Chapter 13

I threw a wish in the well
Don't ask me, I'll never tell
I looked at you as it fell
And now you're in my way

'Don't do it Gavin. You'll end up in an insane asylum. They'll throw you in there faster than you can blink.' I warned.

'I can see a ghost. And no one else can see her. She's cursed and she needs my help to break it. And that's what I've been doing these past few weeks. Helping a seventeen year old ghost who also happens to be a witch break a two hundred year old curse. Does that sound believable to you? At all?' Gavin lashed out. And of course he doesn't listen to me.

'You're going to regret this when you're in an asylum and I'm taunting you through the plastic window they put in your room instead of glass so you don't hurt yourself. And they'll put those padded boxes on your hands. And don't think just because you're in an asylum you're going to get out of helping me break my curse. Even we have to help lunatics knit sweaters and socks, you're going to do the good deeds.'

'When you put it like that, of course it sounds dumb and stupid. And unbelievable and completely unrealistic.' Tom rolled his eyes.

'But we know you dude. You're the least likely to loose your mind. Tom is the most likely. I'm just in the middle.' Leo shrugged.

This earned a word of protest from Tom. 'Hey!'

'Face it dude. It's fact.' Leo shrugged nonchalantly. 'And Gavin, don't ever ever phrase things like that. Ever. Do you want to get thrown into a madhouse?'

'You believe me? Me?' Gavin gaped, surprise coloured his tone.

'I'll admit it sounds crazy but we trust. If you say so then we believe you.' Leo shrugged.

'Of course bro.' Tom shrugged.

'You were always the dumb one among us.' Leo said.

'I get better grades than both of you.' Gavin defended.

'Sometimes.' Leo corrected. 'But you have to be pretty stupid to think we wouldn't believe you. I knew there was something fishy about the way the security footage from when we beat up that Lizard disappeared and soon after you started acting weird. That had something to do with this ghost right?'

'Yes that was her.' Gavin admitted. 'Her name is Vasilisa Rosemary.'

'What does she want from you? We'll tease you about her being girl later.' Leo said.

'Nothing bad. I'm just helping her...'

'Break a two hundred year old curse. We heard you the first time.' Tom interrupted. 'If that doesn't sound bad to you, I don't even want to know what your definition of bad is.'

'It's not as bad as it sounds. Seriously guys. Basically she's just making me do good deeds and stuff.'

'Oh.' Tom mouthed.

'I don't see why you thought you had to hide that from us. We thought you were in some kind of trouble. Anyway you gotta talk to Kelsey.' Leo said.

'Kelsey? What does she have to do with any of this?'

'She was worried about you dude.' Leo shrugged. His body language became a little defensive. Something both Gavin and I picked up on.

'And you know this how?' Gavin's eyes narrowed to slits. He exuded a dangerous calm that hinted that saying the wrong thing right now could be potentially dangerous and definitely life threatening for Leo.

I guess all that brotherly love flies out the window when Kesley comes into play.

'She was worried. You weren't talking to her as much anymore and she said sometimes she'd catch you talking to yourself around the house and that you were acting weird and out of character. She didn't know what to do so she came to me and asked for my help.' Leo replied.

'She came to you? And that's it?' His voice was deceptively soft.

Kelsey, you have a big brother who's willing to fight the world for you and you don't even know it.

'Yes that was it! But she's really worried. You should talk to her. Soon. When I saw her, she was in the verge of tears.'

'Because of me.' Gavin whispered. His eyes turned soft. The tension is the room diffused almost as quickly as it had come. 'I shouldn't have neglected her. You're right. I'll talk to her. Explain everything.'

'Word of advice,' Tom said. 'Don't dump it on her the same way you did us. Ease her into it. Or else you're buying yourself an all expense paid one-way ticket to an asylum.'

'So, the ghost. Rosemary. Is she here right now?' Leo asked.

'Yeah, don't call me Rosemary. Ever.' I glared. 'Tell him that.'

'She said you shouldn't call her Rosemary.' Gavin relayed. I glared at him pointedly before he finally added, 'Ever.'

'Cool! So she's here right now and she can hear and see us and everything but we can't see her?' Leo asked.

'Yeah, pretty much. You don't know how lucky you are. She can be very annoying when she wants to be. Which she does. All the time.' Gavin replied.

'This is some twilight zone stuff. It's amazing. So what can she do exactly? Walk through walls? What else?' Tom asked excitedly.

'You sure keep dumb company but considering how stupid you are to begin with it, it shouldn't surprise me. Can I walk through walls? What else can I do?! I thought you were stupid but your friends definitely take the cake. What do they think I am? Some lab rat? Or a cartoon? Oh, no. I know! A science project? I mean come on! Did your parents drop all of you on your heads when you were kids?'

'Well, right now, she's insulting us. All of us. Mostly you guys but yeah, she's throwing me in there freely as well. Very freely actually. Did I mention she's particularly skilled in the art of insulting people?' Gavin said.

'I guess we deserved that.' Leo commented.

'But this is our first ghost situation. She can't expect us to not be curious.' Tom said.

'She can't expect you to have a pinch of common sense either.' I remarked. Gavin winced.

'Well, I'm not relaying that part.' He muttered.

'What did she say?' Tom asked in excitement.

'You don't wanna know.' Gavin squashed all his excitement at one go.

'She's mean? I want to feel sorry for you but I can't because she's a ghost and that's just way too cool.' Tom shoved him playfully.

'You won't think so if you could hear her.' Gavin muttered.

'She sounds like exactly what you need. You're always so self assured and good with girls. It makes you kinda arrogant.' Leo smirked.

'Like you're any better.' Gavin rolled his eyes.

'You don't get to point fingers. You're the worst of them all. The blackest pot in the kitchen.'

'I am not.' Gavin scowled.

'Tell that to someone who hasn't studied you intensively for five months.' I said drily.

'You mean stalked.' He corrected. Leo and Tom exchanged a puzzled look.

'I wasn't stalking you. If I wanted to stalk someone, I pick a celebrity or a serial killer. Their life would be a lot more interesting.'

'You have an unhealthy obsession with serial killers.' Gavin stated.

'I know he's not talking to me.' Leo said.

'Gavin?' Tom frowned.

'I wasn't talking to either of you.' Gavin glared at me.

'Oh, Vasilisa. Tell her we say hi.' Leo said.

'Just because you can't hear her doesn't mean she can't hear you.' Gavin rolled his eyes.

'Well somebody's got his boxers in a twist.' Leo remarked. 'Thanks Vasilisa.'

'You're welcome. I'm happy to help.' I grinned. 'I really am.'

'Why does taunting me give you so much pleasure?' Gavin asked rhetorically.

'I have no idea but it's just strangely satisfying.'

'I hate you.'

'Why? I'm lovely.' I smiled.

'Now are you all just going to stand there doing nothing or are you going to work? You know, the reason Mrs Pitt asked for your help? Life's short. Get a move on.'

'Shut up. And you don't get to play the life's short card. You're two hundred years old.' Gavin rolled his eyes.

'Eh. Technicality.' I waved it off.

'Only you would call two hundred years a technicality.' He shook his head.

They proceeded to share the workload amongst themselves. Gavin who knows how hectic the library can be, tricked them into picking the harder jobs.

He will man the front desk. Leo and Tom are in charge of re-shelving and then all three of them will handle the third graders when they get here for their afternoon reading session. Gavin has nicknamed them, the monsters. Not very original in my opinion.

At exactly four o'clock, the first of the monsters strolled in with a bright airy smile on her face and a half finished lollipop in hand. All in all, she seemed very harmless. And that's what Leo and Tom told Gavin when he voiced his concerns about the "monsters".

Three minutes into reading time, they revised their stand.
