THE MYSTERY BOX
>Nina POV<
I was walking from the grocery store, bags in hand, when I spotted an unfamiliar cardboard box on the hood of my precious black Volvo with red leather interior.
As I got closer, I saw the box shifting and heard the distinctive mewls of distressed kittens. My eyes widened drastically.
Why?
Because of the supernatural heat of Texas, leaving any animal out in the smoldering heat for too long is sure homocide. And who knows how long the poor things have been out!
I dropped my bags beside my car and grabbed the box. I didn't bother looking inside as I put them in my car and turned on the AC before I loaded my groceries into the back seat.
I sighed, wiping my brow with the back of my hand as I settled into the drivers seat and shut the door. I closed my eyes and enjoyed the AC for a moment before glancing sideways at the box.
With out a word I brought the box into my lap and blinked in slight confusion at what I saw. Inside the box were many multi colored kittens all staring back at me with wide, curious eyes. Most of them seemed to be paired up in their own little duos scattered around in the box.
A light blue one with a flower behind its ear and amber eyes sat properly next to an alpha postured neon orange with countless black dots on its tiny body and purple eyes.
A larger bluish grey one with three dark blue lines diagonally on each side of its neck sat beside a shaggy haired pitch black one with a diagonal line on either side of its nose.
A slick silver one with magenta eyes sat lazily beside a grey one with black, stitch-like lines wrapping around it and red and green eyes.
Then there was a black, scruffy furred kit with an orange face sitting next to a long haired, blonde kitten with an ear bent over its left eye, who in turn was seated next to a red kitten with short fur and dull brown eyes.
Finally, a half black, half white kitten with yellow eyes and extra scruffy fur sitting all by himself.
I was weirded out, especially with them staring back at me with an impossibly human like intelligence sparking in their weirdly colored eyes.
We stared at each other a bit longer before I sighed and sat them back in the passenger seat beside me, deciding that I had no other choice but to bring them home with me. I started the car and began driving the thrifty five minutes to my home.
The guards, as usual, stopped me at the gate and asked a question to make sure I was me. I, as usual, answered with a silent stare. They nodded to each other, knowing it was me, and opened the large iron gates to allow me to drive another seven minutes up my hill before I reached my house.
Well, it's more of a mansion than a house. Two stories, sixty nine different rooms, and a whole lot of extra space. When my parents sill lived here they would always be throwing parties and stuff and letting the guests stay the night, but now that they have moved to Florida I'm all alone to wander the empty building by myself. I don't let people in, unless it's my small group of friends.
I parked my car in its usual spot before grabbing the box in one hand and carrying my grocery bags in my other. I had to set down the bags for a moment to unlock my door and push it open before picking them back up and entering my home, shutting the door behind me with my foot.
I know what you're probably thinking.
If she's so rich why doesn't she have servant and stuck to help her?
Well it's because I do not like most people so I got rid of them all. All except the guards at the bottom gates. They come in handy when thieves and mercenaries they to get to me. Sure, the guards are incompetent fools, but all their panicking and yelling warns me fast enough that I can grab my hand gun to defend myself.
I stopped in my huge living room: a room the size of two living rooms combined; black carpet; a white over sized couch that could easily hold twenty people with room to spare in the shape of half a circle; a 164" flat screen tv on one of the walls; and a large, white, round coffee table table that entered the curve of my couch just enough that it could be used as a foot stool, but still leave plenty of leg room. I set the box on the table before heading to my excessively large kitchen to put away groceries.
