Extra: Fujino 7 Inspiration

Hey y'all! Here's my inspiration chapter for the Fujino 7!! I decided to make them in the Sims so you guys could see sort of what I was thinking for their characters. I've included pictures for each person. Some of them are a little wonky, so I apologize. I'm not the best at modeling faces. It was mostly a matter of hair, eye color, build, and style, so the faces are a little messed up for some of them...whoops.

When coming up with characters, I figured I should think of at least two random things that each character has strong feelings about for no particular reason. I think it adds more authenticity to their personality. In Koto's case, I decided on a bunch of things, like her love for dancing and the beach and playing with bugs when she was younger. Same with her hatred of celery and dirt under her fingernails. There's no particular reason for these to be mentioned, other than to make her have depth as a person. So, I'll discuss "the extremes" of each character in these and the random things that they feel strongly about.

Ruri Fujino

When coming up with the Fujino family, I knew their parents weren't going to be around much, so I figured they needed to have the level headed sibling to keep the others in line. That's where I thought of Ruri. Now, I was considering her living somewhere else, given her age, but I think she has such a strong bond with her family that she wouldn't want to leave them unsupervised. Though none of them admit it, all seven children love having the others around. Even though Ruri knows she should be the one to strike out on her own first, she can't bring herself to do it. It's partly because of her love for her family, but also because she believes they would fall apart without her. Given that her quirk is foresight, she often prevents disasters caused by her youngest brothers.

I'll be honest, it took me a while to come up with their quirks, particularly the parents' so that each of the children's quirks would make sense as genetic mixtures between the two. It ultimately boiled down to four traits of which all the kids have some mixture: knowledge of language, knowledge of the future, ability to see something in their brain, and the ability to share their sight with others. In Ruri's case, she has a mixture of the "knowledge of the future" and "ability to see something in their brain."

She keeps their house as orderly as she can while allowing most shenanigans in The Garage to go unchecked. She respects her siblings' sacred space and will only intervene if somebody's about to get really hurt. As a child, she took after her mother, often caring for the other children. She's inherited her mother's rather dry sense of humor, something that distinguishes her from her very sarcastic, yet goofy siblings. A lot of the time, she'll make a joke and people won't be able to tell if she's being serious or not. At a very young age, she felt responsibility offer her siblings; something that gives her almost an unhealthy attachment and slight control issues.

Due to her quirk, she has many distractions and always has so many things happening in her head that she loses concentration very easily. For this reason, I made her sort of flighty. She can be so focused on what her quirk is telling her that she misses what's right in front of her face.

Ruri is a quirk therapist because she enjoys working with young children, even if they can be difficult sometimes.

She's reluctant to date anybody out of fear of losing the connection with her family. Sayuri has convinced her to go out on a couple dates, but they never end well. Either the guy is a total creep, or she spends the whole time worrying about her family and other things around them that she can't control. She believes that the perfect person will one day fall into her lap and they'll get married and live very close to home, but little does she know, he already has. In college, one of her friends was pining so hard for her, but she never saw that. After long enough of her not giving him the time of day, he walked away with a broken heart. She later made a comment that she wants to be with somebody like him and everybody would look at her in disbelief that she let him go without realizing her feelings. Maybe one day they'll get together or maybe she'll stay single forever. I haven't quite decided yet.

Her extremes include her love for her siblings (and all children), bees, and blazers. In her eyes, there's just something about putting on a freshly pressed blazer that makes her feel calm and in charge. She hates when her hair gets too long and gets extremely anxious while driving.

In my mind's eye, I see Ruri as an about average height woman, though she usually wears heels with her suits. She has her black hair like the rest of the family. Hers is cut into a short, angled bob. She has deep, stormcloud grey eyes.

Sayuri Fujino

Oh boy. Sayuri is sort of the target in her family. I feel like all large families have that one kid that gets picked on more than the others. Yeah, that's Sayuri in this sense.

I made her quirk a sort of mixture of the "knowledge of language" and "ability to see something in their brain." In her case, the knowledge of language refers to the way other people's brains process emotions. In a way, it's not too different from her mother's, in which she can tell what people will say before they say it. Her quirk is that she can read people's emotional auras, so she makes an amazing psychologist, but she tends to fall flat when it comes to the romance department.

Despite it being her main goal in life to fall in love and start a family, her relationships never work out. It often stems from her quirk. If she can constantly see what another person is feeling, not only will she overthink it, but even the good guys will feel like they can't read her. She wants to be open with somebody, but they never feel like they'll be equal since she has a window into their soul and they just have to believe whatever she tells them about her feelings. Also, due to her desperation for a stable relationship, she'll often go out of her way to please her boyfriend, making her seem easy and soft.

A lot of people take advantage of that. It doesn't help that her family teases her relentlessly. It's become sort of a tradition at this point to tease her. She often puts up a front that it doesn't bother her or reacts overdramatically to hide the fact that it breaks her heart for her family to treat her that way. Perhaps she feels as though if she can start a successful and living family, her own siblings will finally see her worth.

Her character is inspired by a person I know who goes through very similar struggles and gets no reassurance from her family.

Sayuri's extremes are her desire to be validated and her love of seafood. She once entered an oyster eating competition. She didn't do particularly well, but she got to enjoy a bunch of free oysters, so she was happy with the outcome. She hates the feeling of dry skin and artificial grape flavors.

I see Sayuri as a woman with long, expertly styled hair that is ombre at the ends. She has the same dark grey eyes as her sister. She often wears makeup to highlight her features. She got Ruri into makeup when she started her job, though she barely wears any. Some mornings, Sayuri does Ruri's eyeliner cause she's too focused on other things to keep her own hand steady.

Yasu Fujino

So, I thought of Yasu as sort of the quintessential cooler older brother. He's somebody that generally gets along with most people.

He decided against going to college, instead choosing to live out his dream of becoming a musician. He plays a couple instruments and sings. His favorite is the acoustic guitar because it makes him feel relaxed.

I decided his quirk would be the same as his father's, a mixture between "ability to see something in their brain" and "ability to share their sight with others." This results in his quirk of Mental Blueprinting. He doesn't really use it, though I figured he'd use it to tell stories to his younger siblings when they were little.

During the day, he sees the kids home from school and overall takes care of the house while his sisters are at work. He definitely has a mischievous side that his little brothers feed off of. When executing their "experiments" he's usually the one to turn a blind eye unless they're actually dangerous. I originally had him building stuff in The Garage with his brothers, but decided against it in the end. Instead, I decided he would have taught his brothers to use most of the basic tools in The Garage, but they took it to a whole new level. They, in particular, make him extremely proud.

I remember thinking that he would have a love of gardening, not for any particular reason other than he finds it relaxing. I guess that's one of his extremes along with his love for music. He taught himself to cook out of pure necessity. Personally, he hates anything dairy; it's too rich for him and he doesn't enjoy the flavor.

In my mind, Yasu has a bit darker of a complexion, due to his excessive time outside. His hair is shaved on the sides while the top is slicked back. A couple of the front strands are usually dyed a bright color. At the moment, it's purple(though it's not in the picture). He already has crinkles at the edges of his grey eyes from squinting in the sun.

Kayda Fujino

Kayda is an extremely hardworking person, but she often feels like there's too much pressure on her to follow in her father's footsteps. This sometimes makes her irritable. She does genuinely enjoy working for her father and likes the path she's on, but she wishes she didn't have to only be a student or an employee. All she wants for once is to be treated like his daughter. She desperately wants more time to work on art as well.

She was believed to not have a quirk, but hers is just mental. She is one of the children to only have one aspect of her parents' quirks, the "ability to see something in her brain," resulting in her Internal Blueprinting. She learned to sketch out the blueprints she can see in her head, but it quickly evolved into her intense love for art.

Whenever she's stressed from work, drawing or painting helps to calm her down, but she often has too much to do to "waste time." Along with that, she's never been confident enough in her art to pursue that.

In school, she doesn't really interact with other people, giving her the label of "loner." She doesn't interact with her family much either, but she actually enjoys it when she has time to. Her personality is fairly aloof, yet she gets snippy at times and makes snide remarks. She's very good at getting under people's skin and bringing to light the things they're most self conscious about. However, she's not an inherently mean person; she won't do these things unless somebody has sufficiently pissed her off.

She's the type of person who always has to be doing something with her hands. As she's thinking, she'll often find herself doodling on the margins of her paper or on her skin. Her favorite backpack is white canvas, but you'd never know underneath all of the pen drawings. I imagine her to be a more irritable sort of Rapunzel if that makes any sense.

As far as her appearance goes, she keeps her black hair back in a sleek ponytail all the time so it can't get in her face, but she can still fiddle with it. She cuts her own bangs so that they never get too long and get in her eyes. She's fallen into an endless cycle in that way. Her hands and arms always have some faded doodles scattered about on them.

Kayda's extremes are her love of art, seafoam green, and cats as well as her hatred of pop music and a strange fear of monkeys.

Reina Fujino

I thought of Reina sort of spur-of-the-moment. I knew I wanted a person who understood sign language to be the first person Koto met when she moved to Japan, but I also wanted her to be friends with Uraraka. I figured that Uraraka would still have friends in elementary school that she keeps in touch with, so I thought it'd make sense to feature one of them.

As I've continued writing, I've grown to love Reina's family and their overall essence. I was writing her character for a while before I realized I needed to think of her family, so it took me a while to come up with all their quirks after thinking of Reina's. I spent the better part of an afternoon drawing up genetic diagrams to first figure out her parents' quirks so that they would make sense to produce hers, then come up with a ton of other combinations for her siblings. Her quirk was another of the ones that only stems from one aspect of their parents', just the "knowledge of language."

I wanted to write more about her quirk in the book, to sort of clarify some things, but I couldn't figure out where to put that. Basically, I just wanted to state that she can't just speak any language she wants; she needs to hear it first. Think of her quirk like Monoma's but with languages. If she hears somebody speaking another language, she immediately understands the words they're using, so she can only use those in conversation now. If she's never heard somebody talking about space travel in German, she doesn't know the German word for "rocket." In my mind, I imagine she's been listening to podcasts in different languages since she developed her quirk, so she has a pretty large vocabulary.

The same goes for sign languages, if she hasn't seen anybody use it, she couldn't start signing stuff. I wanted her to have a basic understanding of sign language before she met Koto, but when they became friends, her vocabulary got much better.

For Reina, I'd say her extremes include her love of rollercoasters, chocolate, and getting to know people. Her friendly personality and natural ability to read a person's mood makes others strangely comfortable around her upon first meeting.

She would love to hear the life story of anybody she meets, just to have a glimpse into another person's mind. This is yet another reason she loves to travel. She wants to experience as many cultures as she can within her life. As is the same with her other siblings, she's incredibly sassy and loves her life in the typically rowdy big family household. Reina's totally the type of person to adopt sad friends and try to cheer them up, giving them as much constant support as they need.

Her aesthetic is lime green and slate grey. She wears the combination of colors a lot and has them as the main colors of her room.

She's also bi. When writing the Movie Night chapter, I wrote out a couple parts with her and Mina interacting, but I felt like at the time, they were a bit too forced, considering Koto wouldn't know about that. In my mind, they talked a bit when Koto was interacting with other people, but I'm still debating with myself because I also sort of want Reina to end up with Shinso. I'm thinking about doing a short spin-off book about her because I'm really struggling to determine who she ends up with. I feel like Mina and Shinso are polar opposites, but would both work so well with Reina. Aaaah! I can't decide.

Anyways, I can't really explain how I write Reina's character; everything just sort of writes itself when it comes to her. It's like her personality didn't need to be thought out, it was just in my mind already and I can turn on autopilot when writing her parts. It's odd and like I said, I can't explain.

Reina has long, straight black hair. I sometimes imagine her having bangs, but I can't really decide. She also has grey eyes and wears round glasses.

Uka Fujino

So, when it comes to the twins, I found a lot of inspiration from Phineas and Ferb. Uka is more like the Ferb of this pair. He's quiet, yet you know his mind is constantly coming up with extremely intelligent ideas. Often, his plans are foolproof.

He's less impulsive than his brother, always thinking things out more. He doesn't speak much, but when he does, people generally listen. He has an aura about him that tells you he's dangerous, but the glint in his eye is almost a taunt, saying "prove it."

He absolutely loves building robots with his brother and fighting them. His main ambition is to get into the UA support program with Yuta. They both know their work is impressive, yet Uka is more quiet about that fact. He would rather people see with their own eyes what he's capable of than just brag to them.

Uka's quirk of Blueprint Telepathy allows him to share his ideas by projecting them into other people's brains, a combination of the "ability to see something in their brain" and the "ability to share their sight with others." He often uses this to wordlessly communicate. He lives by the motto that ideas often get lost through communication. He trusts his blueprints more than his words which is another reason he keeps quiet.

I actually got quite a bit of inspiration from Todoroki as well. I find they have very similar tendencies and weird little facets to their personality that makes people want to get to know them.

He interacts with a few kids at school, mainly keeping to his tightly knit circle of friends where it's comfortable.

Uka's extremes include his love of marshmallows and a strange obsession with flamethrowers, as well as his absolute hatred of anything citrus. He loves frosting, so sometimes he just eats half of a cupcake or a piece of cake and then licks the frosting off the rest.

His dark hair is shaggier than his brother's and he doesn't really pay any attention to it.

Yuta Fujino

In the Phineas and Ferb comparison, Yuta is definitely Phineas. As a matter of fact, Koto recalls lending the twins her copy of the series, but they have yet to give it back. Every night as they fall asleep, Yuta puts it on for them to watch as they tinker with the pieces of metal they were allowed to bring up to their room. At this point, they could probably recite the entire series from memory.

Yuta is considered the youngest of the Fujino 7 even though their parents won't tell them which of the twins was born first. He's definitely more immature than his identical twin, but significantly more outgoing.

He's one of those kids who's generally trying to be nice, but can become obnoxious if they talk to you for too long. Nevertheless, he's a little social butterfly, opting to hang out with many different groups of people at school. He's tried to bring Uka out of his comfort zone and meet new people, but it never really works out.

I had decided pretty early on in making Yuta's character that he would be gay. Yet another scene that I had removed from the Movie Night chapter was when Koto and Yuta were alone in The Garage and she would ask him about the guy he was interested in. I had an idea that he would've slipped at some point and confessed to her, but I couldn't figure out another time that those two would've been alone together, considering Yuta is rarely without Uka at the house. Altogether, I didn't think it was logical for Koto to have known just yet.

Either way, he's terrified to come out to his family, even though he thinks they'd be accepting. He doesn't know that Reina is bi because she didn't really tell anyone. Her philosophy is more along the lines of "guys are hot, girls are hot, I'll date who I want and they just have to accept it." Yuta is a person who feeds off of social acceptance and he's rather proud of the status he's created for himself, so he's scared that coming out would do something to change that.

He keeps his hair swept back from his face, discovering hair gel along with the rest of the boys his age. His face is almost permanently set in a mischievous grin that makes adults nervous. He's a bit of a clutz, due to him generally thinking of something other than what's right in front of him. He's always thinking up new ideas, generally pranks to play or a way to beat his brother in the next robot fight.

His quirk is Preemptive Speech, a combination of "knowledge of language" and "knowledge of the future," which allows him to know what people are going to say before they say it. It makes conversations with him a little hard because it seems one-sided. Unless you think about it in the context of him already hearing your point of view without having to say it…

Either way, it's hard to hold a conversation with the guy. Ruri keeps on telling him to not interrupt people. Especially if he's in a conversation with more than one person. Not everybody knows what the other person will say. However, this makes him a really strong debater, always ready to one-up the competition before they even get a chance to convince him he's wrong.

Yuta wants to go to UA with his brother, building things in the support course.

His extremes include his love of turtles, fortune cookies, and the color red (he believes it's his color). Honestly, it makes it slightly easier to distinguish the twins by color, considering Uka generally wears blue. Additionally, Yuta loves the aspect of lighthouses, but you could not pay him to go into one; he's absolutely terrified of them. That being said, he has no fear of ladders or heights, there's just something about lighthouses...
