Chapter 21
To the order's surprise, it wasn't Greene or Anora who was against it, even though both looked murderous, it was Severus who stood up, shouting at Dumbledore. Astrid's head was down, looking to the ground, her eyes clouded with fear. "You can't expect a girl of her age to do this." Severus looked desperate and angry. The most emotion Juliane had ever seen on his face.
"Severus you have to understand-" Dumbledore started.
"Understand what Albus? That you are putting my godchild in danger?" Severus roared.
"I'll do it." Astrid's voice was barely a whisper. Greene turned to her in shock.
"Astrid-" He started.
"N-No. If I can help. I will." She said, more firmly this time.
"Please Astrid, don't do this. I couldn't bear it if he killed you." Anora said, tears filling her eyes.
"He won't. I'll have uncle Sev. Right?" She turned to Severus with a hopeful look.
"I'll watch over her. I promise." He said.
"Make an unbreakable vow." Greene said. Severus didn't hesitate before nodding. Juliane gasped. It was a very rare thing for her to see the professor show any emotion, even though it was pretty clear that he cared for Astrid in a way that her old family hadn't.
Greene and Severus had been extremely close in school, and when Astrid had been adopted by Greene and Anora, they had made Severus her godfather, and he was her uncle. They had always been close and Severus didn't want his niece to be harmed in anyway. He knew that he would watch out for her no matter what. "Dumbledore will you be the bonder?" Greene asked.
"Of course." Dumbledore said, moving to the two. The group watched as Greene and Severus gripped each other's forearms, and kneeled on the ground. Juliane was frightened but also intrigued to see the events that were taking place.
"Do you Severus Snape promise to protect Astrid Jones, as she becomes a spy for the order, and joins the death eaters?"
"I do." Severus said flatly. Astrid looked at the two with tears in her eyes. She looked conflicted, like she wanted to run to her parent and uncle, or she wanted to run away. Get out of the house and put nobody in danger.
"And if Astrid should be put in danger. Do you promise to help her in any way that you can?"
"I do." The bond faded. Severus and Greene stood up shakily, and walked back to their seats. Astrid still stood by the door. Looking as if she wanted to run. In a way, Juliane could understand the pain that Astrid was feeling. All her life, she was worried about her father. That he was going to come and finish what he started. Even though he wasn't drunk, the man still had a hatred that nobody could explain. He was still angry at Juliane for just looking like her mother. Juliane was frightened that he would come and kill her, or get to her family. She couldn't bear it if any of them were harmed because of her father.
"Astrid, why don't you come for a walk with me?" Juliane said, motioning towards the door. Knowing that all Astrid wanted to do was leave at that moment. Now her life and Severus' was on the line, and it was a horrible thing for a girl to go through at such a young age. Astrid nodded quickly, grateful for the escape. "Carry on with the meeting, Bill can catch me up later." She said to the group, before the two opened the door to the kitchen and walked out.
The cool, night air hit the girls' faces as they walked down the street in silence. It wasn't awkward, it was just there. "I know what it's like." Juliane said finally.
"What do you mean?" Astrid asked, clearly taken aback. Nobody knew what her life was like. Not even Greene and Anora. They were her parents but she couldn't talk about her life before then without breaking down.
"I mean up until last year, I couldn't talk."
"I'm confused."
"My father used to beat me. After my mother died. He thought I looked to much like her, and would come home drunk and... Well... There was one night where he came home w-with a silver dagger." Juliane allowed a single tear to slip down her cheek, but wiped it away quickly. It was always painful for her to tell the story, but she told it anyways. It was for Astrid. "I remember the dagger exactly. Every detail. It had a jagged silver blade, and a handle with designs of something or other. I couldn't get a good look. But it was engraved with his initials, and he used it on me. That's why I have all these scars. He ended up cutting my voice box. It's a miracle I'm alive. They couldn't fix it fully, and I lived for about seventeen years without my voice. I know what it's like to get beaten by your father. If you need to talk, I'm here." Astrid stayed silent, listening to the story. The two sat on some rusty swings that creaked every time they moved.
"I was six years old." Astrid started. "My mother had been in a muggle car crash only a year after I was born. My father raised me. He had been kicked out of his family for falling in love with a muggle. He stopped using magic all together. He never told me about it, and I was raised to believe that magic was fake. Only in the stories. When I started performing accidental magic, he started whipping me. Every time I used it, I would get beaten. 'It's the work of the devil.' he would say. Little did I know, he was a wizard. He put that... Thing.. inside me. Made me a monster. I killed an entire village! I moved in with Greene and Anora. They are my parents. I hate that man to this day for making me a monster." Astrid said 'that man' with such hatred, it made Juliane slightly frightened.
"You aren't a monster Astrid. When I look at you, I see a young girl who had a few scars, but still stays strong. She holds her head up high, and won't back down from a challenge. I don't know you as much as Greene and Anora do, but from what I saw in there, you will do anything to protect your family, even if it means putting your life in danger. I respect you for that. Don't think of your problem, as a monster. Think of it as what makes you... You." Juliane said, allowing the swing to go back and forth softly.
"Do you think that? How do you not see me as dangerous? As a threat?" Astrid asked.
"Because you aren't. Now. let's got back. The meeting's bound to be over by now." Juliane said, standing up and walking to the street.
"Thank you Juliane." Astrid said, walking over to her.
"For what?"
"For helping me see what I truly am."
The two got back to the house, making small talk. Juliane looked to the place between thirteen and eleven, and the house started to appear. Except there was something that seemed to be off. On the doorstep, there was a small bundle. Walking forwards slowly, and taking out her wand, Juliane took one step forwards. Then another. "Stay back Astrid." She warned the girl, who looked like she wanted to help.
"But-"
"If something happens, I give you full permission to use any use of magic. I must also tell you. If something happens to me. If I get hurt, you need to run." Juliane cut her off. Astrid slowly nodded, as Juliane approached the bundle. She pointed her wand at it, and moved the top aside. Letting out a loud gasp, Juliane's wand fell to the ground with a clatter.
"What is it? What's wrong?" A hundred questions tumbled out of Astrid's mouth, as she looked around in a panic. Half ready to run, half ready to turn into an obscurus.
"N-nothing... It's a baby."
