Chapter 12: The USJ Attack
The next day, I walk to the school with Uncle Mic yet again. As we approach, I point to a group of news vans parked on the side of the road.
"Word must've gotten out that All Might is teaching here and now the press wants to get a story on it," he says pensively as we walk past them.
A door to one of the vans opens and a reporter jumps out, eyes wide and carrying a microphone.
"Run ahead, Koto. I'll take care of them," my uncle says with a smile. He turns his dazzling smile to the reporter as I heed his words and run to the entrance.
Thankfully, I'm not followed and pass through the main gates unnoticed. They have sensors set in the doorway so that if anybody tries to get through without an ID, the school goes on lockdown.
Good thing I got in before those reporters cause a scene or something. With how many cars there were, it would be a pretty sizable crowd.
I walk to the 1-A classroom and sit down, listening to my music once again and waiting for my classmates. They slowly trickle in, sitting at their desks and talking with friends. Kirishima shoots me a smile as he walks in and I give a small one in response. His eyes widen slightly, but my act makes his grin widen even more.
"Hey there, Yamada!" He says, sitting in his seat in front of mine. I pull out my right headphone to hear him better. "Whatchu listening to?" I open my phone and turn it around for him to look at the screen that shows Piano Man by Billy Joel.
His eyebrows furrow for a moment as he appears to think. "Never heard that one before. You should illuse it sometime for us. Of course if that's okay with you!" He adds hastily. "I sorta caught on that you don't really like all the attention we were giving you yesterday and I'm sorry. I guess I just didn't realize."
"That's okay," I write hastily on my whiteboard before turning it and giving him a reassuring look.
"Okay, cool. So what do you think we're gonna be doing today?" He asks, determination in his voice. He clenches his fist, looking to be ready for any task Aizawa's about to throw at us. I merely shrug in response.
Kirishima's friends, lightning boy and Sero sit down and instantly join in on the conversation. The boy with the golden hair introduces himself as Denki Kaminari.
Is that everyone in class? There's too many names, I think to myself, putting my earphone back in before class starts.
Suddenly, the door opens and our teacher walks in, sluggishly. I hastily turn off my music and put my phone away as he goes over our work from yesterday.
"Decent work on yesterday's combat training, you guys," he says in his tired voice. "I saw the video feeds and went over each team's results. Bakugo," the whole class turns to look at the boy as he continues, "you're talented, so don't sulk like a child about your loss, okay?"
"Yeah, whatever," he grunts in response.
"And Midoriya, I see the only way you won the match was by messing up your arm again." I shiver at the memory of the poor boy's arm. Goosebumps climb my arms as I hear the sound once more from years ago. I rub them shakily as I try to suppress the memory. Iida looks over at my sudden movement, but doesn't comment on it. I keep my eyes trained on our teacher. I can't bear to see the inevitable look of worry in my classmate's eyes. It makes me feel weak.
"Work harder," our teacher continues to the green haired boy. "And don't give me the excuse that you don't have control over your quirk. That line's already getting old. You can't keep breaking your body while training here. But your quirk will be really useful if you can get a handle on it. So show a little urgency, huh?"
"Right!" Midoriya replies with a new sense of determination. I notice Bakugo's shoulders tense at the words.
"Let's get down to business," Mr. Aizawa addresses the whole class as we sit on the edge of our seats. "Our first task will decide your future. You all need to pick a class representative."
A sigh of relief is released over the whole room. Before I know it, Kirishima is out of his seat.
"Pick me, guys!" He shouts. "I wanna be class rep!"
"I'll take it!" Kaminari raises his hand.
Yaoyorozu also raises her hand, "yeah, we're gonna need me." Wow that's straightforward.
The whole class expresses their interest except for me and a select few. Todoroki looks to be half asleep. I look behind me to the right at my friend who also is raising her hands excitedly. Even Bakugo is screaming for people to pick him.
"Silence, everyone! Please!" Iida's loud voice demands. The class falls silent and looks over at him. "The class representative's duty is to lead others. That's not something just anyone can do! You must first have the trust of every student in the classroom. Therefore, the most logical way to fill this position is democratically. We will hold an election to choose our leader."
"It's pretty obvious you want us to vote for you," many people say, but he doesn't seem fazed by it. Aizawa allows it and zips up his sleeping bag, falling to sleep at the front of the room. We all pull out a piece of paper and write our choice on it. After a while of thinking, I write my vote down, then fold the paper and put it at the front.
After all the votes are counted, the results are written on the board, revealing Midoriya in first and Yaoyorozu in second, making them co-class reps. The boy seems shocked by these results, eyes wide.
"Alright you idiots!" Bakugo stands up in rage. "Who voted for him?!?"
"What? Did you honestly think anyone was gonna vote for you?" Sero asks with amusement in his voice.
I'm pretty sure I know who voted for Midoriya, I think to myself, looking over at Ochaco as she avoids eye contact with the blonde.
"WHAT DID YOU SAY?!? DO YOU WANNA GO?!?" Bakugo lives up to his explosive nature, causing a scene as Iida mumbles to himself about getting no votes. Yaoyorozu and Sato comment on how he shouldn't have voted for someone else if he really wanted to win.
Aizawa wakes from his nap and calls the reps up front, announcing Midoriya and Yaoyorozu as class rep and deputy. The class expresses their approval as Iida quietly sulks in his chair and the lessons begin as usual.
At lunch, I sit at my now regular table with everyone else except Aoyama who has floated over to another table. It didn't seem like he really fit with us anyway, but he seems chill enough. Sure, he's eccentric, but I hope we didn't do anything to scare him off. Mineta, additionally didn't feel like he was getting anywhere with me, so he thankfully relocated to the table next to the other girls from our class.
Kirishima gives me a friendly smile as he walks past our table with a tray of food. The edges of my mouth lift ever so slightly. He's really not that bad. Maybe I'll be friends with him! I could sit with him tomorrow, maybe. I watch him walk over to his table and my smile falls. Bakugo was watching the whole exchange and smacks the redheaded boy on the back of the head.
If he's sitting with Bakugo, that's not exactly the place I want to be. But it doesn't seem like he's much friendlier with Kirishima than he was with me.
"Why were you smiling at that extra?!?" His angry growl reaches my table and I look away.
"Relax, dude!" The boy's upbeat tone says. "She's a friend!"
My eyes widen at his ability to stay so calm with the living, breathing explosion yelling at him and hitting his head. Though I guess his hardening quirk helps protect him from that.
I tune back in to the conversation between Tokoyami and Sato as a loud siren rings out from the speakers, alerting us of a security breach. Everybody stands and begins evacuating the cafeteria as I look around confused. Ojiro turns back to me and beckons for me to follow. Still confused, I stand and am immediately swept away by the tide of students.
I lose sight of the blonde haired boy and just carry on with everyone else. The students push each other in the hallway, trying to reach the exit door. Somebody elbows me in the throat and I begin coughing, putting my arms up to protect my face, but I am being pushed back and forth by all the other students. Another elbow hits my ribs and yet another hits my back.
Tears well up in my eyes from the sheer number of people around me. I peek through my fingers and my eyes meet a pair of ruby ones, sparkling with annoyance. He looks away quickly, continuing to fight the tide.
Looking around for any other savior, I hear a voice call out, "Shoji! Over there!" I turn in the direction of the voice, but before I know it, I'm being lifted off the ground and onto the shoulders of the giant six-armed boy.
I wrap my arms around his neck as he carries me towards the exit, one of his hands morphing into a mouth. "Are you okay, Yamada?"
I only now notice how much I'm shaking and take some deep breaths, nodding ever so slightly while wiping my eyes. The force of all the other students pushing and shoving doesn't seem to have as much of an effect on him as it did with me. A figure shoots out from the crowd and lands just over the exit door.
Iida!
"Listen up! Everything is okay!" His commanding voice stops the students in their tracks. "It's just the media outside! There's absolutely nothing to worry about! Everything's fine! We're UA students! We need to remain calm and prove that we're the best of the best!" Relief ripples through the crowd at his words and Shoji puts me down, keeping an arm wrapped around me.
"Do you think you'll be alright?" He asks. I nod and remove myself from his grasp.
"KOTO!" A high pitch voice yells as the crowd begins moving again, more calmly. I turn just in time for Ochaco to barrel into me. "Are you okay?!? I know how much you hate crowds!!! Are you hurt?!?"
I surprise myself by chuckling at her antics, causing me to cough a bit from the blow to the throat. She pulls back and I sign, "yeah, I'm fine."
She smiles and takes my arm as we continue down the hallway with the rest of the students. Eventually, we get back to the cafeteria and back to our day.
Back in homeroom, Midoriya relinquishes his position to Iida for his leadership skills during the panic. Everyone seems okay with it, so Iida accepts the position and class continues. Aizawa announces that for our hero class, we will have a rescue class with three instructors at another location, so we grab our hero suits and get changed.
All suited and booted, we meet outside the building, Iida trying to get us to board the bus efficiently. The seats weren't arranged as planned, so his seating system is all messed up. I manage to snag a seat in the back all to myself. Todoroki sits across the aisle from me, but closes his eyes the moment the bus starts moving. I listen to my music as the ride commences and look at the window, but soon, Bakugo's voice cuts right through the sound.
"WHAT'D YOU SAY? I'LL KICK YOUR ASS!!!!" I turn to see him standing up from his seat, glaring at Tsu.
Wait...Tsu? She's like one of the quietest people here. Why would he be angry at her?
I remove an earphone to listen in.
"You see?" She asks with a smile, pointing at him. I commend her for being so calm under his glare.
Kaminari smirks at his anger and adds, "ya know, we basically just met you, so it's kinda telling that we all know your personality is flaming crap mixed with garbage."
That seems to be a common theme with this class. The only person who seems to be genuinely scared of him is Midoriya. The rest of us don't seem to be as intimidated. Sure he's terrifying, but his threats are empty for the most part. I really wonder what happened between those two.
Bakugo turns his attention to lightning boy. "YOU'RE GOING TO REGRET THE DAY YOU APPLIED TO THIS SCHOOL, LOSER! I'LL KILL YOU!!"
People continue conversing about the explosive boy until Mr. Aizawa speaks up from the front of the bus as it begins to slow down, "hey, hey! We're here. Stop messing around."
"Yes sir!" The whole class replies.
We exit the bus as a hero in a spacesuit comes out of the hemisphere shaped building to greet us. I recognize them from a poster in Ochaco's bedroom: Thirteen, the space hero.
The pro guides us into the building called the USJ, short for the Unforseen Simulation Joint. I can't help but be reminded of Universal Studios Japan. The whole place looks like an amusement park with how the separate areas are all set up. There's a landslide zone, a fire zone, and many others that resemble disaster areas.
Our teachers discuss the absence of All Might, who was supposed to be here with us. Thirteen says he did too much hero work on the way in, while holding up three fingers. I glance around and everyone else appears to be just as confused. How could he have done too much this morning? He's the number one hero and should be able to hold out for longer than that.
Thirteen continues with their speech. "Listen carefully. I'm sure you're aware that I have a powerful quirk. It's called Black Hole. I can use it to suck up anything and turn it into dust."
"Yeah, you've used Black Hole to save people from all kinds of disasters before, haven't you?" Midoriya asks while Ochaco nods her head excitedly at the pro hero's words.
"That's true, but my quirk could also very easily be used to kill." Our jaws all drop. That came out of nowhere. "Some of you also have powers that can be dangerous. In our superhuman society, all quirks are certified and stringently regulated, so we often overlook how unsafe they can actually be. Please don't forget that if you lose focus or make the wrong nice, your powers can be deadly. Even if you're trying to do something virtuous like rescue someone. Thanks to Aizawa's fitness test, you have a solid idea of your quirk's potential. And because of All Might's combat training, you likely experienced how dangerous your powers can be when used against other people. Carry those lessons over to this class. Today, you're going to learn to use your quirks to save people's lives. You won't be using your powers to attack enemies or each other, only to help. After all, that's what being a hero is all about. Ensuring the safety of others. That's all I have to say. Thank you so much for listening."
The pro bows and gestures to the facility behind them. Aizawa begins speaking, but all the lights flicker out. A purple dusty blob appears in the middle of the building, growing larger and larger by the second. My heart rate picks up and I look on in confusion as the class tries to figure out what's happening, though the teachers seen equally as confused.
Suddenly, yellow, glowing eyes appear in the mist and a figure steps out, though it's too far away to see who it is.
Aizawa instructs us to stay back with Thirteen while he goes and fights whoever is coming through the portal. More people file through the purple fog and the class starts asking if it's real or just part of our training.
He wouldn't tell us to stay back if this was training. I think we're in danger.
"This is real. Those are villains," our teacher says, placing his yellow goggles over his eyes. We discuss with the teachers how the villains might have gotten in past the sensors, but come up blank. Todoroki points out that this attack must have been thought out carefully and Kaminari uses his quirk to try and contact the school. Aizawa turns back to the villains and, despite Midoriya's words of doubt, jumps down the stairs to the main floor of the USJ.
The class gasps as our teacher rushes into battle, activating his quirk to cancel out the villains' quirks while he fights with his scarf to take them down.
Wow he's a really impressive fighter, I think as he takes them out one by one. The man who walked through first stays by the center with a giant bird thing and his accomplice who appears to be made out of whatever mist was creating the portal.
Thirteen ushers us to the exit, but it's soon blocked by the purple fog, indicating the portal guy has moved into our path.
"There is no escape for you," he says in a deep voice. "It's a pleasure to meet you. We are the League of Villains. I know it's impolite, but we decided to invite ourselves into this haven of Justice to say hello. And besides, isn't this a fitting place for All Might, the symbol of peace, to take his last breath?"
What? The whole class gasps and recoils at his words. They're going to try and kill All Might? Surely not! He's the best hero there is! He has to be able to take them all down easily! The students around me stand their ground and get ready to fight. I do the same, yet I don't know how much help my quirk would be against someone like him. Especially if he doesn't have an actual body under that mist.
"I believe he was supposed to be here today and yet I see no sign of him. There must have been some sort of change in plans we could not have foreseen. Ah well, in the end, I suppose it doesn't matter. I still have a role to play." He widens what appear to be arms, trying to engulf us in the portal, but Thirteen flicks open one of the fingers on their gloves to suck in the purple dust. It's too late though.
My eyes widen at Bakugo and Kirishima take things into their own hands, flying forward to attack the villain physically. They have to know that can't work, right?
Bakugo lets out a large blast and suddenly, we're all covered in ash and dust.
"Did you think we were just gonna stand around and let you tear this place to shreds?" Kirishima's voice says from somewhere ahead, but the dust hasn't all cleared yet, so we can't see what's happening.
"You live up to your school's reputation," the deep voice of the portal villain says smoothly from the same location he was before. "But you should be more careful, children. Otherwise, someone might get hurt."
The view finally clears and I see Thirteen standing between us and the villain, yelling at the two boys to get back, but they don't listen in time. The villain speaks of scattering us across the facility to deal with villains on our own and suddenly, the purple completely engulfs us. I feel completely useless as I swing my arms around, trying to clear it away as I hear the cries of my classmates.
Suddenly, a force hits me and I'm knocked out of the violet cloud. My eyes welcome the light as they adjust to see Iida with his arms around me, Sato, and Ochaco.
He freed us from the portal, but what about everyone else?
"What's going on?!?" He asks, alarmed. I look around the USJ and notice portals popping up all around with people flying out from them, though they're too far away to make out who is who.
The cloud finally retracts and I see that Thirteen, Shoji, Ashido, and Sero are also here with us. We all take up a fighting stance, getting ready to put up a fight.
Thirteen instructs Shoji to figure out where the others are and he extends his arms behind him, not taking his main eyes off the villain, but keeping his others looking for our classmates.
"They've been scattered across the facility. Our classmates are still here." The rest of us sigh with relief as we pay our full attention to the villain in front of us. I'm not sure any of us have a quirk that can fight him. Except for Thirteen, but Black Hole will destroy him. Shouldn't our main goal be to capture him and gather intel on the League?
"Class rep," the hero says, addressing Iida. "I have a job for you. Run to the school and tell the faculty what's going on here. The alarms aren't sounding. And our phones and radio are useless right now. One of these villains must be to blame. Even though Eraserhead is cancelling people's quirks left and right, we're still completely sealed off from the outside world. Likely whoever's causing this interference hid as soon as they warped into the USJ. They could be anywhere. Impossible to find out. It will be faster for you to run and get help than for us to find whoever's jamming everything."
He steps forward, alarmed. "Yes, but... It would be disgraceful for me to leave you all behind!"
"Go, Emergency Exit," Sato calls to him, using his new nickname. "There are lots of alarms outside. That's why they're keeping all of us trapped inside the USJ, right?"
Sero steps to Sato's side, ready to defend against the portal villain. "As long as you can get outside, they won't follow," he points an elbow menacingly at the man in front of us. "Blow this stupid mist away with those engine legs!"
As though my feet act by themselves, I find myself standing next to my male classmates. "I believe you can do it," I sign, also preparing to fight.
"Yamada believes in you, and so do I, Iida!" Ochaco comes to stand by my side. We glance at each other and, with determination in our eyes, turn back to our main focus.
"Use your quirk to save others! Be a real hero!" Thirteen urges.
"I can help you out!" Ochaco says with fire in her eyes. "Just like I did when I floated you in the cafeteria! Okay? No prob! Please, class rep! Do it!"
The blue haired boy powers up his engines as the portal man gets ready to strike. "Even if this is your only option, are you really foolish enough to strategize in front of your enemy?"
The mist lashes out at us, but Thirteen has already begun sucking it into the finger of their glove and using their quirk, however the villain continues with his soliloquy, not sounding fazed.
"Ah, Black Hole. The quirk that sucks up matter and turns it to dust. Such an astounding power. However, you're a rescue hero, Thirteen. Skilled at saving people from disasters. Consequently, that means you have little fighting experience or battlefield awareness."
A warp gate opens from behind Thirteen, causing them to use their own power against themself. Their space suit crumbles, leaving the hero exposed to the effects of Black Hole.
"I'm sorry..." they groan as the pro falls to the floor. "He got me."
Our classmates implore Iida to run and he finally listens to us, barely avoiding a gate that opens in front of him. Shoji throws himself onto the cloud of purple dust, covering it with the webbing between his arms and tackling it to the ground.
"Run!" He shouts to the boy as he falls to the ground, trying to contain it. "I've got him!"
"You impertinent child!!" The man rages as he sends out more of the purple dust towards him.
Ochaco stands up from Thirteen's side, looking at the man. I notice it too. He appears to have metal plating underneath all the mist, implying he has some sort of body under there.
I focus onto the area encapsulated under the armor and cause it to start vibrating. For a moment, the mist stops undulating, giving Ochaco enough time to run up and grab the metal. She throws it up into the air, allowing Iida to get through unscathed.
He struggles to get through the door, allowing the villain to reach out once more towards him, but Sero shoots tape at the armor, latching onto it, and pulls the ribbon taught. Sato grabs onto it and uses his super strength to swing the man through the air and away from our classmate.
The villain returns to the center area and we all go to check on Thirteen. Massive bangs sound from the center plaza and I look over to see a horrifying sight.
The giant bird creature has hold of Mr. Aizawa and is smashing his face into the ground.
Too many broken bones! I shutter and slap my hands over my ears, though I know it will do nothing to reduce the memory playing in repeat in my head.
"Hey, are you okay?" Sero asks, putting a hand on my shoulder. I feel tears running down my cheeks, but I nod anyway, turning back to our other injured teacher and trying to assess the damages to them.
A blast of wind hits us from the core of the facility. We drop to the ground and I feel Shoji throw his arms over us. Glass smashes around us and the ground rumbles.
Who's attack was that?!?
After a few seconds when the wind dies down, we scramble to the edge of the stairs to see what's happening. It looks as though Midoriya is face to face with the giant bird monster. The creature grabs his arm and is about to pull him around when the doors to the facility smash open. Standing there, in all his glory, is All Might.
He can take down these villains. I'm sure of it! I think as some tears run down my cheeks.
"Have no fear, students. I am here." I sigh in relief as he immediately jumps down into the fight. He pushes the students aside who try to help and gets them to carry Aizawa back up the stairs. He begins punching the giant monster with all his strength.
But it doesn't look like it's doing anything!
He does a giant suplex that creates an explosion of dust and dirt, but when the view clears, he is being held onto by the creature who is halfway through a portal in the floor.
Midoriya runs to help, but the portal guy moves in front of him, opening a gate for him to pass through. Just at the last moment, Bakugo appears out of nowhere, exploding the villain and holding him down by the metal armor. The ground around them freezes as Todoroki captures the bird monster in place, stopping the ice just before it reaches All Might. Kirishima flies in, trying to get a hit on another villain, but they merely sidestep out of the way. Nevertheless, he goes to stand by his classmates, ready to attack.
All Might flips out of the monster's grasp, clutching his side. The creature seems to break the ice around him, destroying himself as he fights to stand back up. For a second, it looks like he is injured, but his wounds quickly heal.
"They're helping! Wait, is that Tsu down there?" Ochaco cries, pointing. "Hey!!!! We're all up here!!!"
The students carrying Aizawa cry for help, so her and Sato rush down to help while Ashido and I stay with Thirteen. The hero demands we hide, but I refuse to leave their side. The others get our teacher up the stairs and try to get him to a safe spot.
All Might throws punches quickly, creating gusts of wind so powerful, they push everyone to the edges of the facility.
"The only thing we can do now is protect Thirteen and Aizawa until other teachers get here," I sign to Ochaco and she nods in agreement, getting our classmates to help move them away from the broken glass and wind. Shoji puts his arms up, using the webbing in between as a screen to protect them just in case.
With one final, powerful blast, I look up to see All Might sending the bird monster through the ceiling of the building at a speed almost too fast for human eyes. My jaw drops and I turn to help the boys with getting the teachers up. Shoji puts Aizawa into a piggy back hold while Sato and Sero hold up Thirteen between them. We start walking them towards the gate, hoping the other heros will get here soon.
Our prayers are answered as a whole group of pros rushes in. Gunshots fire as some run past us and I jump out of my skin. Which of these heroes is shooting a gun?!? Others pay attention to our injured teachers and assist carrying them out of the building to an ambulance that has just arrived.
Still outside, I move to the wall and sit down, processing what just happened. We got attacked by villains and it's only our third day?!? What does this mean the rest of the year will be like? Running my hands through my hair, I take off my mask, scrunching my legs up to my chest and letting tears flow. Three of my teachers got injured just today! I know it's not my fault, but why does pain always surround me? Does the world just not want me to be happy?
Without realizing it, I let out a strangled sob. My face heats up as I look around for anyone who might have heard it, but everyone seems to be focused on the injured pros.
Am I really cut out for this job if I can't handle a little skirmish? But no, this was more than that. This was like a declaration of war! I still can't believe we had to be here for it, though. I hope everyone else who got teleported away is alright.
I wipe my eyes and suddenly feel arms around me. I practically jump out of my skin as I turn to see who it is.
"What's wrong? Are you okay?" Ochaco's voice says from where her face is buried in my shoulder. I hum to get her attention.
"Yeah I'm alright," I sign. "I just needed a moment alone. I don't know if I'm cut out for this. I could've done something to help, but I didn't!"
"Don't say that! You got all of us up on the stairs rallied to help Thirteen and Aizawa! So what, you didn't use your quirk? You're still a leader and strong! This was enough to scare anyone into a panic. I don't blame you for not helping out on the field. They beat the villains anyway! Not to mention you immobilized the warp gate guy so I could throw him into the air! It's the reason Iida was able to get help! You did so much, okay?" She wipes a tear off my cheek as I sniffle and nod.
"I'll give you a sec to compose yourself, then come meet up with us. When everyone gets back from the zones, we have to go back to UA. I don't wanna leave you here!" She says with a big smile. I give her one last hug and then she's off.
Okay, I just need to calm myself down.
I take a deep breath in.
I helped get two of the heroes to the ambulance.
And out.
That has to count for something.
In
I was too far away to do anything in the center plaza anyway.
Out
What was I supposed to do, hurt myself more than the villain?
In
That would have been stupid.
Out
It was better to let the boys who were already down there take charge.
In
Everyone will be okay.
Out
They have to be okay.
In
I have to be okay.
Out
I have to at least look okay.
In
I shouldn't be this weak.
Out
I need to hold the tears till I get home.
I wipe my hand over my eyes one last time and replace my mask. It should cover up my red eyes enough. I stand, brushing myself off, and head back to the rest of my class. We line up to do a headcount with a detective. I learn Midoriya is missing from our ranks because he used his quirk again and broke his legs, meaning he had to be sent ahead with the injured pros.
The detective speaks with some police officers, allowing us to break off into smaller groups. I hang back as Ochaco talks with Iida.
"Yeah, they messed with the wrong kids, huh?" Kirishima's confident voice speaks from over to my left. I regard the conversation with amusement as Aoyama tries to get a word in. He soon loses hope of them asking where he was and moves onto the next group.
Seeing this as my escape from the Frenchie's line of baiting, I walk cautiously to the red haired boy's side.
"Oh, hey there Yamada!!!" He says enthusiastically. Tokoyami, Kaminari, and Koda also greet me. I wave as they go back to their conversation, but Kirishima pulls me back a few steps.
"Hey, so I noticed you use sign language with Uraraka, right?" I nod, wondering where this is going. "That's so cool! You should teach all of us, so you don't have to use that arm band thing all the time. It just takes too long to write, doesn't it?"
My eyebrows furrow as I nod, slightly. He really wants to learn sign language? Just so it's easier for me?
"I don't know how willing the rest of the class would be to learn, but I definitely want to. That's what friends do, right?" He sends me a large pointy-toothed smile.
Friends? He sees us as friends already? I nod with a thin lipped smile.
"Yeah, alright!" He pumps his fist in the air. "You can sit at our table at lunch and teach us then if you want! I don't want to take up your time after school to do this, so I figured lunch would be the best time, right?"
He thought this out so much before I even agreed to it. He's certainly eager. I pull out my marker and write "yeah, sure" on the whiteboard band.
"Cool! Can't wait!"
"Let's go ahead and get these students back to the main campus," the investigator says, coming back over to us. "They've been through a lot. We don't need to question them right away."
Tsu hops up to the man and asks about the condition of our teacher. He calls the hospital on speaker phone and asks for a report from one of the doctors. He speaks of facial fractures, many broken bones, and maybe even loss of eyesight. I deepen my breathing, trying to keep the minimal amount of food in my stomach down. Kirishima places a hand on my shoulder and I send him a grateful glance before turning my attention back to the man. He says the other pros, Thirteen and All Might, should recover well, which eases our minds at least a little bit. Midoriya is also apparently with Recovery Girl and should heal quickly.
We board the bus once more and head back to the school, everyone recounting their fights in the separate areas of the USJ. Kirishima runs off to find Bakugo who had wandered away during the phone call. Soon enough they're on the bus and we begin our drive.
The sun is setting by the time we get back. We enter the school silently, shocked that just a few hours ago, we were leaving for what we thought was rescue training. A few quiet conversations break out, but I walk in the back, just ready to get out of my costume, into some pajamas and into bed.
