Chapter One: Welcome to the crazy house
"No! No! Leave me alone!! LET ME GO!!" a fourteen-year old boy no taller than 5'5 dodged several men in suits. One man grabbed the collar of his shirt, which choked the boy. He slid down to the cold tile floor, gasping for air and attempted to pull his shirt off, but the men held him down and restrained him.
The boy had tears in his eyes, that he attempted to blink away. The men jerked him up and dragged him away. His family stood several feet away. His crying mother standing next to his emotionless father. Finally his older brother, his now only brother. His brother looked at him with eyes filled with fear, disgust, anger, and sorrow.
"P-Please...I don't want to go...please!!" A man with with long, blonde hair shook him slightly.
"You know you have to go. After what you did...to your younger brother." The man shook his head in disgust. "Disgusting." He threw the boy into the back of an ambulance and strapped him down on the gurney, then they sped off.
Hours and hours later the boy was submitted to a mental hospital until his court date came and his verdict set.
A doctor came in. She wore the usual doctor attire: a white coat with pens in the pocket, her name stitched onto the pocket, and comfortable shoes. The only difference was that she had a pair of handcuffs in case someone tried to attack her.
"They're useless you know." The boy said, sitting up on the bed. "Those handcuffs. If someone were to attack you, you wouldn't have the time to get them ready. Even if you did the patient might be stronger than you. There's many more possibilities."
The doctor shuffled through a few papers and ignored him. He rolled his eyes and swung his legs over the edge of his bed. Finally the doctor turned around and spoke.
"Nico Jeffery Jones. Age fourteen. Born December 6th, 1999. Correct?" Nico nodded. "Let's see here...blood type...hair and eye colour...height, weight, gender...aha! "Alright. I need to ask you a few questions for this. You need to answer honestly. Ready?" Nico nodded once more.
"Excellent. But before we start my name is Doctor Rose Smith. I will be your doctor here you will also have a therapist his name will be Doctor John Tyler." Nico nodded again.
"Now onto the questions. What is your sexuality?" Nico raised an eyebrow.
"Why exactly do you need to know?"
"Well, our pure male corridor is filled so you have to go to the co-ed corridor. Us knowing your sexuality will let us know who we should bunk you with. For example if your straight you'd share a room with males. If your gay we'd bunk you with females. We try to keep this place as PG as possible."
"Oh...I'm bisexual." Doctor Smith wrote on her papers.
"Okay. Are you depressed or have thoughts of suicide?"
"No."
"Anger issues. Or do you have a hard time controlling your anger?"
"Yes."
"Eating disorders? Anxiety? Schizophrenia? Dyslexia?"
"No. No. No. No." Doctor Smith's pencil scratched on the papers and clicked the top of her pencil.
"Done. Now I need to draw some blood, get a urine sample and do a full body check." She pulled out a needle and prepared Nico's left arm. She then poked him and extracted some blood then placed some cotton over the puncture wound. She transferred the blood to its own little pouch and handed Nico a small cup with his name on it.
Nico walked into a small bathroom connected to the previous room. He unzipped his black skinny jeans and tugged them down slighty along with his Pokémon boxers.
"This is stupid..." He lowered the cup and began peeing. 'I need to get out of here...' He thought. 'But I'll use my time. This won't be some sloppy escape.' He finished, cleaned himself then pulled up his pants and walked back. Nico set the cup down next to his doctor.
"Thank you. Now I need you to talk off all your clothes excluding your underwear."
"Why exactly is this necessary?" Nico said as he took off his grey sweatshirt and red t-shirt.
"We need to see and bruises or cuts. Basically an wounds on you. This is so we know if it is either some sort of abuse or self harm." He kicked off his shoes and pulled his pants down again. Doctor Smith searched his arms, hands, legs, stomach, thighs, neck, and chest. The only thing she found were some bruises on his knuckles.
Nico pulled his clothes back on and was about to pull his shows back on when a tall muscular man limped in.
"Oh hey Ron! Nico, this is Ron! He works here. He escorts all of you out to lunch and basically watches you! He also runs security and your sleep schedules." Ron smiled slightly and nodded.
"Right...I just came by to inform Nico of our rules." Doctor smith stood up and exchanged a few hushed words with Ron before leaving the two of them alone.
"So Nico. As you know I'm Ron and you already know my position here. There are a few nurses in the middle. They all are great people. They'll help you out as best as they can. We have someone who comes in half the time then switches over to the adult ward. Anyway, the schedule here is simple. You wake at 6:30. Then at 7:00- 8:00 is your breakfast. 9:30-10:30 is your education which mainly consists of worksheets. 10:30 to 11:00 is just a little break. You watch tv and can make calls. 11:00- 12:00 is your lunch in the hospital cafeteria. From 12:00 to 1:00 is quiet time. 1:00- 2:00 can either be arts and crafts or a gym day. 2:00 to 3:00 is group therapy. 3:00-3:30 is another break. 3:30- 4:30 is more group therapy. 4:30 to 6:00 is dinner. 6:00- 7:00 is visiting hour. 7:00- 9:00 or 9:30 is your free time. From then on you sleep and it repeats. The schedules may change if your therapist requests to see you or you have family therapy or any other event occurs. Any questions?"
"We get to call whoever we want?"
"Yes. Now onto the rules. There is no violence, put downs, harassment, electronics, shoelaces, hoodie strings, touching, running; unless you're in gym or out in the courts, yelling, threats, or unauthorized medication allowed. The strings rule may sound odd but there are people here who attempted suicide so this is for their and your safety. During quiet time you can not exit your room. You must be in bed by your assigned bedtime. Also there are vending machines here, you can use them if you have money during your lunch or you can ask a nurse to buy you something as long as you give her the exact amount of money needed."
After that, Nico pulled the shoelaces off his shoes and cut out the strings of his hoodie. It was currently 8:30 p.m. Ron showed him to his room where another boy was reading with his back turned to him.
The room itself was plain, boring, and flat out depressing. It was a big room with grey walls and two beds about five feet apart. A desk presses up against the centre wall with a dim light above it and two open cabinets on both sides. The beds looked more like mattresses with drawers underneath. There was two thin blue blankets that looked more like napkins. A big window was in the far corner of the room and it was covered by thick grey curtains. Next to the window was an open door leading into a small bathroom with a tiny sink, shower, and toilet.
"Oh, hello." The boy that was reading was now looking at him. Nico looked him over. He was about an inch taller than he and had bright green eyes which were outlined with grey circles underneath. He had thick and messy brown hair that reached the base of his neck.
"Hi" Nico said, walking over to the boy and extending his arm to shake the boy's hand. "My names Nico Jones."
"Mine's Samuel Elliot." Samuel shook Nico's hand, which was warm to Nico's surprise.
"Well Samuel...it looks like we're going to be sharing a room." Samuel smiled and nodded.
"You know Nico, you can call me Sammy if you want."
"Alright...Sammy." Nico sat on his bed. The mattress was extremely uncomfortable and the blanket was slightly itchy. "Quick question, how do things work around here? Ron gave me the basics but..."
Sammy sat on his own bed and looked over at Nico.
"Well...during breaks and such, like right now, you can do as you please. There's a TV in the lounge right down the hall. You can say anything you want as long as it complies with the rules. The grilled cheese here is pretty good and they don't have a limit on how much of it you can eat." Samuel smiled crookedly and Nico felt a smile tug at the corners of his mouth.
"Other than the rules they have here it's pretty okay here. I should know. I've been here longer than everyone else. But you don't wanna hear my tragic backstory. C'mon let's get you something to eat." Samuel stood up and held out his hand to help Nico up. Nico shook his head and stood up on his own.
The two of them walked down a cold hallway in their socks. Nico couldn't help but notice an emergency exit at the opposite end of the hallway and a door leading outside near a bathroom. He smiles deviously and thought up a simple escape plan. Of course he wouldn't do it today, it'd be too obvious if he attempted to reach freedom after the first day there.
"Here's the lounge. All we got at the moment is pudding cups and oranges." Samuel's statement snapped Nico out of his planning and he blankly looked into the room where several faces looked back at him.
