Chapter 23

Neo did a little digging himself after Charlie had left to visit Mrs Phillips. He'd already called Gwilt to inform him of the irregularities between the maps and his deputy was on the case, and since it was Neo's day off, he was free to do what he pleased, even if that meant looking into the Felton Pond Murders a little more.

His kids had already left for school and it gave him free run of the house. After a few domesticated chores were complete, he sat down with his laptop and a cup of coffee.

With every page he flicked through, he added another organisation to his list, until he focused on four. All practices that specialised in abortions in the private sector. There had been no abortion on Lucy Phillip's health records and that meant she must have seen someone privately.

Neo circled the third name down on his list. It was a small practice, 5 miles out of Wrexham and along a bus route directly from Marton; easily accessible for a teenager.

Neo grabbed his coat and headed out. Sometimes nothing could replace good old-fashioned police work, where you got boots on the ground.

After negotiating some traffic, Neo pulled up outside a fancy white building. It was all clean lines and big glass windows. He was tempted to just drive away. It was not the place where a teenager with very little money would come for help.

But he switched off his engine and made his way up the steps, regardless.

'How can I help you?' A crackly voice responded over the outside intercom.

'DCI Denzel of Marton Police Force, I was hoping to speak with someone.'

The door clicked open seconds later, and Neo let himself in.

'DCI, I'm Dr Nagita.' A smartly dressed woman met him. 'How can we help?'

Neo shook hands with her. 'I have a few questions. Would you be the one to ask?'

'I'm one of the partners here, please come through to my office.'

Dr Nagita led Neo through a small waiting room where several pregnant women and couples sat, looking anxious but excited. It was just as clean and white as the outside of the building, and Dr Nagita's office was no exception.

It was spacious and open. A screen was placed to one side, where the end of patient bed just poked out enough for Neo to see. Other than that, it was a typical office with all the fancy diplomas to prove it.

'How can I help you, DCI Denzel? As you're probably aware, we've never been in trouble with the law here before.'

Neo could tell she was nervous. Most professionals were when a badge turned up on the door asking questions. They were almost always afraid of adverse publicity, but a small percentage were nervous for other reasons. And they were always illegal reasons.

'In 2001, a legal abortion was administered to a teenager. A few days later, that teenager was murdered. I'm trying to trace if anyone has a record of her or possibly anyone who would have been with her?'

Dr Nagita was already shaking her head. 'I'm sorry even if I could give you our patient records, which would take a warrant, we had a fire in 2004. All our records prior to that were destroyed.'

'And there were no back ups?' Neo urged.

'In the previous partners' infinite wisdom, all back ups were kept in a small safe on site. They were melted by the time they pried the safe doors open.' Dr Nagita grimaced.

Neo leaned back in his chair. 'Can you tell me the history of this place, Dr Nagita? I need to know if my victim would have even come here.'

'Of course, anything to help. Today, this place is a fertility treatment clinic. We help couples with fertility issues conceive and we also help with private abortions and births.'

'And what about in the early 2000s?'

Dr Nagita bit her lip. 'It was before my time, before all the current partners' time. But it wasn't the same as it is now. Back then, the women's centre used to send abortions to the practice, or they offered help for minimum fee to those in need. It was seen as a public service, but we distanced ourself from the NHS. Became an entirely private clinic, was deemed easier that way.'

'So it wouldn't be unheard of for a teenager with little money to have an abortion at the practice?'

'I can't guarantee it, but yes, that would be something that this place could have offered. I just wish I could be more help.'

'You've been very helpful, Dr Nagita. I'll see myself out.'

Neo left the relieved looking doctor and headed back to his car. His nicotine withdrawal was hitting him hard, and he wrestled with himself about his next move, but his evil side won out.

Crossing the road, he went to the corner shop and waited in line.

His fingers twitched with the anticipation of his next smokey hit. It had only been over a week, but it felt like a lifetime since his last cigarette. With the way the case was going, he was surprised he hadn't caved before.

He pulled a £10 note from his wallet and waited for the mother in front of him to be served. His eyes focused on the back, where his bad habit usually lay in wait. But the typical blank gray doors were peppered with photos.

Neo frowned as he took in the banner above them.

'Next!'

Neo shuffled forward.

'What can I get you?' A bored teenager asked him.

'Those photos. Why are they there?'

The teenager straightened up and blinked at him, before turning to look at the photos as if he'd never seen them before.

'My dad and granddad opened the store 20 years ago this week. They took photos every day that first week to commemorate it.' He turned back to Neo. 'That's why they said I should work today. Something about family heritage. Just another way of saying we want a day off,' he grumbled.

'Do you mind if I look at those?'

The teenager gaped at him. 'Look mister, I can't-'

Neo flashed his badge. 'I'd appreciate a look at those photos.'

With shaking hands, the teenager passed them over. 'What's this about?'

But Neo ignored him. The smiling faces of two men stared back at him as he flicked through the images, but he wasn't interested in them; it was the building behind that he wanted to see.

He paused at one, when he saw two people heading into the clinic.

His ringtone broke his concentration, and he fished his phone out of his pocket, noticing Charlie's number before he accepted the call.

'Neo? I think we're right. The Bennetts are still at Felton.' Her breathy voice sounded. 'Neo?' she asked when he didn't respond.

'I think Jack Teece was the father of Lucy Phillips' child.'

Silence descended on the other end of the phone.

'What-why? How do you know?' Charlie whispered.

Neo held up the picture, which showed it all clearly. 'Because I'm looking at a picture of the both of them heading into an abortion clinic in Wrexham in 2001.'

                                                                                ***

Neo placed the boiling mug of tea in front of Charlie. Her hands reached for it automatically, but her mind was preoccupied with the photo in front of her.

'It's definitely Lucy. Her mom knitted her that rainbow scarf for Christmas. She used to wear it all the time,' she mumbled, unable to process what she was seeing.

'It doesn't mean for definite that Jack is the father,' Neo reminded her.

Charlie sighed. 'That's true, but then why did she trust Jack and not George. George could have easily gone to support her. He was the supportive type, but Jack was a whole other story. This, this doesn't feel like something Jack would do, not unless he had to.'

She pushed the picture away. Just as she was sure that the bronzed haired girl was Lucy, she knew the black-haired boy was Jack. He was even wearing the khaki trousers he had loved, and he'd tied his hair back the way Charlie remembered he did when he had to concentrate. No, there was no doubt in her mind. The couple at the back of the photo were undeniably Lucy and Jack.

'I still don't understand where they got the money from. The clinic had said they could have been referred from the women's centre, but I can't see two teenagers reaching out like that,' mused Neo.

'Me either. Plus, the local women's centre would have sent her to Shrewsbury, but that seems a little too close to home when you're carrying a secret.' Charlie thought over the last few weeks before Lucy's murder, wondering if she'd missed something, when it struck her.

She chuckled darkly and shook her head, making Neo focus on her.

'You've thought of something?'

'I never put two and two together before. Those last few weeks before Lucy and George were murdered, Jack was stealing anything he could get his hands on. I thought he was just being a stupid, bored teenager, but what if he wasn't stealing to get cash for himself?'

Neo rubbed at his jaw, kicking himself for not having realised it sooner. He knew Jack's background and his record, he'd heard Charlie mention the thefts, but he'd overlooked them in much the same way she had. In a way, he was no better than the original DCI on the case. Teenagers will be teenagers, wasn't a good enough excuse, he cursed himself mentally.

'He was doing it to help Lucy,' Neo agreed.

'He was doing it to get himself out of the shit,' countered Charlie. Jack had been her friend, but that had never made him a good person. She knew that if Lucy had wanted to keep the baby, Jack would have been out of there quicker than an Olympic sprinter. Daddy life was not something Jack Teece could have handled.

Neo remained silent as Charlie sipped her tea, lost in thought. He couldn't imagine what she was going through, so many secrets, so many little lies, just so that people could protect themselves. The original case had been doomed even before it began.

'At least Alice was better today. The doctors have started her on new medication to treat her schizophrenia,' Charlie said, wanting to change the subject. The more she thought about the lies her two friends had told her the more hollow she felt.

'So they're certain it's not Alzheimer's?' asked Neo.

'Seems that way.'

Another lie, Neo thought to himself. How many more were they going to uncover whilst trying to find Jane Bennett and her family?

'But she said something to you? Something that made you think the Bennetts are still at Felton?' Neo coaxed her. He wanted to give her time, but that was just an option he didn't have.

Charlie pushed the picture to the side and dragged her map towards them, laying her half finished mug on the corner to stop it rolling back up.

'Up until this point, I've been wondering how a family could even survive at Felton. It was the biggest hurdle, the one thing that seemed to point to them being moved to another area.'

'That maybe Harry Bennett had some friends waiting to help abduct his family,' Neo added.

'Exactly, only I hacked into the traffic cameras-'

'You what?' Neo shouted.

Charlie raised an eyebrow. 'Cyber Analyst remember.'

'Police officer, remember. I can't just condone... it's illegal to hack into those cameras, Charlie. Besides, we've already put in a request for the footage.'

'Any have you had them yet?' She watched Neo's stony expression as he remained silent. 'It'll take a week at most for that request to be processed, so I thought I'd take a peep. Now are you going to arrest me or can I show you what I found?' she challenged him with a smirk.

Neo thought about his options. It went against his instinct to do anything illegal. He'd spend over half his life stopping people from doing so, but he also needed to know.

'Go ahead,' he grudgingly said.

Charlie gazed at him with an unreadable expression before she started frantically typing on her computer. After a few seconds, she swiveled the screen around for Neo to watch.

'There's only a handful of logical routes they could have taken to get to the Phillips' house. One of those routes would have been along the A490, but unfortunately, the cameras are broken and have been for months. But I did manage to trace their car right where they left the A483.' She tapped the screen, bringing the still frame to life.

Neo leaned forward and watched the very empty road. He stilled as a silver Hyundai Kona came into shot and then disappeared off the slip road to the A490. That was only a ten minutes drive from Felton Pond.

'And you're sure it's them?'

Charlie paused the video and after tapping a few buttons, the image panned to a clear view of the car number plate.

'I'm positive. Not only that, they're the only car to take that turning before the rain starts at 2.47am.'

'What time is this?' Neo pointed to the screen.

'11.24pm.'

Neo relaxed in his chair. 'Still plenty of time for someone to take the family, using a different route,' he pointed out.

'That's what I thought,' Charlie agreed. 'But then Alice mentioned that she'd given Lucy and Jane their old camping equipment, everything but their tent because the girls said they didn't need it.'

'So if Jane had ever spoken about her childhood to her husband...'

'Then he would know the perfect place for them to laylow for a while with everything they'd need.' Charlie looked at the map. 'Somewhere there's shelter at Felton that Jane and Lucy must have used. Somewhere more remote than Felton Manor.' The excitement in her voice was palpable.

'I need to call Gwilt. We need to find ourselves a map of this area. If Harry Bennett has his family kidnapped somewhere on this land, we need to find him before he's able to move them,' Neo agreed.
