Chapter 15: Who let the dogs out?

We secured the building and settled down for the night. Musa called everyone to him and equally divided all the reloads to everyone, one man to four reloads. However, he cheated me and gave me two reloads, while he settled with six reloads and grunted like a pig. No one, not even me, challenged this ill-treatment I received from this self-deluded Nigerian. Blue however gave one of his reloads to me. While everyone else had AK-47s, we squatted with a revolver each. We didn't argue nor complain. We had each others back, and that was what mattered now.
They lighted a fire and sat round it, laughing and making up jokes. I sat away from them, looking at them, wondering whether they even knew what lied ahead of them.
" What's wrong?", said Tom who joined me.
" Nothing", I replied," Aren't you suppose to be amongst them?".
" In a time like this? No can do".
" I see. What about food?".
" Musa plans to find some food tomorrow".
" I can see that. Where are we anyway?".
     " Mexico, Mexico City".
     " The country's capital?".
" Yes. But I do want to know what are your ideas on how to stop this plague".
     " We'll need a lab and a test subject".
     " Just like that?".
     " Pretty much like that".
" Then praise the Lord. I'll be off now. Want to see the boss quick".
     " Ok. See you tomorrow".
Tom smiled and took his leave. I sat there thinking about what dad had said. Where were the chemicals he talked about? As far I know, they were suppose to make me immune to the virus. If I could get to a lab as fast as possible, I could take a sample of my blood and deduce the chemicals inside of me. If I could duplicate more of this in large quantities, there would be enough to save many lives and end this plague. I decided that only Blue would know of this by tomorrow, since he was the only one I trusted completely. I didn't trusted Tom one hundred percent, although he was actually nice to me. Wasn't sure about Erik though, he was too close to that Musa of a brute, and although we were friends, I had to watch my back, because I wasn't going to be a fool to anyone, most especially Musa.
The laughs and jokes were dying down. The men seemed to feel tired and also aware that they were in a dangerous place, away from human civilization. At the far right side away from the group sat Blue, concentrated on his Bible, although his eyes were begging for sleep. I studied him and concluded that nature would probably make him sleep 15 minutes later. I wondered why he carried the Bible even after the battle in the skies. He loved it so much that I felt he would collapse if it was taken away from him. To me, it is a book that contained many secrets and myths of a strange God that is so powerful that nothing could harm him because he himself made nothing. I may not be a Christian but at least I was an excellent observer. Feeling tried, I rest my back on the floor and drifted off for a good night sleep.

The first ray of sunlight woke me up from my nap. The others also woke up from their sleep, with some making loud yawns as if they were lazy bones, disturbing others who were trying to have more sleep. Then came the tyrant's voice, drawing everyone's attention to him. Musa came in with a dead deer, which surprised most of us. The brute had woken up before us, dared to come out in the open, and successfully killed an animal and brought it back to us. He and some men roasted the meat and shared it among everyone, and just like yesterday, I received little compared to everyone else.
As we sat there having breakfast, we heard a dog's howl. Some men rest their arms on their weapons while others looked at the direction from which the howl came. A dog came out from nowhere and moved towards us. It stopped and sat on the floor, looking at us with it's puppy eyes. Tom was moved and thus went over to the dog.
" I wouldn't do that Tom", adviced Musa.
" Relax, Its just a dog", replied Tom.
Tom petted the dog who continued to look at him. His first mistake was going down on one knee. Immediately, the dog became savage and sprang for his neck. It failed to break his throat, but succeeded in tasting his blood. He grabbed it and wrestled with it, but it kept ripping off his skin. Musa got his gun ready and shot the dog right in the skull. It dropped dead beside him, while Tom struggled for his life. He looked at Musa who pointed the gun at him.
" I told you Tom", said Musa as he pulled the trigger.
Tom laid lifeless after the gunshot, a bullethole in his head. I became angry and moved to attack Musa. Erik stopped me from making that move, but Musa could see I disapproved of what he did.
" Guys, we aren't alone", said Blue in an alerted tone.
Everyone suddenly became aware of the presence of vicious dogs who had bloodshot eyes and growled like wolves, showing their wild-looking fangs. They surrounded us, no chance of escaping. We had aeroplane versus jets, and now it was Men versus dogs.
