nice day sweetie." My mom said before I closed the door.

My name is Yuki Suzuki. I'm sixteen years old, and this is my life. I am currently in my second year of high school, which I take the train to. Hopefully I wouldn't miss it. I'm usually not always late, it's only the days when I feel really sleepy. My mom is an artist, and a really good one too. She mostly sells paintings, usually about two paintings month. She also works at a department store to keep making money. My little brother Rin is in elementary school, going to middle school. The little punk may be a dweeb, but he's not stupid. I just don't know how he managed his grades when all he does is play video games.

I ran through the blocks while nibbling on the toast that was held between my lips. As I ran down the hill and turned to the left, I could see my train at the station with doors still open. I took out the bread from my mouth and yelled, "Wait!" As if they would actually hold the doors for me. However, in this case, it was a miracle. Right after I took a giant leap to the inside, the doors closed shut right behind me, and the train started moving.

People were staring at me, but I didn't care. I was too busy panting with my hands resting on my knees. "Phew! Made... it... on time." I said between breaths.

"Congratulations." Giggled a friendly, familiar voice. I turned my head to see a girl with light hazel, short hair wearing my school's uniform, with an empty seat right next to her. "I was beginning to worry that you would actually miss the train this time."

I pushed my self to get over near the window and sat next to her. "Thanks," I said, leaning back against my seat as I let my tired muscles sag. Lizz has been my best friend since elementary, and I could always count on her. After catching my breath, I moved my toast towards my mouth and took a bite. I looked over at Lizz, admiring her new bunnet today. For some reason, she always liked wearing hats. I was surprise that the school had no dress policy against it. The hat was sky blue with a butterfly accessory attached to the side. Two of her favorite things in one. "Cute hat today."

"Thanks. So did you finish your report last night?"

"Uh, why do you think I was running late this morning? I spent hours last night writing those papers."

"That's what you get for procrastinating."

We talked on the way to the next stop. When the train stopped and the doors automatically opened, we casually walked out and began heading our way to school.

Chesterfield High is where we go to. It's just like any other public school. Lame classes, boring teachers, a great heap of homework assignments, and awesome friends and classmates to get your mind off of those worries. Most days just zoom by with my head feeling like mush by the last bell. The only parts I actually remember are the things that aren't History, and my fun time with friends.

As we walked through the school gates into the courtyard full of students, Lizz nudged on my shoulder. "Hey Yuki, isn't that Kaito over there?" At the mention of his name, I turned my attention to where Lizz pointed her finger. At a far distance, next to the library building, my classmate Kaito was walking in a group with his friends. I then immediately looked the other way, hoping Lizz wouldn't see me blushing.

"S-so what?" I said, not sounding convincing enough.

"So? You like him, don't you?"

"I mean, Kaito is a nice guy and all. He's tall, cool, good looking, and is the athletic type, but he has a girlfriend." I've known Kaito since middle school, and I've always acknowledged his kindness to others, but he never seemed to have noticed me. Not once has he looked my way. "Besides... no guy would want me."

"That's not true!" Lizz was quick to strongly disagree. "You're beautiful in many ways. You're really funny, and you can draw, make above average..."

"So I'm not physically appealing?"

"Looks doesn't matter. Some day, a guy will accept and appreciate you for who you are, and you will do the same to him."

"Man, am I beat!" I stretched out my arms and yawned as I walked beside Lizz to the train station. It was another day of school over, which meant another day of school to soon begin.

"You wrote down the homework for math, right?" Lizz asked me.

"Yeah. Don't worry, I'll send you a picture tonight." I replied.

"Good. So anyway, the Firework Festival will be coming in two weeks. You excited?" She asked in excitement.

"Yeah, totally! I'm up for anything exciting that would change this ordinary life a bit." I said.

"What's that about?" She asked curiously.

"It's just that my life feels a little boring now and these days. I mean, I'm not saying I don't appreciate you guys or my family, or the life I have now. It's just that I wish it could get a little more exciting at times."

"Be careful what you wish for, Yuki, or else you might get what you asked for." Lizz smiled.

"Like what?"

"Oh, you know, another pop quiz from Mr. Okumura."

I flinched and dug my hands in my hair. "No, not another pop quiz!" I whined. Lizz started laughing.

We made it to the station just as the train arrived. Before we could get five feet closer, I heard chime go off. I stopped in my tracks to dig out my cellphone from my bag. It was a text from mom saying,

"Sorry this is late. While you're still out, could you go buy some eggs? We're having Misoshiru for dinner."

I put my phone away and turned towards my friend. "Sorry, my mom wants me to pick something up from the store really quick."

"It's okay. I can come with you..."

"It's all right. I'll just take the next train." Lizz's face looked unsure, but then changed to reassurance.

"All right. Just be careful. I'll see you tomorrow." She waved off, then stepped into the train.

"See ya."

Inside the grocery store, I picked up a carton of a dozen eggs off of the shelf. With the only objective I came here for, I headed straight for the register counter. While waiting in line, I couldn't help but overhear two people's conversation behind me.

"Man, I can't believe I couldn't get through the first stage!" One man in a grey cap complained.

"Well it's the Hunter exam, what did you expect?" His friend replied. "You have to be some sort of super human to pass."

I've heard that the Hunter exams were suppose to be supper challenging. So challenging that they're almost impossible to pass. Hunters were those who were able to reach the far reaches of the earth, go on treasure hints, and even hunt other people, no matter how challenging. I should know, since my dad was a Hunter once.

He was a great father, and a really amazing Hunter. One day, when I was eight, and Rin only four, our mother received news that he was killed on a job. Although life as a Hunter could be exciting and set you for life, it can also be very dangerous. Maybe a nice, quiet life may not be so bad.

"Excuse me, Miss." I was snapped put of my thoughts when the store employee called me. "You're next."

"Oh, right, sorry."

After I payed for the eggs, I exited out of the store, and acknowledged how late it was getting. The sun was already setting in a shade of orang.

I turned to the alley to take a quick short cut. In the narrow passage between two buildings, I saw two men at the end of the alley. I decided to turn around and just take the long way to avoid any contact with strangers. However, right when I turned around, there was already another man, looking down at me. I was startled and took a step back. He wore an orange jacket vest with an orange watch cap, and a grim.

"Hey there, pretty girl. Sorry to scare you like that." He said, but he wasn't being polite. I could tell that he was playing with me.

"Oh, no, it's all right."

"Hey, Tombo! Where have you been?" One of the other two men called out from behind me. I looked back to see them heading our way. Now my exits were blocked.

"Oh nowhere. Just being acquainted with this fine lady here, that's all." His buddies were getting closer, all of them deviously smiling at me.

"I was just heading home." I said, trying to stay calm and hold my ground, showing them I wasn't afraid of them, even though deep down, I was shaking.

"Are you lost?" The scrawny guy asked me, stepping closer into my space.

I took a small step, getting ready to pull my phone out of my bag. "I'm not lost."

"Even if you aren't, these parts in the city can be dangerous in the evenings. You don't know what shady strangers could be lurking around in the neighborhood."

"Maybe we should escort you home. you know."

I needed a clear opening to make my escape. "Leave me alone." I said, looking hard at one of them in the eyes.

"Come on, girly. We only want to protect you. Just stick with us." The one behind me was about to reach for my hand. While he was slightly off guard, I took the opportunity to punch him on the nose. I couldn't tell how much strength I put into it, for I was getting too excited with adrenaline, but it was enough for him to yell in pain and look away.

I took a dash to his open side, about to pull out my phone to call for help, but one of his buddies already grabbed me and pulled me against the wall. The other guy yanked my backpack and phone away from me and threw them to the ground. The big guy in orange slapped his hands on the brick wall on both sides of my head, keeping me trapped between his arms. "You're gonna pay for that." He growled with his nose swelling red.

"Now Tombo, remember to give us a chance to play with the toy before you break it," the other guy said.

This wasn't good. I couldn't move. All I could do was tremble against the wall. Even if I try to struggle, I couldn't fight all three of these guys by myself. Somebody, please, save me!

And just like that, my prayer was answered. I heard the sound of wheels rolling against the pavement. I peeked over the shoulder of the guy on my right and saw someone riding on his skateboard heading our way. "Help! Please, help me!" I shouted in distress. Thank goodness I was lucky enough to have someone rescue me.

It was a guy wearing a purple hoodie with his hood over his head, riding on a yellow skateboard. He was getting closer and closer, until when he finally reached us... he passed by. I was in disbelief. Not only did he not stop to aid a helpless girl against three creeps, but he also didn't even look at me. Did he not see me or something? Or rather, he was just to scared to get in a fight. "Hey!" I yelled at him, but he was still moving. I looked down and found a crumple up tin can. Without my attackers noticing, still watching the guy in confusion of how he could ignore me, I picked up the can and threw it at the skater. It was a direct head shot, causing him to stop on his tracks.

In my head, I cheered yes for making such a perfect aim, and for hitting the guy who chose to ignore me in my time of need. "Hey!" Tombo yelled, grabbing both of my wrists and pushing them against the wall. I yelped at the pain. "No playing any tricks."

"Did one of you just hit me?" The voice came from the person who stepped off his skateboard. He pulled back his hood, revealing his messy, silver hair, and his headphones. I guess that was the reason why he couldn't hear me calling for help. He pulled them down, letting them hang over his shoulders, and slowly turned around. His glare from those full blue eyes sent shivers down my spine, making me regret throwing the can at him.

"Beat it, runt! Just get back on your skateboard and pretend you didn't see anything." The boy finally looked at me for the first time, then turned back to the other three.

"What's going on here?" He asked. Finally, now we're getting somewhere!

"Please, help me." I called out, feeling hopeful.

"Shut up, you!" Tombo yelled at me, causing me to slack back against the wall. The boy took his first steps toward us.

"Hey, mind your own business!" yelled out the one in the turtleneck. The boy didn't stop. He just casually walked closer with his hands in his pockets. What was he doing? I was glad that he was going to help me, but how was he going to beat these guys? Was he even scared? Turtleneck guy stepped right in front of him. "If you don't beat it... then I'll beat you!" With that said, he landed a huge punch on his stomach. I cringed at the sight of the pain. The boy bent down, kneeling on one knee.

"H-hey! Are you okay?" What kind of stupid question was that? Of course he wasn't okay. He just had his air punched out of him.

The guy who punched him chuckled, then turned around, placing his attention towards me. "Now, where were we?"

"You guys still need to finish what you started..." The three guys turned around surprised to see the boy standing again. Even I was astonished to see how he was able to recover with that fatal blow. It looked like it could've hurt badly to any average person.

"You wants some more?" Turtleneck grew irritated, already punching his knuckles into his palm.

"Try hitting me again and see what happens." the boy provoked, and for some reason, was smiling.

"You asked for it!" The man thrusted another punch at him, but this time, the boy quickly stepped aside, causing the man's fist to miss. With the man wide open, the boy landed a strikingly, more powerful punch to his stomach, really knocking the wind out of him. He gasped and landed on the floor, clutching onto his stomach, barely breathing.

"Why you-" Tombo left me to avenge his friend. He tried to throw a punch at his face, but the boy ducked and swiftly kicked him behind the knee. With Tombo bent down off guard, the silver head chopped the back of his neck with one hand, knocking him out cold. When he turned to the scrawny member of the gang, the man was so terrified at he just scurried away, abandoning his friends to save himself.

When all was calm, I slid down against the wall and sat down, sighing in relief. It all happened so fast, but I was glad it was over. On the ground, two pairs of black converse stood in front of me. I looked up to see that it was my rescuer.

"Thank you so much for saving me." I said cheerfully. However, the boy just intensely stared at me without saying a word. I was confused at first, until I remembered the reason why he stopped and beat up those jerks in the first place. Did he figure out that it was me who threw the can at him? Is he going to hurt me now? He leaned down closer to me, and I closed my eyes, holding on to my knees tight, waiting for the worst to happen.

"Are these yours?" His voice calmly reached out to me. I cracked my eyes open to see my school and grocery bags in front of my face. I looked up at the boy who was handing them over to me. Now that I have gotten a better look at him, he didn't seem scary at all. His eyes were clearly more light blue than dull blue. In fact, he seemed about the same age as me, and he was kind of cute.

I reached out to retrieve my things. "Thank you." I said. I checked my phone to see its conditions after being thrown to the ground. Only a few scratches, no cracks, and was fully functional. I stood up and dusted the dirt off my skirt. "Thank you so much for..." My voice trailed off when I realized that the boy was already gone. I looked both ways of the alley. Not a single trace. It was just me and the two unconscious bodies.

Who was that boy?

Yeah, so I decided to start a fan fiction of HunterXHunter if you're familiar with that anime. It takes place four years after the end of the anime, so that makes Killua, and a few other characters, older in this story. I don not own anything from the HxH series, only my own original characters. Since it's my own story and I'm fully aware of it, let me just put it out there: CLECHE!!! I hope you all enjoyed it.
