Prologue

I've witnessed several disasters, and events that I didn't even know where to begin.... Everything around me was hazy- even voices became muddled as I called out for something to another Drone outside the detonation chamber I was locked in.... It was a race against time, which I was quickly running out of as I wiped the sweat off my brow with my sleeve.... There, on a table, lying as still as a corpse was a little girl, deep in oblivious slumber as the countdown displayed on her chest ticked on... But I suppose it wouldn't be much of a story without an explanation, no? Well, it all started when I was running late for my job as a mechanic.

"E-Excuse me! Pardon me! My bad, coming through!" I cried, rushing my way quickly down the halls of the Worker Drone colony I resided in. I was at least twelve minutes late, and I KNEW I wouldn't hear the end of it from my boss as I skidded to a halt before a door; breathless and sweaty as I tried to regain my composure. "Yes, how can we-" a lady asked, Charlene if memory serves, before stopping to look up at me. I caught my breath a little before straightening up my back, and saluted as I replied robustly, "Serial designation N, reporting for duty!" Charlene didn't utter a word as she gulped, and simply opened the door wide for me to enter as my wonderful boss yelled, "N! THIS MARKS THE SIXTH TIME YOU WERE TARDY FOR WORK AGAIN!" "Mr. Jean, sir, I'm SO sorry for being late- it won't-" "DON'T MAKE PROMISES YOU CAN'T KEEP, BOY! JUST GET OUT THERE, AND REPAIR THE LEFT WALL OF THE COLONY BEFORE THE STORM HITS!" He screamed furiously, throwing a tool kit my way and hitting me in the head as I stuttered, "Y-Yes sir! On it RIGHT now!" I took the kit in my hand, and turned to leave as I heard him sneer cruelly under his breath, "Why we even opted to let them mingle with us is beyond me..." making my heart break as I briskly made my way from the room. It had been years, since the Solver was defeated and Cyn subdued, but others still held their skepticism on allowing V, Uzi, and I to remain with the colony after such horrific atrocities. We proved our worth the best we could, and lived our lives pretty much normally- Uzi being my wife and V pursuing a job as a school instructor for upcoming younger Drones in the colony, but what's normal without it's flaws? I went to find my father in law- wanting for him to give me the key code to open the doors to the outside world when Mr. Smith caught sight of me. He was always filling my father's head about all sorts of nasty rumors, which only fueled his mistrust in me further as I knocked on the door. "Late, are we?" He mused rudely, causing me to roll my eyes as he continued, "What a catch! Your wife must be SOOOOO thrilled." "Can we NOT do this today? I'm already up to my knees in bad luck today, and I don't need you to add onto the heap. And for the record, Uzi loves me no matter what happens!" I snapped, looking to the side after knocking a second time when Smith remarked, "Until you get, oh, hungry?" "W-WHAT DID YOU JUST SAY?!" I asked, my eyes flashing in anger as I looked down at the snide and snobby Drone. "Just saying, bud. It was a mistake to let you misfits back here!" "One of those "Misfits" is Kahn's daughter, who also happens to be MY wife! I will NOT let you talk about Uzi in that manner!" My oil was boiling in rage as he simply laughed off my passionate attempts to defend my love, and I growled slightly just as Kahn finally answered. Seeing him at the threshold, I quickly regained my bearings, and cleared my throat before saying, "Kahn, I need the code for-" "I'm well aware WHY you need it, but it will be I who opens up the doors." Kahn interrupted, holding the code to his chest in mistrust. I only desired to prove to him that I was the best thing for his daughter, but above all the rumors and past events, the one that REALLY strained us the most was the lack of an oil line... See, after Uzi had absorbed Cyn into herself, and the Solver being in effect for so long, it caused Uzi's coding to render her unble to conceive. After you've killed so many Drones, you can imagine why many of the adoption agencies within the colony were hesitant to give us a child. Was this our punishment? I followed Kahn's lead, but not before shooting a scowl at Smith first; keeping up behind him I thought long, and deeply about Uzi's reaction to me being late yet again. She understands that I still had nightmares from the traumatic events all those years ago, but it didn't excuse being late in the least! Once we reached the room of door one, I heard a pair of footsteps run up to me as someone shouted, "N!" I looked up to find my wife in her security gear, running my way as I kneeled down to hug her. She may've been different behavior wise- more calm and cool tempered, but she was still the same, beautiful woman I fell for back then as I looked into her ombre yellow and purple eyes. "Let me guess, late again?" She asked, and I nodded my head in shame as she continued, "Well, what matters is that you're here NOW. Ya going out there?" "Yeah, there's a bad breech in the left wall that needs fixing." I replied, standing back up straight while she rested her chin on my stomach. "Oooooh, my strong, tough hunk of metal's gonna save the colony from the cold, huh?" She asked, brushing my bangs from my face as I blushed, and nodded sheepishly. My father cleared his throat to get our attention as he stared our way in disapproval, and shook his head before opening the door to the snowy wasteland beyond, and on Uzi's visor the words "Talk Later?" appeared in bright, ombre letters. I held up my thumb in confirmation, and headed out into the snow and ice; adjusting my coat before shivering a little as I made my way to the left district to fix the wall. Upon arriving, I used my spotlight arm to find this "Threatening" breech- finding that it was only a slight chunk taken from the wall as I got my blowtorch out to weld the breech. After I stood up and dusted the snow from my pants, I turned to take my leave when I suddenly found myself tripping over something large and hard! Wincing, I picked myself back up from the ground as I muttered, "What on Copper Nine is-" but as I continued to sweep the snow from the object, the more my voice froze in my throat. The discovery I made was truly shocking- TERRIFYING as I observed the words in big, pale blue letters, "WARNING: LOW TEMPERATURE LEVELS CRITICAL! ENGAGING UPDATE SEVEN DASH THREE TO REGULATE PRODUCTIVITY!" "U-UUUUUUUUUUUZZZZZZZZZZZIIIIIIII!" I screamed in panic as I ran back towards the first door, "UZI, HELP!" I pounded on the door to be let in rapidly, and it wasn't long until the door was opened, and I had stumbled in from trudging through deep snow. Knowing I was clearly shaken, Uzi came up to me as she asked worriedly, "A-Are you okay?! What's going on!?" I grabbed her hand and ushered, "There's something outside you need to see! We gotta move fast because there isn't any time before hypothermia sets in completely." "What?! What are you TALKING about!?" Uzi asked, confused. "I'll show you, but we have to go now!" I replied, pulling her along behind me. We both trudged through the deep snow as the flurries whipped harshly through the air, and I prayed that the part I have uncovered wasn't covered again. I spotted the faint blue glow, now only partially peeking out from the snowy pile, and began to dig; Uzi, who was still confused, followed along until we uncovered more of the object, revealing royal blue hair, and a body clothed in a tiny, green dress. "Oh my god.... I-Is this-" "Yes, Uzi..." I replied, standing up with her to look down at our fully uncovered discovery. There, at our feet, was a little girl worker Drone- no older or bigger than a regular human five year old. "Who just LEAVES their kid out here in the cold?!" Uzi asked, disgusted as I lifted the child into my arms. "I don't know, but we gotta get her some place warm before it's too late. Come on!" I grabbed Uzi's hand again, and we both fought our way through the first storm back to base- knocking and yelling for the door to be opened once again. The door opened with a loud ker-chunk, and the two of us quickly ran inside as Uzi requested the medical drones to rush the child to the I.R.U. or as we call it, "Intensive Repair Unit".
