Chapter 13: The Zeal to Live

The missile hit the floor where we were and ignited, causing an explosion that was deafening and devastating. While the impact threw us into the air, in slow motion, I saw the petri-dish that held my blood sample. Memories immediately took me back to an ambush made by a group of terrorists who were hunted down by our military operatives. I had hid behind some stacks of crates for cover and watched as men sprayed bullets against each other. I looked to my left and saw General Max battling against six men with a Jack knife. While he managed to slice open the throats of five men, I quickly picked up a big stick close by and hit the last man who had pulled out a gun to kill him. General Max looked at me for a while, staring at me with his bloodstained face and dirty military clothes. He then matched marched towards me, grabbed me and demanded," What's your name boy?".
" J-Joe Benson!", I stammered in fright as I was always afraid of him.
" Who are you stammering for huh? I just wanna thank you for saving me back then and you look like someone who will piss on his pants soon".
" Oh right. Sor..." , I replied but was cut short when he pushed me to the ground while yelling," Get down!".
One of the terrorists had a Bazooka at hand. He sighted us and immediately opened fire. Fortunately, the blast only separated us and sent me flying into the air. The sky spinned round me until I landed hard on the floor. I groaned and spat out blood, then adjusted myself and laid on the floor, waiting for death to accept me. However, General Max found me seconds later and gave me a helping hand.
" Stand up Joe!", he ordered," Not even a missile can kill you until you've fulfilled what needs to be fulfilled!".
" What?", I asked as I saw a blur image of him.
He sighed and decided to carry me on his shoulders. Since I wasn't that heavy, he was still able to use his gun and clear out a path for us to escape.
" Remember Joe", he voiced out to me," Not even a missile can kill you until you've fulfilled what needs to be fulfilled".
Max was right. No matter what deadly traps our stalker has, I cannot die until I've find the solution to all of this. And so, for that reason, I stretched forth my hand and grabbed the dish before hitting the floor.
The place was a burning mess. Everyone somehow managed to survive with minimal injuries. However, common sense told us to get out from the building as soon as possible. Lukeman lead the way while his two soldiers followed from behind. Wallace, Blue and I were in the middle, and thanks be to God, we escaped from the building before a second missile brought it down to its foundations.
" Quickly!", ordered Lukeman," Let's find a place to take cover!".
We followed Lukeman and immediately climbed over the gates. However, one of the men delayed while climbing and fell on his back on the other side. He stood up immediately and bolted after us while shouting at the top of his voice to wait for him. His cries never reached us as the jet came into view again and this time fired multiple bullets at us. Luckily, we took cover behind a few cars and escaped the menacing waves of death. Unfortunately, the soldier who lagged behind was killed mercilessly as the bullets met him. His dead body instantly reminded me of the gunned body in my dream, and I was horrified when there was undoubtedly a striking resemblance between the two.
Lukeman stood up and opened fire against the jet; so did his comrade. But their bullets never hit as the jet swooshed in between building and escaped unharmed while making a U-turn.
" What do we do now?", asked Blue as he searched for the devilish jet.
" I don't know. This is my first time as well", replied Lukeman with a frown.
" Who the hell is controlling that thing?!", exclaimed Wallace.
" A Militan zombie. They are the only ones capable of using weapons", I replied.
" Then we're done for!", wailed Wallace.
" No we're not!", I yelled angrily as I stood and recharged my gun. I looked at the others and ordered," You guys should get out of here as fast as possible. I'll draw it out for as long as I can".
" What? You can't Joe!", objected Blue.
" You're indeed more crazy than ever!", commented Wallace.
" Do you really want to die so bad?", asked Lukeman with another frown.
" Listen to me. Forget about me and save yourselves. This is the only way for now. Don't worry about me, because I have what it takes to take this jet down".
" And what's that?", Lukeman asked curiously.
" The honourable teachings of a former great general", I replied and stepped out from my hiding place," Now go!".
They all shook their heads in pity and obeyed. Before leaving, Blue threw a necklace towards me. It had a cross with a man nailed on it. I smiled and looked at Blue, who smiled back and said," I believe he will protect you Joe. Thank you for always being strong".
He then waved and ran after the others to catch up. I sighed and looked up to see the jet heading towards my direction. I immediately opened fire at it, hoping to draw it's attention. To my utmost surprise, it took a sharp turn to it's right and went after the others.. I gasped when I realized what it was trying to do, and I immediately remembered what the voice said to me back at the Diamond cutting factory:
" Goodluck trying to save your friends Joe".
Oh my God, I thought, In that case, whoever is behind this is not trying to kill me, but is rather trying to kill my friends.
So the dream I had wasn't a dream. It was a possible future that was bound to happen if I don't do anything to stop it. The gunned solider was the first to be killed, and since there is no particular pattern, I have no other choice than to help them, since they were the only ones currently giving me hope.
I looked round me and saw a dusty blue bike on the far end. I made it stand and praised the Lord in my heart when I saw that the keys to the bike were already in place. I hopped in and immediately hit the road.
Meanwhile, the jet gave them a heavy pursuit as it rained bullets and two missiles at the others. The first missile hit the other soldier and crippled him on both legs while the next one put him out of his misery. The jet let them be so as to regain altitude, while the rest hid behind a military van which had a large machine gun stand on it. Lukeman puffed out blood as he held a fatal wound on his right side. Had he not been injured, he would have repaired the gun and vanquished the jet once and for all. With the two having no experience of the weapon, they were already a sorry lot about to get killed by an unknown enemy.
" I... have to... kill that thi... ng", muttered Lukeman as he was slowly losing blood.
" Stop talking!", order Wallace as he tore his shirt into two and stopped the bleeding by using one of the pieces as a folded material while tiring it to the wound with the other," The more you talk or move, the more you are most likely to die".
     " What's t...he use? We're dead already".
" No we aren't", said Blue," God will get us out of this situation. Even if we die, let it not be recorded that we died without a fight".
" Here it comes!", yelled Wallace as he looked over and saw the jet heading straight towards the truck. Blue had stood and brought out Lukeman's weapon to shoot, and it was at that moment that I suddenly whooshed pass him as I had found out that the bike had some nitro packs attached to it. I had activated the nitro after seeing the horrible burnt pieces of the soldier's body, which of course had made me furious and fed up with this bullshit. I had jumped off the bike after making sure if flew into the air through a make shift ramp of a large truck. It was at that moment that the jet fired two of its last missiles which fortunately hit the bike and caused an explosion, forcing the jet to quickly propel itself upwards to escape the blast.
I stood on my feet and saw the machine gun stand. A bright idea immediately hit me in the head and I spontaneously set out to put it into effect. I jumped onto the back of the truck and began repairing the gun. Blue and Wallace stood and watched me repairing the gun.
" What's your plan Joe?", asked Blue.
" To send that bastard of a zombie back to hell", I replied.
" Here it comes!", announced Wallace as he sighed the jet coming in hot from North.
" Both of you, get down! This madness ends today!", I ordered.
They both obeyed willingly and I heard Blue encouraging me, saying," Show them that we have someone greater than their master!".
I smiled as his words and looked up to see the jet reaching ground level and heading straight towards us. I possessed no fear in me as I remembered when Max had to drop me down at that same battlefield and quickly repair a machine gun stand as well. I had took his own gun and killed off the terrorists who tried to stop us(although I was a poor shooter at that time and by so doing wasted lots of bullets on less than a dozen of them). When it was ready, he smirked and yelled at me," Like my mama once told me Joe, if it flies, it dies!".
He'd gunned down multiple jets and men as though he was playing a video game. It was then that I had admired him so much that I wanted him to be my mentor. It was at that day that I personally met him  and I believed that all those teachings he gave me back then were the ones that enabled me to survive.
And so, like Max once said, if it flies, it dies. Both parties opened fire against each other. Unfortunately for the jet, it's armour finished halfway, giving me the opportunity to dismantle it with the showering of my bullets. It crashed, broke into pieces and laid metres away from us. While Blue and Wallace stood and watched in disbelief, I grabbed Lukeman's gun from Blue and approached the destroyed jet. I found the head of the jet and broke the glass to see who was inside, and to my greatest shock, it was Erik.
The latter was heavily wounded and had no hopes of recovery. Contaminated blood oozed out from his body, most especially from his mouth. He stared at me for a while as though he was dead, then raised his right hand weakly towards me to give me something. I took a torn page of a King James Bible from him and saw his bloodstain on a particular verse, 2 Timothy 4:7.
     " I- I don't understand", I said with a confused look.
" That.... Is your mission statement. Your enemy will... Not rest until... your friends are all gone...", stated Erik.
" What do you mean Erik?".
" Idiot... Everyone of them is... as good as dead. None... will survive".
" No. No, no, no, no. No, no, no! Whose behind all this Erik? Tell me!".
" His name... is Lu... Lu...", he tried to speak but couldn't say anything more.
" Erik! Don't die! I need to know!", I yelled and tugged on his shirt for answers. But atlas, he was no more, and there was nothing I could do about it.
I brought out my head and looked back to see the others moving weakly towards me, with Lukeman being supported by both Wallace and Blue. I sighed and looked back at Erik. I closed his eyes with my right fingers and swore," I promise you Erik. As long as I live, I'll make sure that I find the cure".
" Joe", announced Blue as he noticed something unusual about me," Joe you're bleeding".
I looked at my body and saw that I had been hit by the firing. I looked at the others and saw Blue leaving the company of Lukeman and Wallace and rushing towards me. Voices became inaudible and my vision faded away as I passed out and collapsed on the floor.
