The price for his sins committed by hose pipe.
"Seriously! Can you believe it? Detention for a week!" Noah complained loudly, again, as the two roommates and Callie walked towards the cafeteria for breakfast. Kurin groaned softly, when they'd gotten back to their dorm last night after working on their music class project with Crystal, Noah had started loudly protesting the punishment he'd gotten for all the trouble he, Julia, Paul and Felix had caused yesterday afternoon during their little water fight. Well, little is an understatement. The outdoors area had still been flooded when they were walking back to the dorm block yesterday evening. Even so, Noah had been complaining about his punishment ever since he'd received it.
Callie, for her part, seemed a lot more interested than Kurin was; she laughed amusedly, "I mean I'm not surprised! You guys got caught by Coach Short!" She snickered, "And you absolutely drenched him with that hose. You should've seen him last night when he was on cafeteria duty Noah, he was so pissed off!" She told him. "Right, Kurin?"
The nonbinary nodded, "Absolutely." The three entered through the cafeteria doors and picked up their trays, "He was standing over there looking like a drowned rat and glaring at everyone, he yelled at multiple people at over nothing just because he was in a bad mood because of you four." They confirmed, pointing over to where Coach Short had stood in the corner the night before.
Their roommate shivered, "Now I'm glad I skipped dinner." He murmured, piling his plate up with breakfast until it nearly overflowed.
Once the three had sat down at the table, they began to swap stories about what they'd done the previous day after classes. Callie was halfway through telling the other two about what had happened in the library with Dan after Kurin had left when she was distracted by someone setting down their book and breakfast tray in the space beside where Kurin was sitting. "Fucking... Life is fun. Seriously?" Chet glared tiredly at the nonbinary like they were the cause of all the bad in the world as he sat down next to them. "Why?"
Noah blinked in confusion while Kurin and Callie cracked up laughing.
It was only when Kurin was done laughing when they glanced over at Chet and spotted the barely noticeable flicker of a smile that had made its way onto his face. They looked away pretending they hadn't noticed that Chet wasn't actually annoyed with the song suggestion they'd made for him and Dan the day before, their attention flickering down to Chet's book. "Oh, good choice in literature." They couldn't resist saying, "I love that series."
Chet looked down at the book, his tiny, near imperceptible smile growing slightly wider and more noticeable. "It's one of my favourites too, the author is incredible." He admitted.
"Have you read all of her books?" Kurin asked, almost embarrassingly eager for the chance to get to talk to someone else about their favourite book series.
If their excitement to talk about their favourite book series was obvious though, Chet didn't comment on it, choosing instead to answer Kurin's question. "Almost. I've just got to finish this one and read Nothing More to Tell and then I'll be finished with the series."
Kurin nodded, resisting the urge to tell Chet that he'd never be done with the series because he'd want to reread it before he even knew it. "Yeah, it's amazing. I was up until five am reading that one." They laughed, "Probably shouldn't have done that on a weekday, I mean it was totally worth it but I fell asleep in all my classes that day."
From across the table, Noah leaned over to look at the title of the book. "You'll be the Death of me..." He read out, "Wait, is this the powerful statement book?" He asked, grinning. "I remember waking up in the middle of the night to you laughing about powerful statements then when I asked about it you explained the brother of one of the main characters was asked to make a statement and put both of his middle fingers up in response!" He laughed.
Embarrassed, Kurin nodded. As much as they'd tried not to comment out loud when reading, especially not loudly, they'd failed quite a few times and woken up their roommate by laughing over parts in the book.
Callie blinked, "Wait I remember something like that happening too! Didn't you fall asleep in history class and when HB asked Julia to wake you up, you just mumbled something about powerful statements and went back to sleep?" She tilted her head, looking curiously at Kurin. They could see Chet trying to hold in a laugh.
"That would be the day." The book nerd grumbled.
Noah thought for a moment then returned to reminding Kurin of their late night book comments. "Oh and you were shipping those two guys.. What were their names? One of them didn't know who the other was at first, right? There was no heterosexual explanation for what you said they were going on a date all about replacing old toxicity with new positivity?"
Kurin raised their eyebrows and glanced pointedly towards the boy next to him in an attempt to remind Noah that Chet hadn't finished the book yet.
"Oh! And wasn't the art teacher someone's dad's new girlfriend?" Noah added suddenly.
The non-binary groaned, giving up. "Yeah and the guys were Cal and Ishaan, if they aren't dating then neither are Magnus, Dan and Ajit, that's how certain I am that they're dating."
Chet wrinkled his nose, looking confused. "Ishaan doesn't even know who Cal is?" He pointed out, ignoring the other blatant spoiler about the art teacher dating someone's dad.
"Not yet he doesn't." Kurin shot back. "You just haven't gotten to that part yet." They told Chet, smiling at him.
Always wanting to make one more joke, Noah shook his head, "No, that's not why! Chet's just too straight to catch onto the obvious gayness in the book." He snickered.
Kurin bit down on their tongue to stop themself from laughing, averting their eyes to look anywhere but at Chet, knowing if their eye contact continued they wouldn't be able to resist the urge to laugh. They heard Chet cough into his hand, "Uh, yeah.. Probably that." He concurred.
