Chapter 47: Chilling with the Squad
The class performance is going well. We stationed ourselves by the huge light show to dance to Good Time. A few of our classmates stand on the sidelines, not wanting to participate, Bakugo of course being one of them.
He's staring down at his phone and realizes all too late that his squad is running for him. Eijiro hardens his arms to hold the boy down as they drag him into the group. I increase the volume of the illused song to drown out the profanities he's yelling. I can't even hear what they're saying until they get closer.
"Sacrifice! Sacrifice!" Sero and Kaminari chant, pulling him into the center of the circle.
"Fuck all of you!" Bakugo shouts, trying to squirm his way out of their hold.
"Come on, guys. Just let him be. He doesn't have to participate if he doesn't want to," I sign to them. The boys whine, but put him down anyway. He brushes himself off and scowls at each person individually, including me. As if this is somehow my fault!
As he turns around to stomp off, Mina calls after him, "oh right! You can't dance, can you, Mr. Three-Stars?"
Immediately he turns on his heel and walks towards us again, his face flushed red in anger. He snatches my hands and pulls me into the spinning move we did earlier tonight. His hold is strong and steady as he catches me, much better than the other two attempts. As he pulls me up from the dip, I see his ruby eyes alight with a determined fire. In them, I can see his resolve to prove he's the best, daring anyone and everyone to contradict him. He blinks slowly, dangerously, turning his sharpened gaze on our friends.
"What did you say?" He growls, the vein in his forehead bulging. After another harsh glare, he turns and walks away, shoving his hands in his pockets. Over the music, I can hear him grumbling, "fuckin' raccoon…"
I smile at my friends who are all laughing at his inability to leave things be. Together with the rest of our class, we dance and have fun, savoring the night air and the electrifying excitement from the crowd.
When the song ends, we reconvene with those on the sidelines. Melissa is hopping up and down between Shoji and Tokoyami, clutching her phone tightly. "I got such a good video, guys! I'll be sure to send it to you!" She chirps.
After a few more minutes of chatting and making plans for tomorrow, we all split up to go to our own hotels. I head out with Eijiro and Bakugo, the former still expressing his excitement from the show while the latter walks silently beside him.
I nod along with what the redhead is saying, but start to zone out. At first, I feel a small breeze which has me thinking I should've brought a jacket. A shiver goes down my spine at the unwarranted thought of how warm Bakugo was when he caught me. I feel a blotchy blush creep over my face as I chastise myself.
Don't just go thinking stuff like that! Of course he was warm! Guys are usually warmer than girls, aren't they? It's scientifically proven that a woman's core should be--
I'm brought out of my thoughts when something pokes my red cheek. I look over hastily to see Eijiro examining me as my face flushes deeper. What am I even doing? Get out of my head!
"You alright?" He asks, prompting Bakugo to look up and glance at us from under his fringe. I nod and hug my arms around myself, blinking to bring my focus to the road in front of me. But it's no use.
The harder I try to focus on my surroundings, the more a certain blonde's toothy smile fills my mind, the more I can hear the awkward cackle of his laugh, the more I can feel his warmth.
I once again shiver, holding my arms tight around me, but a jacket is already being draped over my shoulders. "Can't have you getting sick, can we?" Eijiro asks with his cheerful smile in place.
I look down at his red jacket and back up to him with the best smile I can muster. "Thanks, Ei," I illuse, holding the fabric tight around me.
"Anytime," he chirps. "It's the manly thing to do after all!" He continues talking about the evening as Bakugo and I walk silently on either side of him.
When I get back to our suite, the Fujinos are all asleep, so I pop my headphones in and open the attachment on the email from Melissa. I watch with a smile how much fun everyone seemed to have with our performance. The crowds were cheering and dancing along which I hadn't even noticed. When the video gets to the part where we got Bakugo in the group, I can't help but rewind over and over, in awe of how impressive we looked. The spin was executed so smoothly, yet so powerfully.
When I take long enough reliving the night, I change into pyjamas and head to bed. As I fall asleep, I see the replay of the spin in my mind and I can't help but wonder if he's thinking about it as much as I am.
Probably not, I tell myself as I roll over. He probably doesn't care.

The next morning, after a measly breakfast of toast and apple juice, I meet with the Bakusquad at the entrance to the expo. Mina immediately loops her arm with mine and takes off. Last night, they said they had looked through all the exhibits in the main part of the expo, but were going to go to the amusement park section today.
Despite myself, I can barely hold in my excitement that I was invited to go with them. Of course hanging out with the Fujinos is always fun and I would be interested to see how the Dekusquad would behave on rollercoasters, but there's something about going on rides with a new group of people that's fascinating me.
Who will scream as the cart crests the hill? Kaminari will probably scream all the way up the hill. Will Bakugo sulk the entire time or does he actually like rollercoasters? Who will be the first to tap out? Who can drink a slushie the fastest? Who will win the most games?
All valid questions that I'm excited for an answer to. I feel a bit of guilt on my chest for being this excited with the Bakusquad when I barely said a word to Todoroki yesterday. But that's normal, right? Neither of us are talkative. He just wanted to look through the pavilion…for three hours. But we were enjoying each other's company! Not that there was much else to do. We just have opposing interests and stuff. I like going on rides and running around in the sun and he likes…reading…in a dark pavilion…for three hours…
But opposites attract, don't they? It makes sense!
But did we really spend three hours in there? And he thought that'd be fun?
Mina jerks me around a corner, breaking me away from my thoughts. The guys follow after us as we enter the queue for a spinny ride. Eijiro, Kaminari, and Sero have been keeping up with us the entire time, but Bakugo let himself lag behind. He does that half jogging, half speed walking thing that one would do when crossing the street to catch up before anyone follows us into the line.
We pair up; me with Mina, Eijiro with Bakugo, and Kaminari with Sero; to make boarding easier. Each cart only has four seats, so Mina and I volunteer to ride with strangers. We unanimously decide that it's best if Bakugo just stays with the group.
The man at the gate calls for two riders and so Mina and I rush forward, ahead of the groups of 3s and 4s, to board with two younger girls. They bounce in their seats with anxious expressions as we board the cart, sitting across from them.
This is probably their first time riding this one, I think as the handlebars are lowered. Mina and I wave to the guys as the ride pushes off onto the chains. We're riding up the hill backwards, meaning it's most likely we're going to fall backwards unless the cart somehow spins at the top. Thankfully, there is only a tiny drop, followed by a turn, allowing the cart to spin freely as we drop into a spiral.
Mina shrieks in delight while the other two girls are screaming bloody murder. I just sit and let the wind blow my flyaway hairs around. A turn catches me off guard, so I clutch onto the handlebars, something I try not to do too much. The copious amount of sunscreen I put on makes the bar a little slippery. Sorry to whoever gets this seat next, but I'm not going to burn. Not today, no thank you.
Eventually we come spinning to a stop and are all in fits of giggles with how loud they were screaming. Somewhere above us, we hear Kaminari screaming at the top of his lungs and Bakugo shouting, "SHUT THE FUCK UP!"
Mina and I glance at each other before sputtering into hysterical laughter. The girls look at us, confused.
"Those are our friends screaming," Mina explains, wiping a tear from her eye. The girls look even more confused, so I illuse the same thing in English.
"Ohhhhhh," they both say at the same time with the same inflection, then look at each other and start giggling. As we get off the ride, Mina and I wave them off as they run to whatever's next on their list while we wait by the exit for the guys. Through the fence, I catch a glimpse of them rushing by and hearing their screams.
Soon, they walk through the exit, their hair looking a bit more ruffled than before. I'm sure I can't look much better, but Mina looks flawless as always.
"C'mon! Let's go on this one next!" Kaminari cheers, running to the next ride, a more traditional coaster.
And so the morning goes, us running around from ride to ride until Sero and Mina are stumbling off one ride, suggesting we get lunch.
We find a traditional American diner themed place and head in. The interior has a warm color scheme with fake plants in all the corners and neon accents around the molding and the counter. Mina and I run to the bathroom while the guys get us a table.
"So which was your favorite so far?" She asks as we wash our hands.
"Definitely the corkscrew one," I answer, remembering how loudly everyone was screaming on that one.
"I guess that makes sense. You had your hands up the entire time. Even Bakugo was holding onto the handlebars."
I giggle at that. Ever since I met Reina, she's been dragging me onto every rollercoaster in Japan, so I've become pretty fearless when it comes to the more insane rides.
We discard our paper towels and go find the guys at a booth next to a window. Eijiro and Bakugo sit on one side and Sero and Kaminari sit on the other. Mina bounds over to them to take the space next to Sero and I have to fight to not sigh. Thanks, Mina, I think sarcastically, going to the other side.
Bakugo stands up and gestures with his chin to the booth. "I don't want the middle seat," he growls. I roll my eyes and sit down, scooching across to sit next to Eijiro, the blonde blocking me in. I guess his logic is sound. And if he took the window seat, he'd be squished into the wall. I guess I get where he's coming from, but that's really selfish.
I should've had Mina take this seat. At least then she'd be next to Ei and they could talk more. When is he gonna do something about that crush of his?
When the waiter takes our order, I flip through the menu as the others are speaking. When he gets to me, I illuse, "I'll have water." Immediately a sharp pain blooms through my foot and I try not to flinch as I smile and continue, "and a BLT."
He finishes taking our orders and heads back to the kitchen. All while pretending to be engrossed in the conversation at the table, I kick Bakugo hard in the shin. He doesn't even flinch, the only indication on his face being a quick blink.
"Fuck off," he mumbles under his breath.
"No you," I illuse in his ear. His nose crinkles briefly at the feeling. "I was going to get food, you know."
"Whatever."
I huff and play with my silverware wrapped in a napkin. I pull off the sticky paper around it and turn it into a paper football, flicking it at Kaminari when I'm done. It hits him on the chest.
"Oh it's so on," he says, smirking. I put up my fingers as goalposts and we play until our food arrives.

After lunch, we decide to play some of the games and then go on more rides to try and get the best picture. We walk around for a while, slowly accumulating prizes as we win games. I destroy everyone at that game where you shoot water at a clown and win a Spiderman hat which I immediately put on. I notice a lot of the prizes are superhero themed, but only the superheroes from stories. I guess it makes sense. The current heroes will only be around for so long, but the ones from stories will always be popular.
Eijiro and Bakugo are the only ones who can ding the bell on that one hammer game, so they win capes. The rest of us laugh on the sidelines at Bakugo who doesn't want to wear something so stupid, but also doesn't want anyone else to touch it. He ends up just wearing the Batman cape while Eijiro runs around him in his Superman cape.
After we decide our food is digested enough, we go back to riding rides. We switch who we ride with each time to try and get the best picture. For all of them, Bakugo is just sitting with a scowl, sometimes rolling his eyes, so it becomes our mission to get him to react.
Concocting a plan, I board the next ride next to him. As it takes off, I pretend to be really scared, constantly grabbing onto his arm, but he keeps pushing me off. It's impossible to keep a straight face when he flips me off. I cackle as the cameras flash, capturing the moment. He notices of course, pouting the rest of the ride.
"I'm sowwy," I illuse as we get out, trying to wrap my arms around him, but he puts a hand on my face and pushes me away.
"Did you do it?" Kaminari asks, jumping up and down.
We walk over to the booth displaying the pictures, quickly locating our own. Kaminari and Mina sit in the front, her pecking his cheek as he sends the camera a cheeky smile and a peace sign, Eijiro and Sero sit in the middle, giving each other bunny ears as they make funny faces at the camera, and Bakugo and I sit in the back, me obviously laughing as he flips me off with a sneer.
Sero and Mina pat me on the back and we buy a copy of the photo, deciding we can make copies later, but I deserve the real one for winning.
The girl working at the booth prints it out and puts it in an envelope with a piece of cardboard so it doesn't bend. I put it in a plastic bag inside my own bag so it won't get wet just in case we go on any water rides later. Or if Bakugo gets any funny ideas about destroying it.
We spend the rest of the afternoon marathon drinking slushies to see who can finish theirs the fastest (Kaminari doesn't even get brain freeze, he just chugged it which makes me concerned that he's got some brain damage from his quirk) and getting henna tattoos. Although I hadn't expected Bakugo to participate, he got a dragon pattern painted onto his forearm. He did, however, make the henna artist cry, but Eijiro did a good job of calming them both down.
We end up going on the ferris wheel to watch the sunset before dinner. I ride in the second cart with Kaminari. I had worked on shuffling everyone around in line so Eijiro would end up with Mina. I just send a silent prayer that Sero is still alive after riding with Bakugo.
"Very romantic setting," he observes, throwing an arm over my shoulder as we sit back to enjoy the view of the expo. "If you're expecting a kiss, it's all for naught, I'm afraid." He looks away, feigning disinterest. "I've met another woman."
I perk up in my seat, looking over at him excitedly. "Who is it?" I illuse, grinning wildly.
"Not telling." He mimes sealing his lips with an equally wide smile. "I'm a man of mystery."
"Well she's a lucky lady," I lean into him and give him a friendly nudge with my elbow. I point to his shirt and illuse, "that shirt? Boyfriend material."
He chuckles and leans his head back. "Why couldn't you flirt with me like that when I was trying?"
I glance up to examine his face as he watches the sunset, his eyes alight and wearing a large grin that he's obviously trying to reign in. "You never looked at me like that."
"What?"
"Your face says it all. You might try to flirt with people, but you don't smile like that. You're obviously thinking about her."
His smile widens and he looks away, trying to hide it. He tightens his hold around me in a side hug. "Smarty-pants," he scoffs, but I can tell from his voice that he's still smiling.
He leaves his arm around me until the end of the ride when he hops off and extends a hand out to me to help me down. "M'lady," he says cheekily. I don't need any help down, but I accept his hand anyway, giggling as we walk down the ramp.
After a quick dinner, we're back to exploring the park at night with everything lit up in neon. We stand on a fence to watch the firework show on one of the great lakes, then head back to our hotels, thoroughly exhausted by the day.
After grilling Eijiro over text, I find out that he didn't make a move on Mina while we were on the ferris wheel, much to my disappointment. I remind him that she's not gonna stay single forever which freaks him out enough for me to think he might just do something about it.
