Chapter 42: Mitsuki's Intuition

Ochaco comes rushing out the doors to meet me, stealing me from Koda to wrap me in a tight embrace. "We passed! WE PASSED!" She cheers, then suddenly becomes very nervous. "But I might've done something stupid."

Koda shuffles ahead of us so as to not eavesdrop as we make our way to Recovery Girl's makeshift office.

"During our exam…" my short friend trails off, her face rising in a blush. She continues in a hushed whisper, "...I was thinking I should approach the fight as Deku would. We were pretty much cornered and out of ideas. Somehow...I don't know. I guess Aoyama knew what I was thinking and he said I have a crush on Deku. I lost focus and nearly cost us the match." She starts giggling nervously, her entire body shaking. "But that's just crazy, right? I mean...me? Like Deku? That's insane!"

I cut her off with a smirk. "Thou doth protest too much, me thinks," I illuse in a very posh British accent.

"Nonononononono!!" She insists, accidentally activating her quirk. I grab onto her wrist and drag her down the hallways.

When we reach the door to Recovery Girl's office, I let her go. "Might wanna get control over that before anyone else sees you."

She squeaks and let's herself drop to the ground, following me in with a red face.

"Hey Koto," Momo says over her shoulder, then looking back to the fight of Snipe versus Shoji and Hagakure. "That was a very interesting match. Good job."

"Yes, Uraraka translated your strategy to us," Iida pipes up from the front of the room. "It was impressive all around."

I'm distracted when the screens fill with smoke, all three people completely blocked from our view. How are they allowing a teacher to blindly shoot real bullets at his students, I think in horror.

The smoke eventually clears and we can see Snipe waving frantically while Shoji watches on, an invisible Hagakure holding onto the handcuffs binding our teacher. He seems panicked, but why, I can't be sure.

"Team Hagakure and Shoji have passed the exam," the announcer says.

"It's just as I expected," Momo gushes. "Hagakure's the best there is at stealth ops."

"And Shoji had the guts to face Mr. Snipe head on," Midoriya adds, "and be their distraction!"

Okay, I must've been looking at the wrong screen. How could they see any of that through the smoke? Or did they just gather that from the positions the three were in at the end? Seems likely for Momo and Midoriya.

At the end of the day, all of us have passed except four; Sato, Eijiro, Mina, and Kaminari. I guess Mineta got through with a passing grade, but it doesn't matter anymore. I'm still in shock from Midoriya and Bakugo's fight. I really hadn't expected them to work together and win, especially after Bakugo bitch slapped the poor boy, but they came up with a good strategy and came out of the fight alive.

Alive, but barely. They're both carted into the infirmary on gurneys, Bakugo completely unconscious. After changing back into my UA uniform, I head there, leaving my other classmates behind.

"Is your ear bugging you, dear?" Recovery Girl asks. I shake my head.

"No," I illuse, looking to the ash blonde on one of the hospital beds. "It's that idiot over there."

She lets out a "hmph," narrowing her eyes at him. "His quirk is very self destructive. Even after my healing, his muscles won't stop twitching."

I had noticed this during the fight. Since his gauntlets got destroyed, his arms were susceptible to much worse damage. Damage akin to that he had suffered in the Sports Festival.

"I can use my quirk to calm somebody's muscles," I illuse a bit sheepishly. "I've used it on him before and it seems to work to counteract his quirk's backlash on his muscles and tendons. Could I give it a try?"

The stout old woman glances me up and down, seeming to search for any ulterior motive. She can't seem to find one because she just shrugs and motions towards the unconscious boy. "Go for it. I'll of course have to supervise, but I don't see why not."

I nod and walk to his side. I can see that his muscles are twitching, but it's hard to pinpoint where exactly with his glove on.

I know that Echolocation works in rooms, through the air, and can be activated through walls, but would I be able to operate it within a person? Of course I can create sound to travel through solids, liquids, and gases. Maybe if I try to be gentle, I could manage it.

Very conscious that doing this could make his body react, I slip my right hand into his to hold it down. The last thing I need is to trigger a muscle spasm and have him slap me across the face. I place my left hand on the soft skin of his bare arm. Closing my eyes and focusing to only create the softest sound possible, I activate Echolocation.

The reaction is immediate. It's as if an entire image of him appears in my brain, but it's not necessarily a vision. I feel like a mole, blind, but using my other senses to be aware of my surroundings. I gasp and pull my hand away, breaking the connection. I look up at Recovery Girl, but she seems confused at my sudden reaction. I guess everything seemed normal from her side.

I set my hand back on his arm and activate my power once again, feeling the blood flow through his veins and arteries. Trying my hardest to ignore the lower half of his body, which is literally impossible since I'm activating my quirk on his entire body, I quickly locate the most agitated areas on his arms and apply pinpricks of sound to soothe them.

I notice a tense area on the palm of his hands, right at the base. Curious, I apply a small wave of sound to the area on his right hand, the one I'm holding, but the sharp pain I feel causes me to draw back.

My eyes snap open as I release my power. The boy's glove glows orange, an indication that he just used his quirk. Huh, I guess that's how he activates the spark, I think to myself, clutching my burnt hand.

"Oh dear," the old lady says, walking over to me. "Let me have a look at that."

I extend my hand towards her. She examines it, then places a kiss right on the palm. Immediately, the red blister begins to fade and the pain subsides. I sigh in relief, my eyelids drooping.

"Feel free to stick around. I'm sure someone else wants to see you when he wakes up." She walks to a curtain and pulls it open, revealing Uncle Mic, unconscious on a bed.

Sorry, Mic.

I walk over and close the curtain behind us, sitting down next to his bed. I pull out my phone, texting Ochaco that I'm waiting with Mic and won't be out for a while.

Eventually, I hear All Might come in and Recovery Girl chastises him for being so reckless with the two boys. I have to agree with her and it's extremely funny to listen to the number one hero be so intimidated by the tiny woman.

When he begins to address the boys, I put in my headphones, not wanting to eavesdrop where I'm not wanted.

I text Eijiro for a while. He's disappointed in himself for failing and I can't blame him. They fell unconscious extremely quickly. And yet, I assure him that Cementos was probably one of the hardest teachers to go up against. Especially since they put them in a cityscape which was clearly to the pro's advantage.

I'm in the middle of gushing about how happy I am that Mineta is getting expelled when the curtain is pushed open. I jump, pausing my music and taking out my headphones when I see Recovery Girl and a familiar mother looking in.

"Hello dear," the old woman says. "Sorry to bother you, but I was hoping you could help Mrs. Bakugo carry her son to her car. He's going to be out for a while and he should be home to recover."

I stand, nodding, and follow Mitsuki as she walks over to the bed with her son on it. I grab his legs while she lifts his torso after throwing his backpack on. I wonder when someone brought that. She's surprisingly strong for a woman of her stature, but I'm not going to point that out out loud.

"I hope my little shithead didn't get into a fight with you again," she says as we walk down the hallway.

"No no," I illuse. "The finals were just that extreme."

Her eyes widen, but she quickly seems to remember that this is common behavior from me, using my quirk to speak. "So who did he get into a fight with?"

Ahh, mother's intuition. There's nothing like it. "Well, he was pitted against All Might with Izuku Midoriya as his partner."

She sighs, kicking open the front doors of the building. "Oh that poor child. Katsuki's been terrorizing him for years. I'm sure that's why he was also in the nurse's office?" She fishes her car keys out of her pocket while somehow still holding onto her son.

I nod, illusing, "they were mainly fighting each other at the beginning and didn't seem to be working together. All Might was the one that dealt the worst blows, though. I'm not gonna lie, it was terrifying to watch."

She regards me with hard, calculating eyes, so much like her son's. "So you're friends with him, huh?" She asks after a moment, unlocking her car. "He won't tell me anything, but after you asked me about his birthday, I can assume you're not just some classmate he got into a petty fight with."

I sigh, putting the boy's feet down so Mitsuki can lean him against the car. "I mean, we tolerate each other if you can even call it that. I tease him and he yells at me, but that's his normal behavior with everyone, I'd say."

The woman picks up her son with surprising ease and sets him down in the passenger seat of her mini van. She buckles him in and turns back to me, slamming the door. I cringe at the sound, but Bakugo doesn't wake up. "I'm not sure that explains why he's been learning sign language. That's not something he'd do for just anyone."

I sigh, shaking my head. If this woman is thinking what I think she is, she couldn't be more wrong. "Everybody else was learning and he probably wanted to prove he was better than them. Isn't it his goal to be number one?"

Though that doesn't explain why he was denying knowing what we were talking about, I think, but brush the thought off.

"He doesn't want to be number one unless the prize is worth it. What did he see the prize as?" She asks with a smug grin. The mere resemblance to her son pisses me of so much I have to remind myself I'm not talking to him. I'm talking to an adult and should speak with respect, not snide remarks.

"Being better than Kaminari," I answer simply. "Considering they'll take any chance to insult each other, I'd say it's pretty reasonable."

She just narrows her eyes at me, but shrugs it off. "I don't recognize that name, but then again, Katsuki doesn't use people's names, now does he? What does he call him?"

"Dunce Face or Pikachu," I illuse in Bakugo's voice, conveniently leaving out the fact that he had used my real name once. His mother's lips turn up in a grin.

"Yeah, that checks out." She walks around to the other side of the car and climbs in. "I guess I'll see you around. Let me know when you need more blackmail pictures of the trashbag."

And with that, she closes the door and peals off. I watch after the car for a second before turning back to the building. I head inside to see if Mic's woken up yet, pulling out my phone as I go to continue my conversation with Eijiro.
