Tokyo Ghoul OP Analysis

So, if anyone has watched Mother's Basement, I'll be taking a page from him today and analyse Tokyo Ghoul the best I can...

Props to the Director, Studio Pierrot and TK from wherever he was, for creating an amazing OP.

Now, let's analyse the song in detail. (Song in media)

So, at the beginning, we have Kaneki, alone, sitting in the chair, alone in a sky. This is clever, as it represents his loneliness in the series as he's the only Half Ghoul-half human. The sky will nicely connect the ending and the start of the opening, as at the end, the sky background is used. Him sitting on the chair is probably alluding to the torture he got from Yamori or Jason (I honestly don't know what his name is anymore) at the end of the series.

Then we get a close up to his face. It looks grim and hair is covering his eyes. This can be taken in many ways, like he's given up (alluding to him giving in to his Ghoul side) or his sadness, and we just feel bad to him.

Next we get Touka, facing to the left, just there. This seems a bit random, but it's purpose is to establish she'll be important to the plot.

Then, we get Rize, who is facing towards us, eyes closed. When she opens her eyes and shatters the screen, this represents her shattering Kaneki's world, cause if it weren't for her and Kano, he wouldn't be half human-half Ghoul.

We get a drum roll-guitar bit going through the characters quickly, one after another, in both human and Ghoul form while the background is a city, which makes sense as Tokyo is a city, and Tokyo Ghoul is the name of the anime.

We then get Tokyo Ghoul's logo as the screen repairs itself slowly. While this is a stretch, I say it represents Kaneki just recovering for now.

Next, Kaneki is seen walking around slowly, looking slightly worried yet trying to look strong. This is probably to show him trying to keep his facade as human, most likely for his best friend, Hide. He somewhat looks at us, the viewer, but walks away. The mirrored image of him isn't as strongly shown as the other characters, maybe that's to show that his Ghoul powers are lessened than the others.

We then get Touka staring at herself image. In the mirrored image, her Kakugan is activated and this shows us that a Ghoul has two sides to them. Why she's staring in herself is probably cause at the end, she rethinks about her choices and decides to go to Kami, Kaneki's old collage, cause ya know, we gotta have one tsundere herp derp

As for Uta, his hand is on his tattoo, which is Greek for... Well, I don't remember haha... But it means something about ghouls, as I think it's about trust... I'm not sure, you can google it. While it doesn't do much, the use of mirrors give us a sense of what Uta is watching. The street empty, and just an apartment block. This could allude to him going out to kill for food, or just watching the city peacefully as he used to be a tough guy in the 3rd or 4th Ward. (I forget.)

We have Yomo looking out. This is to represent him looking out for Doves for Anteiku.

Next is Nishiki. He's in a casual pose looking out with a slightly angered face. His casual pose is to symbolise his human facade, and his angered face is for Kaneki, who had the nerve to beat the horsecrap outta him. (As Nishiki would say, HORSECRAP!)

Tsukiyama follows with a sly face, with his hand covered his eye so we can't see his Kakugan in the mirror. This shows that he hid away the fact that he was a Ghoul from Kaneki and can be symbolic to him hiding the truth about what he was going to do with Kaneki. However, we can guess he could be a Ghoul, with the lot of coffee related items that look like they could also be in a restaurant, which also alludes that he is one of the refined taste ghouls. Also, he's sitting at a chair and table, like how he and Kaneki met.

Ah, Hide. He goes walking down an escalator with a bummed out face, probably cause he hasn't seen Kaneki in while.

Then we have Mado walking down a hallway, similar to the CCG Office hallways, which can allude to the fact he's a CCG member. (Carrying that big silver case is a big giveaway aswell.) He looks less insane then usual but ready to kill neverthe.

We then get Amon looking out to the city with an angry face, to show his anger for ghouls and his personality slightly.

Next we got Rize infront of a city. Something pops out behind her back, which is similar to her kagune, except it's more akin to Ukaku rather than her Rinkaku. In it, we see dark reds, to represent the colour of her kagune possibly, or the blood on her hands, and dark purples, and most importantly, red flowers. These flowers are seen when Kaneki becomes edgy for his own good when Rize has the talk with him. (I'd also like to add that her face is quite neutral, something I don't think Rize has done in this series)

Touka appears next, and to honest, I'm not even sure why that scene was there. The most I can make out is that it's Ukaku kagune.

Then, we get Kaneki falling from the sky, to represent his drop from being human, to Ghoul, and him to giving into his Ghoul side. Coming closer to him is a masked Kaneki with a kakugan activated, the so called Ghoul side to him. When the two merge, (so the human and Ghoul side) it ends up with his Kanedgy mode, the white haired Kaneki, now standing up with a grim face, no longer worried, sad, angered, whatever, which represents the end of what Kaneki had happened to him. After the torture, he gave in, and this is all that's left of Kaneki. A bittersweet note for a brilliant OP.

Whoo, that was HARD. (That's what she said)

Analysis is quite hard tbh, and I applaud anyone who can analyse better than me... Cause lemme tell ya, you guys are good XD

That's all, Fox out!
