Chapter 25

Neo pulled off the main road. Towering trees faced them on both sides.

They'd used the emergency staircase to escape the Sailor's mate without further stares, though Neo knew the damage had already been done.

Whilst he was still on the case, he was going to make the most of it and they'd driven straight to where the electric point was marked on the map Charlie had found. She'd been silent, other than the occasional directions.

As they stepped out, the area hummed with mystery. For the most part, the road was quiet. Only a handful of passing cars even disturbed them as they started searching.

'What should we be searching for?' Neo raised his head and looked at Charlie.

'Hard to say,' she admitted. 'Could be a standard electric box. Could be something else.'

'Very helpful.' Neo rolled his eyes and Charlie smirked.

'Just keep looking. I want to find this place before it gets dark.'

Neo looked up at the light filtering through the trees. They still had many hours before they had to worry about that.

They kept walking a few metres apart from each other. Neo turned in circles, trying to see anything out of the ordinary, but everything looked fairly normal to him.

'How far away from the road do you think it is?' Neo asked. He turned back to see that they were already pretty hidden from view. He could only just make out the side panel of his car.

'It can't be much further,' muttered Charlie, though it sounded like she was trying to reassure herself more than Neo.

'I think we-' but he never got to finish his sentence as his foot clanged against something metal.

Charlie rushed over as Neo bent to look at the floor. He tried to dust off the leaf litter but realised it was all attached to something.

'What is that?' Charlie exclaimed as Neo lifted a net up.

'I don't know.' Neo stepped to the left so he could lift the entire thing up.

It was a black net, threaded with leaves and needles. Someone had even looped some ivy through to help it blend in with the forest floor.

'Well, we know what it was trying to hide at least.' Charlie nodded towards the metal doors placed straight into the ground.

Neo placed the net aside and felt around the doors. He pushed his hand through a hinged section and pulled the one door up.

The smell of rot and decay greeted them and they both wrinkled their nose.

Charlie fished a flashlight from her rucksack and clicked it on. Stone steps lead down to a dark tunnel, though from their position they couldn't see much.

Neo opened the other door, hoping it would provide more light, but the angle of the tunnel still left it in darkness.

Charlie went down first, holding the torch high to give them the most height. Both of them had to stoop, given the low ceiling, as they reached the bottom step. She flashed the light in either direction.

'Looks like the tunnel continues towards Felton.' She turned to look at the metal partition behind them. 'Then what is behind this?'

Neo stepped forward and lifted a broken lock up from the floor. It was rusted and covered in soil. 'Hard to tell if it's been broken recently.'

'Worth a look?' Charlie asked.

In answer, Neo pushed against the metal, hearing it groan as it creeped backwards. He stopped when there was a sizable gap that they could squeeze through.

Charlie placed a hand on his arm before he could go through. 'Let me go first. It'll be easier for me to get back if it's not safe.'

Neo pursed his lips but consented. 'Be careful.'

Charlie rolled her eyes. 'Like it'd be anything but.'

She put her flashlight in her mouth and shimmed through the gab.

The area behind the partition was dark, and the smell was much worse. She pulled the flashlight from her mouth and shone it around the cramped space, not seeing much.

There were no concrete beams holding up this part of the tunnel. Instead, old timber beams thicker than her leg were placed either side of her. She lifted her hand, feeling the wooden planks above her head, keeping the packed earth from caving in.

'You can come in, but go slow. It looks like they never secured this part of the tunnel,' she called to Neo.

No wonder there had been a partition blocking this part of the tunnel, she thought to herself. The whole thing looked like it could collapse at any minute.

Neo squeezed himself through and could understand Charlie's cautiousness. On the opposite side was the obvious result of one cave in already.

'They must have filled in the rest of the tunnel when the road was built,' Charlie mused as she headed towards the pile of rubble.

Neo shook his head. 'But the road was built in the forties, so how the hell did no one know about this?'

'I think they did,' Charlie admitted. 'The road is technically built on land owned by the Felton estate. Before that, it was just a really simple one track road. To build this, they would have had to put foundations in and get permission from Nathanial Felton to do it.'

'Something tells me he wouldn't have granted it without something in return,' Neo said, thinking about what little Charlie had said about him back in Felton Manor.

'I agree. And given his paranoia, these tunnels would have been important to him, but so would their anonymity. I can't help but wonder if the reason we can't get a decent map of this place is because of him.'

Neo mulled over her words. 'The local community would have been desperate for a decent road, maybe even enough for officials to bend the rules and plant false maps of the area in the archives and libraries. Anything to keep him happy and get Marton on the map.'

'They must have put the electric point on the map to mark a dangerous spot to build. If the road ever needed to be extended, that would have stopped them and the tunnel would be safe.' Charlie stepped forward to inspect the rubble when she tripped and fell against it.

A few larger rocks came loose and tumbled towards her, making her panic. If it wasn't for Neo dragging her back, she would have ended up with a few bruises to show for her fall.

'Easy, just hold still.' Neo held her as the rocks settled once again and the only sound was of their ragged breathing.

'That was too close for comfort.' Charlie puffed, her heartbeat not yet back to normal.

'You can say that again.' Neo hesitantly stepped forward and spotted something glinting against the torchlight.

He lifted the set of dog tags from the rubble. One was twisted and bent, but the other was intact.

'T Ward.' Neo read the etched name. 'Could be a left over from when the military occupied the manor?'

'Pass them to me,' Charlie demanded in a hushed voice.

Neo's gaze locked with hers as he passed them into her shaking hands, taking the torch from her as he did so. He watched her run her fingers over the metal almost reverently. In the dim light, he could see her eyes grow glassy with unshed tears.

'You know who they belong to,' Neo said.

Charlie nodded, clutching them in her hand and turning to view the wall of rubble.

'This isn't happening. This is a nightmare. Why? Why is this happening?' she begged before her legs gave way and she found herself kneeling in the dirt.

Neo pulled her into his side as the tears slipped down her cheeks. Great sobs wracked her body as she beat her fists against the ground.

'Who do they belong to, Charlie?'

Her sobs quietened down as she looked up at him.

'I stole them back for him. Neo, he'd never leave them. They were his prized possession, the last thing he had of his dad's after the man abandoned him and his mom.' She sniffled, burying her head in Neo's chest.

Neo held her close to him, but his eyes were trained on the wall of rubble. Horror settled inside him as he realised where they really were. Something told him they were in Jack Teece's final resting place.
