Aiden's Point of View
"Where is she now" Aiden growls through the mindlink as he presses his foot harder against the gas. He'd do anything to shift into his wolf but knew there would be no returning if the people of Norhaven saw.
The entire wolf community would be hunted to extinction and despite the idea of the Everdale wolves being slaughtered, he knew there were other packs around the world who were innocent.
"She's five kilometres from the border" One of the scouts immediately responds.
"Shit" Aiden mutters, as he quickly overtakes another car. There's a long beep in return but he knew none of the humans would dare to confront him.
"Would you like us to intervene?" another scout asks.
Aiden weaves through the highway, his entire body taut with angst. He wanted the scouts to step in but knew Elizabeth would assume it was a rogue wolf and panic. Which would only make the situation worse.
"No" he informs, "But continue to watch her".
Aiden didn't know what he would do if Elizabeth crossed the border, he knew Henry would use this to his advantage and couldn't stand the idea of his mate being held prisoner.
After everything that had happened between them, he didn't realise how fragile her trust in him was. He should never have taken her for granted and now he was paying for the consequences.
Elizabeth's Point of View
The image of Jasmine kissing Aiden continues to burn in her mind as she turns right onto the highway, leading her to the only person that would ever understand her feelings.
How could she have been so stupid. Henry had warned her over, and over again and yet she'd chosen Aiden, someone who'd she known for less than a minute.
Lizzie slams her heard back against the headrest, groaning in frustration. She had been so gullible, allowing Aiden into her life, falling in love and trusting him just to have it thrown right back into her face. All that crap about being the person destined to be with him, his mate.
She should've realized that once a player always a player.
Lizzie wipes away her loose tears as she pushes her accelerator down further as it changes to a new speed limit. The faster she got to Henry's, the sooner she would feel safe.
But an unsettling thought creeps into her mind,
Would Henry be happy to see her? Would he even want to see her?
After their last conversation, Henry had expressed that Lizzie was his enemy. Was this still the case if Lizzie had broken things off with Aiden.
Her throat constricts at the thought as a rush of tears well to the surface.
She blinks them away as she grips the steering wheel, Aiden had destroyed their future. With that one kiss he had given away his one chance to be with her.
The screech of a wheels gains her attention as she looks in her rear-view mirror. Her heart lurches into her throat as an unmistakable silver car turns onto the highway.
There was still enough distance between them but Lizzie knew that Aiden's fancy new car would overtake her parents one in a matter of minutes.
She didn't want to see him, hear his excuses, watch him beg for forgiveness.
The engine revs as Lizzie presses her foot harder against the accelerator. Why did he care anyway that she was leaving.
Isn't this what he wanted? Her gone so he could be with Jasmine, or did he want the best of both worlds, Lizzie by his side to ensure the strength of the pack and Jasmine to be available for when he tired of her.
The thought made Lizzie sick.
She speeds past a sign that reads "Wiltershire in 1 mile". Hope begins to spread through her body.
She knew that Wiltershire was the land between the Norhaven and Everdale packs. To enter would send alerts to the Everdale pack and would be considered an act of war.
She prayed that Aiden wouldn't risk it. His actions had shown her that she wasn't worth it.
Aiden's car begins to gain distance, that Lizzie pushes the accelerator down further. Fear clutches her heart as she switches between watching Aiden in the rearview mirror and watching her speedometer creep up to an unsettling pace.
Her efforts are futile as she watches as Aiden's car speeds up behind her, close enough that she can see Aiden's hardened face in the mirror.
Another sign appears indicating that Wiltershire was the next exit. Lizzie flicks her eyes back to Aiden only to see that he'd move out of his seat and was flinging the car door open. Lizzie can do nothing but watch in fear as Aiden leaps from the car shifting into his wolf mid-air before landing on the ground and immediately into a sprint.
Lizzie squashes her rising anxiety as Aiden's gigantic wolf sprints behind her car. She knew there was less than a mile but the chances of Lizzie making it across the border were close to zero.
Her foot hesitates on the accelerator, maybe she could find a way to break the mate bond if Aiden forced her back to Everdale. She still had Henry's number and she knew he'd be willing to help, if he picked up the phone.
A growl interrupts Lizzie's thoughts, as she covers her mouth in shock to watch as another wolf lunges at Aiden pinning him to the ground.
She immediately slams on the brakes, watching in the rearview mirror. Despite her anger she wouldn't allow Aiden to be killed not by a rogue wolf. Especially since he'd saved her life.
The wolf was definitely bigger than Aiden and older but it didn't appear to look like a rogue. It begins to dawn on Lizzie that it must be his Father. The only wolf in the pack who could enforce Aiden to let her go.
Without wasting another second, Lizzie slams her foot back on the accelerator. Aiden was safe, there was no point giving his Father the opportunity to change his mind.
Aiden's melancholy howl pierces the air as she finally crosses the border. Lizzie goes to turn on the radio, trying to block the sound out and reminding herself that this was the only option.
Aiden's Point of View
Pinned against the ground, Aiden attempts to fight against his Father's order, the invisible force that enforced that Aiden remain pressed against the road until his Father released him. Unable to fight off his Father and continue chasing Elizabeth.
He was so close, another second and he would've been running alongside Elizabeth. He knew that she'd begun hesitating as soon as he shifted, the speed of the car slowing slightly, as if she was beginning to doubt her decision to leave.
"Are you serious" Aiden's Father growls as continue to press Aiden against the road.
Aiden ignores the small cuts to his fur as he tries again with every pore in his body to fight against the order, but his efforts were futile. His Father was still Alpha, he still outranked Aiden in every aspect. Until he mated, he had no choice but to obey his Father's orders.
He turns his head slightly, the most he could do under his Father's orders, as he watches his soul-mate drive right into the hands of his enemy. His mind-link ability was silenced otherwise he would've ordered very wolf to stop her.
Her scent still lingered in the air and with it came an overwhelming urge to ignore the consequences and follow Elizabeth as soon as his Father released him.
He should never have trusted Kat with Elizabeth, this was the second time she had failed him. But he had never expected that it would come to this.
He thought their relationship was going well, every time he was with her she seemed happy. They shared their first kiss just the other night, and she was comfortable with their relationship that she'd already arranged to stay the night after the ball.
For Elizabeth to jump to conclusions so quickly meant that she still didn't trust him completely. How could she ever think that Aiden would cheat on her again? Hadn't he proven that he loved her.
It obviously hadn't been enough.
"You will not follow Elizabeth" His Father commands directing his attention.
A growl erupts through Aiden but it's silenced before it can be expressed.
He could feel the eyes of his pack watching him but none of them dared interfere. He knew that if Donovan or Jack stepped in they would be stripped of their title and spend the rest of their lives in the pack prison.
"You will return to the packhouse with me and we will discuss how to salvage this situation"
Lizzie was not a situation. She was his mate.
The love of his life and he refused leave her with Henry in enemy lands.
