Chapter 10: Combat Training - Part 1

The next day, our morning starts out with our basic academic classes. We have math, science, and English. Uncle Mic is teaching English. As he walks into class, I pray he won't say anything to blow my cover. Thankfully, as the class continues, he's only focusing on the curriculum and only calls on the students that raise their hands. Mostly, it's Yaoyorozu, Iida, and Midoriya, so I'm free to take notes without worrying about being called on.

Today, since everyone is actually in their seats, I'm able to see who is sitting around me. Iida sits directly to my right, Tokoyami sits to my left, and a pointy-headed boy I still have yet to talk to sits behind me. So far, he has kept silent and he seems to be quite timid. I decide I won't have to worry about him sitting behind me. But who knows? That opinion could change.

Throughout the lecture, I sneak glances at the boy behind me and to my left. He keeps his eyes trained on the board. I can't tell what he's thinking, but I'm hoping it's not some way to reveal my secret. Anxiety continues to clench my stomach and my hands are sweating onto my paper and soaking it.

Ugh, this is so gross. Why can't I just keep my cool?

Eventually, we make our way to the cafeteria for lunch. I only order white rice and broccoli, writing it on the whiteboard I've become accustomed to bringing everywhere. I take my small tray and sit at one end of an empty table, seeing as the rest of my class is still in line. I pick at my rice with chopsticks, lifting each grain to my mouth individually. I don't know how much food I will be able to keep down, especially with our hero training in the afternoon.

A tray is placed at the seat next to me and I look over to see Ojiro. He offers me a small smile before sitting down. Shoji and Tokoyami take the seats across from us. I notice some other people joining our table. The purple midget sits next to Shoji and immediately starts a conversation, sneaking glances in my direction. His gaze makes me uncomfortable. Two guys, whose names I can't recall, sit as well as the guy who sits behind me. I recognize one as the French boy. He immediately introduces himself as Yuga Aoyama. The others, Koji Koda who can talk to animals and Rikido Sato who gains super strength from eating sugar, are also introduced. The midget introduces himself as Mineta, his eyes taking in my body. I shiver in discomfort. Yeah, him and I are gonna have a problem.

With eight sitting at our table, there is no more room to sit as Uraraka walks by with Midoriya and Iida. Shock crosses her face for a brief moment before I sign a quick "sorry." She nods and points to the table across the aisle from us, saying something to the boys. They both nod in agreement and follow her to the table.

She looks across at me and I quickly sign to her, "I really am sorry. They just all sat down."

"No no, really it's fine. I'm glad you're making friends," she signs back with a smile, though it doesn't really reach her eyes.

I give her my guilty puppy dog eyes and she can't hide her genuine smile. The boys look at her, confused, but she brushes them off, returning her focus to her food as I do the same. I notice Todoroki walks over to their table with a tray and sits at the opposite end. He surely just doesn't want to make small talk. Thank goodness Mic was right.

I take a bite of broccoli. Nobody at our table is particularly talkative except for Aoyama. I take a deep breath, glad I probably won't have to explain myself.

"So what's your quirk, then?" Sato says, directing everyone's attention towards me.

So close!

"I have been wondering about this as well," Tokoyami says, hand placed below his beak in a pensive posture. "We all saw you throw the softball exceptionally far and manage to break the ground beneath your feet with the long jump, though you did not use the same force with your other distance related tests. Let us not forget when that sound came from you during the grip strength test."

"Yeah, or how you crushed that robot's gears when you weren't even near it," Ojiro adds.

My face heats up and I know I won't be able to get out of an explanation for this one, so I take another bite of rice and start writing on my whiteboard.

"My quirk is the ability to make noises that travel wherever I want them to go. I call it illusing." I turn the board so they can all see. Tokoyami opens his mouth to continue questioning, but I hold a finger up and he pauses as I erase the board and keep writing. "Essentially, I am causing vibrations in the air or whatever surface I want to. Certain frequencies and amplitudes provide more power than others and some can easily break stuff."

They all read the board and I erase it, not moving to write anything more down. They're silent for a moment before Shoji speaks up. "If you can create sounds, could you not create a voice for yourself?"

They all turn back to me, expectant. "I could, but it takes up energy I don't want to waste," I write. They nod pensively and go back to their food without asking any more questions.

This group is so understanding, I think to myself. The right corner of my mouth twitches up into a smile, but none of them see it as they're all sitting on my other side.

"Is that why your nose bled?" Ojiro says under his breath next to me. I look up, but nobody else seemed to have heard. "Because you used it too much?"

I nod and eat another grain of rice. For the rest of the meal, I listen to the rest of the group's conversations. They seem to be relatively quiet and reserved. Something I'm thankful for.

After lunch, we return to our classroom for hero training. The number one hero, All Might stands in the doorway, shouting, "I AM.......HERE!"

Everyone's gaze flies over as he enters the classroom, donning his iconic red, blue, white, and yellow costume. "COMING THROUGH THE DOOR LIKE A HERO!!!!" he narrates his own motions as he poses for emphasis.

Everybody gasps as their idol struts to the desk. They analyse his costume, pinpointing which age it was from within seconds.

"Welcome to the most important class at UA High! Think of it as heroing 101! Here, you will learn the basics of being a pro! And what it means to fight to the name of good!"

The students all sit on the edge of their seats. Even Bakugo appears to be sitting up straighter.

"Let's get into it!!! Today's lesson... Will pull no punches!!" He exclaims, showing a card with the word "battle" on it.

"FIGHT TRAINING!" Bakugo says, an elated look in his red eyes.

"Real combat?!?" Midoriya seems appalled.

"But one of the keys of being a hero is... LOOKING GOOD!" our teacher points to the left wall and all of a sudden, panels begin protruding from the wall, revealing what look to be briefcases, all labeled with our class numbers.

"These were designed for you based on your quirk registration forms and the requests you sent in before school started!" The class squeals with delight. That was pretty fast! I didn't think we would get our costumes until later.

"Get yourselves suited up, and then meet me at Training Ground Beta!"

"Yes sir!" The whole class responds as we rush to grab our cases, then head to the locker rooms.

I think back to the time in my room I spent drawing this costume up. It was when I was constantly illusing music and thought of myself as quite the musician. I mostly modeled the outfit after Charlie from Lemonade Mouth (yes, my love for that movie may be a bit unhealthy, but who cares?). I go to an empty section of the locker rooms and open the case to see exactly what I've been waiting for.

I pull on the black bodysuit, it's tight, but very flexible and it allows me to breathe. The sleeves go all the way to my wrists with a hole to put my thumb through. On the left sleeve, there is a small whiteboard curving around my wrist with a marker attached, so I can easily communicate.

Royal blue fabric wraps around the torso of the suit as a corset with silver buttons. The neckline of the corset attaches to a black choker with a bow tie and white ruffles. I put this on, making sure it will cover my scar before unclasping my everyday choker.

I grin at the shoes. They must've had to get pretty creative with these.

As a dancer, I feel I need full control of my feet, so I requested the shoes be flexible enough for my feet to move freely, but sturdy enough to protect them. I slip them on, already in awe of how well they move. Tapping on them from the outside, they hold strong. Perfect. From the outside, they appear to be some sort of combat boots, but they move as smoothly as ballet slippers.

I put my curly hair up into a half ponytail, pushing it up and through itself like I did before on the night of the celebratory dinner, then put on my blue and silver mask.

Finally, I think, picking up my final accessory. A black coat with tails. Just like Charlie's. Putting it on, I find the fabric as flexible as the rest of the costume, not restricting my arm movements, yet adding that extra flare.

I look in the mirror and have to stop myself from doing a happy dance. It looks so cool!!!! I think to myself, admiring my orchestra conductor's costume. The whole outfit shimmers with silver thread accents and embroidery. I can't help but smile. I take off the necklace with Mom's ring, placing it carefully in the suitcase. I don't know what type of training we're gonna have to do, but I don't want anything happening to it.

"OHMIGOSH, YOU LOOK SO CUTE!!!!" Ochaco squeals as she peaks around the corner. I take in her outfit, a black bodysuit as well with pink stripes and pink boots.

"So do you," I sign, still smiling.

"Thanks, I just wish it weren't so tight," she says, pulling at the pants, awkwardly.

"Yeah, but at least it's flexible."

"I guess. We should probably get out there."

I nod and we exit the locker room with the rest of the girls, everyone fawning over each other's outfits. We meet up with the boys and head over to the training ground.

Walking through the door, All Might is already there, awaiting our entrance.

"They say the clothes make the pros, young ladies and gentlemen and behold, you are the proof!"

We exit the tunnel and light glints off people's new gadgets. Bakugo's gauntlets, shaped like grenades, and Tsu's goggles reflect back at me from the front of the group. I choose to stay in the back while everyone else makes their big entrance.

"Take this to heart! From now on, you are all... Heroes in training!" He exclaims as the last of us step into the light. He regards us with a smile. "This is getting me all revved up! You look so cool! Now, shall we get started, you bunch of newbies?"

I hear footsteps behind me and turn around to see... Midoriya? I guess he missed the group's entrance. His teal tracksuit and hood make him resemble a bunny rabbit. I'm sure that's not what he was going for, but it definitely captures his personality.

"Hey Deku!" Ochaco turns around and notices him. They start talking about their costumes and I tune them out, just paying attention to what All Might is saying about the training.

"Now that you're ready, it's time for combat training!"

"Sir," Iida pipes up in his white and navy blue suit. "This is the fake city from our entrance exam. Does that mean that we'll be conducting urban battles again?"

"Not quite!" All Might holds up two fingers to the class. "I'm going to move you two steps ahead. Most of the villain fights you see on the news take place outside. However, statistically speaking, run-ins with the most dastardly evildoers take place indoors. Think about it! Backroom deals. Home invasions. Secret underground lairs. Truly intelligent criminals stay hidden in the shadows. For this training exercise, you'll be split into teams of two of good guys and bad guys and fight indoor battles!"

"Isn't this a little advanced?" Tsu questions from the side.

"The best training is that you get on the battlefield! But remember, you can't just punch a robot this time. You're dealing with actual people now."

"Sir, will you be the one deciding who wins?" Yaoyorozu asks.

"How much can we hurt the other team?" Bakugo asks gruffly.

"Do we need to worry about the losers getting expelled, like earlier?" Squeaks Ochaco.

"Will you be splitting us up based on chance or comparative skill?" Iida raises his hand.

Aoyama pulls his glittery purple cape forward for everyone to see, "Isn't this cape très chic?"

"I wasn't finished talking!" All Might sounds like he's being strangled by all the questions. He pulls out a booklet of notes and begins reading. "Listen up!"

"The situation is this: the villains have hidden a nuclear missile somewhere in their hideout. The heroes must try to foil their plans. To do that, the good guys either have to catch the evildoers or recover the weapon. Likewise, the bad guys succeed if they protect their payload or capture the heroes. Time is limited and we will choose teams by drawing lots!" He holds up a box and begins pulling names out, telling us the teams. I get placed on team I with Ojiro.

"I declare that the first teams to fight will be... These guys!!" He holds up two balls, the black one being team D and the white one being team A, meaning Midoriya and Ochaco will be the heroes while Iida and Bakugo are the villains.

Oh I can't wait to see how this turns out.

We walk into a room lined with screens so we can watch as the teams complete their battles.

After 5 minutes of Iida and Bakugo prepping, Midoriya and Ochaco head in. They take corners very carefully, expecting a sneak attack at any moment, soon enough, that happens, Bakugo flying around a corner and blasting at them. The explosive blonde throws a big right hook at the smaller boy, but he seems to have predicted it and grabs his arm, flipping him over his shoulder and slamming him into the ground. Bakugo writhes in pain for a second before standing up and shaking himself off. They appear to be talking, but there is no sound on the videos, so we all sit there, watching with bated breath. Him and Midoriya fight while Ochaco goes further into the building to look for Iida and the weapon. As much as I want to check on my friend, my eyes are drawn to the screens with Midoriya and Bakugo's fight.

The whole class commentates the battle, yelling things to and at the opponents, despite the fact they can't hear them.

They exchange blows, mostly Bakugo, until he pulls the pin on his grenade gauntlet, sending a massive blast towards the boy who barely dodges in time.

Recovering, Midoriya stands up to block the next head on attack, but it never comes. Bakugo blasts one hand down, redirecting his force to flip over the green haired boy, setting off another explosion behind him to steady himself, then another to hit Midoriya square in the back.

"What was that move?" The spiky red haired boy says, astounded as the rest of the class gasps.

"He doesn't come off as a guy with a strategy, but he's actually quite intelligent," the level voice of Todoroki speaks from behind me. Red boy, Ashido, and I turn to regard him, shocked at his sudden speech. I notice his left half is covered completely by ice, all except a few strands of crimson hair peeking out.

"What're you talkin' about?" Red boy asks. I take a moment to examine his costume as well. He wears just black pants with some torn red fabric hanging from the belt around the back, almost appearing as a skirt. He also wears a large red R belt buckle and a black mask of sorts. It acts as a chin and nose guard, but doesn't appear to protect any of the rest of his face. I notice a small scar on his right eyelid. A rough, black sash lays across his muscled, bare chest. Isn't that a little much? I think to myself. At least Bakugo has the decency to wear a tank top.

Todoroki continues speaking in his quiet, level voice. "He changed his trajectory while in midair using a blast that doubled as a smokescreen. Very clever..."

"A feint attack like that requires an extreme amount of precision. He had to calculate the physics and demonstrate control over his quirk," Yaoyorozu adds.

"Bakugo is uber talented," lightning bolt boy says in a defeated voice. "I hate it."

The two boys on screen continue fighting. Bakugo throws Midoriya around, trying to beat his will out of him. The boy stands, taking a moment to breathe before running away from his classmate. He stands at the far wall and faces Bakugo.

They scream a few things at each other before both charging up their moves and running at each other.

"They're gonna kill each other!!" Red boy shouts, rushing up to where All Might stands. "Sir!" He tries to get his attention, but it's no use.

By the time he yells into his microphone, "both of you, stop now!!" they have already committed to their attacks.

An explosion clouds the two with dust, quickly blown away in a torrent of wind. Glass breaks all around the building, a large hole blasting through the center, straight into the room Iida and Ochaco are in.

I haven't even been paying attention to their side of the fight!

She nullifies the gravity of a pillar and picks it up, using it as a baseball bat to hit the rubble straight at Iida, distracting him long enough for her to float over his head and capture the weapon.

The class is silent, watching as the dust clears on Midoriya and Bakugo. The image makes me turn away, too reminiscent of a day I tried to forget. The hothead's right hand faces Midoriya's arm, leaving a large burn mark on his skin while the green haired boy's broken fist points to the ceiling. Though I try to get the image out of my head, I keep hearing the sound of Kati's bones breaking and the wrenching metal of my parent's car. I instead focus my thoughts on what happened in the fight and force my eyes back to the screen.

He didn't attack Bakugo at all! He just thought he did.

Midoriya's eyes close as he collapses to the ground. Bakugo stands there, staring at his classmate's unconscious form with shock and fear in his eyes. For once, there is no anger in his face as he stares at Midoriya. I notice movement from another screen as Ochaco falls from the weapon, landing on her hands and knees. She violently throws up her lunch. Iida jumps into action, kneeling down next to her, talking and rubbing her back.

I guess that attack took too much of her energy.

"The hero team... WINS!!!!!" our teacher booms into the microphone, but everyone remains silent out of shock. He walks out of the room and instructs us to stay put while he checks on the students' conditions.

"Oh my gosh are you alright?!" Ashido's high voice snaps my attention away from the screens. "You don't look so good!"

I glance around and see everyone looking at me. My head swirls as crunching bone still echoes through it. My vision becomes darker and I take a few deep breaths, trying to return oxygen to my lungs as I nod.

"Are you sure?" Ojiro walks up from behind me, placing a hand on my shoulder. "Do you need some water or something?"

I just put my hand up to tell them to stop and I back away to the back of the room, leaning against the wall. After a few more concerned glances at me, my classmates' gazes return to the monitors.

This school is intense. Am I sure I'm cut out for this?

We watch as, with All Might's supervision, a robot gurney lifts Midoriya and carries him out of the building. Bakugo remains in place, staring at his hand he used to burn the boy's left arm. He trembles as he clenches his fist and breathes heavily. All Might places a hand on the boy's shoulder, bending down to speak to him.

After going over the results, the next battle starts, team B, Shoji and Todoroki as the heroes, and team I, Ojiro and I as the villains.

Our team stands by our weapon, Ojiro stretching and preparing himself to fight.

I wave at him to get his attention and then begin writing on my whiteboard band. We only have 5 minutes, so we have to strategize quickly.

"Shoji has a quirk that helps with reconnaissance. He will probably be able to hear our heartbeats or footsteps and be able to know exactly where we are." I hold my arm out for him to read.

"So what should we do about that? Stay here and wait for a fight?" Ojiro asks. He then adds worriedly, "they're both pretty strong opponents who I'm sure will put up a good fight."

I nod and begin writing down my strategy, "If I go to the center of the building, I can make random points of sound on all the floors. They would be loud and would keep him from hearing us if we tread quietly. That would buy us time before they could find the weapon."

"What would happen if they attacked you, though?" Ojiro asked when he finished reading.

"It would be worse for them if I saw them. If I know where they are, I can immobilize them with the vibrations."

"I'll stay here to protect the weapon just in case they get past you," Ojiro states, confidently, standing in front of said weapon.

"I'll make a map of where I'll be putting the sounds just in case you need to move around the building. Don't walk through the points or you'll get blasted back," I write and show my teammate.

We quickly produce the map and I draw dots and memorize them. They seem to be scattered randomly throughout the building, so the other team shouldn't be able to find the pattern. With the stone walls, the sound will echo like crazy.

"I'll put a sound right outside the door," I write. "It should make it much harder to get into the room. Just be careful."

Ojiro nods, "I will. We got this. We only have about 30 seconds before we start, so you should get into place!!"

My heart leaps in my chest and I jump up, running to the third floor hallway. In position, I wait for the word from All Might.

"Look alive kids! Show us the embodiment of good! Or evil! Let's go!!!!" He shouts through the microphone and a tone sounds, indicating the time has started.

I focus on all the agreed points and begin causing a ruckus. From each point, I illuse a cacophony of instruments and percussion. It's a trick I practiced with Mic. I memorized a bunch of Metallica songs from Grandma's playlist, so I could create specific points of each instrument and voice. I focus heavily on the drums and the bass as Enter Sandman blares through the hallways. This will take a lot of energy, but I'm ready. I just hope this works.

After only a few seconds, ice covers the walls and floors, climbing my legs and holding me in place. This must be Todoroki. With his left side covered in ice, no wonder he can control this as well as fire.

Oh no! The fire!

I should've told my teammate about the fire. Ojiro is up there all by himself and no matter how strong he is, he can't use physical combat against fire. I mentally facepalm at my stupidity. I was so focused on my strategy to distract them that I didn't even think about my team. Stupid. Stupid. Stupid!!

I wait a few more minutes, hugging my jacket around me and shivering as I pray the sound is working. They would have to have found the weapon by now if it wasn't doing it's job.

On either side of the hallway is a point of sound. I keep my eyes flicking back and forth between the two. All the illused sound is at the same height. Just at Todoroki's chin and squarely at Shoji's collarbone. To my left, I hear a grunt and a scuffle as somebody hits one of the vibrations and falls over. I look over to see Shoji standing up, shakily. He clutches his chest and is about to crouch below the noise to run at me, but I illuse violins into his stomach. They trail up and down like they did for Uraraka. He slips again and falls on the ice, squirming with discomfort.

But where's Todoroki? They must have split up.

I lift one hand to my earpiece and illuse my mother's voice into it.

"This is Yamada. I have Shoji immobilized, but Todoroki isn't with him. They split up to look for the weapon."

"Yamada? Is that you?"

Yes of course it's me. I just fricken said...

"Yes, just be careful!"

"Are your feet st-t-tuck to the ground as well?" He asks as his jaw chatters from the cold.

"Yes, but don't worry about that! Just hold your ground!" I illuse into the microphone.

"Wait! Todoroki is here!" Ojiro's panicked voice says before the line goes quiet.

A few moments later, All Might's voice is heard just barely over the music, "the hero team... WINS!!!!"

The ice melts at my feet and I rush over to Shoji, stopping the music. I feel as though I've gone deaf without the loud sound echoing through my brain. The whole building is heating up and turning into a sauna from the water vapor of the melted ice. I put out a hand to help up my classmate as he clutches his stomach, trying to stand.

"Sorry about that," I write on my arm band once he's standing.

"Don't worry about it," he says from under his face mask. The sound is welcome after the deafening silence. "Good job," he bows to me. I return the gesture and we walk outside and back to the monitor room.

------Author's Note------

Above is what I had in mind for Koto's hero costume(obviously with the black bodysuit underneath it all)! The hairstyle is the closest I could find, but she doesn't have bangs and her hair is curlier. Overall, though, this look is exactly what I have in mind for her!
