The Beginning of the End
"If you knew today was your last day on earth, how would you spend it?"
The nurse looked up from her clipboard at the patient lying comfortably in the cot.
"Mister Park-
"My name is Jimin... Mister Park makes me sound like a boring grown up" The boy with mochi like cheeks whined.
The nurse smiled slyly and thought about breaking into a rant about how "not all grown ups are boring" but instead placed her clipboard on the table and leaned over Jimin.
"Well, alright then. Jimin." She winked
Jimin looked at her intently, his young bright eyes gleaming with interest.
"Our last days on earth will not arrive for a long time."
Jimin looked disappointed and scoffed.
"But"
"If today was my last day..." The nurse looked around, checking for any unwanted eavesdroppers.
"I'd want to-
The clipboard fell off the table suddenly, the pages scattering across the floor. Jimin sat up. The nurse, startled, quickly shuffled all the papers together before smiling sheepishly at the upright Jimin.
They both laughed nervously.
Jimin glanced at a loose paper by the door. He squinted as it slowly began to dampen, the black ink showing through the now soaked paper.
The nurse, Jennie, also noticed the paper, which was now floating out of the room on what seemed to be a thin layer of brackish water.
The second rumble came suddenly, jolting Jimin forward and wiping all the items from the beside table. Hand sanitizer, pens, paperwork, and cotton swobs littered the floor.
Jimin was scared, and so was Jennie. He could feel how scared Jennie was, he could smell it. Jennie looked to Jimin, as if the 8 year old boy could help her understand what to do. Her hands shook. Her pager beeped.
Code Grey
"What does Code Grey mean?" Jimin asked worriedly, his eyes no longer glowing with curiosity but burning with fear.
"I..I-Uh it means Tsunami..." her words came out slurred. She snapped her eyes to meet Jimin's. She was only 21, but she had to get this boy to safety, no matter what happened to her.
"What are you doing?" Jimin questioned the nurse as she removed the IV from his arm and wrapped a piece of tape of the cotton pad stuffing the blood.
She took a breath.
"Saving your life."
She turned around.
"I'm going to have to carry you, and this is the only way I can move quickly with you, so hop on Jimin."
Jimin listened to the woman's orders and wrapped his sluggish legs around her waist and clasped his tiny fingers around her chest.
"Hold on tight."
Jennie fled the room, looking left to right, unsure of where to take him. She thought quickly and out loud.
"At risk patients are taken away by helicopter..."
Jimin struggled to stay latched as Jennie ran up multiple staircases. The lights flickered and a sound emitted through the loudspeakers.
"All non essential staff are to evacuate immediately, all high risk patients are to be taken to the roof for extraction."
Jennie hauled ass up the stairs, taking them two at a time despite her short legs. Jimin took a moment to examine Jennie from his perspective. She smelled of sweat and mint leaves, but also of chocolate and vanilla. He saw the tattooed initials just under the name of neck, J+(Your first Initial) and the an English word directly beneath it.
A rush of wind, debris, water, and feathers hit Jennie in the face after she opened the door, which had swung open after a simple turn of the handle. She staggered back, pushing Jimin's back against the stair railing.
Jimin looked down the 25 sets of stairs and felt liquid and bile fill his mouth. He turned back to Jennie's sweaty neck.
Jennie pushed forward and trudged towards the helicopter, which was close to being filled to capacity. Jennie let Jimin slide off her back.
"Jimin, I can't- I need you to run as fast as you can to that man over there." She pointed to a buff man in dark blue scrubs and a bright yellow and orange vest.
"Hey"
Jimin faced Jennie, her face had sweat dripping down to her chin, cuts on her forehead, and feathers in her hair. But she was smiling.
"If today was my last day on earth, I would like to think I saved a life. Do something great, and live your life to the fullest Park Jimin."
She pushed him towards the helicopter and yelled at him to go. Jimin stumbled and ran to the helicopter and the buff man in the blue scrubs.
A/N: Ahhh, 8 year old Chim 😔. Anyways, Idk where this is heading, but I'm excited 😳. This'll be shorter than anything I've ever written or anything I'm currently working on.
