Page 67 of 92. Act Two: Scene Five.

Okay I will be adding a quick scene between that and the next one. I will be calling it Scene Five-and-a-Half. It will derail the musical's plot from that point, so call it an AU if you would like.

Also, Evan letting go and not actually falling isn't revealed until Act Two: Scene Eight. Keep that in mind.

Act Two: Scene Six and a Half.

Stage lights come back on, and they're in Jared's bedroom. Only set pieces are a bed, nightstand, and candle.

Jared is sitting on his bed, him failing at attempting to hide his passive aggressive tone.

Jared: I guess you're back here for more emails, huh?

Evan: Actually, no. I'm here so that we can finish our Spanish project as soon as possible and get it over with.

Jared: O-oh. Okay then. Let us start, shall we?

Evan simply removes a binder and pencil from his back pack and begins working, not even looking up at Jared. Jared shows visible disappointment.

Jared: So...is it nice having your cast off?

Evan: We've already talked about this. Like literally a few days ago.

Jared: Well yeah, but why not again. One upside is you can jack off to Connor again now-

Evan: Goodbye.

Jared is taken aback by Evan's abrupt decision to leave. He weakly smiles and attempts to recover from it.

Jared: Bu-but we haven't finished the project yet.

Evan: We'll just split the parts and then pretend we did it together.

Jared: Why do you want to leave so soon thou-

Evan: Because I realize that you don't want me here. I'm going to say what we both already know: You don't need me anymore and I don't need you anymore.

Jared is flustered and is frantically trying to think of a way to get Evan to stay.

Jared: That's a lie! You need me; you need me to make the e-mails!

Evan: I'll just find a tutorial or some shit, it's the goddamn internet!

Jared: I'll tell everyone about the lie! About Connor Project!

Evan: Why do not want me leaving so badly! You finally don't have to deal with me. I finally don't have to deal with you.

Evan and Jared are both stunned at what Evan just said. Jared let's out a small whimper that Evan doesn't notice. Evan continues.

Evan: I finally have friends, have people who like me. Now, I won't have to deal with your stupid jokes and you being a bitch all the time!

Jared: Fu-fuck you Evan! Asshole!

Evan: Oh, so I'm the asshole now! I fell out of a fucking tree and you made masturbation jokes about it! I was in pain-

Jared: Be in as much pain as possible then! Go kills yourself for all I c-

Jared covers his mouth before he can finish his own sentence, realizing what he had just said. Evan just scoffs.

Evan: What's do you think I was doing jackass?

Jared: Wh-What?

Evan: I love trees! I've been climbing then forever! Did you really think I could just fall from one?! Like that?!Ever stopped to think about that!

Jared was appalled. He never knew about this. Anything about this. Probably insert some sort of audience gasping in here too.

Jared: Why did you-

Evan: Because why the fuck not! I didn't have any friends, I'm a burden, a mess, a waste, so why. The fuck. NOT?!

Evan was holding back tears at this point, biting his lips. Jared was covering his mouth, letting out whimpers. He collapses on the bed, still bawling.

Evan: Why are you crying?

Jared: Because it reminds me so much of me!

Evan realizes that he's triggered Jared and sits down on the bed, awkwardly hugging him.

Jared: I'm sorry! I-I always ca-called you a f-f-family friend, but that's not true. I do like you, I r-really do like you! I just-I...

Jared can't finish his sentence in between his hiccups.

Evan: Ssshhhh, it'll be alright. Just breathe. In, out. In, out. Okay, good.

Jared isn't keeping with the pattern. Evan notices and get behind Jared, in a spooning sort of action, but sitting up. Pushing down Jared's shoulders, he wraps around Jared and breathes in his ear to try and get him to synchronize with the pattern. It works, and they sit like that for a little bit.

Evan: Now, tell me one thing you taste.

Jared looks confused.

Jared: Why, you wanna try some?

Evan: Jared, stop with the jokes.

Jared shuts his mouth.

Evan: Now. Just tell me one thing you taste.

Jared: Umm, some beer from earlier.

Evan: Two things you can smell.

Jared: The...umm...the candle and sweat.

Evan: What does the candle smell like.

Jared: Lavender.

Evan: Good. Three things you can hear.

Jared: The air-conditioning, the rustling of sheets, and a car horn outside.

Evan: Be more specific about the air-conditioning. What about the air conditioning is making a sound?

Jared: the air coming out of the vents.

Evan: Four things you can feel. Physically.

Jared: The soft bed sheets, the hard zipper on your jacket, the cold ground beneath my feet, my rough jeans against my legs, and um the air blowing onto me making me cold.

Evan: Five things you can see.

Jared: The bed. You. My legs. The candle. The nightstand.

Evan: Good job. You did wonderful.

Evan separates from Jared. They are now facing each other on the bed.

Jared: My heart is still racing but like, less now? Evan I'm scared. This is scary and I don't like it one bit. This feels horrible.

Evan: Just breathe. I know it feels like something is sitting on your chest but just breathe. Focus on your surroundings.

Jared follows Evan's instructions. His breathing quickens again and Evan forces him to lie down on his lap. Evan runs his fingers through Jared's hair.

Jared takes a few deep breaths in and out, and suddenly is fine.

Jared: What was that? That was...scary and...debilitating. All I could focus on was everything wrong.

Evan: That was an anxiety attack. Was that your first one?

Jared: Yes. I want it to never happen again.

Evan: Well, you seem to be one of the lucky ones who's last only a few minutes. For literally everyone else, they last at least an hour-

Jared: How can I stop them.

Evan is quiet and he looks down. He fiddles with his fingers and hunches his shoulders. In a small voice he replies,

Evan: I don't know. I don't even know how you ended it so quickly in the first pl-

Jared: The smell.

Evan: What?

Jared: The... smell... of y-you. Not like in a bad way or anything just like I smelled your jacket and it just made it go away like magic and now I'm rambling I'm sorry.

Evan giggles.

Evan: Is that what I always sound like?

Silence. Jared sits up suddenly and faces Evan.

Jared: Evan, I'm so sorry. I was a dick, and instead of just telling the truth that I like hanging out with you, I drove you to suicide.

Evan: ...

Jared: You can leave if you want now. I won't blame you.

Evan: You said it reminded you of yourself. What does that mean?

Jared visibly tenses.

Jared: Oh nothing, it's fine.

Evan: Tell me.

Jared: No.

Evan: Jared, please.

Evan is pleading with Jared, attempting eye contact. Jared only avoids looking in his eyes.

Evan: Jared, come one, it'll help-

Jared: I SAID NO EVAN.

Silence. Evan's expression changes to one of indignance. His back straightens.

Evan: Fine then. I thought we were finally getting somewhere. Friends tell each other things. They don't lie-

Jared: That's rich, coming from you.

Evan is on the verge of tears. Before anything else happens, Evan grabs his bag and leaves, pulling the hoodie up and over his head.

Jared sinks into his bed slowly. Abruptly, he grabs the candle and pushes the palm of his left hand into the flame. He screams in pain, but does un-tense. He puts the candle back on the nightstand and breaths out, a smile on his face.

Cut to black.
