Sunshine

Please note - This is a short story, I am perfectly happy right now I just wanted to wright something sad :3 For better affect, please listen to 'You are my Sunshine' in a sadder tone.

The tiniest gleam of sunlight came from the horizon, filling the ShadowClan camp with shadows. Fearful murmuring came from a corner, where three apprentices were huddled together.

"It's alright, Rosepaw... It was her time."

"B-but, s-she, she w-wanted to s-stay..!"

"Rosepaw, it'll all be ok by tonight, we promise."

Beetlepaw wrapped his fluffy tail around the sobbing reddish-ginger she-cat, her darker ears flattened.

Larkpaw also sat on her other side, the Clan still asleep. Rosepaw had been crying since the night before, hiccuping or coughing every few minutes, exhausted.

"She was my only sunshine.."

- A few hours earlier -

A matted, elderly pale gray and white she-cat laid within her den, an apprentice crouching beside her, grooming her old friend's head calmly.

"You are my sunshine, my only sunshine... You make me happy, when skies are gray... You'll never know dear, how much I love you... Please don't take, my sunshine, away..."

The elder hummed softly, as Rosepaw kindly wrapped her tail around Snowfall. "Shh, save your energy."

"Could you get me a squirrel, please..?" the elder's voice was old and cracked and raspy, her tired blue eyes slightly clouded. Rosepaw nodded, slipping from the den and returning in an instant, a limp squirrel dangling from her jaws.

"Thank you." Snowfall replied in a raspy tone, eating the prey slowly. "Snowfall, we're friends, right?"

Snowfall nodded weakly, resting her head on her pale paws as the sun's final light dipped below the sky. "Always, young warrior.."

"May I stay with you tonight?"

Snowfall nodded, inviting Rosepaw into her nest, wrapping her tail around the much younger she.

"May I tell you a story?". Rosepaw nodded kindly.

"Many, many moons back, there was a cat - named Rose. She grew up for her Clan, and fought. She was the best hunter, the bravest fighter. And then one day, she met a scrawny old elder named Snow. The two became best friends, and then, Snow had to leave the Clan. Rose was heartbroken and missed her dearly. Though... They both met up later on and continued their adventures together." Snowfall finished and coughed slightly.

"Just like us." Rosepaw purred gently, nuzzling Snowfall. "Yes.. Just like us." Snowfall repeated warmly, her voice still cracked and raspy.

"Can you promise me something, Rosepaw?"

The she nodded, ears pricking to listen.

"Will you always remember my lullaby?"

Rosepaw nodded, nuzzling Snowfall, "As long as you sing it to me one last time."

"Very well.." Snowfall coughed feebly.

"You are my sunshine, my only sunshine... You make me happy, when skies are gray... You'll never know dear, how much I love you... Please don't take, my sunshine, away..."

Rosepaw smiled, nuzzling her friend. "Rosepaw... My time to go is nearing."

Tears pricked the apprentice's eyes as Snowfall finished her sentence. "W..What...?"

"Please... S-sing my lullaby, so I know you'll n..never forget..." Snowfall rasped, her eyes becoming clouded.

"You are my sunshine... My only, sunshine... You make me happy, when skies are gray... You'll never know dear... How much I love, you... Please don't take... My sunshine, away.."

As the final tune of the melody dropped, Snowfall smiled softly, before her eyes closed and she stilled. Horror shot through Rosepaw's face, before being replaced by grief.

"Snowfall...!" she whimpered, tears dribbling from her eyes as she sobbed onto her friend's fur.

She felt an invisible presence beside her.

"You were my sunshine..."

- Back to present -

Rosepaw's soft sobs died down slowly, as she hummed the sacred melody once more.

"She was my sunshine, my only sunshine... She made me happy, when skies were gray... She never knew, dear, how much I loved her... Why did they take my sunshine away...?"

She made modified it slightly, a final tear sliding down her face.

"She was my sunshine."
