Chapter 16 The Calm Before The Storm
What is this feeling? This floating feeling? You felt, safe you guessed. Like floating on clouds away from the world below in a comfort, warmed by the rays of the sun. Yes, yes you think you'll associate this feeling with safety.
Such warmth, you don't want to leave the feeling. It was as if being wrapped in a blanket waking up all on your own in the middle of a cold winter day. Warm and content and unwilling to move.
You're not sure how long it's been now since you wanted to be Error's friend, but it's been long enough now. Long enough for you to realize he's not as bad as he seems. Maybe it's been a day, though you're not so sure. Time feels like an obscure concept now. Like here it's not real. You felt content regardless. Knowing that Dream relayed your message back to Chara. To your friends. They knew how you were now. And that well, error wasn't so bad.
It was rather funny really. He had quite a personality you didn't even imagine from him till the two of you had gotten comfortable enough with each other. Ah the memories you made, thinking about it your mind wandered to the time you found out he slept on a cardboard box. At the time you instantly gasped. You felt bad for him and the look he gave you said not to be. (Maybe he was also embarrassed.)
"I LIKE IT!" He shouted out to you shrilly at the time, as if embarrassed. That didn't stop your sympathetic gaze. He just threw a fit from there about not needing to worry for him and he likes his box and doesn't want your pity. As usual.
Things were better now. You had some place to sleep and spending the day with error wasn't nearly as bad as it used to be. He went through the effort to make you comfortable and you tried your best in return to be there when he asked. It's funny how the two of you clicked. Though you never imagined you would befriend him, much less so easily.
Error was...error. There was no easy way to describe him. He was almost like a stubborn child at times, and others he was loud and obnoxious. It was clear he thought he was the funniest person in the multiverse. He was stubborn, but he was nice in his own weird way.
It wasn't that bad being with him. He tried his best really to make you comfortable. It's just, you miss your home. And that was something that you couldn't deny no matter how hard you tried to. Even if error was bringing you to such wonderful Au's that were just so....beautiful. He was at least trying to let you have some taste of freedom. (But without you actually being free.) You still missed your family, your friends.
Don't think he didn't notice. Error did. He just was too stubborn to admit he was disappointed. You were okay company he guessed. You were entertaining and he didn't mind the companionship. You respected his boundaries though whether that's just how you were as a person or were doing it because he's still your captor he didn't know, what he did know though is you kept your space.
He liked that, not having to worry about you suddenly touching him. He hated touch. But he found he didn't mind you what he considered too close. Though to most people that was just normal distance or maybe just a smidge closer than that. It would be a lie to say that the thought of returning you to your home AU hadn't crossed his mind once or twice. But he kept telling himself he couldn't not when he had to win.
Yeah that was the excuse, he had to beat ink at his own little game. Not that error just really hated to see you go. To leave him all alone again, bitter at the universe. Maybe he was being selfish, but he didn't care enough to address that. He didn't care enough to even entertain the thought that the real reason he wanted you to stay here and be so comfortable was because he liked your company more than he should.
It was quite as of right now, neither of you knowing a thing the other was thinking. But isn't it better that way? To sit in silence just close to the other? Error was crocheting, eyeing you all the while as you read a book that had been picked up from another AU. (It's not like you got phone service out here and besides your phone broke those few times you had been tossed about.)
Words wanted to form on his lips, teeth, but nothing came out. It was as if with you around he was speechless. Wasn't that a first? A speechless error, who just loves hearing himself talk. What is it that's so different about you compared to all the other anomalies? Well he couldn't tell you. (Even if he wanted to.)
Yes peaceful is exactly what you'd describe life right now even if it was some what lonely. Your fingers flicked between the pages, caressing each one with such thoughtful care. The book was interesting, it was fascinating to see different retellings of famous tales in different universes.
You think by now you've gone through quite a few variants of The Phantom of The Opera and Beauty and The Beast. Each one was different and even though the formula of the story was the same the outcome and the characters all differed. Alternative Realties were something else.
"Why do you keep reading the same book?" Error's voice broke the comfortable silence, it's glitches more pronounced than normal. (You wondered why that was.)
Your eyes peeled up from over the book you were reading, a variant of Beauty and The Beast titled Fair Lady and The Monster. You shrugged a bit before you smiled looking back at the words.
"I just think each telling is unique, like this version of Beauty and The Beast is about a monster who lives in a town filled with brutal and horrible other monsters like him. And the beauty, is a kind hearted lady who accidentally found her self surrounded by these terrible people and her kindness really makes them reconsider their morals. I don't know out loud it sounds dumb but it's actually really sweet."
You carefully marked the page you last read with your book mark as you shut the book gazing at error finishing up your brief summary. He just stared at you for a minute, fingers weaving yarn between the two rods before he looked away and hummed.
"Sounds boring." Error grumbled, sinking down into the beanbag he liked to sit in shoulders up as he continued his work. You rolled your eyes standing up to put your book back in the little pile you had by your bed.
"It's not like I have a lot of other things to do here in the anti void." You gently poked fun at him looking out into the white nothingness. It seemed fuller with your things here now and error with you but still it was vast and seemingly had no end.
Error just grumbled, seeming to agree but didn't want to actually admit he thought you were right as he continued his work. You wanted to get closer and take a peek at the doll he was making today but knew better than to get too close. It looked different from all the others so far, it seems the ones he likes to makes are the other variants of sans but the one he's creating right now seems nothing like a sans.
You always wondered why he crochets, for a being that's supposed to be nothing but destruction he was quite creative and loved creating new things with his favorite hobby. Though you've never been brave enough to ask.
"Do you ever wonder what it would be like if you lived in another AU instead of here in the anti void?" Your sudden question just blurted out of your mouth. In all fairness it made sense you were just thinking about the variants of sans, but for anyone outside of your mind it seemed very random.
Error casted a side glare and you feared for a moment that you may of said the wrong thing as he slowly looked away seemingly clenching his jaw.
"Yes." Short sweet to the point. Error's tone made you know not to press the subject further, and so you didn't. You just hummed in reply and walked around a bit looking at everything around you. This was home now, even though it shouldn't be it was. But did error consider you home now too or just a friend? You'd think pest if it wasn't for the fact he agreed to be your friend.
You sighed at the thought gazing at the dolls error strung up of his alternate counter parts. They were all so different even if they all had some similar things about them. You remember seeing these for the first time, and your mind wandered back to that lonely one.
The sans farthest from the others all alone, the most notable thing about him being the red of his scarf and the gash across his chest. He seemed so lonely. Even now thinking about him he feels so incredibly lonely. Instinctively you walked towards the dolls passing them as they were strung up on the wall in search of that red and white one. Seeing him faintly in the back, hand out stretched reaching just going to grab him.
"What are you doing?" Error was behind you, startling you enough to let out a small shriek of terror jumping back, or what felt like 10 feet in the air, before catching your breath.
"You scared me-" you sighed pressing your hands to your chest before turning to look for that sans doll. He was gone now.
"What are you doing, (Y/N)?" Error emphasized his words making you realize maybe you over stepped a boundary now.
"I just wanted to see the things you made I thought they were cute." You offered a nervous smile but your heart was slamming in your ribs with a bit of fear. After all he still scares you.
Error seemed to think about your words, eye sockets narrowing like he didn't believe you, until finally he arrived to a conclusion he liked and scoffed.
"Cute." He echoed your word back to you with a sarcastic laugh.
"They're anomalies they aren't cute!"
He huffed and marched away expecting you to follow, and of course you did the fear now gone. There he goes again, calling everything but him an anomaly. Why? Why does he think he's the normal one and anything else isn't? You'd ask but you don't want to risk another out burst, you've been doing a good job keeping him under control.
"What ever you say, you're the boss" you hummed quietly taking a comfortable seat on the floor with crossed legs next to errors bean bag. You looked up at him expectingly, hoping he'd sit down but instead he just stared at you, face slowly turning a bright blue until he snatched his chair and slid it just a bit farther from you before he took his seat.
You shrugged it off waiting for him to create that weird portal thing again so the two of you could watch his favorite show. You still don't know the name of it or how there were subtitles in mid air when they were all speaking Spanish but you were invested enough. It was just a soap opera but even those could hook someone into it.
The show started like always, and while the dramatic music played filling the normally quite void with noise you couldn't help but feel something was wrong. Like someone was watching you. At first you thought it was error, but he wasn't paying attention, hand reached in another portal to grab a chocolate bar eyes glued to the show.
You guessed you were just paranoid after error gave you a small bit of a fright. After all, nothing can watch you from in here since error keeps an eye on his own place. Still this felt almost like the calm before the storm. And while you kept trying to reassure yourself that everything was okay enough, your soul felt otherwise. Cracking with a glitch unbeknownst to you or error.
