Chapter 17: A Painful Sacrifice

Max had once invited me to the back of his house for a little chat. He held a long axe in his right hand and halved every log that was placed on the tree stump. I helped him distribute the logs while he chopped them with one strike each.
" What is it that you want to talk about sir?", I asked when I handed him a log.
He positioned the log on the stump, raised his axe and brought it down." Do you believe in God, Joe?", he asked.
I hesitated before answering," I don't think I have an answer".
" Then that makes you lukewarm", he replied and took a log from the pile by himself.
" Why do you ask?", I asked curiously.
" My parents are atheists. Mom lost her parents from cancer, and dad lost a very close friend of his. Me, however, give thanks to Him".
     " Why praise Him?".
" I'll tell you the truth. The soldier who goes to war but doesn't believes in Christ is not fit to be a soldier at all. Because if you were, you would realise that God truly protects those who loves him".
" It still doesn't answer my question though".
He sighed and replied," I've seen death right in the eye countless of times, and everytime I've asked myself,' How the hell did I survive?'. As a soldier you aren't giving up your life just to protect your country, you're giving up your life to protect the country that God himself took his precious time to create".
     " But I'm no soldier".
He shook his head and said," Don't you realise what I'm trying to say here? As long as you always help people, even if it almost cost you your life, there will always be someone God will send to help you in your time of distress".
Looking back at some of Max' words usually made me wonder whether Max knew that all these things would happen eventually. I thought I was going to die in Wallace' mouth, but bullets rained down upon his left eye, blinding his vision and making him to crash with a great fail. I opened my eyes and saw that he was down. Without wasting much time, I climbed back in and heavied a sigh of relief.
" This is Lukeman. Do you copy?", Lukeman's voice echoed from my walkie-talkie.
I grabbed it and answered," Where the hell have you been?".
" Sorry. Went out to get some supplies. Saw the wreckage and knew something was wrong. Carried the helicopter and made good use of it"
The sound of the helicopter boomed outside te building. I saw him sitting in it and giving me a thumbs-up.
" Get us out of here", I ordered.
" You'll have to find your way out for now. This thing's not dead yet".
I looked down and saw that Wallace was slowly rising to his feet, looking very pissed off.
     " Be careful. That's Wallace".
" What?", asked the surprised Lukeman.
A fireball launched into the air and went straight for Lukeman. The latter dodged it and flew out of the danger zone. Wallace launched himself into the air and went after Lukeman without hesitation, forgetting about us for the moment.
" You wanna fly Wallace? I'll give you a flight then!", exclaimed Lukeman as he flew inbetween buildings. Wallace followed, transforming into various flying creatures and apes, all for the chance of killing the bird.
Lukeman flew over a gas station, gunned the trucks and set the place on fire. The smoke blinded Wallace' vision and made him crash again. Lukeman emerged and fired a grenade which blinded the injured eye completely. Yet Wallace anger knew no bounds. He rushed back into the air and engaged Lukeman in a fit of rage. He flew high above him, turned into the hybrid of the armadillo and porcupine and rained his darts upon him. Lukeman managed to dodge most of them, but some took out the guns, leaving him with only the grenade launchers.
" Damnit!", he exclaimed as he managed to gain control of the bird. He moved out of the way in a nick of time before a large eagle could crush him with it's claws. He had no choice but to run and try to think of a way to fight back, but his opponent pursued him so furiously that he was forced to retreat upwards to the sky.
" Lukeman, where are you? Do you copy?", I asked when Blue and I managed to escape from the building through a long rope of ropes and clothes. Blue had hanged on to me tightly when we climbed down. He sat on the floor beside me, holding on to me closely.
" I copy", Lukeman replied with a confident voice.
" Where are you?", I asked again.
He paused for a moment, then said," Travelling to Heaven Joe".
I paused as I heard those words, then panicked and asked," What's happening Lukeman? Don't you dare die on me soldier".
" I tried my best Joe. But there is only one more thing I can do to ensure your safety, and I'm afraid that I won't be with you any longer".
I looked up and saw them going upwards." Don't do it Lukeman. Don't you dare die! Don't waste your life for mine!", I exclaimed while sobbing.
" I won't waste it Joe. Because I know that someday, you'll find the rotten bastard that is causing us all this trouble. And when you do, you'll make sure that our deaths will not be in vain".
" Please Lukeman. Don't do it. I can't afford to lose another friend".
" I wish there was another way. But it seems that my time has come".
Without thinking twice, Lukeman pulled the bird backwards and drove straight into the awaiting mouth of the eagle which had now transformed into a croc-rhino hybrid with an extended jaw so as to seal the deal. However, as the bird was crushed inbetween the jaws, an explosion erupted and blew off the left side of Wallace' brain, killing the formidable opponent once and for all. But none of this mattered to me at all. What mattered was the fact that I lost two comrades.
