Chapter 72: The Party (Part 3)

Koto's POV
(Friday the 26th)

The boy regards me pensively for a moment before saying, "sure."

I let out the breath I was holding, along with everyone standing around the campfire. Immediately, whispers begin being passed back and forth.

He walks back to the campfire. "Nick," he calls to get the attention of one of the stoner kids. "I'll be right back. Watch my guitar."

The large, stocky guy he talked to gives a thumbs up and takes the case from him.

"C'mon, snowflake," he says, walking ahead of me towards the house. The moment he steps out of the shadows and into the light of the full moon, I see what the cuts in his shirt are for.

Large, translucent wings protrude from between his shoulder blades, glowing as if every feather is woven from liquid moonlight. They don't just look like delicate angel wings, but powerful like an eagle's, tucked tight behind him. I'm so entranced by the effect that I almost forget to follow him.

"Do ya have a name?" He asks as we pass the pool, heads turning to watch him pass.

I almost say Koto, but I catch myself before I can. "Elsa," I somehow manage to not stutter.

"Jupiter," he says, confirming my guess.

"N-nice to meet you," I mumble quietly.

A small smile crosses his face, as if he's only smiling for himself. "Nice to meet you too, snowflake," he says, opening the porch door for me.

We push through the living room to the kitchen which is even more crowded than before. We each grab a cup and pour our own drinks.

Trying for conversation, I ask, "so why was th-that girl so mad?"

He laughs ruefully to himself and takes a sip of this drink. "Annie? Don't worry about her. Crazy crush and all that. She'll get over it."

I nod, but now that he says not to, I'm worrying about it. I didn't try to take him away from her, but even so, it looked like she was ready to kill me.

"See?" He says, pointing across the room. "She already has another victim."

I turn to see where he's pointing and my breath catches in my throat. She's there alright, her curly brown hair bouncing in the colorful lights as she flashes a blinding smile and none other than Eijiro. He's backed up against a wall, smiling kindly, though I can tell he's uncomfortable. His red hair is down in a ponytail at the nape of his neck. His hands are up, as though trying to keep a distance between him and her.

"Like I said, nothing to worry about," Jupiter says, drawing my attention back to him.

I look around and see other familiar faces in the chaos. Shoji stands in a corner, looking around, almost surveying the area. Mina and Momo are on the dance floor, moving from group to group. They're dancing like everyone else, but I see them carefully checking each person's face. Ochaco and Midoriya approach Eijiro, trying to pull him away from Annie who pouts and brings them into the conversation. The scowl on Ochaco's face is enough to tell me that she's flirting with Midoriya too. A group moves out of the doorway to the dining room, so I can see Kaminari cheering as Todoroki scores a point in beer pong. His own drink sloshes over the edge of the cup and he wears a toothy smile, yelling along with everyone else.

I don't know how many of my other classmates are here, but I don't want to stick around and find out. I throw back my drink and wince, looking for a way out that doesn't go past any of them.

"You're looking pale, snowflake," Jupiter says, smirking, but the smile soon leaves his face. "Elsa?" He asks, setting his drink down to look me in the eye.

"I don't f-feel good," I say, looking at my feet.

Jupiter takes the cup from my hand and steers me outside. "I'm gonna grab my guitar. Just stay here where I can see you," he instructs, leaving me by the pool.

I feel kinda bad for making a big deal. I know in his mind, I probably made it seem like I was drugged or something, but I need to get out of here and I don't know how else to do it. He's going to be a hero, yes, so I would assume he's honorable and wouldn't try anything. If he does, I'd be able to use my quirk anyway. I just want to get out of Shoji's hearing range if it comes down to that.

I watch as he walks across the lawn to the bonfire. I about jump out of my skin when I hear a familiar voice behind me.

"What are you doing here, Mute?" The voice asks in Japanese.

Okay, focus, I tell myself as I turn around and pretend to notice Bakugo staring at me. He's wearing skinny jeans and a black t-shirt, a red and blue flannel tied around his waist. His explosive blonde hair is covered by a navy blue beanie, as if he's trying to hide it, only the front strands poking out. I can't help but think of my conversation about him earlier and my heart skips a beat. Even though the outfit looks hastily put together, I can't get it out of my head the tiny voice that whispers, he looks good.

"Sorry, are you t-talking to me?" I ask in English. I hope my expression looks clueless enough. His eyes flicker with disbelief, anger, questioning, and doubt as he looks me over. I notice the way his eyes trace my face, looking even down to my scar, which I hope is still covered and not obvious in the light of the pool.

"Don't fuckin' mess with me," he growls.

I put on a ditzy smile and giggle, saying, "sorry, I don't speak whatever that is. Chinese?"

He sputters for a moment before looking even more determined. His voice switches to English, "I don't know what game you're playing, Mute, but it's not going to work."

I let my eyebrows furrow and I cock my head to the side. "What game? Look, I don't know who you think I am, but you've obviously got the wrong person." I mentally high five myself for managing to not stutter. I just pray my facial expression is enough to convince him.

"Stop fuckin' messing around, Curly!" He shouts, pushing at my shoulders. I feel myself tip back a little far, the alcohol throwing me off balance. He keeps getting in my face, forcing me to back up even further. "What did happen to your hair anyway? And your eyes? And why are you wearing all that stupid makeup?"

I struggle to think of something to say as I continue stepping back. He bares his teeth, a vein popping out of his red face. "P-please--" I sputter.

"Just come back!" He yells, once again in Japanese, as he shoves me hard in the shoulders.

I feel my feet slip out from underneath me and I fall backwards towards the water, but I never hit the surface, instead another force hitting me from the side, holding me up.

"What's going on, man?" I hear Eijiro ask, but he seems to be far away now.

"That was her!" Bakugo screams from even further. The voices become muffled by distance as I finally open my eyes.

"Are you okay?" Jupiter asks, his voice buffeted by the wind. I look to see the ground moving quickly, about a hundred feet below us as we fly like a comet across the sky. In one hand, he holds his guitar case and with the other, he holds me tight to his side. His moonlit wings flap once powerfully, keeping us in the air.

"Umm...y-yeah," I stutter, glancing at his face. His green eyes seem to be scanning everywhere in front of us simultaneously, never getting a chance to look down at me. "L-long story, b-b-but he's with somebody that has enhanced senses. We sh-sh-sh--"

"We should get out of sight?" He supplies. I nod, even though I know he doesn't see it. I'm sure he can feel it though because he dips down until we're only a few feet from the ground, soaring over the farmland at a mind-boggling speed. After about 5 straight minutes, he comes to a stop outside a neighborhood, opening his wings to catch air, then fluttering gently until we touch the ground.

"Th-that was terrifying," I say quietly as he adjusts his clothes and begins walking at a brisk pace down the street, pulling me with him.

"Who were you with?" He asks lowly, walking up the front steps of a house that looks no different from the others on the street. The moment the moon is obscured, his wings go back to being invisible on his back. I wonder if they're even still there. I'm about to reach out and touch them, but he turns around and fixes me with a serious look. "Who were you with?" He asks again, stronger this time.

"M-my friends Kati a-and--"

"Kati Jessop?" He asks, holding his hand at about his shoulder height,  "about this tall? Dark blonde hair?"

I nod my head, feeling a warm sensation in my stomach on behalf of my friend as he opens the door. Well at least he remembers her. This is a good sign.

"Do you have your phone?" I shake my head. "Did you leave it there?"

"No, I didn't b-bring it with me."

He looks at me as though I've grown a second head. Eventually he sighs and brings out his own phone. "I'll let her know you're with me and that you're safe."

How does he even have her number? And she thinks he doesn't notice her? I think to myself in bewilderment.

"It's a long st-story," I say, wobbling to one side and catching myself on the wall. Maybe I poured myself too much. "I just wanted t-to be away from home. I d-di-didn't think they'd follow me."

"You need sleep," he says, glancing my way. I nod my head as it feels like it's spinning. "C'mon."

He takes my hand and leads me downstairs into the basement that looks to be like the family's living room and through a door. It appears to be his bedroom.

I stay where I am as he climbs into his bed. When he looks back and sees me staying where I am, he cocks his head and says, "c'mon, snowflake."

I just shake my head and start backing out. "This isn't wh-what I wanted," I stutter. His eyebrows furrow as he stands from the mattress.

"I'm sorry," he says quietly, approaching with his hands showing. "You really ran away from home?"

I nod, shifting from foot to foot. "D-did you not believe me?"

He smiles a bit bashfully. "You seemed like you were telling the truth. I just want to make sure."

"We-well, I am," I state definitively.

He smirks and gestures back to the bed. "I wasn't gonna do anything. I just wanted to keep an eye on you. But if you'd rather, I'll go sleep in the guest room."

I nod quickly. He smiles and places a hand on my cheek, kissing my forehead briefly before walking out. He calls behind him, "sweet dreams, snowflake."

I wake up early in the morning. The blackout blinds on his windows don't let me see the sky for reference, but his clock reads 5:49.

I try to ignore the twisting of my stomach and the pain in my eyes, but ultimately run to the bathroom anyway. I empty the contents of my stomach into the toilet for a while.

"Better out than in," a voice says from behind me. Jupiter stands in the doorway, already changed into different clothes. I wonder silently how long he's been up. He places a glass of water and a few pills on the counter. "I usually go for a morning jog. There's an extra toothbrush in the bottom drawer and I'm sure you won't be up for food just yet, but there's some saltines in the kitchen if you're feeling brave. I'll be back in maybe an hour."

He turns to leave, but then swivels back on his heel, his lips rolled in. "And, uhh, thanks for not puking in my bed," he says with a small smile.

I find myself smiling back.
