9. Dear Rider

At one am, as I was about to go to bed after a long day of killing off people that knew to much and actually doing my job of butcher, I got a call from a very excited Rider.

" Hey!"

I didn't even have time to ask 'how are you' or ' what's up?', she was already talking, almost squealing.

" Oh my... Oh my! Baby! Baby! JJ! I've been accepted! And it's a major publisher's! I'm gonna be published! I'm gonna have a book published at nineteen! Well... It's not my objective of eighteen, but... Close enough! Oh... Do you believe it? I don't believe it!"

She sounded mega-excited. Of course, I had visited that particular publisher for a little convincing, but she had written the book that deserved publishing.

" I'm super proud of you, babe!"

" I'm so proud of myself, JJ! I mean never in a billion years I actually thought I'd see my books on the shelves one day!"

" I knew you could do it. You just needed to believe in yourself a little."

She laughed on the other side of the line.

" I love you. I'm gonna go sleep now, I gotta see them again tomorrow to go over the graphics of the cover and everything."

" Love you too, babe."

She hung up. I knew she was on a high. I felt that too after... Well. Killing. She was going to produce her own book, and I knew she was really really proud of herself. But my bubble of happiness was pierced when I heard knocking at the door. I got up, groaning, hit my foot in a dresser and limped to the door. By the time I unlocked it, it swung open on a very annoyed Mandy.

" Two months. Two months without any news! Dude! I'm the one that got you the girl! Can't you be grateful? You're my best friend, JJ. I mean... Come on!"

" I'm sorry. I was busy."

" Right. You've been busy two months straight with your new girl. I know it's nice to feel loved, but can you please care about others than yourself for once?"

" Where did that come from?"

" My mother pulled a lawsuit on me. She finally did it. You weren't there for me. You never answered the phone, you never lifted a finger."

" Mandy I..."

" Call me Amanda. You don't get the Mandy privilege anymore."

" Why— What? You serious?"

"Dead serious. If you wanna get out of my life, it's in every aspect of it."

"Man- Amanda. I said I was sorry. I know I've gone awol, but please..."

" Nuh-uh. Next time we talk, I'm eating with you and your girlfriend. I wanna get to know the chick who stole my bestie."

" You're a really beautiful blonde."

" So?"

" She might think I'm cheating."

" It's not the case."

" I-"

"You're not getting out of this. How's tomorrow? At two?"

"It's— Uh. Great."

" Tootles!"
