You lay your head back on the building you're currently leaning against and close your eyes. The silence that filled the barricade was unnerving and didn't feel right. Just last night, the barricade was filled with laughter and joyful talk of victory against the ruthless French government, but now, it was silent.
"How could this happen," you think as you feel your lower lip begin to tremble. "How can she be dead? My best friend..." You watched Eponnine move the gun away from Marius towards her body, taking the bullet for Marius. She sacrificed herself for him because she loved him. As much as you want to be upset at her, you can't. "I would do the same thing," you think as you look over at Enjorlas, who was currently talking with the new guy, who warned us about the French's surprise attack.
The smallest of smiles graces your face once you see his face. You and Enjorlas have been courting for almost a year now and you two were completely in love. The two of you met at the first meeting for the revolution and even though the two of you only told each other your names as a greeting, it was the beginning of your relationship. Soon the two of you began to talk more before and after meetings, which lead to the two of you walking home together and soon to him asking you to court him. But that time feels like ages ago, especially now with some dear friends dead and gone.
"Y/n," you suddenly hear a voice say, pulling you from your thoughts. Looking up, you see Enjorlas standing next to you with a concerned look on his weary face. "Are you alright?"
You give Enjorlas a small smile. "Considering the circumstances, I'm alright."
"Are you sure," he asks as his hand goes to your cheek, gently wiping away a tear you did not know was there.
The minute you feel him wipe the tear away, your lip begins to slightly tremble and your eyes begin to fill with tears. You close the distance between you two and wrap your arms around Enjorlas, sobbing into his chest. You feel his warm protective arms wrap around you and pull you a little closer to him. You lightly clutch his shirt in your hands as you continue to cry, the grief of all the lives lost finally catching up to you. And for a moment, that's all that happens between the two of you, no words are spoken and none are needed. Just being in Enjorlas' arms is all you need and want.
After a few minutes, your sobs soon slow to quiet tears and you move your head from Enjorlas' chest so you can look up at him, both his and your arms wrapped around each other. You see him softly smile and you smile back. "Marry me," you hear Enjorlas say as he meets your eyes.
Your eyes widen. "What," you ask, not believing what you just heard.
"Marry me," Enjorlas says again. "Tonight, before the battle tomorrow. I was planning on asking you tomorrow, but I can't wait any longer and with the uncertainty of tomorrow.....I don't want to die with any regrets, and not asking you to be my wife would be the biggest regret I could ever have. So Y/n, will you marry me?"
You feel tears of joy begin to fill your eyes as a smile spreads across your face. "Yes," you happily say as you gently place your hand on Enjorlas' cheek. "Yes, I will marry you." And with that, you gently press your lips to Enjorlas', which he returns a second later.
The sound of clapping causes the two of you to pull away from each other. You see everyone in the barricade, with clapping hands and smiles on their tired faces, looking at the two of you. A shy smile spreads across your face as you feel your eyes begin to water again. Everyone in the barricade was your family and there was no place you would rather get engaged at then with your family to congratulate you.
"If you need someone to ordain your marriage, I can do it," an unfamiliar voice from behind you says. Turning, you see the man who warned everyone about the surprise French attack that happened earlier this evening.
You smile softly at the man. "Thank you monsieur," you say.
"Please, call me Jean," the man says with a small smile. "My name is Jean Valjean."
"Well, thank you Jean," you say to the man.
*A small time skip*
Despite the fact that you were getting married in the barricade, everyone insisted on making this as real a wedding as they could make it. Everyone was doing something whether it was cleaning up debris, setting up chairs and tables, or finding wine and alcohol, or drinking it in Grantaire's case. You were watching all of this happen from the top floor of the café where the meetings were usually held as a few of the women were cleaning you up a little, washing the dust and grime from your s/c skin and brushing your h/l h/c hair.
"There," you hear one of the women say. "All done." You smile and stand up as you see one of the women hand you a mirror. You see yourself in the mirror, hair all brushed and a face clean of any dirt or grime from the earlier battle.
After thanking the women, you head down the stairs of the building and see Marius at the bottom of the stairs waiting for you. As you near the bottom of the stairs, Marius looks up at you and smiles, which you return. The two of you agreed that he would be the one to walk you down the aisle since Marius was one of your closest friend; he was like an older brother to you. You walk closer to Marius and hug him tightly, which he returns.
"Are you ready," he hear him ask a moment later as you two pull away.
Taking a deep breath, you nod. "Yes," you say, smiling despite the fact that you were actually a little nervous.
"Then lets go," Marius says, offering you his arm. After taking his arm, Marius gives you a reassuring smile as the two of you walk to the closed doors, which open a moment later.
The sight before you brings tears of joy to your eyes. Everyone had a seat, not one seat was empty, and they were all standing, looking at you with smiles on their faces. A well-worn red sheet was laid on the ground between the two sections of chairs, making the aisle you were about to walk down. And Enjorlas stood at the end of this aisle, Grantaire at one side and Jean Valjean on the other. And as you began to walk down the makeshift aisle, a tear of complete joy slid down your cheek. Despite your wedding happening the night before a battle that was full of complete uncertainty, you couldn't deny the fact that this wedding was better than anything you could have ever dreamed.
Soon, you reach the end of the aisle. Looking up at Marius, you watch as he takes your hand and gently places it into Enjorlas'. You take a few steps so you are next to Enjorlas, your eyes on his the whole time. Marius stands behind, acting as your "maid of honor" since the one who would have been your maid of honor....is no longer around.
"Friends," you hear Jean Valjean say. "We are here today not only for the liberation of France, but to also see these two wed. It is in times like these where we can look to these two and see that love can overcome any obstacle." Then turning to Enjorlas, he says. "Repeat after me, 'I, Enjorlas.'"
"I, Enjorlas," Enjorlas says as he turns and looks at you.
"Take you y/n."
"Take you y/n."
"For my lawful wife."
"For my lawful wife."
"To have and to hold from this day forward."
"To have and to hold from this day forward."
"For better, for worse."
"For better, for worse."
"For richer, for poorer."
"For richer, for poorer."
"In sickness and health."
"In sickness and health."
"Until death do us part."
"Until," Enjorlas stops, his breath hitching ever so slightly. You see his eyes begin to fill with tears. With tears in your eyes as well, you reach a hand forward and gently place it on his cheek. Seeming to take comfort in that, Enjorlas takes a deep breath. "Until death do us part," he finishes.
Once Enjorlas finishes, Jean Valjean turns to you and you say the same vows, with only a few words differing from Enjorlas'. And once you finish your vows, Jean Valjean smiles and looks between the two of you. "Then by the power vested in me, I now pronounce you husband and wife. You may kiss your bride."
With a huge smile, you feel Enjorlas place his arms around your waist and pull you closer to him. He leans in towards you and you meet his halfway. Your lips press against each other and the sound of applause fills your ears. You smile as you kiss Enjorlas. A moment later, the two of you, with smiles on both of your faces, pull away and turn towards the crowd, which bursts into louder applause. And as you look back at Enjorlas, you realize that despite whatever happens tomorrow, you were able to marry the man that you love and that nothing, not even death, could change that fact.
