Chapter 9 Hope

It's, quite. There's no noise, not even the sound of your footsteps could be heard as echoes along the walls, but some how it's better this way. It's almost, soothing. To have no sound and be in such a dimly lit place.

Truth be told you're not sure where you are, but the water here glows a soft blue and the flowers glow a similar shade as they dance with your movements. This place, you feel like it's familiar. Like you know a place like this. Your eyes drag up to the sky, and where you thought you'd see the dark navy of the night sky with its twinkling stars and shimmering moon, was replaced with a ceiling with crystals that hung so distantly above they could of been mistaken for stars.

It was beautiful and yet in its own way, carried a sense of sadness to it. Captivating. A longing for freedom. You're not sure how you got here, how you even wandered inside this strange cave. But here you were. Walking with the flowers and admiring the soft world around you. It filled you, with determination.

At first, you had forgotten about your previous predicament. Forgotten about Error and ink, sans and papyrus. Toriel and asgore. Alphys and undyne, all the other lovely monsters you had become friends with. And, last, but certainly not least and by far the most important, Chara.

All of your troubles were behind you, and it was as if time it's self was no more. It felt better this way. Softly sitting down in the deep blue grass you closed your eyes in contentment, listening to the sudden sound that suddenly became present. In the distance it sounded as if a soft shower was taking place. Rain pittering against the floor of the cave, but it was merely a sound. (And no matter how you tried to see it, you simply couldn't see the rain.) Mixed with the sound of the soft rush of water from the river system, it was as if you had finally achieved true contentment.

The flowers softly swayed at your side, as if a soft wind gently blew them that way. Everything felt right in the world and all that truly mattered was this moment. That was, until suddenly someone intruded your small world.

"(Y/N)." The voice, it sounded, strange. Your eyes opened quickly but you oddly found you didn't feel afraid. No not like you had felt when he talked. Suddenly, memories of all the events that had lead to this exact moment flooded your mind. How did you exactly end up here? Did error kill you, take your soul? Is this what the after life looks like?

"You don't need to worry." The voice spoke again, sounding calm as ever. It seemed to notice your sudden frantic state as you looked around about to rise in an effort to get a real sense of this world around you.

"I'm here to help you, and hopefully return you to your Au before your code corrupts." The voice seemed to have a gentle and childlike nature to it. But somehow it was stern and serious.

What does the voice mean by code? Like a computer code?

Your nose crinkled confused at the thought. No way the voice means that, and besides you're not even sure you trust this whole situation. Where was Chara? All their new friends and family? Where were they all?

"I'm sorry, you must be confused, it's rude of me not to introduce my self." The voice seemed sympathetic and almost guilty for not introducing itself. To make up for it they revealed themselves, a small child roughly the size and height of Chara stood before you now. Though where there should be eyes, two large gaping holes were in their place. (The eyes looked like they should of been black and hollow, but instead they were white and almost seemed to glow. It's unnerving.)

You jumped back, fearful at the sight of the gray and white figure if a child before you looking all too similar to your sibling and yet different all at once. Your heart pounded so wildly in your chest you feared it may jump out of your throat and run. It was like you were looking at a reanimated corpse. But minus the smell of rotting flesh. Still just as terrifying.

"You can call me CORE Frisk, I help people like you who have been taken from their Au's and can't get back, or are lone survivors of a destroyed Au. I take them someplace special, so they can be safe. My purpose is to deliver you back to your Au before your code corrupts. I can't help you once that happens." CORE frisk seemed so calm and yet worried all at once. But the part you were still dwelling on was how similar they looked to your sibling.

"I-um-" you felt a lump form in your throat. You felt like you just couldn't say anything. Maybe that was your heart it finally found a way out of your chest and was trying to jump out.

"I suppose my appearance scares you." CORE frisk smiled almost amused.
"Don't worry I won't hurt you. Take your time to adjust."

You just stared, a silence hung in the air and the only noise was from the precious sounds just moments ago. The tranquility of it all was gone, and now replaced with a feeling of dread. So many questions ran through your head. What was happening? Why do they look like Chara? What do they mean by code? So much to process.

Your hand raised to your head pressing against your hair pushing it up slightly from where you had placed it as you simply stared at the child. What to say? What to do? Maybe you should try asking some questions. Was this a dream?

"W-wh-what," you cleared your throat to try and form a more intelligible sentence, "what do you mean before my code corrupts? And what do you mean by not being able to help me if it does? And-and where are we? And where is everyone!- and!- and!"

You were starting to talk fast, panicked even, but CORE frisk merely listened and waited until you took a gulp of air. Then they spoke.

"Our worlds, are comprised of a string of numbers called code, they're what makes up everything. Sort of like matter, how matter is in everything, code is too. Your code, is apart of many codes in the character section of your Au, it's what makes you...you. To put it simply imagine yourself like a saved file on a computer or in a video game. If your code becomes corrupt the character "model" or file that you had stored information on, has a harder time of being salvaged. I can't risk, bringing you back to the safe haven because of a corrupted code. You could infect the whole Au." The more CORE frisk elaborated the more and more confused and lost you became.

It was like someone was telling you that your whole life was being lived from inside of a video game that happened to have multiple alternate realities. But did that mean that there are multiple time lines? Where different events occur? It was almost laughable and yet somehow you believed it all.

"Okay...." you muttered a bit slowly dropping your hand from your head.
"But, why would my code be corrupt?"

"You've been taken away from your Au, in short, your code was stripped from it. But don't worry, your friends and family still remember you, but if you're away for too long your code will corrupt. You won't be able to go back to your home and will take residence in an anti void, because your Au will recognize you as an error and refuse to let you back." CORE frisk tried in the best way they could to explain it in a way that wouldn't scare you. But regardless it still make your stomach twist and your chest tighten in fear.

It all made sense, and yet at the same time it didn't. You wished you could better grasp what was being said, better understand it with no questions and no anxiety. But you were scared. The idea of it all was crazy! This situation was just crazy.

"I can see I've worried you." CORE Frisk seemed to smile a bit sadly at the thought.
"I wasn't trying to scare or worry you those aren't my intentions. I'm here to help you before it's too late...before you unintentionally become like him."

Him?

You furrowed your brow now at the choice of words. The only him you knew was error, he fit the criteria and now that you pondered over all the information you wondered...was he like you at one point? Desperate to save his AU, his family? But instead his code was corrupt and made him the way he was? Still while the pieces fit...something felt off.

"Who's...him?" You hesitated on your next question lowering your hand from your face to gaze at CORE frisk better. Their hollowed white eyes just gazed at you before suddenly flickering away.

"You don't need to worry about it for now..." the vague answer didn't help your curiosity. For now though you figured you'd drop the subject. It seemed like a bad one. Still...who was him? And how would you end up like him?

"Um, can I ask one more question?" You hesitated feeling like you asked too many already. CORE frisk seemed to perk up at your voice turning their eyes to gaze at you once more.

"Of course, I'm happy to answer any questions you have within reason. Like I said I want to help you." CORE frisk smiled, suddenly the little kid didn't seem so scary but more comforting.

"I- have a lot it's hard to process everything you've just said," you chewed on the inside of your cheek, "but how can I get away from error and still make sure my home-Ah- Au stays safe?"

CORE frisk just gazed at you again longer than before with a string of silence. It was almost defining if it wasn't for the soft sound of rushing water. But it seemed they were thinking about the best approach.

"Error won't let you leave willingly, if you stay with him too long in the anti void it could corrupt your code faster than if you were just in another au. I know this must all be complicated for you, and there's a lot of danger we should anticipate for. I have a friend, his name is dream, if he can find you he could better help you than me. For now though until I'm able to reach him it's best if you humor error and keep off his bad side."

The explanation was long and thoughtful but you knew CORE frisk wasn't sure a safe way to keep you and your ya afloat. Seeming to already know your deal with the anomaly who calls himself error CORE frisk seemed apprehensive. This felt like it was going no where. Who was dream? And what about that ink guy? Did CORE frisk not trust him? Why? He failed saving you sure but he seemed like the hero type to you.

Your hands rested on the soft grass beneath you as an unknown wind swept through the land. You heaved a breath trying to calm down. There was a lot to process and you still had so many questions.

"What about ink?" The question slipped. CORE frisk just looked hesitant.

"He is...an interesting variation. But I wouldn't trust him too much." They seemed to be trying to be nice but something felt off. Who did you trust more ink who you saw for a second or this ghost child who says they can help you with their friend dream?

Don't trust him.

You echoed the words in your own way back in your head. Error had a grudge against this ink guy, and CORE frisk who was actually kind to you seemed to be hesitant on him. You felt like something bigger was going on. You shuddered feeling like someone was watching you.

"We can't talk too much longer, it seems we've got unwanted attention." CORE frisk's mood changed, now much more serious than before. Was there something bad? What was it? Who was the unwanted attention.
"See you again (Y/N)."

CORE frisk waved with a smile and the world seemed to get fuzzy. Wait! Wait no! Not yet there's still more you need to know!

"Wait!" You called out reaching for your new friend who seemed so far away.
"Where are we?! How will I find you again?!"

Your voice called out into what was starting to feel like a void. The soft and lush area in this dark cavern seemed to be vanishing leaving you alone in the darkness.

"I'll find you again, don't worry, next time I hope with dream. Don't loose hope (Y/N) and keep your determination. Stay safe."

CORE Frisk's voice faded and as their last words met your ears ringing off in the distance you found your self completely alone in the darkness.

"Interesting."

Who's voice was that?! You looked around wildly in search of the voice your heart beating out of your chest again. You strained to see in the darkness, you were standing now alone, tiles beneath your feet but nothing else in few.

You wanted to speak, but fear got the best of you. You tried to step back only one foot managing to swivel behind you as yours shoes squeaked against them flood, suddenly they felt wet. You could see better eyes slowly adjusting to the darkness to see water was rising. You wanted to scream, you wanted to swim and keep yourself afloat, but you failed to realize you were in a dream. No, you were now having a nightmare.

"HEY!"

The loud voice was jarring enough to startle you awake. You gasped and as your eyes shot open they quickly winced and closed again due to the sheer brightness of the white room. You winced again retracting you're head back and looked to the side pressing your lips together.

"Finally. Ugh. I've been trying to get you to wake up for too long now! Hurry up and snap outta it." Ah error. He grumbled and seemed unamused with you as you slowly opened your eyes looking at the world around you hesitantly. Now confused on what was real and what wasn't.

"I..fell asleep?" Your voice was soft unable to get louder as you slowly met error's gaze. He had his arms crossed with a pointed frown.

"I don't know," he shrugged disinterested, "I don't really care either way. But we're going some where."

He scoffed as he rolled his eyes seeming unhappy with having to make you tag along. What? Going somewhere? Why? You thought he was going to leave you like last time. Alone and tangled in his blue strings that were still snuggly around your body and soul.

"Why?" The question left you before you had time to properly remember your situation. Your encounter with CORE frisk and then the way the whole world became a nightmare of sorts was still on your mind. Unshaken.

Code. Au's. Computers. Ah your head hurt thinking about it.

"Don't look at me like I'm an idiot! IM NOT!" Error's vicious yell suddenly startled you back to the very real reality before you. He was your captor. Not just another monster from the underground who came with your sibling to the surface.

"I didn't say you were!" You gasped in argument feeling brave about your words. Error seemed shocked you spoke back for the first time but instead huffed and rolled his eyes.

"I guess you didn't." He seemed indifferent and now you kept your mouth clamped shut afraid to speak again. After a long pause error seemed to weigh his options heavily until at last with a long groan he spoke.

"Fine. I'll answer your stupid question. I don't want to leave you unsupervised. I don't want that stupid STUPID! Idiot! Coming in here while I'm out to rescue you!" Error grinned staring at you, his voice scratched and repeated often in his words.
"So you're coming with me until I figure out what to do with you."

What to do with me?

You wanted to gulp nervously at the thought but quickly shook it off. You wished you had more time to think. To be left alone to your thoughts over everything that just happened. You were about to say something but only let out a loud yelp as your body was released and you fell to the floor with a thud. Your limbs were numb from being suspended in the air for so long and your soul, such a weird concept, was aching from the strain of being tangled.

"Don't get any ideas though. Just because I'm letting you go with me and walk around doesn't mean you're free yet. Even though I've finally won for once." Error grinned at the idea of his triumph over ink, one of his skeletal hands raising from his crossed armed position to clench into a tight fist.

You shakily rose from the ground to dust off your pants coughing lightly. Every muscle in your body hurt. But you had to keep going. You had to go with him. You rubbed your shoulders trying to work out some knots vaguely hearing errors words, but you think he was rambling about how he was happy to finally rub it in ink's stupid face that he won and that the colorful anomaly didn't always win.

Chara...are you doing better without me? Please be safe, please.

You closed your eyes somberly at your own thoughts. You were in this mess for them. For your au, for your new family. Your mind wouldn't forget your decision or the look on their faces as error tore you away. They were all horrified with your drastic decision.

"HEY! I'm talking to you glitch!" Error's annoyed and brash voice broke your train of thoughts as you opened your eyes grimacing at the soreness of your body. Your gaze met his and noticed his distance now that you were free.

"I-...I'm sorry what did you say?" You sputtered not sure what to say except apologize for not listening. Error seemed surprised at your manners but promptly dismissed them. You didn't care, and you didn't care he called you a glitch you still found it ironic.

"I said, if you had been listening, we're leaving now." Error scoffed at you and expected you to follow him as he snapped his fingers almost seeming to slice reality in half. It was like watching a doorway be created from nothing as the air broke apart to reveal an endless night sky that stranded out into what seemed like never ending galaxies. The grass was an abnormal color and the warmth of the air suddenly flooded in to the anti void.

You've only seen error open access points, you were going to call them that now after what CORE frisk told you, a few times but from a distance and during a bad time. But seeing them now, no real danger other than defying what ever he wanted of you, it was almost fascinating.

He was able to jump between worlds and yet he wants to destroy them all? He has the ability to be anywhere he wanted! Why did he want to destroy so badly? Your gaze wandered to error as he stuffed his hands into his pant pockets pulling his long coat off to the side in a way as it hung loosely from where it was creased at his pants. He seemed indifferent to your stare as he walked forward almost ignoring you.

You found yourself following him silently stepping into the new world with a new sense of wonder. You didn't realize how stale the air was in the anti void but here it was pleasant. It was warm and comforting like something out of a sweet memory. You looked around at everything unable to help your curiosity. It was like you were in space, the stars were real and so far away but seemed just within reach. You could almost raise your hand and touch them. What is this beautiful world? This inviting au? What was it?

"Come on." Error huffed walking ahead of you and your captivated expression fell as you quickly followed after him. Where was he going? You just followed gazing up at the beautiful sky feeling at least partially free.

You failed to see the brightly illuminated sign as you walked with error, which read in colorful and inviting font "WELCOME TO SNOWDIN".
