When someone tells you it's okay, do you think it's alright to believe them?

Or are they lying?

Patton lay awake in his bed, hands softly bunching the blanket in his hands.

I'm okay.

He took a deep breath and turned over, trying hard not to cry. He was supposed to be the happy character, the cheerful, supporting person who held everyone up and always laughed.

The positive person in this sad, sad story.

I have to be okay.

His door creaked open, and Virgil entered. He sat on the edge of Patton's bed, a quiet expression on his face.

"Do you need anything?" he asked, placing a hand on the other's leg.

"No."

Patton's reply was nearly silent, a small whisper, a rustle of leaves in a grand forest. Such a small noise, and yet so much power echoed in that word.

Virgil sighed, standing up. "Dinner's ready, if you want any. It's okay if you don't."

The brunette nodded softly. "Thanks."

Pausing at the door, Virgil looked back at the quiet figure. "Are you alright?"

Patton didn't talk for a while. Virgil stopped walking, waiting for an answer. It was clear he wasn't going to move until he got one.

Trying to smile, Patton just nodded. "Yeah."

"I'm okay."

Giving him a small grin that flashed his fangs, Virgil nodded back and slipped outside the door, closing it with a silent thump.

Alone, Patton didn't move, didn't speak.

He tried to take deep breaths, but his throat was blocked up.

I need to smile.

What's wrong with me?

I'm okay.

I... have to be.

He rubbed his eyes and breathed slowly out. His eyes slowly closed, and he drifted off to sleep like a lost cloud.

"Just go!"

As loud as a thunderclap, yet Roman's plea was lost on deaf ears, as Patton desperately tried to drag him toward the doors. Tears streaked both faces, landing with soft plops on the marble floor.

"No! I'm not leaving you he--" The words were cut off as he began to cough violently, his other hand going to the gaping wound on his side.

Roman gritted his teeth. "You're not injured as... as bad as I am," he panted. "You can still move. Go! Now!"

"No!" Patton screamed, now trying to look for another set of doors.

Maybe there was one closer.

Maybe he could save him.

He collapsed onto his knees, sobbing. "I'm not... leaving you behind," he finally whispered, clutching tightly at Roman's hand. "If you die... I die."

Roman pressed a soft, quiet kiss to Patton's hand. "The Hunters show no mercy," he murmured, bringing Patton's hand to his cheek. "It will be quick, and mostly painless. Don't worry about me, just save yourself."

"Why?" Patton said, his voice trembling and weak, his eyes now downcast. "Why are we vampires? Why did this have to happen to us?"

Laughing quietly, Roman stroked Patton's hand with his thumb. "It's just the ending to this sad love story, my sunlight."

Patton gulped in air, tears streaming silently down his face. He was shaking visibly, his hands and breathing quaking with fear. "I just... I don't want to leave you," he whispered. "I love you."

"And so do I," Roman breathed gently. "I love you so, so, so much, darling. And that's exactly why you have to leave."

"But if I leave they'll kill you!" Patton sobbed, nearly yelling again. "I don't... I don't want you to go yet," he whimpered, quiet and sudden as a stick snapping in the forest.

Roman struggled to sit up. "They'll kill me anyway, love, you know that." He kissed Patton's cheek, stroking his hair. "You have to go now." Tears were gathering in his eyes, beautiful and clear like crystals.

Patton began to cough again, blood leaking out of his mouth and spattering on the floor, red vibrant and rich against the creamy white marble. "I can save you," he whispered. "I can. I just need..."

"My star, Patton, you have to go. They'll be here any sec--" Roman was cut off by two wooden doors slamming open.

People, dressed in dark grey uniforms and carrying silver crossbows, stormed inside. "There they are! The vampires! Get them!"

Roman hissed out a soft curse. "Go."

Patton's eyes, so blue they could have been filled with the ocean and sea, were horrified. Blood was dripping off of his face and streaming down his arms. Tears mixed with the bright scarlet liquid, salty and transparent.

"But..."

The redhead's eyes, mirroring Patton's, were soft as velvet. "My love. Patton. Listen to me." He gathered Patton's face in his hands and kissed him gently, sweet as honey and sad as a battlefield.

When he let go, Patton was crying again. Roman smiled softly, reaching up and brushing Patton's cheeks with his thumb. "Don't cry... starlight. You have to run."

Patton let out a choked sob. "But, Roman..."

"Get them!" The uniformed Hunters began to run across the large room, aiming their crossbows. "Kill the monsters!"

Roman mustered all of his energy and shoved Patton, pushing the shorter one away. "Go! Now!"

Patton, clutching at the wound on his side, tears leaking out of his eyes, expression terrified and sorrowful, quietly nodded. "I love you..." he whispered.

Roman smiled.

"I love you too."

It was beautiful, that smile.

Dripping with blood, streaked with tears and dirt, but just as sweet and gentle as the first time Patton had seen it.

Carving that smile into his memory, Patton stood up, brushing his cloak around him. He couldn't turn into a bat, he was too injured and that took too much energy.

A set of double doors at the other end of the hall yawned open, and Janus stuck his head through. "Come on, Patton!" he yelled.

Patton took one last, long look at Roman, then ran.

Quick as the wind and just as quiet.

"Wake up!"

Logan shook Patton awake.

The shorter one gasped for air, clutching his chest and wincing as his still-fresh wound echoed with pain.

Logan stepped back. "You were having a nightmare, and screaming in your sleep, so I woke you up."

Patton took a deep breath and blinked, looking around.

It was still his bedroom.

It was still their house, the one that all the vampires shared.

But it wasn't the same...

Not without...

Logan placed a comforting, soft hand on Patton's shoulder. "Come down for breakfast. We cannot have you collapsing, alright?"

Patton looked up at Logan, who offered a kind smile. "Virgil and I made breakfast today."

"You and your boyfriend, huh," Patton laughed softly, sadly. "I wish..."

Logan looked carefully at Patton, his deep blue eyes gazing sorrowfully at the brunette. "...I wish too," he murmured.

Then he stood up and left the room.

The closing door echoed around the dark, silent room, making Patton's head hurt again.

Tears began to spring at his eyes, blurring the edges of his vision.

"...I wish you were here, my love..."
