Yesterday

~ Based on the song 'Yesterday' by The Beatles. ~

Yesterday all my troubles seemed so far away.
Now it looks as though they're here to stay.
Oh, I believe in yesterday.'

_____

I remember.

I remember the days where I could smile without guilt, or laugh carelessly.
I remember a time when I loved someone with all my heart, not just the broken pieces left over.
I remember when I could be happy, and blissful.

I remember a lot, but yesterday was always the most vivid in my memories.

We called it yesterday, but it was really a whole summer in the 50's, spent at a beach resort, surrounded with my friends and family. I met Stanley there. That was the beginning of my yesterday.

Stanley Wilkins: The love of my life.

Now, I'll admit Stanley wasn't much of a looker. He had a small nose and large Dumbo ears that I loved teasing him about. His hair shone a burnt orange colour and his eyes were a swampy green. Freckles dotted his cheeky face like constellations, and his smile could light up an underground tunnel.

Stan wasn't much of a looker, but it was alright because neither was I.

He always used to say to me, 'Doris, I've always dreamt of ending up with a beautiful girl, but I ended up with you. But it's okay, because I can't spend my whole life dreaming. You're my reality Doris, and you're better than any dream I could ever have dreamt."

Stan made my world spin round, and I made his day. We fell in love, yesterday.

But yesterday was yesterday and soon the skies turned dark and the sun deserted us. But it was ok, because we enjoyed it together, clasping hands as we gazed into the sunset, promises shining in our eyes as we recited our vows, reclined with our daughter on a picnic mat, ambling to the movies with our grandchildren...

Yesterday was a lifetime ago, and soon we had to face today.

Or, I did.

Stan went away with the hours on the clock, disappeared as the sky began to light. It marked the end of yesterday. I wept while the sun rose and the birds woke up.

But now it's today, and it's my time.

Tomorrow will be a different day. One where I'll be remembered today. I'm ready to go. The clock has stopped and the sun has gone down.

Tomorrow, there will be no today.

But maybe there'll be a yesterday, where Stan and I go.
