Chapter 8: Celebration Dinner
A week later, an envelope finally comes from UA. Mic insists I go to my room to open it, but I know he'll have his ear pressed up against the door anyway, so I look him dead in the eye and rip it open, depositing the contents on the coffee table. A small metal disk a little smaller than a coaster clatters against the glass surface. Light beams out of it as a hologram of the #1 hero, All Might is displayed before us. He wears a striped yellow suit that clashes horribly with his golden, quaffed hair, but I guess if you're the most famous hero, you can do whatever you want.
"I am here!" His smiling face says his signature catchphrase and I can't help but smile as well. "To congratulate you on your performance in the entrance exam! But not only as a hero, for I have accepted a job at my alma mater! That's right! I will be a teacher at UA High! Now back to your exam results! You scored high enough marks to pass the written exam! As for the practical exam, you worked efficiently in defeating your opponents as well as assisting your peers! There was a category that we had not mentioned, specifically designated towards rescue!"
My heart thuds in my chest. Rescue? Does that mean I get extra points for helping the tail kid?
"For showing such selflessness in rescuing your peer, despite physical repercussions, you receive 40 rescue points in addition to your 32 villain points, placing you in fourth overall!! Congratulations, Koto Yamada, you've been accepted into UA!!"
The video blinks out as I stare silently into space.
"YEEEEAAAAAAAAAHHHHH!!!" Mic's voice blasts through my thoughts and I nearly topple over from the force. "YOU DID IT!!!!!!!" He pulls me into a tight hug. I can't help but smile and hug him back.
I did it. I really did it.
"I'M SO PROUD OF MY FAVORITE NIECE!!"
"I'm your only niece," I sign as I pull away.
"YOU SHOULD HAVE FORMS TO FILL OUT HERE!!" He grabs the papers that also scattered when the envelope was opened, ignoring my statement.
I look through the documents with him. They list requirements for our quirk registration forms and measurements so they can send uniforms as well as designs and requests for our costumes. Apparently, they are having some high tier company make them for us based on our requests. I'll have to draw something out later.
Mic and I decide there should probably be a name for my quirk. It gets confusing sometimes when I talk about my "voice," so he takes to the internet.
After extensive searches, we come across one book called Fairest. It's about a girl who can essentially do what I can do with my quirk, flinging sound to other places, though she can only make one sound at a time. Doing a bit more digging, we find she calls it "illusing."
Illusing. Illusing. I'm illusing my voice over there. My quirk is illusing. I roll the word around in my mind. I can illuse. I like the sound of it.
We finish the required forms and leave the costume design papers for later.
"LET'S GET SOME DINNER!!! WE'RE GOING SOMEWHERE SPECIAL TONIGHT, SO DRESS NICE!!!"
"Dress nice? Who are you and what've you done with my uncle?" I sign, sending him a sarcastic smirk.
"WE'RE LEAVING IN AN HOUR!!!" He yells, going into his room and shutting the door. I shake my head, chucking at his antics.
He usually doesn't respond to my snide remarks, but I know he sees them. Every now and then, he'll start playing along with whatever bit I've started. Those are always fun and it reassures me that I actually have a sense of humor.
I go to my room and examine all the nice clothes in my closet, eventually settling on a black dress with a lace neckline and white and blue flowers on it(see picture above). I pull it on and head to the bathroom to examine my hair situation.
Curls.
Same as always.
I pull the top of it back into a small ponytail, then push it up and through itself to make it look more formal and hide the elastic. I pull out my makeup bag and apply eyeliner and mascara, then a light grey shadow to my eyes. I put on a bit of blush and a natural shade of lipstick, then pronounce myself ready.
I head out to the living room and examine the change in the place since I first arrived. The dance floor has been filled with a couch and a coffee table and all other typical living room furniture. I can't believe that being my guardian had made him all domestic. He still has parties, but not as often. Only when I'm at Ochaco's or Reina's house or am in my room with the door locked. I always help him move the furniture into a spare room that he also keeps locked. We can't have anyone thinking anything's changed in his life, now can we?
Only the administration of UA knows he is my uncle, as I had to give an emergency contact. He was still trying to convince me to tell my friends and come clean about the whole situation, but I couldn't help being scared.
"HEY KIDDO, YOU READY?" He walks into the room, wearing a nice suit with his normal triangle glasses. Well, he can't be too professional or it'll ruin his image. I'm not the only one here with an exterior to uphold.
I nod and put on my black leather jacket as we leave. I guess we've both had an influence on each other.
We climb into his sports car and take off. I don't want him to take his eyes off the road, so I don't try to ask where we're going. After a while of driving to the outskirts of the city, we arrive at a warmly lit restaurant with a view of the ocean.
I recognize this place! I think to myself. We came here a few days after I moved in. It's a really nice place that has become sort of a VIP spot for heros and their families. When they opened, the whole restaurant was open for the public to make reservations, but after a few months of heros bumping people out of their reservations, the front dining room was saved for the public while all the rest of the rooms were reserved for heros.
We enter the building and every eye turns towards us. Applause rises from the hall as the civilians lucky enough to have a table cheer for Present Mic. He raises his arms in recognition while I hide behind him, trying to disappear into the wall.
The hostess leads us through the tables to one of the back rooms. The far wall is covered in windows, allowing in the light from the setting sun. Three tables sit in the room, one large one in the center and two smaller tables next to the windows.
Seductive laughter comes from one of the small tables. I look over to see Mt. Lady, flirting with a young man. He sits silently across from her, looking at her with heart eyes. A family sits at the larger table, but tense silence hangs over them. The giant man at the head of the table wears a suit with flames burning off the lapels. The fire also dons his face in the form of a mustache and beard as well as the rest of his hair.
Endeavor.
He's always intimidated me. Those startling blue eyes look over at us as we enter. "Ah! Present Mic!" His voice booms throughout the room.
"HEY THERE, ENDEAVOR!! What brings you here?!?" The family covers their ears at the sound. They may be used to their father's loud voice, but nothing compares to Uncle Mic's regular talking volume.
"Well, young Shoto here has just been accepted into the hero course at UA, so we are celebrating tonight! He has finally decided to follow his father's path!" He smiles proudly as he claps the boy next to him on the back.
The boy's hair is two toned, red on his left side and white on the right. It hangs over his face as he stares blankly at the table.
Wow, you'd think he'd be proud, but it looks like he couldn't care less. His face even looks disgusted.
I look around the table. Two older looking kids sit on the hero's other side, a boy with white hair and a girl with white hair and red highlights. No mother, interesting. They both look slightly alarmed at their father's action.
I suddenly feel an arm rest on my shoulder and pull me forward. "Young Koto also got good news from UA today!! She will also be in the hero course!!!"
My eyes widen as I look over at my uncle. WHAT'S HE DOING?!?
"Ah, I didn't even notice she's here. She's so quiet. Is this your daughter?"
"No no, she's my niece!" I elbow Mic hard in the side before he can keep talking. "If you don't mind, we should be getting to our table!!! But we'll see you around, eh Endeavor?!?"
"Yes, I'm sure we will! Don't let us disturb your dinner!"
Mic leads me over to our table. As we sit, I send him a dangerous glare. "What did you do?" I sign, panicked.
"I'm sorry, kiddo," he signs back. "I guess I just wasn't thinking. But you don't have to worry about Shoto saying anything about it to your friends. He's the quietest kid I've ever met."
I take a deep breath and nod, still nervous.
"I can talk with Endeavor if you want," he signs, glancing over at the table where they are already standing up to leave. The kids silently put their jackets on as the giant man speaks loudly to them. "Be right back," Mic stands up, already moving over to the table. I try to get his attention to tell him to not worry about it, but it's too late. My face flares up into a blush as he calls over to the number 2 hero, "Endeavor! Mind if I have a word?!?"
"Not at all! Kids, I'll be right back." With that, they both leave the room and I can hear the three kids let out an audible breath.
They stand around awkwardly for a moment before the two older kids begin talking. The younger boy with two hair colors looks around, taking in the restaurant, as if he was scared to look up before with his father in the room. I open my menu and try to decide on my order.
The salmon was good the last time we came. I might have to do that again.
I hear even footsteps approaching me, but I keep looking at my menu.
"It was very nice meeting you," a deep, soft voice says. I put my menu down to look up at the boy. He is bowing at the side of my table, waiting for me to say something. I wave my hand in front of his face and he glances up at me, mildly confused, but covers it quickly.
At least he has more expressions than just a blank face. For a second, I thought that was all he could manage.
His eyes shock me as they meet mine. His right eye, before hidden by the white hair, is a dark, warm grey, while his left eye matches the startling electric blue of his father's. Not only that, but the area around his blue eye appears to be all red. At first I think it's a birthmark, but before I avert my eyes, very conscious of how rude it is to stare, I notice that the skin is all scar tissue.
I dig into my purse to pull out a notepad and pen. Usually, I carry a whiteboard, but it was too big to fit in my small bag and I didn't forsee using it on this outing.
"Nice to meet you too," I write on it before showing it to the boy. His face reveals none of his thoughts as he nods and lifts his gaze from the paper. I place it back in front of me and begin writing, "please don't tell anyone about seeing me here," but I hear voices coming and can't finish writing before my uncle returns to the room with the flame hero.
I rip the small page off my notepad and crumple it up, then write on the new sheet, "See you at school!"
I stand and lift up the pad with my left hand so he can read it while I grab his hand into a handshake. I see him flinch, but he recovers quickly when he notices the piece of paper I'm slipping into his hand.
"Yes, I will," he says, bowing once more as I let his hand go. I bow as well, trying to remain as proper as I can in front of the heros.
"Shoto!!" His father's voice once again booms over the space.
"I'm coming, Father," he says evenly as he turns and walks over to the large man, towering over his son at twice his height, maybe more. As the group leaves, he unfolds the paper in his hands and reads it. He lowers his hands to his sides and turns back to me, inclining his head in the smallest of nods before returning attention to his father.
"What is that in your hand?"
He puts his left hand behind his back as they walk out of the room and I can see flames dancing in his palm, burning the paper to ash. "Nothing, Father."
I let out a breath I didn't realize I was holding as Mic returns to the table. We both sit and continue to look over the menu. He goes over my next steps of being admitted into UA all throughout dinner and I find myself fascinated by the school, anxious to get there already.
