Chapter 10: The Metallian
" Help me dad!", I cried out as I hung for dear life on a cliff
" Hang in there Joe!", he replied as he steadily climbed down the cliff to rescue me
At age sixteen, before me and my dad went for hill climbing, he had advised me that I should check the ropes to make sure they were secure and liable for use. But being ignorant, I left my duty and was bothering myself with unnecessary things. We left home that day and drove to a cliff. Hill climbing was one of the many sports my father advised me to do. He grew to love it some much, and wanted his beloved son to also share his experience. Although I really wasn't interested in it, I had no choice but to accept, since my words can't change my father's decisions
The hook hit the air and fastened to the cliff. Dad checked it to see if its hold was strong, and when he was convinced, he gave me one of the ropes and fastened himself to his rope. I did the same, and so father and son climbed the cliff together, although father climbed faster than son
However, my rope was breaking without my knowledge. Dad almost reached the top of the cliff when he looked down at me and yelled
" Hurry up slow-poke!", he teased
" Seriously dad?", I asked, a little bit annoyed
" Just be fast my boy. I thought you would have reached here sooner or later"
" When I have better things to be doing at home!"
Dad frowned and said," Just be careful and be quick"
Annoyed, I spread out my hands wide and yelled," Yeah! I'm being careful!"
Then it dawned on me that I was slowly coming down, even though I wasn't responsible for that. Before I realised what was really going on, the rope broke, flashing my life right before me. My father yelled in terror when he saw me falling. Luckily for me, I caught hold of a branch and hanged on for dear life
Dad immediately climbed down the cliff until he reached me. I begged for help, but he told me to continue climbing. We argued but in the end I had no choice but to climb. He followed me closely so as not to endanger my life. Surprisingly, we reached the top of the cliff and laid down flat on the floor
" Why did you choose not to help me?", I asked
" That's because I wanted you to know that help doesn't come all the time. Most times, we have to face our problems ourselves. Bringing others will be of much burden and may cost you much. At least you know that today, pride almost cost you more than you wanted to pay"
I sighed at this and realised that pride and arrogance yield unproductive results. Therefore, do what you're meant to do and stay alive.

The bullet escaped from my gun and hit my dad. But the expected result was abortive. I heard the sound of a bullet hitting an iron. I know that I didn't miss my target, but I was shocked to see what it had become. A big, muscled creature, having metal as its skin, was burning in anger as the bullet hit him. Dad was no longer laughing, but he stared at me, hoping to rip me apart. His body shone like a polished metal, and he looked bigger than the dead zombie I saw earlier
No one told me to run. After all, your father just mutated into a metallic zombie and I wasn't going to get crushed to pieces. I ran as fast as I could, hearing the roars of an enraged monster, tearing its way for my blood. I ducked when dad threw an iron bar, then continued as I outsmarted him by quickly taking my right while he slipped and fell. But in all, he refused to quit. Roaring like a savage beast, he gained more speed, then stopped and did a wind clap. The results where in his favour, as everything, including me, got caught by the wind. I fell, landing face first on the floor. While struggling to get back to my feet, dad rushed like a Hulk and was about to crush me when something dragged him away. A huge magnetic object pulled dad until he got stuck. While he wrestled to get free, a figure emerged with a gun pointing at me. I sighed when I saw it was Erik
" Great. Its you. So now you finally have the chance to kill me huh?", I asked
" I've changed my mind Joe", Erik replied," Now that your dad is infected, you're the only one who can stop this havoc once and for all"
" Oh really?" I said as he laid his gun aside
" Yeah. But first we'll have to get rid of your dad"
" What!"
" Don't argue with me. You can see that that thing won't hold him for long. Damn these creatures! I'll call this one a metallian"
Metallian, I thought. Then an idea hit me straight in the head. Metals react with acids to liberate hydrogen. I vividly remembered where the concentrated sulphuric acid was kept. Although this could kill dad, there was no other option
" I'll be back Erik. I know what'll kill him"
" Then what're'ya waiting for? Get you ass moving!"
I ran as fast as I could and found the sulphuric acid. Hearing some thundering sound, I realised than dad got himself free, and Erik, my newly found ally, was in trouble, contending against my dad, the metallian.
