Saving Him (Marius x Reader)

*Your POV*
Tears fall down your cheeks as you watch Garvoche being carried back into the barricade. You run over to him, take his hand, and hold it to your chest. Garvoche was just shot by the French soldiers as he was getting more gunpowder from some of the corpses. Everyone, including yourself, begged him to come back, but he didn't listen.

"You at the barricades listen to this," you hear the French army general yell. "The people of Paris sleep in their beds. You have no chance, no chance at all. Why throw your lives away?"

You look up and look at everyone. Your eyes lock with Marius's for a second before he looks back at Enjorlas, your older brother. Enjorlas is the mastermind behind the whole revolution and when he first told you about it, you whole heartedly supported him and wanted to help him. You two were the first two members of the ABC café, but soon more joined and became the group gathered here now.

"Let us die facing our foe," you hear Enjorlas say. "Make them bleed while we can."

"Make them pay through the nose," you hear someone say.

"Make them pay for every man," you say as you give Gavorche's hand a final squeeze before letting go of it.

"Let all those rise to take our place until the earth is free," you hear Enjorlas yell.

You smile as you look at your brother. He was always the one who could rally people, and now was the best time to possess that skill. But the peace is broken as the generals yells," Cannons!"

You rush over to the stockpile and grab a gun before running behind the barricade to where Marius is. Quickly loading it, you watch as Marius shoots his musket, gunfire ringing through the air. Marius turns around and you throw him a loaded musket as he throws you his empty one.

You quickly reload the gun. Everything is chaotic; people are running around and gunfire and cannons are the only sounds you hear.

You're about to hand Marius the reloaded gun when you see a French soldier on top of the barricade. Without thinking, you aim the gun and pull the trigger. The man falls, dead.

A ragged breath escapes as you realize what you just did. You just killed someone. Everything around you seems to slow down as the guilt begins to eat at you. "Why did I pull the trigger," you think. "I could have just yelled."

"Y/N," you hear a voice yell as a pair of strong hands grip your shoulders.

You blink and look to see Marius in front of you, concern in his eyes. "Are you okay," he asks.

Nodding, you reply,"Considering the circumstances, yes."

"Then you need to leave the barricade right now," he says, seriously.

You're shocked. "What no," you say. "I want to help!"

"The barricade is overrun," he says. "You need to escape while you can. Please, I can't let you die in here."

Tears begin to fill your eyes. "I can't let you die either," you say. Even though you haven't admitted it, you have had a huge crush on Marius for a long time now. So leaving the barricade without him wasn't an option.

"I would rather die knowing that your safe than live thinking you're dead," he says, his voice slightly quavering. "Please y/n. Do this for me."

You debate for a moment before sighing. "Okay, just don't die please," you say. You then see a door opened slightly, so you run and enter the building. You then run to the closest window, so you can keep an eye on Marius and your brother.

You can't find Enjorlas anywhere, but you see Marius. As your eyes land on Marius, the worst thing happens. The gunshot rings in your ears as you watch Marius fall from the shot.

"Marius," you scream. You run out of the building and over to where he lays.

"Come on, Marius," you plead as a tear slides down your cheek. "Get up, please."

Marius meets your eyes. "You need to get far away from here," he gets out before passing out.

You shake your head. "Not without you," you say. You put your arms under his arm pits and begin to drag him. He's heavier than you thought as you stop to take a quick breath. That's when you notice a sewage grate.

You grimace at the thought, but it's the only way. Dragging Marius, you make it and pull the grate open. You cough at the smell; it's absolutely revolting, bit what other choice do you have?

You push Marius in before getting in after. Once in, you slip and begin sliding. Once the sliding ends, you land in the sewer system. You begin gagging at the smell. Turning around, you see Marius. "I need to hurry," you think as you grab his arms.

After what feels like an eternity, you make it to the exit. A smile spreads across your face as you speed up. Once out, you see a carriage.

You yell to get its attention. Thankfully, it stops. The driver turns and gasps once he sees you. "By the saints, what happened," he exclaims.

"He needs a doctor," you say as you get him the carriage.

The man nods and starts the carriage once your in. As the carriage goes, you look down at Marius. "Hang in there," you whisper. "You're going to make it."

The carriage comes to a stop a few minutes later. You open the door and get Marius out. Dragging him again, you open the door to the hospital. "Help, we need a doctor," you yell.

A man, who looks like a doctor, comes out and runs out. "Get a bed," he yells before turning towards Marius.

"What happened," he asks.

"He was shot," you answer, voice shaking.

"Do you know where," he asks.

You look around and see where. "There," you say, pointing to the wound.

The doctor inspects the area. "Your friend is lucky," he says. "If the bullet went through him, he would be dead by now, but since it isn't, there's a chance we can save him." You smile at the news.

Some men come over and put Marius on a bed and pick up before carrying it out to the operating room. You start to follow, but the doctor stops you. "If you could wait out here, I'll call you in when I'm done," he says.

You nod. "Okay," you say, since there's nothing else to say.

Three hours later
You're sitting in the waiting room,in clean clothes, when the door opens and the doctor walks out. Your head snaps up and you walk over to him. "Is Marius okay," you ask.

"He is going to be completed fine," the doctor says. "He's still asleep, but you can go in if you want."

"Thank you so much," you say before going into Marius's room.

You quietly open the door and see Marius asleep. You grab a chair before walking over to his bed. Setting the chair next to it, you sit and take his hand. "I'm glad you made it," you whisper.

You see Marius stir a little before his eyes open slightly. "Y/N," he says, weakly.

"Marius," you exclaim, happy that he's awake.

"Where am I," he asks as his eyes open.

"You're in the hospital," you say.

"How did I get here," he asks.

You bite your lip. "It's a long story," you say. "But don't worry about it. I'm glad you're awake."

He smiles a little. "I'm glad you're here," he says.

You feel your cheeks get warm. "I'll always be there for you," you say.

"I need to tell you something," he says. "But you need to get closer." Confused, you lean closer.

"Why do I need to get clos-," you start but are cut off when a pair of lips press against yours.

Your eyes widen, but close a second later. The kiss was utter bliss and better than you dreamed.

The both pull away a minute later. "I love you, y/n," Marius says.

"I love you too," you say. "You should get some rest."

Marius nods. "Please don't leave," he says as his eyes begin to close.

"Don't worry," you say. "I'm not going anywhere."
