Chapter 30. 'faith' is a fine invention
Y/n stared out the window and saw the carriage that had been visiting her for a while. She ran down the stairs, no other noise was made. Her dress has changed from a black dress to a blue dress that goes down to silver with off the shoulder sleeves, and flowers designs going up from the bottom of the dress. And flower design along the silk bodice of the dress.
Her hair was done flowing down her back with a gold pin holding a section of her hair up in a bun. She walked towards the black carriage, the shadowy horses that pull the carriages neighed as they saw her.
She smiled and walked past them, her hand tracing over their shadowy white hair. "You know you can't touch them" a voice said as the door opened by an invisible hand.
"I know, but one day I might" she looked towards the figure. "Miss Y/n Gilbert or Miss Y/n Dickinson" Y/n ears turned a scarlet Red.
"I am fine staying a Gilbert, someone has to carry on the Gilbert bloodline, after my sister has now turned her back on it" Y/n said dramatically, as she enters the carriage, she sits down directly across from death.
"So how is my favourite Gilbert" Death asked, his arms outstretched before crossing them "my sister is going to get married to Austin" she said
"ohh sad romance between two lovers how tragic" Death spoke. The carriage began to move, Y/n looked out at the now dark sky as the trees slowly faded into water. "The tragedy of the Gilbert Sisters. family dead. Sister marrying into the Dickinsons. Your lover becoming your sister in law." Death listed
"Yes I get it, I'm the tragic Gilbert sister, Is this all you came here for?" She asked looking towards him over her shoulder, waving him off.
"No actually, I came here for company, do you know how boring it gets just waiting for people to die, then you know how stressful it gets when millions of people die" Death complains as Y/n listens
"So you came to voice your problems?" She asks tilting her head to the left slightly, brows frowned, as he nods "yeah ethier that or just to enjoy your company whilst we travel across the country road" Death suggests
"Why didn't you just go see Emily?" Y/n asks looking out at the window. "She is being really mopey at the moment, it's so downing" Y/n looks at him confused "Emily's not a downer, she is normal happy" Death shook his head.
"Do you know she hasn't seen me in ages" Y/n nodded as she moved her head off her palm, to look at Death.
"What's on your mind, little bird?" The two always had to do bird Nicknames; Emily with Songbird. And Death with little bird. "Do you remember, the conversation we had in Boston?" She asked playing around with her fingers.
"Yes, cause that girl was mopey as, without you. All I heard was 'can you talk to Y/n?' 'Tell me how she's going?' 'Can you bring her back?' it was so boring." He looked up to the girl across from him "no offence." He said as she gave the man a "are you done" look.
"Until she started talking about that Newton man..Ben Newton. You know him?" Y/n nodded trying not to convey how much she didn't like their relationship but nothing slips past death.
"Ohh, you're jealous of their relationship." The man nodded seeing the hurt look that flashes through her eyes. He laughed a little. "so your mind is racing full of doubt?"
"You are very little comfort" Y/n stated, looking at him with a glare as he shrugged his shoulders "am I meant to be?" Y/n shook her head and laughed. Y/n then listened to the horse hooves. "so will he die?.." Y/n asked slowly.
She didn't want Emily to be in any pain, if he did. Death let out a low chuckle "I can't tell you that, Birdy" the carriage slowed down by The Dickinson's house, before coming to a full stop. "Goodbye, Miss Gilbert" Death spoke, extending a hand out for the girl to take as he opened the door. She step down the rather large step and into the ground below.

Emily and Y/n sat next to each other in church, they listened as the man droned on about the practice of religion, how God was watching over them and death and other things one would talk about in a church.
The room was silent as the Priest walked and explained how they could get into the gates of heaven, and the shadows of heaven and hell. How to practice the act of dying. Mrs Dickinson stared ahead as she listened intently to man. Lavinia turned around at glanced at her boyfriend. Y/n felt envious of that, don't get her wrong she hated Joseph, he literally tried to date her a few years ago. Way before Emily and herself were dating. But she adored Lavinia, but she felt envious of the fact they could be out in public and could be seen.
Y/n wanted that, but she knew she could never have it. Y/n didn't even mean to, she didn't even realise that her finger moved towards Emily's pinky. Emily's breath hitched as Emily interlinking their Pinky's together.
Her head still turned towards the window, Emily thought about her time with Ben, and with Y/n but her mind was conflicted, she loved Y/n with every inch of her being, the sun could explode and the last thing her mind would go to is Y/n.
But she also loved Ben, she really did. She loved every moment they have had together so far.
"And I hope you all are going to see today's annular eclipse of the sun." Emily zoned back into man talking. She let go of Y/n's pinky the moment Lavinia looked at her sister, smiling. The girl was so excited for the eclipse, she could burst.
"In God's name we pray, amen." His voice traveled to every point in the church. "Amen" Everyone's voice sounded out bouncing of the walls. Emily zoned out, only snapping back into it when her sister nudged her. She blinked twice, not seeing Y/n next to her. "Where's-" Lavinia pointed to the church doors, cutting Emily off before she could finish "outside"
Emily stood up, about to take a step towards the church doors when.."Emily, Dear come over here" Her mother called her over to talk to the priest.
-----
Y/n traveled down the stairs of the church she jumped the last few steps not expecting to land funnily on her left foot, her ankle felt a sharp pain, stumbling straight into someone's back. She shook of the haze and immediately started apologing. The person has stumbled a bit forward, they turned around fixing their coat jacket. Y/n stood up quickly "I've had a bit of a habit running into people, I'm so sorry"
The man smiled, a bit perplexed by the apologizing mess that stood in front of him. "Do not worry, I just happened to be in the way" Y/n laughed, she had never met a man that was quick to take the blame then this man right here. Well maybe except for Ben. The girl studied the man's face, he had blue eyes and black hair that framed his face perfectly.
"Y/n!!" Mrs Dickinson's voice traced to Y/n's ears making the girl turn around, wincing a bit when her left leg took on weight. The man- which right now he still lacked a name- quickly moved besides her letting her lean again him to take pressure of her foot. The older women let out a excited gasp "oh so you have met Dallas Peters" the women smiled from ear to ear, it was a surprise her teeth didn't break with how wide her smile was. Emily trialled behind her mother her eyes locked on the man currently hold Y/n up.
"Yes but I hadn't gotten his name" she started to move but quickly beconned Emily over, placing her arm over Emily's should she was able to move to greet the man properly. "Y/n Gilbert, Daughter of Thomas and Harriet Anna Gilbert" Y/n smiled, nodding her head a little.
"See Emily that's how you impress a suitor, you could learn so much" Emily stiffened under Y/n's arms. Mrs Dickinson took the path back towards the house, Dallas in tow.
The two stood in front of the church in silence, waiting until the other one broke first
"Em I can't walk well right now" that sentence snapped Emily out of her gaze of mixed emotions. There walk was slow mainly because Emily didn't want to go home. They ended up sitting on the grass for a small while. Whilst Emily passed around and Y/n rested. Once the did make it home, it wasn't Emily in the seat of suitors, it was Y/n.
Y/n sat in front of the man, as Emily asked questions "why is Y/n getting a suitor?"
"Because you clearly are never getting married so Y/n is out best choice"
Emily's questions could fill a whole book.
Y/n wouldn't admit outloud but the man was quite handsome, and she would marry him, but she couldn't her heart belonged to Emily, or at least she thinks it does. Sue's words from a few weeks ago ring in her ears again. "does she?"
"Um Y/n we should get ice for your ankle" Emily pulled her out of the living room carefully and towards the kitchen. "Em-" Y/n started but was interrupted by Emily's pacing. "Emily!" Y/n took a breath.
"Do you love Ben?" Emily's head snapped towards her. "What?"
"Do you love Ben?" She asked again, the question had been answered under different circumstances whilst they were in the bedroom, but standing in the kitchen it needed to be out. "Yes." The words left Emily's lips and hit the girl like a horse drawn carriage. "Okay
" Y/n swallowed thickly
"Do you love m-" the words didn't even have to be finished before Emily's lips were against hers "yes. more then there are stars in the sky, yes"
"Then let me do this one thing for you. And you do this one thing for me."
Emily pulled away and shook her head. "I will not. If it's selfish of me to say so then let me be selfish. Let me have this for as long as I can." Emily pulled at things from her brain that would make her songbird forget that man. "We married" she whispered, the silence of the kitchen was deafening. Emily played with the ring on her finger. "We did." Her voice broke. Emily had broke. The idea of Y/n leaving her broke her alone.
"Em, you can marry Ben, why are you so against me marrying someone els-"
"Because you left me for eight months, you went to Boston, didn't write and then you come back and now you want to leave me again and you act like it hasn't been hard for me. I couldn't talk to you, touch you, kiss you, feel you, you were a ghost, I missed you so bad and my brain made you up, you followed me everywhere, and all i wanted to do was look at you, or hold you, and it drove me insane not being able to do that!...I couldn't breath not being able to be near you. And if you went away again. i wouldn't be able to now." The silence came again before being cut off by the slam of a door and then Y/n was left by herself in an empty kitchen. It was a the rise before the storm.
