Queen Songs That Word/Text Paint
"Also known as tone painting or text painting, word painting is the musical depiction of words in text. Despite it's seeming reference to a literary / visual art, word painting is mostly known as a musical art form. The music tries to imitate the emotion, action, or natural sounds as described in the text. For example, an instrument might imitate the sound of an animal mentioned, or if the text describes a sad event, the music might be in a minor key."

70's songs:
The Loser In The End: at the line "and all she gets, is 'goodbye, Ma'," there's a door slam.
-
Killer Queen : a phaser (?) effect is used on " dynamite with a laser beam" giving it a 'laser' sound. And when they mention "as playful as a pussycat", the guitar does this meowing type sound.
Tenement Funster : Roger sings the words "speed of light" slightly faster than any other line. And the music releases A bit when he mentions that open car.
Stone Cold Crazy : at the part "they got the sirens loose" Brian's guitar imitates a siren with feedback.
--
Lazing On A Sunday Afternoon : it has a bicycle bell after the words "Bicycling on every Wednesday evening".
You're My Best Friend : the vocals hold out as Freddie sings "been wan-dering round," and stop the long note at "still come back to you".
'39: the middle-eight section (also known as the bridge) goes through some unusual chords, and like Good Company, gives the effect that the listener is time-travelling. Which fits both Brian May songs.
Bohemian Rhapsody : at the first "any way the wind blows" in the intro, at the words "shivers down my spine" the guitar makes wind chime effects, quite realistically, and during the operatic section, timpani drums or tom toms were used to echo thunder at the "thunderbolt and lightning" part.
--
Bicycle Race : this song has a whole bicycle bell solo in the middle. But also at the end, Roger hits the cymbal, making a "bell/ding" sound.
Dead On Time : at the end, where it says, "you're dead!" And you hear a thunder clap. Real thunder.
Don't Stop Me Now : tension builds up, then releases at the words, "oh, oh, oh, explode!", the song has lots of great imagery too, describing things like "a tiger defying the laws of gravity" and "A rocket ship on my way to mars" Also is fast paced at the line "travelling at the speed of light".
--
Somebody To Love : when they say "lord", it goes up high. And at the "I just keep losing my beat" the rhythm changes slightly as if it's falling out of time, but it's not.
Drowse: the tempo is in 6/8, aka waltz timing, giving it a drowsy feeling, along with the slide guitar. The chord progression, much like I'm So Tired, has a sleepy effect. (Example: A, Ab/A-flat, D, etc.)
Teo Torriatte (Let Us Cling Together): the whole melody is very much in a Japanese mode/style, and interestingly, the bass guitar does what a gayageum (traditional Korean instrument) would do, but lower.
--
All Dead , All Dead : as it is about grief, it's fitting that the guitars mimic a pipe organ solo during instrumental, as you might hear at funerals.
---------
80's to 90's songs:
Another One Bites The Dust : the melody has this tense, creeping feeling as describing Steve, then doesn't resolve as Freddie sings "hanging on the edge of your seat" , the drums have a very "biting" sound.
-
Put Out The Fire : after the line "tell me that old-fashioned gun law, is dead" , the snare drum is 'attacked' by Roger. Similarly, at the end, when Freddie sings "shoot" several times, Roger hits the snare after each time.
--
Friends Will Be Friends : it sounds like a warm hug with the chord progression and cheesy lyrics. But still feels like they're there for you.
--
The Invisible Man : also obvious, there's this constant whisper in the chorus to convey the lyrics. And with headphones, some parts go from one ear to the other. Also the band members' names being heard in between.
I Want It All : the singing gets louder on the word "screamin' ", and when he says "gonna shake you to the ground," there's a heavier vibrato.
Breakthru : like the video, the song has a train energy/breaking through energy. And Roger breathes quickly to the beat as well.
Rain Must Fall : before the guitar solo, the note on "fall" is held out as it goes into a guitar solo.
--
Delilah : this one's pretty obvious. There's a whole meowing section, where Brian's guitar actually meows along with Freddie.
Bonus: Brian's guitar sound effects that a guitar usually can't make.
-Good Company : clarinet, bells, trumpets, trombone.
-BoRhap : shivers , wind sounds (at the first "any way the wind blows")
-Delilah: meowing.
-Stone Cold Crazy: sirens. (At "they got the sirens loose")
-Gimme The Prize (Kurgan's Theme) : bagpipe solo, as the movie is portrayed in Scotland.
-Seven Seas Of Rhye: a trumpet (kinda throughout the whole song, but especially at the " I challenge the mighty titan and his troubadour " line)
