Chapter 37: Rescue Training and Mineta's Antics

In hero class, we meet out at a training ground designed to look like an industrial park, metal pipes and smokestacks littering the area. We gather in front of the large doors. I stand at the front of the group for a change, between Todoroki and Kirishima.

"I am here!" Our teacher declares, standing in front of our class. "Hope you're ready to return to our lessons! Today, it's hero basic training! Feels like I haven't seen you in a while! Welcome back!"

I nod in his direction, as do a few others, excited to be in the number one hero's presence again.

"Now then, listen carefully for what's in store," he continues. "We're going to be conducting a little race! Take everything you've learned from your internships and apply it to this rescue training!"

Oh dear, we really didn't do too much with our quirks at Nyikang's agency. I mean, of course I worked on it for a while when Shinso was still in the hospital, but that was to act more as a weapon than something to be used in rescue.

Iida raises his hand, "If it's rescue training, then shouldn't we be at the USJ instead?"

"Ah," our teacher responds, "that facility specializes in disasters. As I said earlier, this is a race. So, prepare! You're about to step into Field Gamma! Inside is an area full of factories that form an intricate labyrinth. So, good luck finding your way around! You'll be competing in groups of five, each person starts from a different location on the outskirts of the model city. I'll send a distress signal and you do what you must to rescue me. Whoever finds me first wins! But try to keep the property damage to a bare minimum please."

The hero glances over to the side, his finger pointed. I follow his eyeline to see who he's looking at. "Why're you pointing at me?" Bakugo growls, looking away.

All Might doesn't even bother to answer, instead showing us a projection of how the groups are split up. "Alright! First group, get to your places!"

I walk with the rest of the class to the giant monitor as Midoriya, Iida, Ojiro, Mina, and Sero take their places. I take a seat on the ground between Ochaco and Yaoyorozu, who has insisted that I call her Momo. At this point, all the girls in the class have formed a little group and insisted they all use their first names. I only said they could use mine because I felt out of place, but oh well. Having a few more friends can't hurt.

Our classmates discuss the logistics of who is most likely to win, but my eyes keep drifting over to Todoroki. He hasn't really made an effort to acknowledge me since hero training has started, but I try to tell myself that he's just focusing on the trials ahead. It's not that different from how he usually acts, so I try not to feel too bummed out. I know I shouldn't freak out. He's not used to having friends and we haven't really had an opportunity to talk anyway.

All Might calls for the five to begin and immediately, they all take off. Mina uses acid to slide quickly across the ground while Sero uses his tape to project himself into the air. I can't help but think the way he uses his quirk to travel is similar to Spiderman. Ah, Tom Holland. Yet another childhood crush, I think wistfully. I was born at the wrong time.

I force myself to watch and focus on the match. I notice Iida and Ojiro are moving fast and efficiently working around the terrain, but I'm shocked by Midoriya's progress. I know he had said in the hospital room that he had improved his quirk usage, but he really wasn't kidding! His whole body seems to glow green, almost radioactively, with bright green sparks coming off of him as he jumps from obstacle to obstacle.

Radioactive. Huh, I gotta remember that. I make a mental note. I have a weird habit of matching my friends to songs I think fit them. That in and of itself might not be too weird, but the weird part is that I keep a list. An actual physical list in a journal. And that's not the only thing I keep in there. Sometimes I'll make entries about how I feel that day, described only through songs. To anyone else, reading it might seem disjointed and confusing, but I understand it. I keep the leather-bound book between my mattress and bedframe. Since I do my own laundry, Mic never had a reason to go into my room, so nobody knows about it. I'd been contemplating over Midoriya's song for a while, but I think Radioactive would fit.

The whole class gasps as Midoriya takes the lead. "Crazy," Ochaco whispers to herself. "He looks just like…"

I glance over at Bakugo as she trails off, knowing exactly who she's thinking of. His shoulders tense as his scowl deepens to a dangerous level. Any other time, I would illuse sound to relax his muscles, just to piss him off, but today, that might just send me home in a body bag.

My eyes turn to the screen that shows Midoriya jumping and flipping through the air. I'm sure that everyone else would be looking from screen to screen to watch our other classmates, but right now, we're all pretty distracted by Midoriya's new grasp of his power.

Almost as though Bakugo's glare tripped him through the screen, Midoriya lands wrong on a pipe, slipping off and landing flat on his face.

Just at that moment, Sero lands heroically next to All Might who presents him with a sash and commends them on their improvement. At the end of his speech, he calls group two to their places.

I walk to my spot and prepare myself to face off against Tsu, Aoyama, Mineta, and Bakugo.

I'm sure that, competing right after Midoriya, Bakugo must be a little distracted. Especially since he has to know the whole class will be watching him to see the similarities in their performances. That doesn't mean he's any less of a formidable opponent though. I need to keep an eye out for him. He's still unpredictable and incredibly gifted at adapting to his situation. Midoriya's sudden improvement will give him even more incentive to crush this task.

I shake out my feet, doing a few stretches while taking deep breaths. My lungs don't still sting from the smoke inhalation, but they're a bit sore and sometimes, in my costume that requires a corset, I find myself out of breath easily. I need to know my limit. Running this course is gonna be difficult, but I have to push my hardest. Nobody else is going to hold back, so I can't let myself either.

"READYYYYY...START!" All Might calls, making an alarm sound from somewhere in the middle of the field.

Immediately, I find the tallest smokestack near me and illuse heavy bass drums under my feet while I climb the ladder on the side, taking the rungs ten at a time. I glance around to get a view of where our teacher is. The moment I'm high enough in the air to see his blue cape, I push hard off the ladder, sending myself shooting towards him.

I recognize that constantly illusing around myself to fly over will drain my endurance much faster than I would like. To save my energy, I pull my knees up to my chest as I feel myself starting to descend and illuse another bass drum tone under my feet as I extend my legs. I'm sure this makes me appear like Tsu hopping across air, but it's getting me closer to All Might.

Speaking of Tsu, I catch a glimpse of her hopping easily across the terrain, using her tongue to swing herself up into the air to check her trajectory. She isn't the only one I can see, though. Mineta and Aoyama are also making their way through the pipes and factories, but not as quickly. Bakugo, on the other hand, is speeding through the air towards All Might, propelled by the force of his explosions.

Knowing I'll either have to step up the amplitude of my sound or risk losing, I readily extend my whole body into a plank, illusing steady white noise under me to keep me airborne as I illuse a bass drum roll on my heels. Whenever I use white noise, it's generally to move something that's so heavy that if I used a more audible tone, somebody's eardrums may burst. Now, I'm not saying I'm very heavy, in fact I resemble more of a skeleton, but white noise seems like my best bet.

"Watch out, ribbit!" I hear from my left. I look over to see Tsu, eyes wide, staring at my other side. Before I can process it, something hits my upper thigh. I look down to see one of Mineta's purple balls stuck to me. I cringe in disgust before I realize it's not the only thing coming in my direction.

The small boy is heading right towards me, I'm sure to use me as a springboard to get closer to our teacher.

Suddenly, Tsu's tongue wraps tightly around my waist and pulls me out of his trajectory, but also distracts me from my illusing and tugs tight. The action forces the air from my lungs and makes my vision go blurry. I quickly find myself falling, but she flings me forward as she lands on a pipe, also sending herself forward. I illuse as best I can to make it to the water tower All Might is standing on, but I can only make it to the ladder before I start to feel really woozy. I climb as quickly as I can, but I hear our teacher's jovial tone above me. "Congratulations on reaching me first!"

"Pfft, whatever," Bakugo's voice growls. I scoff, finally reaching the top of the tower with shaky breaths. I notice Tsu is already here as well, but Mineta and Aoyama are still making their way up.

"Are you okay?" Tsu asks, turning to look at me in concern as I hold myself up on the railing with wheezing breaths. I close my eyes and nod, taking deep breaths to get enough oxygen to my lungs.

I hear Mineta and Aoyama land on the top as well. I open my eyes and walk over to where my classmates are lining up. I notice everyone's eyes on me, looking for some explanation. I sigh, illusing, "I suffered from smoke inhalation during my internship. I'm fine, but the corset isn't helping."

Immediately, I sense an ugly presence sidling up behind me. "I could help loosen that for ya," Mineta croons.

Without a second thought, Tsu and I turn around, using our combined powers to throw him back into the railing as hard as we can manage. The resulting sound of his head meeting the metal makes me feel a little better. We share a glance, silently saying we would've thrown him off the roof entirely if our teacher hadn't been here.

Later, as we enter the locker rooms, I unclip the front of my corset the moment I walk through the door, letting out a deep breath with it. I still have that stupid little midget's grape ball stuck to my leg, but he said it will dissolve soon, so I peel off my bodysuit once I'm in the corner, trying to avoid letting anything else touch it as I fold the fabric up and place it in the case. Staying facing my corner locker, I instantly put on my choker, being sure to cover my scar before turning to listen to the rest of the girl's gossip. Only, they don't seem to be chatting like normal, instead listening to something happening next door in the boy's locker room.

"...CAUSE YOU CAN'T STOP ME!!" Mineta's perverted voice calls from the other side. I notice they're all staring warily at a hole drilled in the wall. What? There's a peephole? That's so gross!!

"I want to see Yaoyorozu's curves! Ashido's slender waist! Hagakure's floating underwear!" As he talks, I stomp angrily over to the wall, placing my hands on it and activating my quirk into the concrete. I know that using Echolocation would be technically as bad as what Mineta is doing, seeing as the sound would flow completely between the two rooms and I would be able to sense everything in their room as well as ours. And even though that happens anyway when I activate it, seeing as most clothes aren't exactly umm...soundproof, I know that now isn't the best time for everyone to find that out. Of course, I usually just try to ignore people's bodies anyway when it comes down to it. Although I am very curious what Hagakure's face looks like. I might get her permission one day to try.

I can feel through the wall where Mineta's hands are touching it. The entire side of his head is pressed up against the wall, surely to try and get a better view through the hole. "Uraraka's super-fine body! Asui's unexpectedly soft-"

Before he can continue, I illuse the loudest blast I can, without damaging all the boy's eardrums permanently, right against where his head is pressed. I hear loud screaming from the other side, mostly from Mineta, then a metallic smash. Well at least I know that didn't kill him. I don't need that on my plate even though it would do us all a favor. Oof, why am I sounding like Bakugo all of a sudden?

I shake it off and head back to my locker, slipping my hands through my shirt and buttoning it. Why did he have to list us in order of chest size? I think morosely. I mean, I know I'm not exactly full chested like Yaoyorozu, but it still hurts to know he's ranked us like that in his mind.

"Eugh," Toru cringes. "Thanks, Koto."

"Despicable," Momo scoffs, looking over at the breach in the wall with disdain. "We'll close up this hole immediately."

She walks over, creating a bit of a putty like substance in her hand and smearing it over the wall, sealing the hole. Entirely silent, we continue changing and walk back to class, huddling together in a group.

"Hey guys," Kirishima calls out behind us. He rushes to catch up with our group with a solemn look on his face. "Iida took Mineta to Principal Nezu's office. I'm really sorry about that back there. It just happened so quickly, none of us could stop him."

"It wasn't your fault, Kirishima," Toru says, trying to make her voice sound lighter than she's certainly feeling.

"Yeah," Momo adds. "It wasn't you who was peeping."

My redhead friend clenches a fist to his chest, looking away with a tear in his eye. "But it was so unmanly that none of us stopped him. It makes all of us just as bad!"

"Hey now!" Sato interjects, catching up to us as well. "It's not like we had time to. As soon as we figured out what was happening, Yamada had already taken care of it!"

"You're right," Kirishima says, becoming cheerful once more. "You should've seen how fast he flew away! He dented the lockers with how hard he hit 'em!"

"There was a chunk taken outta the wall and everything! We'll need to get Cementos in there to fix it so Mineta doesn't get any ideas about tunneling over himself," Sato adds, scratching the back of his neck.

Huh, I took an entire chunk out of the wall? I guess my anger was really clouding my judgement. Either way, if that freak got a concussion, it'll be well worth it.

Back in the classroom, Aizawa calls us all to sit as he says a few more announcements that he didn't get to this morning. "Well, it's almost time for summer vacation. Don't get too excited. You can't just relax an entire month."

"Does that mean…" Kaminari trails off in pure horror.

"You'll be training," our teacher says, "while you're camping in the woods." Instantly, the classroom breaks out into cheers as my classmates discuss excitedly everything they're planning on doing while at camp. Aizawa activates his quirk to calm us down, "however...those of you who don't pass the final exam before the semester is over will have summer school."

Kirishima turns to glance around at his classmates, saying determinedly, "everyone, do your best!"

"This is so stupid," Bakugo growls while Mineta exclaims that all the girls better pass.

I can't believe he's still here! Nezu was already thinking about transferring him and even this didn't push him over the edge?!? Shinso deserves this position so much more than Mineta.

I illuse high frequency sounds into the idiot's head again, hoping I can give him a headache by the time class is out. Sure enough, when Mr. Aizawa dismisses us, he is rubbing his bandaged temples.

"Hey man, should you head back to Recovery Girl?" Kaminari asks, going up to Mineta's desk. I'll never understand how he can be friends with that pervert.

"Ugh...I don't know if it's the concussion or just stress 'cause I've been getting really bad migraines lately," he says, standing up and collecting his stuff.

Momo looks up at him from where she's packing her things and glances over at me. I send a small wink her way and to my surprise, she signs, "thank you," with a soft smile.

Suddenly, a pink arm is slung over my shoulder as Mina pulls me to her side. "Thanks again, Koto!"

I smile shyly at both of them as I grab my canvas backpack. Since when did Momo know sign language?

Mina and I walk to the door. She removes her arm from my shoulders to get through first while I trail behind.

"Hey," Ochaco says, running up to walk by my side. "Movie and bonfire on Friday? I'm just thinking we should do something fun before we have to buckle down and study."

I nod vigorously, wanting to spend quality time with my friend. Mina immediately whips around, hopping backwards down the hallway.

"Oooh!! A movie night! Can I come too?!?" She squeals.

Ochaco and I share a look. It would be sorta inconsiderate to tell her she can come without asking Reina first.

My friend pulls out her phone and flips it open. "I'm on it," she says, already texting Reina.

I already know what she's going to say though: "the more the merrier!" That family loves having big events. Especially movie nights when anyone and everyone is invited.

"She said it's cool," Ochaco says, looking up from her phone. "The more the merrier!"

"Yay!" Mina cheers, wrapping us both in a hug. "In that case, can the whole Bakusquad come?"

"I don't see why not," Ochaco chirps, but I can tell she is acting a little guarded. I know she still doesn't really like Bakugo, but at least the others will be there and act as a barrier.

With a smirk, I nudge her. "You should invite Midoriya," I sign, raising my eyebrows suggestively. Immediately, her face turns cherry red and she looks away.

"What?" Mina asks. She stomps her feet and pouts. "I wish I knew sign language! What did you say?!? Why were you wiggling your eyebrows?!? Why did she turn into a floating tomato?!?"

Sure enough, Ochaco has her bright red face covered and is floating above us in the hallway. "Nothing! Nothing!" She screams, trying to get her breathing under control as she floats back to the ground. "That's not funny, Koto."

"Okay, I'm sorry," I sign. "But really, he's your friend. You should invite him."

She sighs, "but then won't Iida and Todoroki feel left out?"

"Invite them too!"

"Okay I'm only piecing this together from one half of the conversation," Mina interjects, "but if you just said to invite them, then I gotta agree! It'll be so much fun with all of us!"

We make our way to our shoe lockers and grab our outdoor shoes.

Mina waves goodbye to us as Ochaco and I put our shoes on. "I'm gonna go to the bathroom before I leave, so text me the deets, kay? Later!"

With that, she runs away, leaving Ochaco and I alone. I look over to see her pouting. She delivers a swift but soft punch to my arm.

"Don't do that again," she whimpers.

I just laugh in response. "So, I have an idea for what movie to watch," I sign with a smirk. "Or should I say movies? There's gonna be so many people there, we should go with some classics to educate them."

Ochaco smiles cheerfully, seeming to forget her anger for the moment. "Ooh, I know exactly what you're thinking! And that's a definite yes!"

We stand and begin discussing what we'll need to get sorted before Friday night as we walk down the hill.

------Author's Note------

Hey guys!

What movies do you think they're gonna watch? I just might give you a shout out in the next chapter if you can guess any of them!

Also what are some of your favorite Disney movies? I definitely have the same taste in Disney stuff as Koto. I've been on Disney+ for about 2 weeks and got hit with so much nostalgia. I know that if Koto heard about Disney+, she'd freak out. I'm assuming in this world that there was something that caused the site to go down way before she was born, so she never knew about it.

Anyways, be sure to vote and comment if you enjoyed! I always love to see it!
